Abstract:Amorphous silica ($a-SiO_2$) is a widely used inorganic material. Interestingly, the relationship between the local atomic structures of $a-SiO_2$ and their effects on ductility and fracture is seldom explored. Here, we combine large-scale molecular dynamics simulations and machine learning methods to examine the molecular deformations and fracture mechanisms of $a-SiO_2$. By quenching at high pressures, we demonstrate that densifying $a-SiO_2$ increases the ductility and toughness. Through theoretical analysis and simulation results, we find that changes in local bonding topologies greatly facilitate energy dissipation during plastic deformation, particularly if the coordination numbers decrease. The appearance of fracture can then be accurately located based on the spatial distribution of the atoms. We further observe that the static unstrained structure encodes the propensity for local atomic coordination to change during applied strain, hence a distinct connection can be made between the initial atomic configurations before loading and the final far-from-equilibrium atomic configurations upon fracture. These results are essential for understanding how atomic arrangements strongly influence the mechanical properties and structural features in amorphous solids and will be useful in atomistic design of functional materials.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the Paper Attempts to Solve The paper primarily attempts to address the following two core issues: 1. **Study the deformation and fracture mechanisms of amorphous silica (a-SiO₂) at the nanoscale**: - Investigate the deformation and fracture behavior of a-SiO₂ samples under uniaxial tension through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations after quenching under different pressures. - Explore the impact of different pressure quenching treatments on the mechanical properties of a-SiO₂ samples, particularly in terms of plastic transformation. 2. **Predict the fracture tendency of amorphous silica (a-SiO₂)**: - Predict fracture tendency based on the initial atomic configuration, i.e., establish a mapping relationship between the initial static structure and the future structural state after fracture. - Use machine learning methods to build classification models to predict bond-switching activities given an initial structure and understand the atomic origins of fracture tendencies through these activities. ### Main Findings - **Impact of pressure quenching on mechanical properties**: - As the quenching pressure increases (from 0 to 5 GPa), a-SiO₂ samples exhibit a transition from brittleness to plasticity. - Samples quenched at higher pressures show higher maximum strain before fracture but lower maximum stress. - Although samples quenched at high pressure have lower strength, their enhanced plasticity leads to higher toughness. - **Relationship between bond-switching activities and fracture**: - Bond-switching activities (especially the reduction in coordination number) play a crucial role in the fracture process. - High strain regions highly coincide with atoms experiencing a decrease in coordination number (DCN), which can be used to predict fracture locations. - **Application of machine learning models**: - Classification models based on radial structure function (RSF) and angular structure function (ASF) were constructed to predict changes in coordination number during fracture. - The models demonstrated high accuracy under different pressure quenching conditions, with a maximum accuracy of 92.57%. Through these studies, the paper reveals the deformation and fracture mechanisms of amorphous silica materials and provides a theoretical foundation for designing high-performance functional materials.
