Abstract:We determine that the Chow ring (with ${\bf Q}$-coefficients) of the Hurwitz space parametrizing degree three covers of ${\bf P}^{1}$ is tautological. We also compute the rational Picard groups of auxiliary spaces of degree three maps with special marked points.

Abstract:The rational Chow ring of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g$ of curves of genus $g$ is known for $g \leq 6$. Here, we determine the rational Chow rings of $\mathcal{M}_7, \mathcal{M}_8,$ and $\mathcal{M}_9$ by showing they are tautological. One key ingredient is intersection theory on Hurwitz spaces of degree $4$ and $5$ covers of $\mathbb{P}^1$, as developed by the authors in [1]. The main focus of this paper is a detailed geometric analysis of special tetragonal and pentagonal covers whose associated vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^1$ are so unbalanced that they fail to lie in the large open subset considered in [1]. In genus $9$, we use work of Mukai [23] to present the locus of hexagonal curves as a global quotient stack, and, using equivariant intersection theory, we show its Chow ring is generated by restrictions of tautological classes.

Abstract:We study the Chow ring with rational coefficients of the moduli space $\mathcal F_{2}$ of quasi-polarized $K3$ surfaces of degree $2$. We find generators, relations, and calculate the Chow Betti numbers. The highest nonvanishing Chow group is $\mathsf A^{17}(\mathcal F_2)\cong {\mathbb{Q}}$. We prove that the Chow ring consists of tautological classes and is isomorphic to the even cohomology. The Chow ring is not generated by divisors and does not satisfy duality with respect to the pairing into $\mathsf A^{17}(\mathcal F_2)$. The kernel of the pairing is a 1-dimensional subspace of $\mathsf{A}^{9}(\mathcal F_2)$ which we calculate explicitly. In the appendix, we revisit Kirwan-Lee's calculation of the Poincaré polynomial of $\mathcal{F}_2$.

Abstract:Let H(d) be the (open) Hilbert scheme of rational normal curves of degree d in P^d. A presentation of the integral Chow ring of H(d) is given via equivariant Chow ring computations. Included also in the paper are algebraic computations of the integral equivariant Chow rings of the algebraic groups O(n), SO(2k+1). The results for S0(3)=PGL(2) are needed for the Hilbert scheme calculation.

Abstract:Let $f: X \rightarrow A$ be an abelian cover from a complex algebraic variety with quotient singularities to an abelian variety. We show that $f^*$ induces an isomorphism between the rational cohomology rings $H^\bullet(A, \mathbb{Q})$ and $H^\bullet(X, \mathbb{Q})$ if and only if $f^*$ induces an isomorphism between the Chow rings with rational coefficients $\mathrm{CH}^\bullet(A)_{\mathbb{Q}}$ and $\mathrm{CH}^\bullet(X)_{\mathbb{Q}}$.

Abstract:Abstract We describe the point class and Todd class in the Chow ring of a moduli space of quiver representations, building on a result of Ellingsrud–Strømme. This, together with the presentation of the Chow ring by the second author, makes it possible to compute integrals on quiver moduli. To do so, we construct a canonical morphism of universal representations in great generality, and along the way point out its relation to the Kodaira–Spencer morphism. We illustrate the results by computing some invariants of some “small” Kronecker moduli spaces. We also prove that the first non-trivial (6-dimensional) Kronecker moduli space is isomorphic to the zero locus of a general section of $\mathcal{Q}^{\vee }(1)$ on $\textrm{Gr}(2,8)$.

Abstract:In this paper, we give an explicit construction of higher Chow cycles of type $(2,1)$ on $K3$ surfaces obtained as quadruple coverings of the projective plane ramified along smooth quartics. The construction uses a pair of bitangents of the quartics. We prove that the higher Chow cycles generate a rank 2 subgroup in the indecomposable part of the higher Chow group for very general members, by using a specialization argument and an explicit computation of the regulator map.

Abstract:In this paper, we ask: for which $(g, n)$ is the rational Chow or cohomology ring of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ generated by tautological classes? This question has been fully answered in genus $0$ by Keel (the Chow and cohomology rings are tautological for all $n$) and genus $1$ by Belorousski (the rings are tautological if and only if $n \leq 10$). For $g \geq 2$, work of van Zelm shows the Chow and cohomology rings are not tautological once $2g + n \geq 24$, leaving finitely many open cases. Here, we prove that the Chow and cohomology rings of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ are isomorphic and generated by tautological classes for $g = 2$ and $n \leq 9$ and for $3 \leq g \leq 7$ and $2g + n \leq 14$. For such $(g, n)$, this implies that the tautological ring is Gorenstein and $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ has polynomial point count.

The Chow ring of the universal Picard stack over the hyperelliptic locus

Abstract:Let $\mathscr{J}^d_g \to \mathscr{M}_g$ be the universal Picard stack parametrizing degree $d$ line bundles on genus $g$ curves, and let $\mathscr{J}^d_{2,g}$ be its restriction to locus of hyperelliptic curves $\mathscr{H}_{2,g} \subset \mathscr{M}_g$. We determine the rational Chow ring of $\mathscr{J}^d_{2,g}$ for all $d$ and $g$. In particular, we prove it is generated by restrictions of tautological classes on $\mathscr{J}^d_g$ and we determine all relations among the restrictions of such classes. We also compute the integral Picard group of $\mathscr{J}^d_{2,g}$, completing (and extending to the $\mathrm{PGL}_2$-equivariant case) prior work of Erman and Wood. As a corollary, we prove that $\mathscr{J}^d_{2,g}$ is either a trivial $\mathbb{G}_m$-gerbe over its rigidification, or has Brauer class of order $2$, depending on the parity of $d - g$.

Abstract:We study the integral Chow ring of the stack $\mathcal{H}_{g,n}$ parametrizing $n$-pointed smooth hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$. We compute the integral Chow ring of $\mathcal{H}_{g,n}$ for $n=1,2$ completely, while for $3\leq n\leq2g+2$ we compute it up to the additive order of a single class in degree 2. We obtain partial results also for $n=2g+3$. In particular, taking $g=2$ and recalling that $\mathcal{H}_{2,n}=\mathcal{M}_{2,n}$, our results hold for $\mathrm{CH}^*(\mathcal{M}_{2,n})$ for $1\leq n\leq7$.

Abstract:We show that the chow group of $p$-cycles with rational coefficients are isomorphic to the corresponding rational homology groups for smooth complex projective varieties carrying a holomorphic vector field with an isolated zero locus. As applications, we obtain Chow groups and Lawson homology groups with rational coefficients and verify the Friedlander-Mazur conjecture and the Generalized Hodge conjecture for those varieties.

Abstract:The temperature dependence of the frequency dispersion in the sound velocity and damping of vitreous silica is reanalyzed. Thermally activated relaxation accounts for the sound attenuation observed above 10 K at sonic and ultrasonic frequencies. Its extrapolation to the hypersonic regime reveals that the anharmonic coupling to the thermal bath becomes important in Brillouin-scattering measurements. At 35 GHz and room temperature, the damping due to this anharmonicity is found to be nearly twice that produced by thermally activated relaxation. The analysis also reveals a sizeable velocity increase with temperature which is not related with sound dispersion. This suggests that silica experiences a gradual structural change that already starts well below room temperature.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective quadric defined over a field of characteristic 2. We prove that in the Chow group of codimension 2 or 3 of $X$ the torsion subgroup has at most two elements. In codimension 2, we determine precisely when this torsion subgroup is nontrivial. In codimension 3, we show that there is no torsion if $\dim X\ge 11$. This extends the analogous results in characteristic different from 2, obtained by Karpenko in the nineteen-nineties.

Abstract:We construct new indecomposable elements in the higher Chow group CH2(A,1) of a principally polarized Abelian surface over a non Archimedean local field, which generalize an element constructed by Collino. These elements are constructed using a generalization, due to Birkenhake and Wilhelm, of a classical construction of Humbert, along with some recent work of Bogomolov, Hassett and Tschinkel on deformations of rational curves on a K3 surface. They can be used to prove the non-Archimedean Hodge-D-conjecture - namely, the surjectivity of the boundary map in the localization sequence - in the case when the Abelian surface has good and ordinary reduction. This is a revised and updated version of an earlier preprint with the name `Abelian surfaces, Kummer surfaces and the non-Archimedean Hodge-D-conjecture.'

Abstract:A reciprocal linear space is the image of a linear space under coordinate-wise inversion. These fundamental varieties describe the analytic centers of hyperplane arrangements and appear as part of the defining equations of the central path of a linear program. Their structure is controlled by an underlying matroid. This provides a large family of hyperbolic varieties, recently introduced by Shamovich and Vinnikov. Here we give a definite determinantal representation to the Chow form of a reciprocal linear space. One consequence is the existence of symmetric rank-one Ulrich sheaves on reciprocal linear spaces. Another is a representation of the entropic discriminant as a sum of squares. For generic linear spaces, the determinantal formulas obtained are closely related to the Laplacian of the complete graph and generalizations to simplicial matroids. This raises interesting questions about the combinatorics of hyperbolic varieties and connections with the positive Grassmannian.
