Abstract:We describe the Chow homology and cohomology of toric variety bundles, with no restrictions on the singularities of the fibre. We present the ordinary and equivariant homologies as modules over the cohomology of the base, identify the ordinary cohomology with homology-valued Minkowski weights, and identify the equivariant cohomology with cohomology-weighted piecewise polynomial functions. We describe the product structure on Minkowski weights via a fan displacement rule, and the non-equivariant limit via equivariant multiplicities. Along the way we establish relative analogues of the Künneth property and Kronecker duality. Applications include the balancing condition in logarithmic enumerative geometry.

Abstract:We give a combinatorial classification of torus equivariant vector bundles on a (normal) projective T-variety of complexity-one. This extends the classification of equivariant line bundles on complexity-one T-varieties by Petersen-Süss on one hand, and Klyachko's classification of equivariant vector bundles on toric varieties on the other hand. A main ingredient in our classification is the classification of torus equivariant vector bundles on toric schemes over a DVR in terms of piecewise affine maps to the (extended) Bruhat-Tits building of the general linear group.

Isotropic and numerical equivalence for Chow groups and Morava K-theories

Abstract:In this paper we prove the conjecture claiming that, over a flexible field, isotropic Chow groups coincide with numerical Chow groups (with ${\Bbb{F}}_p$-coefficients). This shows that Isotropic Chow motives coincide with Numerical Chow motives. In particular, homs between such objects are finite groups and $\otimes$ has no zero-divisors. It provides a large supply of new points for the Balmer spectrum of the Voevodsky motivic category. We also prove the Morava K-theory version of the above result, which permits to construct plenty of new points for the Balmer spectrum of the Morel-Voevodsky ${\Bbb{A}}^1$-stable homotopic category. This substantially improves our understanding of the mentioned spectra whose description is a major open problem.

Abstract:We show that the chow group of $p$-cycles with rational coefficients are isomorphic to the corresponding rational homology groups for smooth complex projective varieties carrying a holomorphic vector field with an isolated zero locus. As applications, we obtain Chow groups and Lawson homology groups with rational coefficients and verify the Friedlander-Mazur conjecture and the Generalized Hodge conjecture for those varieties.
Varieties over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ with infinite Chow groups modulo almost all primes

Abstract:Let $E$ be the Fermat cubic curve over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$. In 2002, Schoen proved that the group $CH^2(E^3)/\ell$ is infinite for all primes $\ell\equiv 1\pmod 3$. We show that $CH^2(E^3)/\ell$ is infinite for all prime numbers $\ell> 5$. This gives the first example of a smooth projective variety $X$ over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ such that $CH^2(X)/\ell$ is infinite for all but at most finitely many primes $\ell$. A key tool is a recent theorem of Farb--Kisin--Wolfson, whose proof uses the prismatic cohomology of Bhatt--Scholze.

Abstract:We give a combinatorial characterization of Fulton's operational Chow cohomology groups of a complete , $\Q$-factorial, rational T-variety of complexity one in terms of so called generalized Minkowsky weights in the contraction-free case. We also describe the intersection product with Cartier invariant divisors in terms of the combinatorial data. In particular this provides a new way of computing top intersection numbers of invariant Cartier divisors combinatorially.

Abstract:We answer two questions of Carrell on a singular complex projective variety admitting the multiplicative group action, one positively and the other negatively. The results are applied to Chow varieties and we obtain Chow groups of 0-cycles and Lawson homology groups of 1-cycles for Chow varieties. A brief survey on the structure of Chow varieties is included for comparison and completeness. Moreover, we give counterexamples to Shafarevich's problem on the rationality of the irreducible components of Chow varieties.

Abstract:The Chow groups of codimension-p algebraic cycles modulo rational equivalence on a smooth algebraic variety X have steadfastly resisted the efforts of algebraic geometers to fathom their structure. This book explores a "linearization" approach to this problem, focusing on the infinitesimal structure of the Chow groups near their identity elements. This method was adumbrated in recent work of Mark Green and Phillip Griffiths. Similar topics have been explored by Bloch, Stienstra, Hesselholt, Van der Kallen, and others. A famous formula of Bloch expresses the Chow groups as Zariski sheaf cohomology groups of algebraic K-theory sheaves on X. "Linearization" of the Chow groups is thereby related to "linearization" of algebraic K-theory, which may be described in terms of negative cyclic homology. The "proper formal construction" arising from this approach is a "machine" involving the coniveau spectral sequences arising from four different generalized cohomology theories on X, with the last two sequences connected by the algebraic Chern character. Due to the critical role of the coniveau filtration, I refer to this construction as the coniveau machine. The main theorem in this book establishes the existence of the coniveau machine for algebraic K-theory on a smooth algebraic variety. An immediate corollary is a new formula expressing generalized tangent groups of Chow groups in terms of negative cyclic homology.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective quadric defined over a field of characteristic 2. We prove that in the Chow group of codimension 2 or 3 of $X$ the torsion subgroup has at most two elements. In codimension 2, we determine precisely when this torsion subgroup is nontrivial. In codimension 3, we show that there is no torsion if $\dim X\ge 11$. This extends the analogous results in characteristic different from 2, obtained by Karpenko in the nineteen-nineties.

Abstract:We define the Chow t-structure on the infinity-category of motivic spectra SH(k) over an arbitrary base field k. We identify the heart of this t-structure SH(k)(c(sic)) when the exponential characteristic of k is inverted. Restricting to the cellular subcategory, we identify the Chow heart SH(k)(cell,c(sic)) as the category of even graded MU2*MU-comodules. Furthermore, we show that the co-category of modules over the Chow truncated sphere spectrum 1(c=0) is algebraic. Our results generalize the ones in Gheorghe-Wang-Xu in three aspects: to integral results; to all base fields other than just C; to the entire infinity-category of motivic spectra SH(k), rather than a subcategory containing only certain cellular objects. We also discuss a strategy for computing motivic stable homotopy groups of (p-completed) spheres over an arbitrary base field k using the Postnikov- Whitehead tower associated to the Chow t-structure and the motivic Adams spectral sequences over k.

Abstract:In this paper, we ask: for which $(g, n)$ is the rational Chow or cohomology ring of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ generated by tautological classes? This question has been fully answered in genus $0$ by Keel (the Chow and cohomology rings are tautological for all $n$) and genus $1$ by Belorousski (the rings are tautological if and only if $n \leq 10$). For $g \geq 2$, work of van Zelm shows the Chow and cohomology rings are not tautological once $2g + n \geq 24$, leaving finitely many open cases. Here, we prove that the Chow and cohomology rings of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ are isomorphic and generated by tautological classes for $g = 2$ and $n \leq 9$ and for $3 \leq g \leq 7$ and $2g + n \leq 14$. For such $(g, n)$, this implies that the tautological ring is Gorenstein and $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ has polynomial point count.

Abstract:We construct some analog of cubical Bloch's higher Chow groups. Instead of considering cycles in $X\times\mathbb A^n$ we consider varieties $Y$ over $X$ together with a distinguished element in the $n$-th exterior power of the multiplicative group of the field of fraction on $Y$. This definition allows us to make sense of a cycle in $X\times\mathbb A^n$ intersecting faces improperly as an element in this complex. We prove that this complex is well-defined and study its basic properties: flat pullback, the localization sequence etc. As an application we prove that the cohomology of this complex in degrees $m-1, m$ and weight $m$ isomorphic to the cohomology of polylogarithmic complex.

The Chow rings of the moduli spaces of curves of genus 7, 8, and 9

Abstract:The rational Chow ring of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g$ of curves of genus $g$ is known for $g \leq 6$. Here, we determine the rational Chow rings of $\mathcal{M}_7, \mathcal{M}_8,$ and $\mathcal{M}_9$ by showing they are tautological. One key ingredient is intersection theory on Hurwitz spaces of degree $4$ and $5$ covers of $\mathbb{P}^1$, as developed by the authors in [1]. The main focus of this paper is a detailed geometric analysis of special tetragonal and pentagonal covers whose associated vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^1$ are so unbalanced that they fail to lie in the large open subset considered in [1]. In genus $9$, we use work of Mukai [23] to present the locus of hexagonal curves as a global quotient stack, and, using equivariant intersection theory, we show its Chow ring is generated by restrictions of tautological classes.

Abstract:We describe the $G$-equivariant Grothendieck ring of a regular compactification $X$ of an adjoint symmetric space $G/H$ of minimal rank. This extends the results of Brion and Joshua for the equivariant Chow ring of wonderful symmetric varieties of minimal rank and generalizes the results by the author on the regular compactification of an adjoint semisimple group.

Abstract:The Euler characteristic of all the Chow varieties, of a fixed projective variety, can be collected in a formal power series called the Euler-Chow series. This series coincides with the Hilbert series when the Picard group is a finite generated free abelian group. It is an interesting open problem to find for which varieties this series is rational. A few cases have been computed, and it is suspected that the series is not rational for the blow up of P^2 at nine points in general position. It is very natural to extend this series to Chow motives and ask the question if the series is rational or to find a counterexample. In this short paper we generalized the series and show by an example that the series is not rational. This opens the question of what is the geometrical meaning of the Euler-Chow series.

Abstract:We show that in the case of primary field extensions, the extension of scalars of Deligne $1$-motives admits a left adjoint, called Chow image, and a right adjoint, called Chow trace. This generalizes Chow's results on abelian varieties. Then we study the Chow trace in the framework of Voevodsky's triangulated categories of (étale) motives. With respect to the $1$-motivic $t$-structure on the category of Voevodsky's homological $1$-motives, the zero-th direct image of an abelian variety is given by the Chow trace, and the first direct image is the $0$-motive defined by the (geometric) Lang-Néron group.
