Abstract:In this article, we construct integrally closed modules of rank two over a two-dimensional regular local ring. The modules are explicitly constructed from a given complete monomial ideal with respect to a regular system of parameters. Then we investigate their indecomposability. As a consequence, we have a large class of indecomposable integrally closed modules whose Fitting ideal is not simple. This gives an answer to Kodiyalam's question.

Abstract:Let $(R,{\bf m})$ be a two-dimensional regular local ring with infinite residue field. We prove an analogue of the Hoskin-Deligne length formula for a finitely generated, torsion-free, integrally closed $R$-module $M$. As a consequence, we get a formula for the Buchsbaum-Rim multiplicity of $F/M$, where $F = M^{**}$.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian ring and $I$ an ideal of $R$. Assume that for all integers $i$ the local cohomology module $H_I^i(R)$ is $I$-cofinite. Suppose that $R_\mathfrak{p}$ is a regular local ring for all prime ideals $\mathfrak{p}$ that do not contain $I$. In this paper, we prove that if the $I$-cofinite modules forms an abelian category, then for all finitely generated $R$-modules $M$ and all integers $i$, the local cohomology module $H_I^i(M)$ is $I$-cofinite.

Abstract:Let $A$ be a commutative Noetherian ring of characteristic zero and $R=A[X_1, \ldots, X_d]$ be a polynomial ring over $A$ with the standard $\mathbb{N}^d$-grading. Let $I\subseteq R$ be an ideal which can be generated by elements of the form $aU$ where $a \in A$ (possibly nonunit) and $U$ is a monomial in $X_i$'s. We call such an ideal as a `$\mathfrak{C}$-monomial ideal'. Local cohomology modules supported on monomial ideals gain a great deal of interest due to their applications in the context of toric varieties. It was observed that for $\underline{u} \in \mathbb{Z}^d$, their $\underline{u}^{th}$ components depend only on which coordinates of $\underline{u}$ are negative. In this article, we show that this statement holds true in our general setting, even for certain invariants of the components. We mainly focus on the Bass numbers, injective dimensions, dimensions, associated primes, Bernstein-type dimensions, and multiplicities of the components. Under the extra assumption that $A$ is regular, we describe the finiteness of Bass numbers of each component and bound its injective dimension by the dimension of its support. Finally, we present a structure theorem for the components when $A$ is the ring of formal power series in one variable over a characteristic zero field.

Abstract:Let $(A,\frak m)$ be an excellent normal local ring with algebraically closed residue class field. Given integrally closed $\frak m$-primary ideals $I\supset J$, we show that there is a composition series between $I$ and $J$, by integrally closed ideals only. Also we show that any given integrally closed $\fm$-primary ideal $I$, the family of integrally closed ideals $J\subset I, l_A(I/J)=1$ forms an algebraic variety with dimension $\dim A -1$.

When are trace ideals finite?

Abstract:In this paper, we study Noetherian local rings $R$ having a finite number of trace ideals. We proved that such rings are of dimension at most two. Furthermore, if the integral closure of $R/H$, where $H$ is the zeroth local cohomology, is equi-dimensional, then the dimension of $R$ is at most one. In the one-dimensional case, we can reduce to the situation that rings are Cohen-Macaulay. Then, we give a necessary condition to have a finite number of trace ideals in terms of the value set obtained by the canonical module. We also gave the correspondence between trace ideals of $R$ and those of the endomorphism algebra of the maximal ideal of $R$ when $R$ has minimal multiplicity.

Abstract:To each finitely presented module $M$ over a commutative ring $R$ one can associate an $R$-ideal $\mathrm{Fitt}_{R}(M)$, which is called the (zeroth) Fitting ideal of $M$ over $R$. This is of interest because it is always contained in the $R$-annihilator $\mathrm{Ann}_{R}(M)$ of $M$, but is often much easier to compute. This notion has recently been generalised to that of so-called `Fitting invariants' over certain noncommutative rings; the present author considered the case in which $R$ is an $\mathfrak{o}$-order $\Lambda$ in a finite dimensional separable algebra, where $\mathfrak{o}$ is an integrally closed commutative noetherian complete local domain. This article is a survey of known results and open problems in this context. In particular, we investigate the behaviour of Fitting invariants under direct sums. In the appendix, we present a new approach to Fitting invariants via Morita equivalence.

Abstract:Let $(R, \mathfrak{m})$ be a $d$-dimensional Noetherian local ring that is formally equidimensional, and let $M$ be an arbitrary $R$-submodule of the free module $F = R^p$ with an analytic spread $s:=s(M)$. In this work, inspired by Herzog-Puthenpurakal-Verma in \cite{herzog}, we show the existence of an unique largest $R$-module $M_{k}$ with $\ell_R(M_{k}/M)<\infty$ and $M\subseteq M_{s}\subseteq\cdots\subseteq M_{1}\subseteq M_{0}\subseteq q(M),$ such that $°(P_{M_{k}/M}(n))<s-k,$ where $q(M)$ is the relative integral closure of $M,$ defined by $q(M):=\overline{M}\cap M^{sat},$ where $M^{sat}=\cup_{n\geq 1}(M:_F\mathfrak{m}^n)$ is the saturation of $M$. We also provide a structure theorem for these modules. Furthermore, we establish the existence of coefficient modules between $I(M)M$ and $M$, where $I(M)$ denotes the $0$-th Fitting ideal of $F/M$, and discuss their structural properties. Finally, we present some applications and discuss some properties.

We present an action of a group, non-commutative in general, on the set of Eisenstein polynomials, of degree matching the ramification index of the ring, over the coefficient ring. The action is defined by taking resultants.

Abstract:This work concerns the stable module category of a finite group over a field of characteristic dividing the group order. The minimal localising tensor ideals correspond to the non-maximal homogeneous prime ideals in the cohomology ring of the group. Given such a prime ideal, a number of characterisations of the dualisable objects in the corresponding tensor ideal are given. One characterisation of interest is that they are exactly the modules whose restriction along a corresponding $\pi$-point are finite dimensional plus projective. A key insight is the identification of a special property of the stable module category that controls the cohomological behaviour of local dualisable objects. This property, introduced in this work for general triangulated categories and called local regularity, is related to strong generation. A major part of the paper is devoted to developing this notion and investigating its ramifications for various special classes of objects in tensor triangulated categories.

Fitting Ideals of Projective Limits of Modules over Non-Noetherian Iwasawa Algebras

Abstract:Greither and Kurihara proved a theorem about the commutativity of projective limits and Fitting ideals for modules over the classical equivariant Iwasawa algebra $\Lambda_G=\mathbb{Z}_p[[T]][G]$, where $G$ is a finite, abelian group and $\Bbb Z_p$ is the ring of $p$--adic integers, for some prime $p$. In this paper, we generalize their result first to the Noetherian Iwasawa algebra $\mathbb{Z}_p[[T_1, T_2, \cdots, T_n]][G]$ and, most importantly, to the non-Noetherian algebra $\mathbb{Z}_p[[T_1, T_2, \cdots, T_n, \cdots]][G]$ of countably many generators. The latter generalization is motivated by the recent work of Bley-Popescu on the geometric Equivariant Iwasawa Conjecture for function fields, where the Iwasawa algebra is not Noetherian, of the type described above. Applications of these results to the emerging field of non-Noetherian Iwasawa Theory will be given in an upcoming paper.

Abstract:We define a congruence module $\Psi_A(M)$ associated to a surjective $\mathcal O$-algebra morphism $\lambda\colon A \to \mathcal{O}$, with $\mathcal{O}$ a discrete valuation ring, $A$ a complete noetherian local $\mathcal{O}$-algebra regular at $\mathfrak{p}$, the kernel of $\lambda$, and $M$ a finitely generated $A$-module. We establish a numerical criterion for $M$ to have a free direct summand over $A$ of positive rank. It is in terms of the lengths of $\Psi_A(M)$ and the torsion part of $\mathfrak{p}/\mathfrak{p}^2$. It generalizes results of Wiles, Lenstra, and Diamond, that deal with the case when the codimension of $\mathfrak{p}$ is zero. Number theoretic applications include integral (non-minimal) $R=\mathbb T$ theorems in situations of positive defect conditional on certain standard conjectures. Here $R$ is a deformation ring parametrizing certain Galois representations and $\mathbb T$ is a Hecke algebra. An example is a modularity lifting for 2-dimensional $\ell$-adic Galois representations over an imaginary quadratic field. The proofs combine our commutative algebra results with a generalization due to Calegari and Geraghty of the patching method of Wiles and Taylor--Wiles and level raising arguments that go back to Ribet. The results provide new evidence in favor of the intriguing, and as yet fledgling, torsion analog of the classical Langlands correspondence. We also prove unconditional integral $R=\mathbb T$ results for Hecke algebras $\mathbb T$ acting on weight one cohomology of Shimura curves over $\mathbb Q$. This leads to a torsion Jacquet--Langlands correspondence comparing integral Hecke algebras acting on weight one cohomology of Shimura curves and modular curves. In this case the cohomology has abundant torsion and so our correspondence cannot be deduced by means of the classical Jacquet--Langlands correspondence.
