Abstract:A graph is Berge if it has no induced odd cycle on at least 5 vertices and no complement of induced odd cycle on at least 5 vertices. A graph is perfect if the chromatic number equals the maximum clique number for every induced subgraph. Chudnovsky, Robertson, Seymour and Thomas proved that every Berge graph either falls into some classical family of perfect graphs, or has a structural fault that cannot occur in a minimal imperfect graph. A corollary of this is the strong perfect graph theorem conjectured by Berge: every Berge graph is perfect. An even pair of vertices in a graph is a pair of vertices such that every induced path between them has even length. Meyniel proved that a minimal imperfect graph cannot contain an even pair. So even pairs may be considered as a structural fault. Chudnovsky et al. do not use them, and it is known that some classes of Berge graph have no even pairs. The aim of this work is to investigate an "even-pair-like" notion that could be a structural fault present in every Berge graph. An odd pair of cliques is a pair of cliques $\{K_1, K_2\}$ such that every induced path from $K_1$ to $K_2$ with no interior vertex in $K_1 \cup K_2$ has odd length. We conjecture that for every Berge graph $G$ on at least two vertices, either one of $G, \bar{G}$ has an even pair, or one of $G, \bar{G}$ has an odd pair of cliques. We conjecture that a minimal imperfect graph has no odd pair of maximal cliques. We prove these conjectures in some special cases. We show that adding all edges between any 2 vertices of the cliques of an odd pair of cliques is an operation that preserves perfectness.

Abstract:An even hole is an induced chordless cycle of even length at least four. A diamond is an induced subgraph isomorphic to K_4-e. We show that graphs without even holes and without diamonds can be decomposed via clique-separators into graphs that have uniformly bounded cliquewidth.

Abstract:It is well-known that an undirected graph has no odd cycle if and only if it is bipartite. A less obvious, but similar result holds for directed graphs: a strongly connected digraph has no odd cycle if and only if it is bipartite. Can this result be further generalized to more general graphs such as edge-colored graphs? In this paper, we study this problem and show how to decide if there exists an odd properly colored cycle in a given edge-colored graph. As a by-product, we show how to detect if there is a perfect matching in a graph with even (or odd) number of edges in a given edge set.

Abstract:A graph $G$ with an even number of edges is called even-decomposable if there is a sequence $V(G)=V_0\supset V_1\supset \dots \supset V_k=\emptyset$ such that for each $i$, $G[V_i]$ has an even number of edges and $V_i\setminus~V_{i+1}$ is an independent set in $G$. The study of this property was initiated recently by Versteegen, motivated by connections to a Ramsey-type problem and questions about graph codes posed by Alon. Resolving a conjecture of Versteegen, we prove that all but an $e^{-\Omega(n^2)}$ proportion of the $n$-vertex graphs with an even number of edges are even-decomposable. Moreover, answering one of his questions, we determine the order of magnitude of the smallest $p=p(n)$ for which the probability that the random graph $G(n,1-p)$ is even-decomposable (conditional on it having an even number of edges) is at least $1/2$. We also study the following closely related property. A graph is called even-degenerate if there is an ordering $v_1,v_2,\dots,v_n$ of its vertices such that each $v_i$ has an even number of neighbours in the set $\{v_{i+1},\dots,v_n\}$. We prove that all but an $e^{-\Omega(n)}$ proportion of the $n$-vertex graphs with an even number of edges are even-degenerate, which is tight up to the implied constant.

Abstract:A perfect matching covering of a graph G is a set of perfect matchings of G such that every edge of G is contained in at least one member of it. Berge conjectured that every bridgeless cubic graph admits a perfect matching covering of order at most 5 (we call such a collection of perfect matchings a Berge covering of G). A cubic graph G is called a Kotzig graph if G has a 3-edge-coloring such that each pair of colors forms a hamiltonian circuit (introduced by R. Haggkvist, K. Markstrom, J Combin Theory Ser B 96 (2006), 183-206). In this article, we prove that if there is a vertex w of a cubic graph G such that G -w, the graph obtained from G - w by suppressing all degree two vertices is a Kotzig graph, then G hasa Berge covering. Path Odd-Covers of Graphs

Abstract:We introduce and study "path odd-covers", a weakening of Gallai's path decomposition problem and a strengthening of the linear arboricity problem. The "path odd-cover number" $p_2(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a collection of paths whose vertex sets are contained in $V(G)$ and whose symmetric difference of edge sets is $E(G)$. We prove an upper bound on $p_2(G)$ in terms of the maximum degree $\Delta$ and the number of odd-degree vertices $v_{\text{odd}}$ of the form $\max\left\{v_{\text{odd}}/{2}, 2\left\lceil {\Delta}/{2}\right \rceil\right\}$. This bound is only a factor of $2$ from a rather immediate lower bound of the form $\max \left\{ {v_{\text{odd}} }/{2} , \left\lceil {\Delta}/{2}\right\rceil \right\}$. We also investigate some natural relaxations of the problem which highlight the connection between the path odd-cover number and other well-known graph parameters. For example, when allowing for subdivisions of $G$, the previously mentioned lower bound is always tight except in some trivial cases. Further, a relaxation that allows for the addition of isolated vertices to $G$ leads to a match with the linear arboricity when $G$ is Eulerian. Finally, we transfer our observations to establish analogous results for cycle odd-covers.

Abstract:For a property $\mathcal{P}$ of graphs, the $\mathcal{P}$-\textsc{Sandwich-Problem}, introduced by Golumbic and Shamir (1993), is the following: Given a pair of graphs $(G_1, G_2)$ on the same vertex set $V$, does there exist a graph $G$ such that $V(G)=V$, $E(G_{1})\subseteq E(G) \subseteq E(G_{2})$, and $G$ satisfies $\mathcal{P}$? A {\em hole} in a graph is an induced subgraph which is a cycle of length at least four. An odd (respectively even) hole is a hole of odd (respectively even) length. Given a class of graphs $\mathcal{C}$ and a graph $G$ we say that $G$ is {\em $\mathcal{C}$-free} if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to a member of $\mathcal{C}$. In this paper we prove that if $\mathcal{P}$ is the property of being odd-hole-free or the property of being even-hole-free, then the $\mathcal{P}$-\textsc{Sandwich-Problem} is NP-hard.

Odd Covers of Complete Graphs and Hypergraphs

Abstract:The `odd cover number' of a complete graph is the smallest size of a family of complete bipartite graphs that covers each edge an odd number of times. For $n$ odd, Buchanan, Clifton, Culver, Nie, O'Neill, Rombach and Yin showed that the odd cover number of $K_n$ is equal to $(n+1)/2$ or $(n+3)/2$, and they conjectured that it is always $(n+1)/2$. We prove this conjecture. For $n$ even, Babai and Frankl showed that the odd cover number of $K_n$ is always at least $n/2$, and the above authors and Radhakrishnan, Sen and Vishwanathan gave some values of $n$ for which equality holds. We give some new examples. Our constructions arise from some very symmetric constructions for the corresponding problem for complete hypergraphs. Thus the odd cover number of the complete 3-graph $K_n^{(3)}$ is the smallest number of complete 3-partite 3-graphs such that each 3-set is in an odd number of them. We show that the odd cover number of $K_n^{(3)}$ is exactly $n/2$ for even $n$, and we show that for odd $n$ it is $(n-1)/2$ for infinitely many values of $n$. We also show that for $r=3$ and $r=4$ the odd cover number of $K_n^{(r)}$ is strictly less than the partition number, answering a question of Buchanan, Clifton, Culver, Nie, O'Neill, Rombach and Yin for those values of $r$.

Abstract:A graph is called odd (respectively, even) if every vertex has odd (respectively, even) degree. Gallai proved that every graph can be partitioned into two even induced subgraphs, or into an odd and an even induced subgraph. We refer to a partition into odd subgraphs as an odd colouring of G . Scott proved that a connected graph admits an odd colouring if and only if it has an even number of vertices. We say that a graph G is k ‐odd colourable if it can be partitioned into at most k odd induced subgraphs. The odd chromatic number of G , denoted by χ odd( G ) , is the minimum integer k for which G is k ‐odd colourable. We initiate the systematic study of odd colouring and odd chromatic number of graph classes. We first consider a question due to Scott, which states that every graph G of even order n has χ odd( G ) ≤ c n , for some positive constant c , by proving that this is indeed the case if G is restricted to having girth at least seven. We also show that any graph G whose all components have even order satisfies χ odd( G ) ≤ 2 Δ − 1 , where Δ is the maximum degree of G . Next, we show that certain interesting classes have bounded odd chromatic number. Our main results in this direction are that interval graphs, graphs of bounded modular‐width all have bounded odd chromatic number. In particular, every even interval graph is 6‐odd colourable, and every even graph is 3 m w ‐odd colourable, where m w is the modular width of a graph.

Abstract:Zarankiewicz proposed the problem of determining the maximum number of edges in an (n, m)-bipartite graph containing no complete bipartite graph K-a,K-b. In this paper, we consider a variant of Zarankiewicz's problem and determine the maximum number of edges of an (n, m)-bipartite graph without containing a linear forest consisting of even paths. Abstract:We give a combinatorial polynomial-time algorithm to find a maximum weight independent set in perfect graphs of bounded degree that do not contain a prism or a hole of length four as an induced subgraph. An even pair in a graph is a pair of vertices all induced paths between which are even. An even set is a set of vertices every two of which are an even pair. We show that every perfect graph that does not contain a prism or a hole of length four as an induced subgraph has a balanced separator which is the union of a bounded number of even sets, where the bound depends only on the maximum degree of the graph. This allows us to solve the maximum weight independent set problem using the well-known submodular function minimization algorithm.

Abstract:Sivaraman conjectured that if $G$ is a graph with no induced even cycle then there exist sets $X_1, X_2 \subseteq V(G)$ satisfying $V(G) = X_1 \cup X_2$ such that the induced graphs $G[X_1]$ and $G[X_2]$ are both chordal. We prove this conjecture in the special case where $G$ contains no sector wheel, namely, a pair $(H, w)$ where $H$ is an induced cycle of $G$ and $w$ is a vertex in $V(G) \setminus V(H)$ such that $N(w) \cap H$ is either $V(H)$ or a path with at least three vertices.

Abstract:Babai and Frankl posed the ``odd cover problem" of finding the minimum cardinality of a collection of complete bipartite graphs such that every edge of the complete graph of order $n$ is covered an odd number of times. In a previous paper with O'Neill, some of the authors proved that this value is always $\lceil n / 2 \rceil$ or $\lceil n / 2 \rceil + 1$ and that it is the former whenever $n$ is a multiple of $8$. In this paper, we determine this value to be $\lceil n / 2 \rceil$ whenever $n$ is odd or equivalent to $18$ modulo $24$. We also further the study of odd covers of graphs which are not complete, wherein edges are covered an odd number of times and nonedges an even number of times by the complete bipartite graphs in the collection. Among various results on disjoint unions, we find the minimum cardinality of an odd cover of a union of odd cliques and of a union of cycles.

Abstract:Discrete Mathematics, Algorithms and Applications, Ahead of Print. We introduce the cycle intersection graph of a graph, an adaptation of the cycle graph of a graph, and use the structure of these graphs to prove an upper bound for the decycling number of all even graphs. This bound is shown to be significantly better when an even graph admits a cycle decomposition in which any two cycles intersect in at most one vertex. Links between the cycle rank of the cycle intersection graph of an even graph and the decycling number of the even graph itself are found. The problem of choosing an ideal cycle decomposition is addressed and is presented as an optimization problem over the space of cycle decompositions of even graphs, and we conjecture that the upper bound for the decycling number of even graphs presented in this paper is best possible.

Abstract:We show that if a non-amenable, quasi-transitive, unimodular graph G has all degrees even then it has a factor-of-iid balanced orientation, meaning each vertex has equal in- and outdegree. This result involves extending earlier spectral-theoretic results on Bernoulli shifts to the Bernoulli graphings of quasi-transitive, unimodular graphs. As a consequence, we also obtain that when G is regular (of either odd or even degree) and bipartite, it has a factor-of-iid perfect matching. This generalizes a result of Lyons and Nazarov beyond transitive graphs.

Abstract:A pure pair of size $t$ in a graph $G$ is a pair $A,B$ of disjoint sets of $t$ vertices such that $A$ is either complete or anticomplete to $B$. It is known that, for every forest $H$, every graph on $n\ge2$ vertices that does not contain $H$ or its complement as an induced subgraph has a pure pair of size $\Omega(n)$; furthermore, this only holds when $H$ or its complement is a forest. In this paper, we look at pure pairs of size $n^{1-c}$, where $0<c<1$. Let $H$ be a graph: does every graph on $n\ge2$ vertices that does not contain $H$ or its complement as an induced subgraph have a pure pair $A,B$ with $|A|,|B|\ge \Omega(|G|^{1-c})$,? The answer is related to the congestion of $H$, the maximum of $1-(|J|-1)/|E(J)|$ over all subgraphs $J$ of $H$ with an edge. (Congestion is nonnegative, and equals zero exactly when $H$ is a forest.) Let $d$ be the smaller of the congestions of $H$ and $\overline{H}$. We show that the answer to the question above is "yes" if $d\le c/(9+15c)$, and "no" if $d>c$.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{G}(m,k)$ be the set of graphs with size $m$ and odd girth (the length of shortest odd cycle) $k$. In this paper, we determine the graph maximizing the spectral radius among $\mathcal{G}(m,k)$ when $m$ is odd. As byproducts, we show that, there is a number $\eta(m,k)>\sqrt{m-k+3}$ such that every non bipartite graph $G$ with size $m$ and spectral radius $\rho\ge \eta(m,k)$ must contain an odd cycle of length less than $k$ unless $m$ is odd and $G\cong SK_{k,m}$, which is the graph obtained by subdividing an edge $k-2$ times of the complete bipartite graph $K_{2,\frac{m-k+2}{2}}$. This result implies the main results of Zhai and Shu [Discrete Math. 345 (2022)] and settles a conjecture of Li and Peng [The Electronic J. Combin. 29 (4) (2022)] as well.

Abstract:In his study of graph codes, Alon introduced the concept of the odd-Ramsey number of a family of graphs $\mathcal{H}$ in $K_n$, defined as the minimum number of colours needed to colour the edges of $K_n$ so that every copy of a graph $H\in \mathcal{H}$ intersects some colour class in an odd number of edges. In this paper, we focus on complete bipartite graphs. First, we completely resolve the problem when $\mathcal{H}$ is the family of all spanning complete bipartite graphs on $n$ vertices. We then focus on its subfamilies, that is, $\{K_{t,n-t}\colon t\in T\}$ for a fixed set of integers $T\subseteq [\lfloor n/2 \rfloor]$. We prove that the odd-Ramsey problem is equivalent to determining the maximum dimension of a linear binary code avoiding codewords of given weights, and leverage known results from coding theory to deduce asymptotically tight bounds in our setting. We conclude with bounds for the odd-Ramsey numbers of fixed (that is, non-spanning) complete bipartite subgraphs.
