Abstract:Let $R$ be local Noetherian ring of depth at least two. We prove that there are indecomposable $R$-modules which are free on the punctured spectrum of constant, arbitrarily large, rank.

Abstract:In this article, we construct integrally closed modules of rank two over a two-dimensional regular local ring. The modules are explicitly constructed from a given complete monomial ideal with respect to a regular system of parameters. Then we investigate their indecomposability. As a consequence, we have a large class of indecomposable integrally closed modules whose Fitting ideal is not simple. This gives an answer to Kodiyalam's question.

Abstract:We construct examples of bounded below, noncontractible, acyclic complexes of finitely generated projective modules over some rings S , as well as bounded above, noncontractible, acyclic complexes of injective modules. The rings S are certain rings of infinite matrices with entries in the rings of commutative polynomials or formal power series in infinitely many variables. In the world of comodules or contramodules over coalgebras over fields, similar examples exist over the cocommutative symmetric coalgebra of an infinite-dimensional vector space. A simpler, universal example of a bounded below, noncontractible, acyclic complex of free modules with one generator, communicated to the author by Canonaco, is included at the end of the paper.

Abstract:It is proved that, for a left hereditary ring, an arbitrary left module has a representation in the form of the direct sum of a stable left module and indecomposable projective left modules (if and only if an arbitrary left module has a representation in the form of the direct sum of a stable left module and a projective left module) if and only if the ring is left perfect and right coherent. In that case, the above-mentioned representations are unique up to isomorphism; the latter representation is also functorial. The essential ingredient in the proofs of the above-mentioned statements is a certain purely categorical result. These statements, in particular, imply that, for any principal ideal domain that is not a field, the fundamental theorem on finitely generated modules over it can not be generalized to the case of all modules. Moreover, with the aid of the above-mentioned categorical approach, we give a new proof of the Zheng-Xu He's result asserting that any module of a ring has a unique up to isomorphism injective-costable decomposition if and only if the ring is left hereditary and left Noetherian. The above-mentioned statements, in particular, imply that if the category of left modules over a left hereditary ring is Krull-Schmidt, then the ring is left Artinian. Yet another criterion for a ring to be left hereditary, left perfect and right coherent (resp. left hereditary left Noetherian) found in the paper requires that the pair $(Stable$ $modules$, $Projective$ $modules)$ (resp. $(Injective$ $Modules, Costable$ $ Modules)$) of module classes be a pre-torsion theory. This implies that the pair $(Stable$ $modules$, $Projective$ $modules)$ is a torsion theory if and only if the ring is left hereditary and the injective envelope of the ring, viewed as a left module over itself, is projective.

Abstract:A left and right noetherian semiperfect ring R is known to be indecomposable if and only if its factor by the second power of Jacobson radical is. This characterisation is used to study simple R-modules in terms of their Ext groups. It is shown that if R is indecomposable, all its simple modules are either finite or have the same infinite cardinality and their endomorphism rings have the same characteristics. The results are further strengthened in the case when R is quasi-Frobenius.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a commutative ring. One may ask when a general $R$-module $P$ that satisfies $P \oplus R \cong R^n$ has a free summand of a given rank. M. Raynaud translated this question into one about sections of certain maps between Stiefel varieties: if $V_r(\mathbb{A}^n)$ denotes the Stiefel variety $\textrm{GL}(n) / \textrm{GL}(n-r)$ over a field $k$, then the projection $V_r(\mathbb{A}^n) \to V_1(\mathbb{A}^n)$ has a section if and only if the following holds: any module $P$ over any $k$-algebra $R$ with the property that $P \oplus R \cong R^n$ has a free summand of rank $r-1$. Using techniques from $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy theory, we characterize those $n$ for which the map $V_r(\mathbb{A}^n) \to V_1(\mathbb{A}^n)$ has a section in the cases $r=3,4$ under some assumptions on the base field. We conclude that if $P \oplus R \cong R^{24m}$ and $R$ contains a field of characteristic $0$, then $P$ contains a free summand of rank $2$. If $R$ contains a quadratically closed field of characteristic $0$, or the field of real numbers, then $P$ contains a free summand of rank $3$. The analogous results hold for schemes and vector bundles over them.

Abstract:We provide a certain direct-sum decomposition of reflexive modules over (one-dimensional) Arf local rings. We also see the equivalence of three notions, say, integrally closed ideals, trace ideals, and reflexive modules of rank one (i.e., divisorial ideals) up to isomorphisms in Arf rings. As an application, we obtain the finiteness of indecomposable reflexive modules, up to isomorphism, for analytically irreducible Arf local rings.

Abstract:We study the problem of indecomposability of translations of simple modules in the principal block of BGG category $\mathcal{O}$ for $\mathfrak{sl}_n$, as conjectured in \cite{KiM}. We describe some general techniques and prove a few general results which may be applied to study various special cases of this problem. We apply our results to verify indecomposability for $n\leq 6$. We also study the problem of indecomposability of shufflings and twistings of simple modules and obtain some partial results.
Congruence modules and the Wiles-Lenstra-Diamond numerical criterion in higher codimensions

Abstract:We define a congruence module $\Psi_A(M)$ associated to a surjective $\mathcal O$-algebra morphism $\lambda\colon A \to \mathcal{O}$, with $\mathcal{O}$ a discrete valuation ring, $A$ a complete noetherian local $\mathcal{O}$-algebra regular at $\mathfrak{p}$, the kernel of $\lambda$, and $M$ a finitely generated $A$-module. We establish a numerical criterion for $M$ to have a free direct summand over $A$ of positive rank. It is in terms of the lengths of $\Psi_A(M)$ and the torsion part of $\mathfrak{p}/\mathfrak{p}^2$. It generalizes results of Wiles, Lenstra, and Diamond, that deal with the case when the codimension of $\mathfrak{p}$ is zero. Number theoretic applications include integral (non-minimal) $R=\mathbb T$ theorems in situations of positive defect conditional on certain standard conjectures. Here $R$ is a deformation ring parametrizing certain Galois representations and $\mathbb T$ is a Hecke algebra. An example is a modularity lifting for 2-dimensional $\ell$-adic Galois representations over an imaginary quadratic field. The proofs combine our commutative algebra results with a generalization due to Calegari and Geraghty of the patching method of Wiles and Taylor--Wiles and level raising arguments that go back to Ribet. The results provide new evidence in favor of the intriguing, and as yet fledgling, torsion analog of the classical Langlands correspondence. We also prove unconditional integral $R=\mathbb T$ results for Hecke algebras $\mathbb T$ acting on weight one cohomology of Shimura curves over $\mathbb Q$. This leads to a torsion Jacquet--Langlands correspondence comparing integral Hecke algebras acting on weight one cohomology of Shimura curves and modular curves. In this case the cohomology has abundant torsion and so our correspondence cannot be deduced by means of the classical Jacquet--Langlands correspondence.

Abstract:Let $(R, \mathfrak{m})$ be a $d$-dimensional Noetherian local ring that is formally equidimensional, and let $M$ be an arbitrary $R$-submodule of the free module $F = R^p$ with an analytic spread $s:=s(M)$. In this work, inspired by Herzog-Puthenpurakal-Verma in \cite{herzog}, we show the existence of an unique largest $R$-module $M_{k}$ with $\ell_R(M_{k}/M)<\infty$ and $M\subseteq M_{s}\subseteq\cdots\subseteq M_{1}\subseteq M_{0}\subseteq q(M),$ such that $°(P_{M_{k}/M}(n))<s-k,$ where $q(M)$ is the relative integral closure of $M,$ defined by $q(M):=\overline{M}\cap M^{sat},$ where $M^{sat}=\cup_{n\geq 1}(M:_F\mathfrak{m}^n)$ is the saturation of $M$. We also provide a structure theorem for these modules. Furthermore, we establish the existence of coefficient modules between $I(M)M$ and $M$, where $I(M)$ denotes the $0$-th Fitting ideal of $F/M$, and discuss their structural properties. Finally, we present some applications and discuss some properties.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. Given an indecomposable G-module $M$, one can ask when it remains indecomposable upon restriction to the Frobenius kernel $G_r$, and when its $G_r$-socle is simple (the latter being a strictly stronger condition than the former). In this paper, we investigate these questions for $G$ having an irreducible root system of type A. Using Schur functors and inverse Schur functors as our primary tools, we develop new methods of attacking these problems, and in the process obtain new results about classes of Weyl modules, induced modules, and tilting modules that remain indecomposable over $G_r$.

Abstract:Following the well-established terminology in commutative algebra, any (not necessarily commutative) finite-dimensional local algebra.. with radical.. will be said to be short provided J(3) = 0. As in the commutative case, we show: If a short local algebra.. has an indecomposable non-projective Gorenstein-projective module M, then either A is self-injective (so that all modules are Gorenstein-projective) and then, of course, vertical bar J(2)vertical bar <= 1, or else vertical bar J(2)vertical bar = vertical bar J/J(2)vertical bar - 1 and vertical bar JM vertical bar = vertical bar J(2)vertical bar vertical bar M/JM vertical bar. More generally, we focus the attention to semi-Gorensteinprojective and 8-torsionfree modules, even to Omega-paths of length 2, 3 and 4. In particular, we show that the existence of a non-projective reflexive module implies that vertical bar J(2)vertical bar < vertical bar J/J(2)vertical bar and further restrictions. In addition, we consider exact complexes of projective modules with a non-projective image. Again, as in the commutative case, we see that if such a complex exists, then.. is self-injective or satisfies the condition vertical bar J(2)vertical bar = vertical bar J/J(2)vertical bar - 1. Also, we show that any non-projective semi-Gorensteinprojective module M satisfies Ext(1)(M, M) not equal 0. In this way, we prove the Auslander-Reiten conjecture (one of the classical homological conjectures) for arbitrary short local algebras. Many arguments used in the commutative case actually work in general, but there are interesting differences and some of our results may be new also in the commutative case.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a (possibly noncommutative) ring and let $\mathcal C$ be a class of finitely generated (right) $R$-modules which is closed under finite direct sums, direct summands, and isomorphisms. Then the set $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ of isomorphism classes of modules is a commutative semigroup with operation induced by the direct sum. This semigroup encodes all possible information about direct sum decompositions of modules in $\mathcal C$. If the endomorphism ring of each module in $\mathcal C$ is semilocal, then $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ is a Krull monoid. Although this fact was observed nearly a decade ago, the focus of study thus far has been on ring- and module-theoretic conditions enforcing that $\mathcal V(\mathcal C)$ is Krull. If $\mathcal V(\mathcal C)$ is Krull, its arithmetic depends only on the class group of $\mathcal V(\mathcal C)$ and the set of classes containing prime divisors. In this paper we provide the first systematic treatment to study the direct-sum decompositions of modules using methods from Factorization Theory of Krull monoids. We do this when $\mathcal C$ is the class of finitely generated torsion-free modules over certain one- and two-dimensional commutative Noetherian local rings.

Construction of irreducible $\mathcal{U}(\mathfrak{g})^{G'}$-modules and discretely decomposable restrictions

Abstract:In this paper, we study the irreducibility of $\mathcal{U}(\mathfrak{g})^{G'}$-modules on the spaces of intertwining operators in the branching problem of reductive Lie algebras, and construct a family of finite-dimensional irreducible $\mathcal{U}(\mathfrak{g})^{G'}$-modules using the Zuckerman derived functors. We provide criteria for the irreducibility of $\mathcal{U}(\mathfrak{g})^{G'}$-modules in the cases of generalized Verma modules, cohomologically induced modules, and discrete series representations. We treat only discrete decomposable restrictions with certain dominance conditions (quasi-abelian and in the good range). To describe the $\mathcal{U}(\mathfrak{g})^{G'}$-modules, we give branching laws of cohomologically induced modules using ones of generalized Verma modules when $K'$ acts on $K/L_K$ transitively.

Abstract:Over a Cohen-Macaulay (CM) local ring, we characterize those modules that can be obtained as a direct limit of finitely generated maximal CM modules. We point out two consequences of this characterization: (1) Every balanced big CM module, in the sense of Hochster, can be written as a direct limit of small CM modules. In analogy with Govorov and Lazard's characterization of flat modules as direct limits of finitely generated free modules, one can view this as a "structure theorem" for balanced big CM modules. (2) Every finitely generated module has a preenvelope with respect to the class of finitely generated maximal CM modules. This result is, in some sense, dual to the existence of maximal CM approximations, which is proved by Auslander and Buchweitz.

Abstract:We continue [GbSh:568] (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.LO/0003164" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.LO/0003164">math.LO/0003164</a>), proving a stronger result under the special continuum hypothesis (CH). The original question of Eklof and Mekler related to dual abelian groups. We want to find a particular example of a dual group, which will provide a negative answer to the question. In order to derive a stronger and also more general result we will concentrate on reflexive modules over countable principal ideal domains R. Following <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://H.Bass" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, an R-module G is reflexive if the evaluation map s:G-->G^{**} is an isomorphism. Here G^*=Hom(G,R) denotes the dual group of G. Guided by classical results the question about the existence of a reflexive R-module G of infinite rank with G not cong G+R is natural. We will use a theory of bilinear forms on free R-modules which strengthens our algebraic results in [GbSh:568] (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.LO/0003164" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.LO/0003164">math.LO/0003164</a>). Moreover we want to apply a model theoretic combinatorial theorem from [Sh:e] which allows us to avoid the weak diamond principle. This has the great advantage that the used prediction principle is still similar to the diamond, but holds under CH.

Abstract:We introduce and study a notion of dimly liftable modules; these are modules that are liftable to the right dimension to a regular local ring. We establish special new cases of Serre's positivity conjecture over ramified regular local rings by proving it for dimly liftable modules. Furthermore, we show that the length of a nonzero finite length dimly liftable module is bounded below by the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of the local ring. This establishes special cases of the Length Conjecture of Iyengar-Ma-Walker.
