Abstract:We consider oriented bond or site percolation on ℤ d +. In the case of bond percolation we denote by P p the probability measure on configurations of open and closed bonds which makes all bonds of ℤ d + independent, and for which P p {e is open} = 1 −P p e {is closed} = p for each fixed edge e of ℤ d +. We take X(e) = 1 (0) if e is open (respectively, closed). We say that ρ-percolation occurs for some given 0 < ρ≤ 1, if there exists an oriented infinite path v0 = 0, v1, v2, …, starting at the origin, such that lim inf n →∞ (1/n) ∑ i=1 n X(e i ) ≥ρ, where e i is the edge {v i−1 , v i }. [MZ92] showed that there exists a critical probability p c = p c (ρ, d) = p c (ρ, d, bond) such that there is a.s. no ρ-percolation for p < p c and that P p {ρ-percolation occurs} > 0 for p > p c . Here we find lim d →∞d 1/ρ p c (ρd, bond) = D 1 , say. We also find the limit for the analogous quantity for site percolation, that is D2 = lim d →∞d1/ρp c (ρ, d, site). It turns out that for ρ < 1, D 1 < D 2 , and neither of these limits equals the analogous limit for the regular d-ary trees.
Existence of a percolation threshold on finite transitive graphs

Abstract:Let $(G_n)$ be a sequence of finite connected vertex-transitive graphs with volume tending to infinity. We say that a sequence of parameters $(p_n)$ is a percolation threshold if for every $\varepsilon > 0$, the proportion $\left\lVert K_1 \right\rVert$ of vertices contained in the largest cluster under bond percolation $\mathbb{P}_p^G$ satisfies both \[ \begin{split} \lim_{n \to \infty} \mathbb{P}_{(1+\varepsilon)p_n}^{G_n} \left( \left\lVert K_1 \right\rVert \geq \alpha \right) &= 1 \quad \text{for some $\alpha > 0$, and} \lim_{n \to \infty} \mathbb{P}_{(1-\varepsilon)p_n}^{G_n} \left( \left\lVert K_1 \right\rVert \geq \alpha \right) &= 0 \quad \text{for all $\alpha > 0$}. \end{split}\] We prove that $(G_n)$ has a percolation threshold if and only if $(G_n)$ does not contain a particular infinite collection of pathological subsequences of dense graphs. Our argument uses an adaptation of Vanneuville's new proof of the sharpness of the phase transition for infinite graphs via couplings [Van22] together with our recent work with Hutchcroft on the uniqueness of the giant cluster [EH21].

Abstract:It is known that many different types of finite random subgraph models undergo quantitatively similar phase transitions around their percolation thresholds, and the proofs of these results rely on isoperimetric properties of the underlying host graph. Recently, the authors showed that such a phase transition occurs in a large class of regular high-dimensional product graphs, generalising a classic result for the hypercube. In this paper we give new isoperimetric inequalities for such regular high-dimensional product graphs, which generalise the well-known isoperimetric inequality of Harper for the hypercube, and are asymptotically sharp for a wide range of set sizes. We then use these isoperimetric properties to investigate the structure of the giant component in supercritical percolation on these product graphs, that is, when , where d is the degree of the product graph and is a small enough constant. We show that typically has edge-expansion . Furthermore, we show that likely contains a linear-sized subgraph with vertex-expansion . These results are best possible up to the logarithmic factor in d . Using these likely expansion properties, we determine, up to small polylogarithmic factors in d , the likely diameter of as well as the typical mixing time of a lazy random walk on . Furthermore, we show the likely existence of a cycle of length . These results not only generalise, but also improve substantially upon the known bounds in the case of the hypercube, where in particular the likely diameter and typical mixing time of were previously only known to be polynomial in d .

Abstract:In this article, we study the critical percolation threshold $p_c$ for $d$-regular graphs. It is well-known that $p_c \geq \frac{1}{d-1}$ for such graphs, with equality holding for the $d$-regular tree. We prove that among all quasi-transitive $d$-regular graphs, the equality $p_c(G) = \frac{1}{d-1}$ holds if and only if $G$ is a tree. Furthermore, we provide counterexamples that illustrate the necessity of the quasi-transitive assumption.

Abstract:In this work, we study the random metric for the critical long-range percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. A recent work by Bäumler [3] implies the subsequential scaling limit, and our main contribution is to prove that the subsequential limit is uniquely characterized by a natural list of axioms. Our proof method is hugely inspired by recent works of Gwynne and Miller [42], and Ding and Gwynne [25] on the uniqueness of Liouville quantum gravity metrics.

Abstract:We extend Smirnov's proof of the existence and conformal invariance of the scaling limit of critical site-percolation on the triangular lattice to particular sequences of periodic graphs with more arbitrary large-scale structure, obtained by piecing together triangular regions of the triangular lattice. While not formally speaking a scaling limit statement (as the graphs are not rescaled versions of each other), the result is a weak form of universality for critical percolation.

Abstract:In this paper, by using the corrector method we give another proof of the quenched invariance principle for the random walk on the infinite random graph generated by a one-dimensional long-range percolation under the conditions that the connection probability p(1)=1 and the percolation exponent s>2. The key step of the proof is the construction of the corrector. We show that the corrector can be constructed under either s∈(2,3] or s>3, though the corresponding underlying measures may be different. As an application of the main result we get a new lower bound of the quenched diagonal transition probability for the random walk.

Abstract:We study level-set percolation for Gaussian free fields on metric graphs. In two dimensions, we give an upper bound on the chemical distance between the two boundaries of a macroscopic annulus. Our bound holds with high probability conditioned on connectivity and the bound is sharp up to a poly-logarithmic factor with an exponent of one-quarter. This substantially improves a previous result by Li and the first author. In three dimensions and higher, we provide rather sharp estimates of percolation probabilities in different regimes which altogether describe a sharp phase transition.

Abstract:We are interested in the clusters formed by a Poisson ensemble of Markovian loops on infinite graphs. This model was introduced and studied in [LeJ12] and [LL12]. It is a model with long range correlations with two parameters $\alpha$ and $\kappa$. The non-negative parameter $\alpha$ measures the amount of loops, and $\kappa$ plays the role of killing on vertices penalizing ($\kappa>0$) or favoring ($\kappa<0$) appearance of large loops. It was shown in [LL12] that for any fixed $\kappa$ and large enough $\alpha$, there exists an infinite cluster in the loop percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. In the present article, we show a non-trivial phase transition on the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ ($d\geq 3$) for $\kappa=0$. More precisely, we show that there is no loop percolation for $\kappa=0$ and $\alpha$ small enough. Interestingly, we observe a critical like behavior on the whole sub-critical domain of $\alpha$, namely, for $\kappa=0$ and any sub-critical value of $\alpha$, the probability of one-arm event decays at most polynomially. For $d\geq 5$, we prove that there exists a non-trivial threshold for the finiteness of the expected cluster size. For $\alpha$ below this threshold, we calculate, up to a constant factor, the decay of the probability of one-arm event, two point function, and the tail distribution of the cluster size. These rates are comparable with the ones obtained from a single large loop and only depend on the dimension. For $d=3$ or $4$, we give better lower bounds on the decay of the probability of one-arm event, which show importance of small loops for long connections. Abstract:We consider vertex percolation on pseudo-random $d-$regular graphs. The previous study by the second author established the existence of phase transition from small components to a linear (in $\frac{n}{d}$) sized component, at $p=\frac{1}{d}$. In the supercritical regime, our main result recovers the sharp asymptotic of the size of the largest component, and shows that all other components are typically much smaller. Furthermore, we consider other typical properties of the largest component such as the number of edges, existence of a long cycle and expansion. In the subcritical regime, we strengthen the upper bound on the likely component size.

Percolation on High-dimensional Product Graphs

Abstract:We consider percolation on high-dimensional product graphs, where the base graphs are regular and of bounded order. In the subcritical regime, we show that typically the largest component is of order logarithmic in the number of vertices. In the supercritical regime, our main result recovers the sharp asymptotic of the order of the largest component, and shows that all the other components are typically of order logarithmic in the number of vertices. In particular, we show that this phase transition is quantitatively similar to the one of the binomial random graph. This generalises the results of Ajtai, Komlós, and Szemerédi and of Bollobás, Kohayakawa, and Łuczak who showed that the $d$-dimensional hypercube, which is the $d$-fold Cartesian product of an edge, undergoes a phase transition quantitatively similar to the one of the binomial random graph.

Sharpness and locality for percolation on finite transitive graphs

Abstract:Let $(G_n) = \left((V_n,E_n)\right)$ be a sequence of finite connected vertex-transitive graphs with uniformly bounded vertex degrees such that $\lvert V_n \rvert \to \infty$ as $n \to \infty$. We say that percolation on $G_n$ has a sharp phase transition (as $n \to \infty$) if, as the percolation parameter crosses some critical point, the number of vertices contained in the largest percolation cluster jumps from logarithmic to linear order with high probability. We prove that percolation on $G_n$ has a sharp phase transition unless, after passing to a subsequence, the rescaled graph-metric on $G_n$ (rapidly) converges to the unit circle with respect to the Gromov-Hausdorff metric. We deduce that under the same hypothesis, the critical point for the emergence of a giant (i.e. linear-sized) cluster in $G_n$ coincides with the critical point for the emergence of an infinite cluster in the Benjamini-Schramm limit of $(G_n)$, when this limit exists.

Abstract:We study the connected components in critical percolation on the Hamming hypercube $\{0,1\}^m$. We show that their sizes rescaled by $2^{-2m/3}$ converge in distribution, and that, considered as metric measure spaces with the graph distance rescaled by $2^{-m/3}$ and the uniform measure, they converge in distribution with respect to the Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov topology. The two corresponding limits are as in critical Erdős-Rényi graphs.

Abstract:We provide a sufficient condition on the isoperimetric properties of a regular graph $G$ of growing degree $d$, under which the random subgraph $G_p$ typically undergoes a phase transition around $p=\frac{1}{d}$ which resembles the emergence of a giant component in the binomial random graph model $G(n,p)$. We further show that this condition is tight. More precisely, let $d=\omega(1)$, let $\epsilon>0$ be a small enough constant, and let $p \cdot d=1+\epsilon$. We show that if $C$ is sufficiently large and $G$ is a $d$-regular $n$-vertex graph where every subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ of order at most $\frac{n}{2}$ has edge-boundary of size at least $C|S|$, then $G_p$ typically has a unique linear sized component, whose order is asymptotically $y(\epsilon)n$, where $y(\epsilon)$ is the survival probability of a Galton-Watson tree with offspring distribution Po$(1+\epsilon)$. We further give examples to show that this result is tight both in terms of its dependence on $C$, and with respect to the order of the second-largest component. We also consider a more general setting, where we only control the expansion of sets up to size $k$. In this case, we show that if $G$ is such that every subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ of order at most $k$ has edge-boundary of size at least $d|S|$ and $p$ is such that $p\cdot d \geq 1 + \epsilon$, then $G_p$ typically contains a component of order $\Omega(k)$.

Abstract:We study bond percolation in two dimensions between random site variables having one out of q colors, using transfer-matrix and Monte Carlo techniques. We determine the percolation threshold as a function of the Potts temperature T in the disordered Potts range T-c<= T 2 it appears to suppress it. Remarkably, for q=2 the percolation line coincides with the only flow line extending to T>T-c from the critical fixed point associated with Potts clusters.

Abstract:We study a percolation problem based on critical loop configurations of the O(n) loop model on the honeycomb lattice. We define dual clusters as groups of sites on the dual triangular lattice that are not separated by a loop, and investigate the bond-percolation properties of these dual clusters. The universal properties at the percolation threshold are argued to match those of Kasteleyn-Fortuin random clusters in the critical Potts model. This relation is checked numerically by means of cluster simulations of several O(n) models in the range 1 <= n <= 2. The simulation results include the percolation threshold for several values of n, as well as the universal exponents associated with bond dilution and the size distribution of the diluted clusters at the percolation threshold. Our numerical results for the exponents are in agreement with existing Coulomb-gas results for the random-cluster model, which confirms the relation between both models. We discuss the renormalization flow of the bond-dilution parameter p as a function of n, and provide an expression that accurately describes a line of unstable fixed points as a function of n, corresponding with the percolation threshold. Furthermore, the renormalization scenario indicates the existence, in a p versus n diagram, of another line of fixed points at p = 1, which is stable with respect to p.
Universality of random-site percolation thresholds for two-dimensional complex non-compact neighborhoods

Abstract:The phenomenon of percolation is one of the core topics in statistical mechanics. It allows one to study the phase transition known in real physical systems only in a purely geometrical way. In this paper, we determine thresholds $p_c$ for random site percolation in triangular and honeycomb lattices for all available neighborhoods containing sites from the sixth coordination zone. The results obtained (together with the percolation thresholds gathered from the literature also for other complex neighborhoods and also for a square lattice) show the power-law dependence $p_c\propto(\zeta/K)^{-\gamma}$ with $\gamma=0.526(11)$, $0.5439(63)$ and $0.5932(47)$, for honeycomb, square, and triangular lattice, respectively, and $p_c\propto\zeta^{-\gamma}$ with $\gamma=0.5546(67)$ independently on the underlying lattice. The index $\zeta=\sum_i z_i r_i$ stands for an average coordination number weighted by distance, that is, depending on the coordination zone number $i$, the neighborhood coordination number $z_i$ and the distance $r_i$ to sites in $i$-th coordination zone from the central site. The number $K$ indicates lattice connectivity, that is, $K=3$, 4 and 6 for the honeycomb, square and triangular lattice, respectively.

Abstract:We study the critical behavior for percolation on inhomogeneous random networks on $n$ vertices, where the weights of the vertices follow a power-law distribution with exponent $\tau \in (2,3)$. Such networks, often referred to as scale-free networks, exhibit critical behavior when the percolation probability tends to zero at an appropriate rate, as $n\to\infty$. We identify the critical window for a host of scale-free random graph models such as the Norros-Reittu model, Chung-Lu model and generalized random graphs. Surprisingly, there exists a finite time inside the critical window, after which, we see a sudden emergence of a tiny giant component. This is a novel behavior which is in contrast with the critical behavior in other known universality classes with $\tau \in (3,4)$ and $\tau >4$. Precisely, for edge-retention probabilities $\pi_n = \lambda n^{-(3-\tau)/2}$, there is an explicitly computable $\lambda_c>0$ such that the critical window is of the form $\lambda \in (0,\lambda_c),$ where the largest clusters have size of order $n^{\beta}$ with $\beta=(\tau^2-4\tau+5)/[2(\tau-1)]\in[\sqrt{2}-1, \tfrac{1}{2})$ and have non-degenerate scaling limits, while in the supercritical regime $\lambda > \lambda_c$, a unique `tiny giant' component of size $\sqrt{n}$ emerges. For $\lambda \in (0,\lambda_c),$ the scaling limit of the maximum component sizes can be described in terms of components of a one-dimensional inhomogeneous percolation model on $\mathbb{Z}_+$ studied in a seminal work by Durrett and Kesten. For $\lambda>\lambda_c$, we prove that the sudden emergence of the tiny giant is caused by a phase transition inside a smaller core of vertices of weight $\Omega(\sqrt{n})$.
Scaling limits and universality: Critical percolation on weighted graphs converging to an $L^3$ graphon

Abstract:We develop a general universality technique for establishing metric scaling limits of critical random discrete structures exhibiting mean-field behavior that requires four ingredients: (i) from the barely subcritical regime to the critical window, components merge approximately like the multiplicative coalescent, (ii) asymptotics of the susceptibility functions are the same as that of the Erdos-Renyi random graph, (iii) asymptotic negligibility of the maximal component size and the diameter in the barely subcritical regime, and (iv) macroscopic averaging of distances between vertices in the barely subcritical regime. As an application of the general universality theorem, we establish, under some regularity conditions, the critical percolation scaling limit of graphs that converge, in a suitable topology, to an $L^3$ graphon. In particular, we define a notion of the critical window in this setting. The $L^3$ assumption ensures that the model is in the Erdos-Renyi universality class and that the scaling limit is Brownian. Our results do not assume any specific functional form for the graphon. As a consequence of our results on graphons, we obtain the metric scaling limit for Aldous-Pittel's RGIV model [9] inside the critical window. Our universality principle has applications in a number of other problems including in the study of noise sensitivity of critical random graphs [52]. In [10], we use our universality theorem to establish the metric scaling limit of critical bounded size rules. Our method should yield the critical metric scaling limit of Rucinski and Wormald's random graph process with degree restrictions [56] provided an additional technical condition about the barely subcritical behavior of this model can be proved.
