Abstract:Resolving a conjecture of Kühn and Osthus from 2012, we show that $p= 1/\sqrt{n}$ is the threshold for the random graph $G_{n,p}$ to contain the square of a Hamilton cycle.

Abstract:We investigate the appearance of the square of a Hamilton cycle in the model of randomly perturbed graphs, which is, for a given α∈(0,1) , the union of any n ‐vertex graph with minimum degree αn and the binomial random graph G(n,p) . This is known when α>1/2 and we determine the exact perturbed threshold probability in all the remaining cases, that is, for each α≤1/2 . We demonstrate that, as α ranges over the interval (0,1) , the threshold performs a countably infinite number of 'jumps'. Our result has implications on the perturbed threshold for two‐universality, where we also fully address all open cases.

Abstract:Finding general conditions which ensure that a graph is Hamiltonian is a central topic in graph theory. An old and well known conjecture in the area states that any $d$-regular $n$-vertex graph $G$ whose second largest eigenvalue in absolute value $\lambda(G)$ is at most $\frac{d}{C}$, for some universal constant $C>0$, has a Hamilton cycle. In this paper, we obtain two main results which make substantial progress towards this problem. Firstly, we settle this conjecture in full when the degree $d$ is at least a small power of $n$. Secondly, in the general case we show that $\lambda(G) \leq \frac{d}{C(\log n)^{1/3}}$ implies the existence of a Hamilton cycle, improving the 20-year old bound of $\frac{d}{ \log^{1-o(1)} n}$ of Krivelevich and Sudakov. We use in a novel way a variety of methods, such as a robust Pósa rotation-extension technique, the Friedman-Pippenger tree embedding with rollbacks and the absorbing method, combined with additional tools and ideas. Our results have several interesting applications, giving best bounds on the number of generators which guarantee the Hamiltonicity of random Cayley graphs, which is an important partial case of the well known Hamiltonicity conjecture of Lovász. They can also be used to improve a result of Alon and Bourgain on additive patterns in multiplicative subgroups.

Abstract:Graph Theory A classic theorem of Dirac from 1952 states that every graph with minimum degree at least n=2 contains a Hamiltonian cycle. In 1963, P ́osa conjectured that every graph with minimum degree at least 2n=3 contains the square of a Hamiltonian cycle. In 1960, Ore relaxed the degree condition in the Dirac’s theorem by proving that every graph with deg(u) + deg(v) ≥ n for every uv =2 E(G) contains a Hamiltonian cycle. Recently, Chˆau proved an Ore-type version of P ́osa’s conjecture for graphs on n ≥ n0 vertices using the regularity–blow-up method; consequently the n0 is very large (involving a tower function). Here we present another proof that avoids the use of the regularity lemma. Aside from the fact that our proof holds for much smaller n0, we believe that our method of proof will be of independent interest.

Abstract:Let D be a digraph and C be a cycle in D. For any two vertices x and y in D, the distance from x to y is the minimum length of a path from x to y. We denote the square of Let $D$ be a digraph and $C$ be a cycle in $D$. For any two vertices $x$ and $y$ in $D$, the distance from $x$ to $y$ is the minimum length of a path from $x$ to $y$. We denote the square of the cycle $C$ to be the graph whose vertex set is $V(C)$ and for distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ in $C$, there is an arc from $x$ to $y$ if and only if the distance from $x$ to $y$ in $C$ is at most $2$. The reverse square of the cycle $C$ is the digraph with the same vertex set as $C$, and the arc set $A(C)\cup \{yx: \mbox{the vertices}\ x, y\in V(C)\ \mbox{and the distance from $x$ to $y$ on $C$ is $2$}\}$. In this paper, we show that for any real number $\gamma>0$ there exists a constant $n_0=n_0(\gamma)$, such that every digraph on $n\geq n_0$ vertices with the minimum in- and out-degree at least $(2/3+\gamma)n$ contains the reverse square of a Hamiltonian cycle. Our result extends a result of Czygrinow, Kierstead and Molla.

Abstract:We present a tight extremal threshold for the existence of Hamilton cycles in graphs with large minimum degree and without a large ``bipartite hole`` (two disjoint sets of vertices with no edges between them). This result extends Dirac's classical theorem, and is related to a theorem of Chvátal and Erdős. In detail, an $(s, t)$-bipartite-hole in a graph $G$ consists of two disjoint sets of vertices $S$ and $T$ with $|S|= s$ and $|T|=t$ such that there are no edges between $S$ and $T$; and $\widetilde{\alpha}(G)$ is the maximum integer $r$ such that $G$ contains an $(s, t)$-bipartite-hole for every pair of non-negative integers $s$ and $t$ with $s + t = r$. Our central theorem is that a graph $G$ with at least $3$ vertices is Hamiltonian if its minimum degree is at least $\widetilde{\alpha}(G)$. From the proof we obtain a polynomial time algorithm that either finds a Hamilton cycle or a large bipartite hole. The theorem also yields a condition for the existence of $k$ edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles. We see that for dense random graphs $G(n,p)$, the probability of failing to contain many edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles is $(1 - p)^{(1 + o(1))n}$. Finally, we discuss the complexity of calculating and approximating $\widetilde{\alpha}(G)$.

Pancyclicity of Hamiltonian graphs

Abstract:An $n$-vertex graph is Hamiltonian if it contains a cycle that covers all of its vertices, and it is pancyclic if it contains cycles of all lengths from $3$ up to $n$. In 1972, Erdős conjectured that every Hamiltonian graph with independence number at most $k$ and at least $n = \Omega(k^2)$ vertices is pancyclic. In this paper we prove this old conjecture in a strong form by showing that if such a graph has $n = (2+o(1))k^2$ vertices, it is already pancyclic, and this bound is asymptotically best possible.

Abstract:We establish the threshold function for the property that the line graph of a random $r$-uniform hypergraph has a Hamilton cycle. The main result gives also the threshold function for Hamiltonicity of uniform random intersection graphs with a bounded number of attributes assigned to each vertex. The problem is closely related to Berge Hamilton cycles in random $r$-uniform hypergraphs.

Abstract:A Hamilton cycle in a digraph is a cycle that passes through all the vertices, where all the arcs are oriented in the same direction. The problem of finding Hamilton cycles in directed graphs is well studied and is known to be hard. One of the main reasons for this, is that there is no general tool for finding Hamilton cycles in directed graphs comparable to the so called Pos?a `rotation-extension' technique for the undirected analogue. Let ${\mathcal D}(n,p)$ denote the random digraph on vertex set $[n]$, obtained by adding each directed edge independently with probability $p$. Here, we present a general and a very simple method, using known results, to attack problems of packing and counting Hamilton cycles in random directed graphs, for every edge-probability $p>\log^C(n)/n$. Our results are asymptotically optimal with respect to all parameters and apply equally well to the undirected case.

Abstract:A graph $G=(V,E)$ is said to be a \textit{$k$-threshold graph} with \textit{thresholds} $\theta_1<\theta_2<...<\theta_k$ if there is a map $r: V \longrightarrow \mathbb{R}$ such that $uv\in E$ if and only if $\theta_i\le r(u)+r(v)$ holds for an odd number of $i\in [k]$. The \textit{threshold number} of $G$, denoted by $\Theta(G)$, is the smallest positive integer $k$ such that $G$ is a $k$-threshold graph. In this paper, we determine the exact threshold numbers of cycles by proving \[ \Theta(C_n)=\begin{cases} 1 & if\ n=3, 2 & if\ n=4, 4 & if\ n\ge 5, \end{cases} \] where $C_n$ is the cycle with $n$ vertices.

Hamiltonicity of Sparse Pseudorandom Graphs

Abstract:We show that every $(n,d,\lambda)$-graph contains a Hamilton cycle for sufficiently large $n$, assuming that $d\geq \log^{10}n$ and $\lambda\leq cd$, where $c=\frac{1}{9000}$. This significantly improves a recent result of Glock, Correia and Sudakov, who obtain a similar result for $d$ that grows polynomially with $n$. The proof is based on the absorption technique combined with a new result regarding the second largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a subgraph induced by a random subset of vertices. We believe that the latter result is of an independent interest and will have further applications.

Abstract:It is known that the complete graph $K_n$ contains a pancyclic subgraph with $n+(1+o(1))\cdot \log _2 n$ edges, and that there is no pancyclic graph on $n$ vertices with fewer than $n+\log _2 (n-1) -1$ edges. We show that, with high probability, $G(n,p)$ contains a pancyclic subgraph with $n+(1+o(1))\log_2 n$ edges for $p \ge p^*$, where $p^*=(1+o(1))\ln n/n$, right above the threshold for pancyclicity.

Abstract:We consider the random right-angled Coxeter group whose presentation graph is an Erdos-Renyi random graph on n vertices with edge probability p=p(n). We establish that p=1/\sqrt{n} is a threshold for relative hyperbolicity of the random right-angled Coxeter group . As a key step in the proof, we determine the minimal number of pairs of generators that must commute in a right-angled Coxeter group which is not relatively hyperbolic, a result which is of independent interest.

Covering Random Digraphs with Hamilton Cycles

Abstract:A covering of a digraph $D$ by Hamilton cycles is a collection of directed Hamilton cycles (not necessarily edge-disjoint) that together cover all the edges of $D$. We prove that for $1/2 \geq p\geq \frac{\log^{20} n}{n}$, the random digraph $D_{n,p}$ typically admits an optimal Hamilton cycle covering. Specifically, the edges of $D_{n,p}$ can be covered by a family of $t$ Hamilton cycles, where $t$ is the maximum of the the in-degree and out-degree of the vertices in $D_{n,p}$. Notably, $t$ is the best possible bound, and our assumption on $p$ is optimal up to a polylogarithmic factor.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the following problem: Given a Hamiltonian graph G , and a Hamiltonian cycle C of G , can we compute a second Hamiltonian cycle of G , and if yes, how quickly? If the input graph G satisfies certain conditions (e.g. if every vertex of G is odd, or if the minimum degree is large enough), it is known that such a second Hamiltonian cycle always exists. Despite substantial efforts, no subexponential-time algorithm is known for this problem. In this paper we relax the problem of computing a second Hamiltonian cycle in two ways. First, we consider approximating the length of a second longest cycle on n -vertex graphs with minimum degree and maximum degree . We provide a linear-time algorithm for computing a cycle of length at least , where . This results provides a constructive proof of a recent result by Girão, Kittipassorn, and Narayanan in the regime of . Our second relaxation of the problem is probabilistic. We propose a randomized algorithm which computes a second Hamiltonian cycle with high probability , given that the input graph G has a large enough minimum degree. More specifically, we prove that for every $0<p\le 0.02$ , if the minimum degree of G is at least , then a second Hamiltonian cycle can be computed with probability at least in time. This result implies that, when the minimum degree is sufficiently large, we can compute with high probability a second Hamiltonian cycle faster than any known deterministic algorithm. In particular, when , our probabilistic algorithm works in time.

The maximum number of odd cycles in a planar graph

Abstract:How many copies of a fixed odd cycle, $C_{2m+1}$, can a planar graph contain? We answer this question asymptotically for $m\in\{2,3,4\}$ and prove a bound which is tight up to a factor of $3/2$ for all other values of $m$. This extends the prior results of Cox--Martin and Lv et al. on the analogous question for even cycles. Our bounds result from a reduction to the following maximum likelihood question: which probability mass $\mu$ on the edges of some clique maximizes the probability that $m$ edges sampled independently from $\mu$ form either a cycle or a path?

Abstract:Let $\mu(G)$ denote the minimum number of edges whose addition to $G$ results in a Hamiltonian graph, and let $\hat{\mu}(G)$ denote the minimum number of edges whose addition to $G$ results in a pancyclic graph. We study the distributions of $\mu (G),\hat{\mu}(G)$ in the context of binomial random graphs. Letting $d=d(n)$:=$n\cdot p$, we prove that there exists a function $f:\mathbb{R}^+\to [0,1]$ of order $f(d) = \frac{1}{2}de^{-d}+e^{-d}+O(d^6e^{-3d})$ such that, if $G\sim G(n,p)$ with $20 \le d(n) \le 0.4 \log n$, then with high probability $\mu (G)= (1+o(1))\cdot f(d)\cdot n$. Let $n_i(G)$ denote the number of degree $i$ vertices in $G$. A trivial lower bound on $\mu(G)$ is given by the expression $n_0(G) + \lceil \frac{1}{2}n_1(G) \rceil$. Abstract:We prove that if Cay(G;S) is a connected Cayley graph with n vertices, and the prime factorization of n is very small, then Cay(G;S) has a hamiltonian cycle. More precisely, if p, q, and r are distinct primes, then n can be of the form kp with k < 32 and k not equal to 24, or of the form kpq with k < 6, or of the form pqr, or of the form kp^2 with k < 5, or of the form kp^3 with k < 3.

The Hamilton space of pseudorandom graphs

Abstract:We show that if $n$ is odd and $p \ge C \log n / n$, then with high probability Hamilton cycles in $G(n,p)$ span its cycle space. More generally, we show this holds for a class of graphs satisfying certain natural pseudorandom properties. The proof is based on a novel idea of parity-switchers, which can be thought of as analogues of absorbers in the context of cycle spaces. As another application of our method, we show that Hamilton cycles in a near-Dirac graph $G$, that is, a graph $G$ with odd $n$ vertices and minimum degree $n/2 + C$ for sufficiently large constant $C$, span its cycle space.
