Abstract:Finding general conditions which ensure that a graph is Hamiltonian is a central topic in graph theory. An old and well known conjecture in the area states that any $d$-regular $n$-vertex graph $G$ whose second largest eigenvalue in absolute value $\lambda(G)$ is at most $\frac{d}{C}$, for some universal constant $C>0$, has a Hamilton cycle. In this paper, we obtain two main results which make substantial progress towards this problem. Firstly, we settle this conjecture in full when the degree $d$ is at least a small power of $n$. Secondly, in the general case we show that $\lambda(G) \leq \frac{d}{C(\log n)^{1/3}}$ implies the existence of a Hamilton cycle, improving the 20-year old bound of $\frac{d}{ \log^{1-o(1)} n}$ of Krivelevich and Sudakov. We use in a novel way a variety of methods, such as a robust Pósa rotation-extension technique, the Friedman-Pippenger tree embedding with rollbacks and the absorbing method, combined with additional tools and ideas. Our results have several interesting applications, giving best bounds on the number of generators which guarantee the Hamiltonicity of random Cayley graphs, which is an important partial case of the well known Hamiltonicity conjecture of Lovász. They can also be used to improve a result of Alon and Bourgain on additive patterns in multiplicative subgroups.

Abstract:A Hamilton cycle in a digraph is a cycle that passes through all the vertices, where all the arcs are oriented in the same direction. The problem of finding Hamilton cycles in directed graphs is well studied and is known to be hard. One of the main reasons for this, is that there is no general tool for finding Hamilton cycles in directed graphs comparable to the so called Pos?a `rotation-extension' technique for the undirected analogue. Let ${\mathcal D}(n,p)$ denote the random digraph on vertex set $[n]$, obtained by adding each directed edge independently with probability $p$. Here, we present a general and a very simple method, using known results, to attack problems of packing and counting Hamilton cycles in random directed graphs, for every edge-probability $p>\log^C(n)/n$. Our results are asymptotically optimal with respect to all parameters and apply equally well to the undirected case.

Building Hamiltonian Cycles in the Semi-Random Graph Process in Less Than $2n$ Rounds

Abstract:The semi-random graph process is an adaptive random graph process in which an online algorithm is initially presented an empty graph on $n$ vertices. In each round, a vertex $u$ is presented to the algorithm independently and uniformly at random. The algorithm then adaptively selects a vertex $v$, and adds the edge $uv$ to the graph. For a given graph property, the objective of the algorithm is to force the graph to satisfy this property asymptotically almost surely in as few rounds as possible. We focus on the property of Hamiltonicity. We present an adaptive strategy which creates a Hamiltonian cycle in $\alpha n$ rounds, where $\alpha < 1.81696$ is derived from the solution to a system of differential equations. We also show that achieving Hamiltonicity requires at least $\beta n$ rounds, where $\beta > 1.26575$.

Dirac-type Problem of Rainbow matchings and Hamilton cycles in Random Graphs

Abstract:Given a family of graphs $G_1,\dots,G_{n}$ on the same vertex set $[n]$, a rainbow Hamilton cycle is a Hamilton cycle on $[n]$ such that each $G_c$ contributes exactly one edge. We prove that if $G_1,\dots,G_{n}$ are independent samples of $G(n,p)$ on the same vertex set $[n]$, then for each $\varepsilon>0$, whp, every collection of spanning subgraphs $H_c\subseteq G_c$, with $\delta(H_c)\geq(\frac{1}{2}+\varepsilon)np$, admits a rainbow Hamilton cycle. A similar result is proved for rainbow perfect matchings in a family of $n/2$ graphs on the same vertex set $[n]$.

Spanning cycles in random directed graphs

Abstract:We show that, in almost every $n$-vertex random directed graph process, a copy of every possible $n$-vertex oriented cycle will appear strictly before a directed Hamilton cycle does, except of course for the directed cycle itself. Furthermore, given an arbitrary $n$-vertex oriented cycle, we determine the sharp threshold for its appearance in the binomial random directed graph. These results confirm, in a strong form, a conjecture of Ferber and Long.

Abstract:We study the statistics of Hamiltonian cycles on various families of bicolored random planar maps (with the spherical topology). These families fall into two groups corresponding to two distinct universality classes with respective central charges $c=-1$ and $c=-2$. The first group includes generic $p$-regular maps with vertices of fixed valency $p\geq 3$, whereas the second group comprises maps with vertices of mixed valencies, and the so-called rigid case of $2q$-regular maps ($q\geq 2$) for which, at each vertex, the unvisited edges are equally distributed on both sides of the cycle. We predict for each class its universal configuration exponent $\gamma$, as well as a new universal critical exponent $\nu$ characterizing the number of long-distance contacts along the Hamiltonian cycle. These exponents are theoretically obtained by using the Knizhnik, Polyakov and Zamolodchikov (KPZ) relations, with the appropriate values of the central charge, applied, in the case of $\nu$, to the corresponding critical exponent on regular (hexagonal or square) lattices. These predictions are numerically confirmed by analyzing exact enumeration results for $p$-regular maps with $p=3,4,\ldots,7$, and for maps with mixed valencies $(2,3)$, $(2,4)$ and $(3,4)$.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a random geometric graph (RGG) G on n nodes with adjacency distance rn just below the Hamiltonicity threshold and construct Hamiltonian cycles using additional edges called bridges. The bridges by definition do not belong to G and we are interested in estimating the number of bridges and the maximum bridge length, needed for constructing a Hamiltonian cycle. In our main result, we show that with high probability, i.e. with probability converging to one as n →∞, we can obtain a Hamiltonian cycle with maximum bridge length a constant multiple of rn and containing an arbitrarily small fraction of edges as bridges. We use a combination of backbone construction and iterative cycle merging to obtain the desired Hamiltonian cycle.

Covering Random Digraphs with Hamilton Cycles

Abstract:A covering of a digraph $D$ by Hamilton cycles is a collection of directed Hamilton cycles (not necessarily edge-disjoint) that together cover all the edges of $D$. We prove that for $1/2 \geq p\geq \frac{\log^{20} n}{n}$, the random digraph $D_{n,p}$ typically admits an optimal Hamilton cycle covering. Specifically, the edges of $D_{n,p}$ can be covered by a family of $t$ Hamilton cycles, where $t$ is the maximum of the the in-degree and out-degree of the vertices in $D_{n,p}$. Notably, $t$ is the best possible bound, and our assumption on $p$ is optimal up to a polylogarithmic factor.

Abstract:We show that if $n$ is odd and $p \ge C \log n / n$, then with high probability Hamilton cycles in $G(n,p)$ span its cycle space. More generally, we show this holds for a class of graphs satisfying certain natural pseudorandom properties. The proof is based on a novel idea of parity-switchers, which can be thought of as analogues of absorbers in the context of cycle spaces. As another application of our method, we show that Hamilton cycles in a near-Dirac graph $G$, that is, a graph $G$ with odd $n$ vertices and minimum degree $n/2 + C$ for sufficiently large constant $C$, span its cycle space.

Abstract:Let $X_1,X_2,\ldots,X_n$ be chosen independently and uniformly at random from the unit $d$-dimensional cube $[0,1]^d$. Let $r$ be given and let $\cal X=\{X_1,X_2,\ldots,X_n\}$. Abstract:Let $\mu(G)$ denote the minimum number of edges whose addition to $G$ results in a Hamiltonian graph, and let $\hat{\mu}(G)$ denote the minimum number of edges whose addition to $G$ results in a pancyclic graph. We study the distributions of $\mu (G),\hat{\mu}(G)$ in the context of binomial random graphs. Letting $d=d(n)$:=$n\cdot p$, we prove that there exists a function $f:\mathbb{R}^+\to [0,1]$ of order $f(d) = \frac{1}{2}de^{-d}+e^{-d}+O(d^6e^{-3d})$ such that, if $G\sim G(n,p)$ with $20 \le d(n) \le 0.4 \log n$, then with high probability $\mu (G)= (1+o(1))\cdot f(d)\cdot n$. Let $n_i(G)$ denote the number of degree $i$ vertices in $G$. A trivial lower bound on $\mu(G)$ is given by the expression $n_0(G) + \lceil \frac{1}{2}n_1(G) \rceil$. We show that in the random graph process $\{ G_t\}_{t=0}^{\binom{n}{2}}$ with high probability there exist times $t_1,t_2$, both of order $(1+o(1))n\cdot \left( \frac{1}{6}\log n + \log \log n \right)$, such that $\mu(G_t)=n_0(G_t) + \lceil \frac{1}{2}n_1(G_t) \rceil$ for every $t\ge t_1$ and $\mu(G_t)>n_0(G_t) + \lceil \frac{1}{2}n_1(G_t) \rceil$ for every $t\le t_2$. The time $t_i$ can be characterized as the smallest $t$ for which $G_t$ contains less than $i$ copies of a certain problematic subgraph. In particular, this implies that the hitting time for the existence of a Hamilton path is equal to the hitting time of $n_1(G) \le 2$ with high probability. For the binomial random graph, this implies that if $np-\frac{1}{3}\log n - 2\log \log n \to \infty$ and $G\sim G(n,p)$ then, with high probability, $\mu (G) = n_0(G) + \lceil \frac{1}{2}n_1(G) \rceil$. On oriented cycles in randomly perturbed digraphs

Abstract:In 2003, Bohman, Frieze, and Martin initiated the study of randomly perturbed graphs and digraphs. For digraphs, they showed that for every $\alpha>0$, there exists a constant $C$ such that for every $n$-vertex digraph of minimum semi-degree at least $\alpha n$, if one adds $Cn$ random edges then asymptotically almost surely the resulting digraph contains a consistently oriented Hamilton cycle. We generalize their result, showing that the hypothesis of this theorem actually asymptotically almost surely ensures the existence of every orientation of a cycle of every possible length, simultaneously. Moreover, we prove that we can relax the minimum semi-degree condition to a minimum total degree condition when considering orientations of a cycle that do not contain a large number of vertices of indegree $1$. Our proofs make use of a variant of an absorbing method of Montgomery.

Abstract:We show that every $(n,d,\lambda)$-graph contains a Hamilton cycle for sufficiently large $n$, assuming that $d\geq \log^{10}n$ and $\lambda\leq cd$, where $c=\frac{1}{9000}$. This significantly improves a recent result of Glock, Correia and Sudakov, who obtain a similar result for $d$ that grows polynomially with $n$. The proof is based on the absorption technique combined with a new result regarding the second largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a subgraph induced by a random subset of vertices. We believe that the latter result is of an independent interest and will have further applications.

Abstract:An $n$-vertex graph is Hamiltonian if it contains a cycle that covers all of its vertices, and it is pancyclic if it contains cycles of all lengths from $3$ up to $n$. In 1972, Erdős conjectured that every Hamiltonian graph with independence number at most $k$ and at least $n = \Omega(k^2)$ vertices is pancyclic. In this paper we prove this old conjecture in a strong form by showing that if such a graph has $n = (2+o(1))k^2$ vertices, it is already pancyclic, and this bound is asymptotically best possible.
