Abstract:When discussing the gauge symmetries of any theory, the Henneaux-Teitelboim transformations are often underappreciated or even completely ignored, due to their on-shell triviality. Nevertheless, these gauge transformations play an important role in understanding the structure of the full gauge symmetry group of any theory, especially regarding the subgroup of diffeomorphisms. We give a review of the Henneaux-Teitelboim transformations and the resulting gauge group in the general case, and then discuss its role in the applications to the class of topological theories called nBF models, relevant for the constructions of higher gauge theories and quantum gravity.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### What problems does this paper attempt to solve?
This paper aims to explore and clarify the Henneaux - Teitelboim (HT) gauge symmetry and its applications in higher - order gauge theories. Specifically, the paper attempts to solve the following key problems:
1. **The nature and importance of HT transformations**:
- The paper emphasizes the importance of HT transformations (a gauge symmetry that is usually overlooked or completely ignored) in understanding the structure of the complete gauge symmetry group of any theory, especially in relation to the subgroup of diffeomorphisms.
- Although HT transformations are trivial on - shell (i.e., they have no effect when the classical equations hold), these transformations are very important in off - shell properties, especially in constructing new theories.
2. **The application of HT transformations in topological theories**:
- The paper specifically discusses the application of HT transformations in a class of topological theories called nBF models. These models are crucial for constructing higher - order gauge theories and quantum gravity.
- By studying the Chern - Simons theory and the 3BF theory, the paper shows how HT transformations can provide non - trivial insights in these models and reveal their underlying physical meanings.
3. **The relationship between HT transformations and other gauge symmetries**:
- The paper explores the relationship between HT transformations and ordinary gauge symmetries, especially how they together form a complete gauge symmetry group.
- For example, in the Batalin - Vilkovisky formalism, HT transformations play an important role in ensuring that all gauge transformations can close into a group.
4. **The application of HT transformations in quantum gravity**:
- The paper also discusses the application of HT transformations in modern quantum gravity theories, especially in the spin - foam formalism based on loop quantum gravity.
- By studying the 3BF theory, the paper shows how HT transformations can be an important step in constructing a realistic quantum gravity theory.
### Formula summary
- **Definition of HT transformation**:
\[
\delta_0 \phi_i(x)=\epsilon_{ij}(x)\frac{\delta S}{\delta \phi_j(x)}
\]
where $\epsilon_{ij}(x)$ is an antisymmetric parameter.
- **HT transformation in Chern - Simons theory**:
\[
\delta_0 A^I_\mu=\epsilon^{IJ}_{\mu\nu}\frac{\delta S}{\delta A^J_\nu}
\]
where $\epsilon^{IJ}_{\mu\nu}$ satisfies the antisymmetric condition.
- **HT transformation in 3BF theory**:
\[
\delta_0 \phi_i=\epsilon_{ij}\frac{\delta S}{\delta \phi_j}
\]
where $\phi_i$ includes all field components $B^\alpha_{\mu\nu}, C^a_\mu, D^A, \alpha^\alpha_\mu, \beta^a_{\mu\nu}, \gamma^A_{\mu\nu\rho}$.
### Conclusion
The main purpose of the paper is to provide a comprehensive review of HT transformations and discuss their properties and applications in Chern - Simons theory and 3BF theory. Through these studies, the paper clarifies the gauge symmetry structure of the pure topological 3BF action, as well as the corresponding symmetry of the constrained 2BF action that is classically equivalent to Einstein's general relativity. In addition, the paper discusses in detail the relationship between diffeomorphism symmetry and HT symmetry and makes some conceptual suggestions for future research directions.
