Abstract:The theory of mean field games is a tool to understand noncooperative dynamic stochastic games with a large number of players. Much of the theory has evolved under conditions ensuring uniqueness of the mean field game Nash equilibrium. However, in some situations, typically involving symmetry breaking, non-uniqueness of solutions is an essential feature. To investigate the nature of non-unique solutions, this paper focuses on the technically simple setting where players have one of two states, with continuous time dynamics, and the game is symmetric in the players, and players are restricted to using Markov strategies. All the mean field game Nash equilibria are identified for a symmetric follow the crowd game. Such equilibria correspond to symmetric $\epsilon$-Nash Markov equilibria for $N$ players with $\epsilon$ converging to zero as $N$ goes to infinity. In contrast to the mean field game, there is a unique Nash equilibrium for finite $N.$ It is shown that fluid limits arising from the Nash equilibria for finite $N$ as $N$ goes to infinity are mean field game Nash equilibria, and evidence is given supporting the conjecture that such limits, among all mean field game Nash equilibria, are the ones that are stable fixed points of the mean field best response mapping.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, Volume 56, Issue 1, Page 529-553, February 2024. In this note we prove the uniqueness of solutions to a class of mean field games systems subject to possibly degenerate individual noise. Our results hold true for arbitrary long time horizons and for general nonseparable Hamiltonians that satisfy a so-called displacement monotonicity condition. This monotonicity condition that we propose for nonseparable Hamiltonians is sharper and more general than the one proposed in the work [W. Gangbo et al., Ann. Probab., 50 (2022), pp. 2178–2217]. The displacement monotonicity assumptions imposed on the data actually provide not only uniqueness, but also the existence and regularity of the solutions. Our analysis uses elementary arguments and does not rely on the well-posedness of the corresponding master equations.

Abstract:The unique continuation for partial differential equations means that the solutions on a small domain can uniquely determine the solutions on a larger connected domain. In this note, a new unique continuation property for the Lame system in two dimensions is studied. We prove that, if only one component of the solution to a Lame system can be measured on a small domain, the solution on a larger connected domain can be determined up to at most four constants.

Abstract:In this paper, we established a quantitative unique continuation results for a coupled heat equations, with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, on a bounded convex domain Ω of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ with smooth boundary ∂Ω. Our result shows that the value of the solutions can be determined uniquely by its value on an arbitrary open subset ω of Ω at any given positive time T.

Abstract:We prove a theorem of unique continuation in measure for nonlocal equations of the type $(\partial_t - \Delta)^s u= V(x,t) u$, for $0<s <1$. Our main result, Theorem 1.1, establishes a delicate nonlocal counterpart of the unique continuation in measure for the local case $s=1$.

Abstract:One kind of unique continuation property for a wave equation is discussed. The authors show that, if one classical solution of the wave equation vanishes in an open set on a hyperplane, then it must vanish in a larger set on this hyperplane. The result can be viewed as a localized version of Robbiano's result([9]). The approach involves the localized Fourier-Gauss transformation and unique continuation on a line in the Laplace equation.

Abstract:We consider finite element approximations of unique continuation problems subject to elliptic equations in the case where the normal derivative of the exact solution is known to reside in some finite dimensional space. To give quantitative error estimates we prove Lipschitz stability of the unique continuation problem in the global H1-norm. This stability is then leveraged to derive optimal a posteriori and a priori error estimates for a primal-dual stabilised finite method.

Abstract:This article is concerned with the unique continuation and observability of a semi-linear parabolic system in a bounded domain Ω with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. We first study the existence and uniqueness of the L[[EQUATION]]-solution to the system when the initial value belongs to L[[EQUATION]](Ω)2. We then build up some observation estimates for this system. As a consequence, we can conclude if two solutions are equal over a nonempty open subset ω[[EQUATION]]Ω at some time T>0, then they coincide over Ω[[EQUATION]][0,T].

Abstract:This paper is dedicated to the unique continuation properties of the solutions to nonlinear variational problems. Our analysis covers the case of nonlinear autonomous functionals depending on the gradient, as well as more general double phase and multiphase functionals with $(2,q)$-growth in the gradient. We show that all these cases fall in a class of nonlinear functionals for which we are able to prove weak and strong unique continuation via the almost-monotonicity of Almgren's frequency formula. As a consequence, we obtain estimates on the dimension of the set of points at which both the solution and its gradient vanish.

Unique continuation principles for finite-element discretizations of the Laplacian

Abstract:Unique continuation principles are fundamental properties of elliptic partial differential equations, giving conditions that guarantee that the solution to an elliptic equation must be uniformly zero. Since finite-element discretizations are a natural tool to help gain understanding into elliptic equations, it is natural to ask if such principles also hold at the discrete level. In this work, we prove a version of the unique continuation principle for piecewise-linear and -bilinear finite-element discretizations of the Laplacian eigenvalue problem on polygonal domains in $\mathbb{R}^2$. Namely, we show that any solution to the discretized equation $-\Delta u = \lambda u$ with vanishing Dirichlet and Neumann traces must be identically zero under certain geometric and topological assumptions on the resulting triangulation. We also provide a counterexample, showing that a nonzero \emph{inner solution} exists when the topological assumptions are not satisfied. Finally, we give an application to an eigenvalue interlacing problem, where the space of inner solutions makes an explicit appearance.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a novel unique continuation property for two-dimensional anisotropic elasticity systems with partial information. More precisely, given a homogeneous elasticity system in a connected open bounded domain, we investigate the unique continuation by assuming only the vanishing of one component of the solution in a subdomain. Using the corresponding Riemann function, we prove that the solution vanishes in the whole domain provided that the other component vanishes at one point up to its second derivatives. Further, we construct several examples showing the possibility of further reducing the additional information of the other component. This result possesses remarkable significance in both theoretical and practical aspects because the required data are almost halved for the unique determination of the whole solution.

Abstract:We are concerned with the mathematical study of the Mean Field Games system (MFGS). In the conventional setup, the MFGS is a system of two coupled nonlinear parabolic PDEs of the second order in a backward-forward manner, namely one terminal and one initial conditions are prescribed respectively for the value function and the population density. In this paper, we show that uniqueness of solutions to the MFGS can be guaranteed if, among all four possible terminal and initial conditions, eitheir only two terminal or only two initial conditions are given. In both cases Hölder stability estimates are proven. This means that he accuracies of the solutions are estimated in terms of the given data. Moreover, these estimates readily imply uniqueness of corresponding problems for the MFGS. The main mathematical apparatus to establish those results is two new Carleman estimates, which may find application in other contexts associated with coupled parabolic PDEs.

Abstract:We study the quantitative unique continuation on the boundary for solutions of elliptic equations with Neumann boundary conditions for bounded potentials and boundary potentials on compact manifolds with boundary. The boundary doubling inequality is derived from the combination of local Carleman estimates and global Carleman estimates. Some special attentions are paid to overcome the regularity issues arising from this boundary value problem.

Abstract:The second-order mean field games system (MFGS) in a bounded domain with the lateral Cauchy data are considered. This means that both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary data for the solution of the MFGS are given. Two Hölder stability estimates for two slightly different cases are derived. These estimates indicate how stable the solution of the MFGS is with respect to the possible noise in the lateral Cauchy data. Our stability estimates imply uniqueness. The key mathematical apparatus is the apparatus of two new Carleman estimates.

Abstract:This paper studies the quantitative unique continuation for a semi-linear parabolic-elliptic coupled system on a bounded domain Ω. This system is a simplified version of the chemotaxis model introduced by Keller and Segel in [14]. With the aid of priori L ∞ -estimates (for solutions of the system) built up in this paper, we treat the semi-linear parabolic equation in the system as a linear parabolic equation, and then use the frequency function method and the localization technique to build up two unique continuation inequalities for the system. As a consequence of the above-mentioned two inequalities, we have the following qualitative unique continuation property: if one component of a solution vanishes in a nonempty open subset ω ⊂ Ω at some time T > 0 , then the solution is identically zero.

Abstract:This paper studies the convergence of mean field games with finite state space to mean field games with a continuous state space. We examine a space discretization of a diffusive dynamics, which is reminiscent of the Markov chain approximation method in stochasctic control, but also of finite difference numerical schemes; time remains continuous in the discretization, and the time horizon is arbitrarily long. We are mainly interested in the convergence of the solution of the associated master equations as the number of states tends to infinity. We present two approaches, to treat the case without or with common noise, both under monotonicity assumptions. The first one uses the system of characteristics of the master equation, which is the MFG system, to establish a convergence rate for the master equations without common noise and the associated optimal trajectories, both in case there is a smooth solution to the limit master equation and in case there is not. The second approach relies on the notion of monotone solutions introduced by Bertucci. In the presence of common noise, we show convergence of the master equations, with a convergence rate if the limit master equation is smooth, otherwise by compactness arguments.
