Abstract:An $n\times n$ nilpotent matrix $B$ is determined up to conjugacy by a partition $P_B$ of $n$, its Jordan type given by the sizes of its Jordan blocks. The Jordan type $\mathfrak D(P)$ of a nilpotent matrix in the dense orbit of the nilpotent commutator of a given nilpotent matrix of Jordan type $P$ is stable - has parts differing pairwise by at least two - and was determined by R. Basili. The second two authors, with B. Van Steirteghem and R. Zhao determined a rectangular table of partitions $\mathfrak D^{-1}(Q)$ having a given stable partition $Q$ as the Jordan type of its maximum nilpotent commutator. They proposed a box conjecture, that would generalize the answer to stable partitions $Q$ having $\ell$ parts: it was proven recently by J.~Irving, T. Košir and M. Mastnak. Using this result and also some tropical calculations, the authors here determine equations defining the loci of each partition in $\mathfrak D^{-1}(Q)$, when $Q$ is stable with two parts. The equations for each locus form a complete intersection. The authors propose a conjecture generalizing their result to arbitrary stable $Q$.

Commuting matrices via commuting endomorphisms

Abstract:Evidences have suggested that counting representations are sometimes tractable even when the corresponding classification problem is almost impossible, or "wild" in a precise sense. Such counting problems are directly related to matrix counting problems, many of which are under active research. Using a general framework we formulate for such counting problems, we reduce some counting problems about commuting matries to problems about endomorphisms on all finite abelian $p$-groups. As an application, we count finite modules on some first examples of nonreduced curves over $\mathbb{F}_q$. We also relate some classical and hard problems regarding commuting triples of matrices to a conjecture of Onn on counting conjugacy classes of the automorphism group of an arbitrary finite abelian $p$-group.

Commuting Local Hamiltonians Beyond 2D

Abstract:Commuting local Hamiltonians provide a testing ground for studying many of the most interesting open questions in quantum information theory, including the quantum PCP conjecture and the existence of area laws. Although they are a simplified model of quantum computation, the status of the commuting local Hamiltonian problem remains largely unknown. A number of works have shown that increasingly expressive families of commuting local Hamiltonians admit completely classical verifiers. Despite intense work, the largest class of commuting local Hamiltonians we can place in NP are those on a square lattice, where each lattice site is a qutrit. Even worse, many of the techniques used to analyze these problems rely heavily on the geometry of the square lattice and the properties of the numbers 2 and 3 as local dimensions. In this work, we present a new technique to analyze the complexity of various families of commuting local Hamiltonians: guided reductions. Intuitively, these are a generalization of typical reduction where the prover provides a guide so that the verifier can construct a simpler Hamiltonian. The core of our reduction is a new rounding technique based on a combination of Jordan's Lemma and the Structure Lemma. Our rounding technique is much more flexible than previous work, and allows us to show that a larger family of commuting local Hamiltonians is in NP, albiet with the restriction that all terms are rank-1. Specifically, we prove the following two results: 1. Commuting local Hamiltonians in 2D that are rank-1 are contained in NP, independent of the qudit dimension. Note that this family of commuting local Hamiltonians has no restriction on the local dimension or the locality. 2. We prove that rank-1, 3D commuting Hamiltonians with qudits on edges are in NP. To our knowledge this is the first time a family of 3D commuting local Hamiltonians has been contained in NP.

Abstract:The target of this article is to discuss the concept of \textit{commuting probability} of finite groups which, in short, is a probabilistic measure of how abelian our group is. We shall compute the value of commuting probability for many special classes of non-abelian groups and also establish some local and global bounds. We will conclude with a few topics for further reading.

Commuting Local Hamiltonian Problem on 2D beyond qubits

Abstract:We study the complexity of local Hamiltonians in which the terms pairwise commute. Commuting local Hamiltonians (CLHs) provide a way to study the role of non-commutativity in the complexity of quantum systems and touch on many fundamental aspects of quantum computing and many-body systems, such as the quantum PCP conjecture and the area law. Despite intense research activity since Bravyi and Vyalyi introduced the CLH problem two decades ago [BV03], its complexity remains largely unresolved; it is only known to lie in NP for a few special cases. Much of the recent research has focused on the physically motivated 2D case, where particles are located on vertices of a 2D grid and each term acts non-trivially only on the particles on a single square (or plaquette) in the lattice. In particular, Schuch [Sch11] showed that the CLH problem on 2D with qubits is in NP. Aharonov, Kenneth and Vigdorovich~[AKV18] then gave a constructive version of this result, showing an explicit algorithm to construct a ground state. Resolving the complexity of the 2D CLH problem with higher dimensional particles has been elusive. We prove two results for the CLH problem in 2D: (1) We give a non-constructive proof that the CLH problem in 2D with qutrits is in NP. As far as we know, this is the first result for the commuting local Hamiltonian problem on 2D beyond qubits. Our key lemma works for general qudits and might give new insights for tackling the general case. (2) We consider the factorized case, also studied in [BV03], where each term is a tensor product of single-particle Hermitian operators. We show that a factorized CLH in 2D, even on particles of arbitrary finite dimension, is equivalent to a direct sum of qubit stabilizer Hamiltonians. This implies that the factorized 2D CLH problem is in NP. This class of CLHs contains the Toric code as an example.

Abstract:Let $KQ$ be a path algebra, where $Q$ is a finite quiver and $K$ is a field. We study $KQ/C$ where $C$ is the two-sided ideal in $KQ$ generated by all differences of parallel paths in $Q$. We show that $KQ/C$ is always finite dimensional and its global dimension is finite. Furthermore, we prove that $KQ/C$ is Morita equivalent to an incidence algebra. The paper starts with the more general setting, where $KQ$ is replaced by $KQ/I$ with $I$ a two-sided ideal in $KQ$.

Characterization of commuting graphs of finite groups having small genus

Abstract:In this paper we first show that among all double-toroidal and triple-toroidal finite graphs only $K_8 \sqcup 9K_1$, $K_8 \sqcup 5K_2$, $K_8 \sqcup 3K_4$, $K_8 \sqcup 9K_3$, $K_8\sqcup 9(K_1 \vee 3K_2)$, $3K_6$ and $3K_6 \sqcup 4K_4 \sqcup 6K_2$ can be realized as commuting graphs of finite groups. As consequences of our results we also show that for any finite non-abelian group $G$ if the commuting graph of $G$ (denoted by $\Gamma_c(G)$) is double-toroidal or triple-toroidal then $\Gamma_c(G)$ and its complement satisfy Hansen-Vuki{č}evi{ć} Conjecture and E-LE conjecture. In the process we find a non-complete graph, namely the non-commuting graph of the group $(\mathbb{Z}_3 \times \mathbb{Z}_3) \rtimes Q_8$, that is hyperenergetic. This gives a new counter example to a conjecture of Gutman regarding hyperenergetic graphs.

A Proof of the Box Conjecture for Commuting Pairs of Matrices

Abstract:We prove the Box Conjecture for pairs of commuting nilpotent matrices, as formulated by Iarrobino et al [28]. This describes the Jordan type of the dense orbit in the nilpotent commutator of a given nilpotent matrix. Our main tool is the Burge correspondence between the set of all partitions and a set of binary words [15, 16]. For connection with the algebraic and geometric setup of matrices and orbits we employ some of Shayman's results on invariant subspaces of a nilpotent matrix [45, 46]. Our proof is valid over an arbitrary field.

Abstract:We investigate properties which ensure that a given finite graph is the commuting graph of a group or semigroup. We show that all graphs on at least two vertices such that no vertex is adjacent to all other vertices is the commuting graph of some semigroup. Moreover, we obtain a complete classification of the graphs with an isolated vertex or edge that are the commuting graph of a group and the cycles that are the commuting graph of a centrefree semigroup.

Abstract:The main purpose of this article is to show that every commuting Jordan derivation on triangular rings (unital or not) is identically zero. Using this result, we prove that if $\mathcal{A}$ is a 2-torsion free ring such that it is either semiprime or satisfies Condition (P), then every commuting Jordan derivation from $\mathcal{A}$ into itself, under certain conditions, is identically zero.

Abstract:Journal of Algebra and Its Applications, Ahead of Print. Let [math] be a group. If the set [math] forms a subgroup of [math], then G is called [math]-group. Recently, it has been proven that the minimum coclass of a non-[math][math]-group is equal to [math]. In this paper, we deal with finite [math]-groups of coclass [math]. We prove that a finite [math]-group [math] of order [math], [math], of coclass [math] for an odd prime [math] is an [math]-group except when the nilpotency class of the second term of upper central series [math], [math], is equal to [math]. In particular, we show that in this case, center of [math], [math], and commutator subgroup [math], [math], are of order [math] and [math], respectively, and [math] is a group of order [math]. Also, we give some sufficient conditions on a finite 2-group [math] of coclass [math] implying that [math] is an [math]-group.

Abstract:For a given p×q complex matrix C , a necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for the existence of a matrix X satisfying JpX−XJq=C , here Jr denotes the r×r Jordan block of 0. An easy construction of the solution X is given if it exists. These results lead to a proof of the fact that a nilpotent matrix is similar to a direct sum of Jordan blocks.

Constructing Nearby Commuting Matrices for Ogata's Theorem on Macroscopic Observables

Abstract:Resolving a conjecture of von Neumann, Ogata's theorem in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1111.5933" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1111.5933">arXiv:1111.5933</a> showed the highly nontrivial result that arbitrarily many matrices corresponding to macroscopic observables with $N$ sites and a fixed site dimension $d$ are asymptotically nearby commuting observables as $N \to \infty$. We develop a method to construct nearby commuting matrices for normalized highly reducible representations of $su(2)$ whose multiplicities of irreducible subrepresentations exhibit a certain monotonically decreasing behavior. We then provide a constructive proof of Ogata's theorem for site dimension $d=2$ with explicit estimates for how close the nearby observables are. Moreover, motivated by the application to time-reversal symmetry explored in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1012.3494" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1012.3494">arXiv:1012.3494</a>, our construction has the property that real macroscopic observables are asymptotically nearby real commuting observables. This thesis also contains an introduction to the prerequisite matrix analysis for understanding the proof of the results gotten, a primer on the functional analysis of $C^\ast$-algebras frequently used in the literature of almost commuting operators, a detailed discussion of the history and main results in the problem of almost commuting matrices, a review of the basics of measurement of observables in finite dimensional quantum mechanical systems, and a discussion of the uncertainty principle for non-commuting bounded operators with some results obtained for observables with nearby commuting approximants.

Abstract:Let $G$ and $H$ be locally compact groups. We will show that each contractive Jordan isomorphism $\Phi\colon L^1(G)\to L^1(H)$ is either an isometric isomorphism or an isometric anti-isomorphism. We will apply this result to study isometric two-sided zero product preservers on group algebras and, further, to study local and approximately local isometric automorphisms of group algebras.

Abstract:The commutation principle proved by Ramírez, Seeger, and Sossa (SIAM J Optim 23:687-694, 2013) in the setting of Euclidean Jordan algebras says that for a Fréchet differentiable function $\Theta$ and a spectral function $F$, any local minimizer or maximizer $a$ of $\Theta+F$ over a spectral set $\mathcal{E}$ operator commutes with the gradient of $\Theta$ at $a$. In this paper, we improve this commutation principle by allowing $\Theta$ to be nonsmooth with mild regularity assumptions over it. For example, for the case of local minimizer, we show that $a$ operator commutes with some element of the limiting (Mordukhovich) subdifferential of $\Theta$ at $a$ provided that $\Theta$ is subdifferentially regular at $a$ satisfying a qualification condition. For the case of local maximizer, we prove that $a$ operator commutes with each element of the (Fenchel) subdifferential of $\Theta$ at $a$ whenever this subdifferential is nonempty. As an application, we characterize the local optimizers of shifted strictly convex spectral functions and norms over automorphism invariant sets.
