Abstract:Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) bring various benefits to the current and upcoming wireless networks, including enhanced spectrum and energy efficiency, soft handover, transmission reliability, and even localization accuracy. These remarkable improvements result from the reconfigurability, programmability, and adaptation capabilities of RISs for fine-tuning radio propagation environments, which can be realized in a cost- and energy-efficient manner. In this paper, we focus on the upgrade of the existing fifth-generation (5G) cellular network with the introduction of an RIS owning a full-dimensional uniform planar array structure for unleashing advanced three-dimensional connectivity. The deployed RIS is exploited for serving unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) flying in the sky with ultra-high data rate, a challenging task to be achieved with conventional base stations (BSs) that are designed mainly to serve ground users. By taking into account the line-of-sight probability for the RIS-UAV and BS-UAV links, we formulate the average achievable rate, analyze the effect of environmental parameters, and make insightful performance comparisons. Simulation results show that the deployment of RISs can bring impressive gains and significantly outperform conventional RIS-free 5G networks.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to improve the three - dimensional (3D) connection performance by introducing reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) on the basis of the existing fifth - generation (5G) cellular network, especially in order to serve unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in flight. Current 5G base stations are mainly designed for two - dimensional (2D) coverage of ground users, and providing extensive 3D coverage is a hot topic for future wireless networks (such as beyond 5G and sixth - generation 6G networks). By using the full - dimensional uniform planar array structure of RIS, the paper explores how to achieve advanced 3D connections, especially serving UAVs in the air at high data rates, which is a difficult task for traditional base stations to achieve. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following points: 1. **Enhancing 3D Connections**: By deploying RIS near existing 5G base stations, efficient 3D connections to aerial UAVs are achieved. 2. **Line - of - Sight Probability Analysis**: Consider the line - of - sight (LoS) probability between RIS and UAVs, as well as the LoS probability between base stations and UAVs, and analyze the impact of these factors on the average achievable rate. 3. **Performance Comparison**: Through simulation results, compare the performance differences between RIS - assisted B5G networks and traditional RIS - free 5G networks in different propagation environments, and show the significant gains brought by RIS. The main contribution of the paper lies in proposing a cost - effective method to expand the 3D coverage ability of 5G networks through RIS deployment, thereby meeting the high quality - of - service (QoS) requirements of UAV communications.
