Abstract:In this article, we analyze a magnetic monopole in topological insulators. The monopole obtain a fractional electric charge because of the Witten effect. We consider this system with a microscopic view by adding the Wilson term to the ordinary Dirac Hamiltonian. The Wilson term yields the positive mass shift to the effective mass of the electrons, then the curved domain-wall is dynamically generated around the monopole. The zero-modes of the electrons are localized on the domain-wall, which can be identified as the source of the electric charge.

Hunting Down Magnetic Monopoles in Two-Dimensional Topological Insulators and Superconductors

Abstract:Contrary to the electric charge that generates the electric field, magnetic charge (namely magnetic monopoles) does not exist in the elementary electromagnetism. Consequently, magnetic flux lines only form loops and cannot have a source or a sink in nature. It is thus extraordinary to find that magnetic monopoles can be pictured conceptually in topological materials. Specifically in the 2D topological insulators, the topological invariant corresponds to the total flux of an effective magnetic field (the Berry curvature) over the reciprocal space.It is thus tempting to wrap the 2D reciprocal space into a compact manifold--a torus, and imagine the total flux to originate from magnetic monopoles inside the torus with a quantized total charge. However, such a physically appealing picture has not been realized quantitatively: other than their existence in a toy (actually misleading) picture, the properties of the magnetic monopoles remain unknown. Here, we will address this long-standing problem by hunting down the magnetic monopoles in the reciprocal $k$-space. We will show that a simple and physically useful picture will arrive upon analytically continuing the system to a third imaginary momentum space. We then illustrate the evolution of the magnetic monopoles across the topological phase transition and use it to provide natural explanations on: 1) discontinuous jump of integer topological invariants, 2) the semi-metallic nature on the phase boundary, and 3) how a change of global topology can be induced via a local change in reciprocal space.

Abstract:The fundamental principles of electrodynamics allow an electron carrying both electric monopole (charge) and magnetic dipole (spin) but prohibit its magnetic counterpart. Recently, it was predicted that the magnetic "monopoles" carrying emergent magnetic charges in spin ice systems can induce electric dipoles. The inspiring prediction offers a novel way to study magnetic monopole excitations and magnetoelectric coupling. However, no clear example has been identified up to now. Here, we report the experimental evidence for electric dipoles induced by magnetic monopoles in spin frustrated Tb_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}. The magnetic field applied to pyrochlore Tb_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7} along the [111] direction, brings out a "3-in-1-out" magnetic monopole configuration, and then induces a subtle structural phase transition at H_{c}∼2.3 T. The transition is made evident by the nonlinear phonon splitting under magnetic fields and the anomalous crystal-field excitations of Tb^{3+} ions. The observations consistently point to the displacement of the oxygen O^{''} anions along the [111] axis which gives rise to the formation of electric dipoles. The finding demonstrates that the scenario of magnetic monopole having both magnetic charge and electric dipole is realized in Tb_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7} and sheds light into the coupling between electricity and magnetism of magnetic monopoles in spin frustrated systems.

Abstract:We show that magnetic monopoles appear naturally in granular quantum matter. Their condensation leads to a new state of matter, superinsulation, in which Cooper pairs are bound into purely electric pions by strings of electric flux. These electric flux tubes, the dual of Abrikosov vortices, prevent the separation of charge–hole pairs, thereby causing an infinite resistance, even at finite temperatures, the dual behaviour of superconductors. We will discuss the electric Meissner effect, asymptotic freedom and their measurements and describe the recent direct detection of a linear, confining potential by dynamic relaxation experiments. Finally, we consider dyons, excitations carrying both a magnetic and an electric charge, and show that a condensate of such dyons leads to a possible solution of the mysteries of the pseudogap state of high-Tc cuprates.

Abstract:Monopoles play a center role in gauge theories and topological matter. There are two fundamental types of monopoles in physics: vector monopoles and tensor monopoles. Examples of vector monopoles include the Dirac monopole in three dimensions and Yang monopole in five dimensions, which have been extensively studied and observed in condensed matter or artificial systems. However, tensor monopoles are less studied, and their observation has not been reported. Here we experimentally construct a tunable spin-1 Hamiltonian to generate a tensor monopole and then measure its unique features with superconducting quantum circuits. The energy structure of a 4D Weyl-like Hamiltonian with threefold degenerate points acting as tensor monopoles is imaged. Through quantum-metric measurements, we report the first experiment that measures the Dixmier-Douady invariant, the topological charge of the tensor monopole. Moreover, we observe topological phase transitions characterized by the topological Dixmier-Douady invariant, rather than the Chern numbers as used for conventional monopoles in odd-dimensional spaces.

Abstract:We expand the concept of two-dimensional topological insulators to encompass a novel category known as topological dipole insulators (TDIs), characterized by conserved dipole moments along the $x$-direction in addition to charge conservation. By generalizing Laughlin's flux insertion argument, we prove a no-go theorem and predict possible edge patterns and anomalies in a TDI with both charge $U^e(1)$ and dipole $U^d(1)$ symmetries. The edge of a TDI is characterized as a quadrupolar channel that displays a dipole $U^d(1)$ anomaly. A quantized amount of dipole gets transferred between the edges under the dipolar flux insertion, manifesting as `quantized quadrupolar Hall effect' in TDIs. A microscopic coupled-wire Hamiltonian realizing the TDI is constructed by introducing a mutually commuting pair-hopping terms between wires to gap out all the bulk modes while preserving the dipole moment. The effective action at the quadrupolar edge can be derived from the wire model, with the corresponding bulk dipolar Chern-Simons response theory delineating the topological electromagnetic response in TDIs. Finally, we enrich our exploration of topological dipole insulators to the spinful case and construct a dipolar version of the quantum spin Hall effect, whose boundary evidences a mixed anomaly between spin and dipole symmetry. Effective bulk and the edge action for the dipolar quantum spin Hall insulator are constructed as well.

Detecting Monopole Charge in Weyl Semimetals Via Quantum Interference Transport

Abstract:Topological Weyl semimetals can host Weyl nodes with monopole charges in momentum space. How to detect the signature of the monopole charges in quantum transport remains a challenging topic. Here, we reveal the connection between the parity of monopole charge in topological semimetals and the quantum interference corrections to the conductivity. We show that the parity of monopole charge determines the sign of the quantum interference correction, with odd and even parity yielding the weak antilocalization and weak localization effects, respectively. This is attributed to the Berry phase difference between time-reversed trajectories circulating the Fermi sphere that encloses the monopole charges. From standard Feynman diagram calculations, we further show that the weak-field magnetoconductivity at low temperatures is proportional to +root B in double-Weyl semimetals and -root B in single-Weyl semimetals, respectively, which could be verified experimentally.

Abstract:Existence of the magnetic monopole is compatible with the fundamental laws of nature; however, this elusive particle has yet to be detected experimentally. We show theoretically that an electric charge near a topological surface state induces an image magnetic monopole charge due to the topological magneto-electric effect. The magnetic field generated by the image magnetic monopole may be experimentally measured, and the inverse square law of the field dependence can be determined quantitatively. We propose that this effect can be used to experimentally realize a gas of quantum particles carrying fractional statistics, consisting of the bound states of the electric charge and the image magnetic monopole charge.

Abstract:Among the many far-reaching consequences of the potential existence of a magnetic monopole, it induces a topological zero mode in the Dirac equation, which was derived by Jackiw and Rebbi 48 years ago and has been elusive ever since. Here, we show that the monopole and multi-monopole solutions can be constructed in the band theory by gapping the three-dimensional Dirac points in hedgehog mass configurations. We then experimentally demonstrate such a monopole bound state in an optimized Dirac acoustic crystal structurally modulated in full solid angles. The monopole mode exhibits the optimal scaling behavior - whose modal spacing is inversely proportional to the cubic root of the modal volume. This work completes the kink-vortex-monopole zero-mode trilogy and paves the way for exploring higher-dimensional bulk-topological-defect correspondence.

Abstract:We have given a new description of the lattice Yang-Mills theory a la Cho-Faddeev-Niemi-Shabanov, which has enabled us to confirm in a gauge-independent manner "Abelian"-dominance and magnetic-monopole dominance in the Wilson loop average, yielding a gauge-independent dual superconductor picture for quark confinement. In particular, we have given a new procedure (called reduction) for obtaining a gauge-independent magnetic monopole from a given Yang-Mills field. In this talk, we demonstrate how some of known topological configurations in the SU(2) Yang-Mills theory such as merons and instantons generate closed loops of magnetic-monopole current as the quark confiner, both of which are characterized by the gauge-invariant topological index, topological charge (density) and magnetic charge (density), respectively. We also try to detect which type of topological configurations exist in the lattice data involving magnetic-monopole loops generated by Monte Carlo simulation. Here we apply a new geometrical algorithm based on "computational homology" to discriminating each closed loop from clusters of magnetic-monopole current, since the magnetic-monopole current on a lattice is integer valued.

Abstract:The non-trivial third homotopy class of three-dimensional topological insulators leads to quantized, magneto-electric coefficient or axion angle $\theta= n \pi$, with $n \in \mathbb{Z}$. In Part I, we developed tools for computing $n$ from a staggered symmetry-indicator $\kappa_{AF,j}$ and Wilson loops of non-Abelian, Berry connection in momentum-space, which clearly distinguished between magneto-electrically trivial ($n=0$), and non-trivial ($n=2s$) topological crystalline insulators. In this work, we perform $\mathbb{Z}$-classification of real-space, topological response or $\theta$ by carrying out thought experiments with magnetic, Dirac monopoles. We demonstrate this for non-magnetic and magnetic topological insulators by computing induced electric charge on monopoles or Witten effect. We show that both first- and higher- order topological insulators can exhibit quantized, magneto-electric response, irrespective of the presence of gapless surface-states, and corner-states. Special attention is paid to the response of octupolar higher-order topological insulator, which was originally predicted to be magneto-electrically trivial. The important roles of fermion zero-modes, $\mathcal{CP}$, and flavor symmetries are critically addressed. Our work outlines a unified theoretical framework for addressing dc topological response and topological quantum phase transitions, which cannot be reliably predicted by symmetry-based classification scheme.

Polarization Jumps across Topological Phase Transitions in Two-dimensional Systems

Abstract:In topological phase transitions involving a change in topological invariants such as the Chern number and the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant, the gap closes, and the electric polarization becomes undefined at the transition. In this paper, we show that the jump of polarization across such topological phase transitions in two dimensions is described in terms of positions and monopole charges of Weyl points in the intermediate Weyl semimetal phase. We find that the jump of polarization is described by the Weyl dipole at $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological phase transitions and at phase transitions without any change in the value of the Chern number. Meanwhile, when the Chern number changes at the phase transition, the jump is expressed in terms of the relative positions of Weyl points measured from a reference point in the reciprocal space.

Dichotomous Dynamics of Magnetic Monopole Fluids

Abstract:A recent advance in the study of emergent magnetic monopoles was the discovery that monopole motion is restricted to dynamical fractal trajectories (J. Hallén et al, Science 378, 1218 (2022)) thus explaining the characteristics of magnetic monopole noise spectra (Dusad, R. et al. Nature 571, 234 (2019); Samarakoon, A. M. et al. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. 119, e2117453119 (2022)). Here we apply this new theory to explore the dynamics of field-driven monopole currents, finding them comprised of two quite distinct transport processes: initially swift fractal rearrangements of local monopole configurations followed by conventional monopole diffusion. This theory also predicts a characteristic frequency dependence of the dissipative loss-angle for AC-field-driven currents. To explore these novel perspectives on monopole transport, we introduce simultaneous monopole current control and measurement techniques using SQUID-based monopole current sensors. For the canonical material Dy2Ti2O7, we measure ${\Phi}(t)$, the time-dependence of magnetic flux threading the sample when a net monopole current $J(t) = \dot{\Phi}(t)/\mu_0$ is generated by applying an external magnetic field $B_0(t)$. These experiments find a sharp dichotomy of monopole currents, separated by their distinct relaxation time-constants before and after $t \approx 600 {\mu}s$ from monopole current initiation. Application of sinusoidal magnetic fields $B_0(t) = Bcos({\omega}t)$ generates oscillating monopole currents whose loss angle ${\theta}(f)$ exhibits a characteristic transition at frequency $f \approx 1.8$ kHz over the same temperature range. Finally, the magnetic noise power is also dichotomic, diminishing sharply after $t \approx 600 {\mu}s$. This complex phenomenology represents a new form of heterogeneous dynamics generated by the interplay of fractionalization and local spin configurational symmetry.

A Coherent Physics Picture of Topological Insulators at Single-Particle Level

Abstract:The study of topological property of band insulators is an interesting branch of condensed matter physics. Two types of topologically nontrivial insulators have been extensively studied. The first type is characterized by a nonzero TKNN invariant or Chern number[1] which is directly related to the quantization of Hall conductance in the integer quantum Hall effect. Haledane propose a model with this type of band structure even in the absence of a macroscopic magnetic field[2]. We refer to such materials "Chern insulator". The second type called "Z2 topological insulators" is proposed recently[3, 4]. Quantum spin Hall effect has been predicted and observed in such systems.[5, 6]. Despite the recent intensively study there are still some fundamental problems that aren't quite clear about Z2 insulators even at the single-particle level. For example, it's claimed that Z2 insulators will return to its origin state after two cycles, thus coupling to the reservoirs is important for the Z2 insulators to continuously pump spin[7]. Theoretical and experimental results show quantum spin Hall effect is an edge state transport property of the materials and coupling to the reservoir seems not play an important role. So the Z2 picture is not satisfactory in explaining these phenomena. We study the relationship of the ground states of Z2 insulators and that of Chern insulator. Combined with the results of recent researches on polarization of Chern insulators[8] and topology of edge states[9] we propose a coherent physics picture of topological insulators.

Abstract:Topological states of quantum matter have attracted great attention in condensed matter physics and materials science. The study of time-reversal-invariant topological states in quantum materials has made tremendous progress. However, the study of magnetic topological states falls much behind due to the complex magnetic structures. Here, we predict the tetradymite-type compound MnBi_{2}Te_{4} and its related materials host topologically nontrivial magnetic states. The magnetic ground state of MnBi_{2}Te_{4} is an antiferromagetic topological insulator state with a large topologically nontrivial energy gap (∼0.2 eV). It presents the axion state, which has gapped bulk and surface states, and the quantized topological magnetoelectric effect. The ferromagnetic phase of MnBi_{2}Te_{4} might lead to a minimal ideal Weyl semimetal.

Abstract:Topological magnets are a new family of quantum materials providing great potential to realize emergent phenomena, such as quantum anomalous Hall effect and axion-insulator state. Here we present our discovery that stoichiometric ferromagnet MnBi8Te13 with natural heterostructure MnBi2Te4-(Bi2Te3)3 is an unprecedented half-magnetic topological insulator, with the magnetization existing at the MnBi2Te4 surface but not at the opposite surface terminated by triple Bi2Te3 layers. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements unveil a massive Dirac gap at the MnBi2Te4 surface, and gapless Dirac cone on the other side. Remarkably, the Dirac gap (~28 meV) at MnBi2Te4 surface decreases monotonically with increasing temperature and closes right at the Curie temperature, thereby representing the first smoking-gun spectroscopic evidence of magnetization-induced topological surface gap among all known magnetic topological materials. We further demonstrate theoretically that the half-magnetic topological insulator is desirable to realize the half-quantized surface anomalous Hall effect, which serves as a direct proof of the general concept of axion electrodynamics in condensed matter systems.

Topological Kondo effect with spinful Majorana fermions

Abstract:Motivated by the importance of studying topological superconductors beyond the mean-field approximation, we here investigate mesoscopic islands of time reversal invariant topological superconductors (TRITOPS). We characterize the spectrum in the presence of strong order parameter fluctuations in the presence of an arbitrary number of Kramers pairs of Majorana edge states and study the effect of coupling the Coulomb blockaded island to external leads. In the case of an odd fermionic parity on the island, we derive an unconventional Kondo Hamiltonian in which metallic leads couple to both topological Majorana degrees of freedom (which keep track of the parity in different leads) and the overall spin-1/2 in the island. For the simplest case of a single wire (two pairs of Majorana edge states), we demonstrate that anisotropies are irrelevant in the weak coupling renormalization group flow. This permits us to solve the Kondo problem in the vicinity of a Toulouse-like point using Abelian Bosonization. We demonstrate a residual ground state entropy of $\ln(2)$, which is protected by spin-rotation symmetry, but reduced to $\ln(\sqrt{2})$ (as in the spinless topological Kondo effect) by symmetry breaking perturbations. In the symmetric case, we further demonstrate the simultaneous presence of both Fermi liquid and non-Fermi liquid like thermodynamics (depending on the observable) and derive charge and spin transport signatures of the Coulomb blockaded island.
