Abstract:We prove a theorem of unique continuation in measure for nonlocal equations of the type $(\partial_t - \Delta)^s u= V(x,t) u$, for $0<s <1$. Our main result, Theorem 1.1, establishes a delicate nonlocal counterpart of the unique continuation in measure for the local case $s=1$.

The proof is mainly based on the Laplace transform and the properties of Bessel functions. Abstract:In this paper, we established a quantitative unique continuation results for a coupled heat equations, with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, on a bounded convex domain Ω of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ with smooth boundary ∂Ω. Our result shows that the value of the solutions can be determined uniquely by its value on an arbitrary open subset ω of Ω at any given positive time T.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend our earlier unique continuation results \cite{PZ2} for the Schrödinger-type inequality $ |\bar\partial u| \le V|u|$ on a domain in $\mathbb C^n$ by removing the smoothness assumption on solutions $u = (u_1, \ldots, u_N)$. More specifically, we establish the unique continuation property for $W_{loc}^{1,1}$ solutions when the potential $V\in L_{loc}^p $, $ p>2n$; and for $W_{loc}^{1,2n+\epsilon}$ solutions when $V\in L_{loc}^{2n}$ with $N=1$ or $n = 2$. Although the unique continuation property fails in general if $V\in L_{loc}^{p}, p<2n$, we show that the property still holds for $W_{loc}^{1,1}$ solutions when $V $ is a small constant multiple of $ \frac{1}{|z|}$.

Abstract:We consider the following question arising in the theory of differential inclusions: given an elliptic set $\Gamma$ and a Sobolev map $u$ whose gradient lies in the quasiconformal envelope of $\Gamma$ and touches $\Gamma$ on a set of positive measure, must $u$ be affine? We answer this question positively for a suitable notion of ellipticity, which for instance encompasses the case where $\Gamma \subset \mathbb R^{2\times 2}$ is an elliptic, smooth, closed curve. More precisely, we prove that the distance of $D u$ to $\Gamma$ satisfies the strong unique continuation property. As a by-product, we obtain new results for nonlinear Beltrami equations and recover known results for the reduced Beltrami equation and the Monge--Ampère equation: concerning the latter, we obtain a new proof of the $W^{2,1+\varepsilon}$-regularity for two-dimensional solutions.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the quantitative estimates of the unique continuation property for solutions of an elliptic equation $\Delta u = V u + W_1 \cdot \nabla u + \hbox{div} (W_2 u)$ in an open, connected subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $d \geq 3$. Here, $V \in L^{q_0}$, $W_1 \in L^{q_1}$, and $W_2 \in L^{q_2}$ with $q_0 > d/2$, $q_1 > d$, and $q_2 > d$. Our aim is to provide an explicit quantification of the unique continuation property with respect to the norms of the potentials. To achieve this, we revisit the Carleman estimates established in [Dehman-Ervedoza-Thabouti-2023] and prove a refined version of them, and we combine them with an argument due to T. Wolff introduced in [Wolff-1992] for the proof of unique continuation for solutions of equations of the form $\Delta u = V u + W_1 \cdot \nabla u$.

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on the quantitative unique continuation property of solutions to \begin{equation*} \Delta^2u=Vu, \end{equation*} where $V\in W^{1,\infty}$. We show that the maximal vanishing order of the solutions is not large than \begin{equation} C\left(\|V\|^{\frac{1}{4}}_{L^{\infty}}+\|\nabla V\|_{L^{\infty}}+1\right). \end{equation} Our key argument is to lift the original equation to that with a positive potential, then decompose the resulted fourth-order equation into a special system of two second-order equations. Based on the special system, we define a variant frequency function with weights and derive its almost monotonicity to establishing some doubling inequalities with explicit dependence on the Sobolev norm of the potential function.

Abstract:We establish a unique continuation property for solutions of the differential inequality $|\nabla u|\leq V|u|$, where $V$ is locally $L^n$ integrable on a domain in $\mathbb R^n$. A stronger uniqueness result is obtained if in addition the solutions are locally Lipschitz. One application is a finite order vanishing property in the $L^2$ sense for the exponential of $W^{1,n}$ functions. We further discuss related results for the Cauchy-Riemann operator $\bar\partial$ and characterize the vanishing order for smooth extension of holomorphic functions across the boundary.

Abstract:This paper is dedicated to the unique continuation properties of the solutions to nonlinear variational problems. Our analysis covers the case of nonlinear autonomous functionals depending on the gradient, as well as more general double phase and multiphase functionals with $(2,q)$-growth in the gradient. We show that all these cases fall in a class of nonlinear functionals for which we are able to prove weak and strong unique continuation via the almost-monotonicity of Almgren's frequency formula. As a consequence, we obtain estimates on the dimension of the set of points at which both the solution and its gradient vanish.

Abstract:We study various qualitative and quantitative (global) unique continuation properties for the fractional discrete Laplacian. We show that while the fractional Laplacian enjoys striking rigidity properties in the form of (global) unique continuation properties, the fractional discrete Laplacian does not enjoy these in general. While discretization thus counteracts the strong rigidity properties of the continuum fractional Laplacian, by discussing quantitative forms of unique continuation, we illustrate that these properties can be recovered if exponentially small (in the lattice size) correction terms are added. In particular, this allows us to deduce stability properties for a discrete, linear inverse problem for the fractional Laplacian. We complement these observations with a transference principle and the discussion of these properties on the discrete torus.

Abstract:We consider finite element approximations of unique continuation problems subject to elliptic equations in the case where the normal derivative of the exact solution is known to reside in some finite dimensional space. To give quantitative error estimates we prove Lipschitz stability of the unique continuation problem in the global H1-norm. This stability is then leveraged to derive optimal a posteriori and a priori error estimates for a primal-dual stabilised finite method.

Abstract:We provide fine asymptotics of solutions of fractional elliptic equations at boundary points where the domain is locally conical; that is, corner type singularities appear. Our method relies on a suitable smoothing of the corner singularity and an approximation scheme, which allow us to provide a Pohozaev type inequality. Then, the asymptotics of solutions at the conical point follow by an Almgren type monotonicity formula, blow-up analysis and Fourier decomposition on eigenspaces of a spherical eigenvalue problem. A strong unique continuation principle follows as a corollary.

Abstract:These notes are intended as an introduction to the question of unique continuation for the wave operator, and some of its applications. The general question is whether a solution to a wave equation in a domain, vanishing on a subdomain has to vanish everywhere. We state and prove two of the main results in the field. We first give a proof of the classical local H{ö}rmander theorem in this context which holds under a pseudoconvexity condition. We then specialize to the case of wave operators with time-independent coefficients and prove the Tataru theorem: local unique continuation holds across any non-characteristic hypersurface. This local result implies a global unique continuation statement which can be interpreted as a converse to finite propagation speed. We finally give an application to approximate controllability, and present without proofs the associated quantitative estimates.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce and analyse an explicit formulation of fractional powers of the parabolic Lamé operator and we then study the extension problem associated to such non-local operators. We also study the various regularity properties of solutions to such an extension problem via a transformation as in Ang et al. (Commun Partial Differ Equ 23:371–385, 1998), Alessandrini and Morassi (Commun Partial Differ Equ 26(9–10):1787–1810, 2001), Eller et al. (Nonlinear partial differential equations andtheir applications, North-Holland, Amsterdam, 2002), and Gurtin (in: Truesdell, C. (ed.) Handbuch der Physik, Springer, Berlin, 1972), which reduces the extension problem for the parabolic Lamé operator to another system that resembles the extension problem for the fractional heat operator. Finally in the case when , by proving a conditional doubling property for solutions to the corresponding reduced system followed by a blowup argument, we establish a space-like strong unique continuation result for .
