Abstract:The set of strata of a reductive group can be viewed as an enlargement of the set of unipotent classes. In this paper the notion of distinguished unipotent class is extended to this larger set. The strata of a Weyl group are introduced and studied.

Abstract:We show how to attach to any stratum of a reductive group a (small) finite group. We also show that in the simply laced case the set of strata is in bijection with a subset of the set of almost special representations of the Weyl group. Abstract:Let H be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field. We define a surjective map from the set CS(H) of unipotent character sheaves on H (up to isomorphism) to the set of strata of H. To do this we use the generalized Springer correspondence. We also give a new parametrization of CS(H) in terms of data coming from bad characteristic. Some minor errors corrected.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the class of rigid monomial ideals. We give a characterization of the minimal free resolutions of certain classes of these ideals. Specifically, we show that the ideals in a particular subclass of rigid monomial ideals are lattice-linear and thus their minimal resolution can be constructed as a poset resolution. We then use this result to give a description of the minimal free resolution of a larger class of rigid monomial ideals by using $\mathcal{L}(n)$, the lattice of all lcm-lattices of monomial ideals with $n$ generators. By fixing a stratum in $\mathcal{L}(n)$ where all ideals have the same total Betti numbers we show that rigidity is a property which is upward closed in $\mathcal{L}(n)$. Furthermore, the minimal resolution of all rigid ideals contained in a fixed stratum is shown to be isomorphic to the constructed minimal resolution.

Abstract:For a complex reductive group G acting linearly on a complex affine space V with respect to a character, we show two stratifications of V associated to this action (and a choice of invariant inner product on the Lie algebra of the maximal compact subgroup of G) coincide. The first is Hesselink's stratification by adapted 1-parameter subgroups and the second is the Morse theoretic stratification associated to the norm square of the moment map. We also give a proof of a version of the Kempf-Ness theorem which states that the GIT quotient is homeomorphic to the symplectic reduction (both taken with respect to the character). Finally, for the space of representations of a quiver of fixed dimension, we show that the Morse theoretic stratification and Hesselink's stratification coincide with the stratification by Harder-Narasimhan types.

Extension of relative rigid homomorphisms from the formal multiplicative group

Abstract:A theorem of Lütkebohmert states that a rigid group homomorphism from the formal multiplicative group to a smooth commutative rigid group $G$, with relatively compact image, can be extended to a homomorphism from the rigid multiplicative group to $G$. In this paper, we prove a relative version of this theorem over a geometrically reduced quasi-compact quasi-separated rigid space. The relative theorem is proved under an additional hypothesis that some open relative subgroup of $G$ has good reduction. This theorem is useful for studying rigid uniformisation of abelian or semiabelian varieties in a relative setting.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the notion of $L^2$-subgroup rigid groups and demonstrate that free groups are $L^2$-subgroup rigid. As a consequence, we establish the equivalence between compressibility, inertness, strong inertness, and $L^2$-independence for a finitely generated subgroup of a free group, confirming a conjecture by Dicks and Ventura as well as the one by Antolin and Jaikin-Zapirain.

Abstract:In this paper, we study rationality properties of reductive group actions which are defined over an arbitrary field of characteristic zero. Thereby, we unify Luna's theory of spherical systems and Borel-Tits' theory of reductive groups. In particular, we define for any reductive group action a generalized Tits index whose main constituents are a root system and a generalization of the anisotropic kernel. The index controls to a large extent the behavior at infinity (i.e., embeddings). For k-spherical varieties (i.e., where a minimal parabolic has an open orbit) we obtain explicit (wonderful) completions of the set of rational points. For local fields this means honest compactifications generalizing the maximal Satake compactification of a symmetric space. Our main tool is a k-version of the local structure theorem.

Abstract:We prove a rigidity theorem for morphisms from products of open subschemes of the projective line into solvable groups not containing a copy of $\Ga$ (for example, wound unipotent groups). As a consequence, we deduce several structural results about unirational group schemes, including that unirationality for group schemes descends through separable extensions. We also apply the main result to prove that permawound unipotent groups are unirational and -- when wound -- commutative.

Abstract:We construct families of non-trivial universal rigid secondary classes for foliations, and then discuss their application to prove that foliations are not homotopic. An observation of Lawson about the non-triviality of the normal Pontrjagin classes of foliations is extended, and then used to construct new families of examples of foliations with non-trivial rigid secondary classes. Examples are given of (abstractly constructed) foliations of compact manifolds with homotopic tangent bundles, but which are not homotopic as foliations.

Sublinear Rigidity of Lattices in Semisimple Lie Groups

Abstract:Let $G$ be a real centre-free semisimple Lie group without compact factors. I prove that irreducible lattices in $G$ are rigid under two types of sublinear distortions. The first result is that the class of lattices in groups that do not admit $\mathbb{R}$-rank $1$ factors is $\textit{SBE complete}$: if $\Lambda$ is an abstract finitely generated group that is Sublinearly BiLipschitz Equivalent (SBE) to a lattice $\Gamma\leq G$, then $\Lambda$ can be homomorphically mapped into $G$ with finite kernel and image a lattice in $G$. For such $G$ this generalizes the well known quasi-isometric completeness of lattices. The second result concerns sublinear distortions within $G$ itself, and holds without any restriction on the rank of the factors: if $\Lambda\leq G$ is a discrete subgroup that $\textit{sublinearly covers}$ a lattice $\Gamma\leq G$, then $\Lambda$ is itself a lattice.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple simply-connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ with $\mathfrak{g}={\rm Lie}(G)$. We discuss various properties of nilpotent orbits in $\mathfrak{g}$, which have previously only been considered over $\mathbb{C}$. Using a combination of theoretical and computational methods, we extend to positive characteristic various calculations of de Graaf with nilpotent orbits in exceptional Lie algebras. In particular, we classify those orbits which are reachable, those which satisfy a certain related condition due to Panyushev, and determine the codimension in the centraliser $\mathfrak{g}_e$ of its the derived subalgebra $[\mathfrak{g}_e,\mathfrak{g}_e]$. Some of these calculations are used to show that the list of rigid nilpotent orbits in $\mathfrak{g}$, the classification of sheets of $\mathfrak{g}$ and the distribution of the nilpotent orbits amongst them are independent of good characteristic, remaining the same as in the characteristic zero case. We also give a comprehensive account of the theory of sheets in reductive Lie algebras over algebraically closed fields of good characteristic.

Abstract:For a profinite group $G$ and a rigid analytic space $X$, we study when an $\mathcal O_X(X)$-linear representation $V$ of $G$ admits a lattice, i.e. an $\mathcal O_{\mathcal X}(\mathcal X)$-linear model for a suitable formal model $\mathcal X$ of $X$ in the sense of Berthelot. We give a positive answer, under mild assumptions, when $X$ is a ``wide open'' space. As a consequence, we are able to describe explicit open rational subdomains of $X$ over which $V$ is constant after reduction modulo a power of $p$. We give applications in two different directions. First, we prove explicit results on the reduction modulo powers of $p$ of sheaves of crystalline and semistable representations of fixed weight. Second, we focus on the sheaves of Galois representations on eigenvarieties, which are important examples of wide open spaces thanks to a result of Bellaïche and Chenevier. We give an application of our main results to the pseudorepresentation carried by the Coleman--Mazur eigencurve, which can be made explicit whenever equations for a rational subdomain of the eigencurve are given.

Geometric rigidity of simple modules for algebraic groups

Abstract:Let k be a field, let G be a smooth affine k-group and V a finite-dimensional G-module. We say V is \emph{rigid} if the socle series and radical series coincide for the action of G on each indecomposable summand of V; say V is \emph{geometrically rigid} (resp.~\emph{absolutely rigid}) if V is rigid after base change of G and V to \bar k (resp.~any field extension of k). We show that all simple G-modules are geometrically rigid, though not in general absolutely rigid. More precisley, we show that if V is a simple G-module, then there is a finite purely inseparable extension k_V/k naturally attached to V such that V_{k_V} is absolutely rigid as a G_{k_V}-module. The proof for connected G turns on an investigation of algebras of the form K\otimes_k E where K and E are field extensions of k; we give an example of such an algebra which is not rigid as a module over itself. We establish the existence of the purely inseparable field extension k_V/k through an analogous version for artinian algebras. In the second half of the paper we apply recent results on the structure and representation theory of pseudo-reductive groups to gives a concrete description of k_V. Namely, we combine the main structure theorem of the Conrad--Prasad classification of pseudo-reductive G together with our previous high weight theory. For V a simple G-module, we calculate the minimal field of definition of the geometric Jacobson radical of \End_G(V) in terms of the high weight of V and the Conrad--Prasad classification data; this gives a concrete construction of the field k_V as a subextension of the minimal field of definition of the geometric unipotent radical of G. We also observe that the Conrad--Prasad classification can be used to hone the dimension formula for G we had previously established; we also use it to give a description of \End_G(V) which includes a dimension formula.

Abstract:A Schubert class is called rigid if it can only be represented by Schubert varieties. The rigid Schubert classes have been classified in Grassmannians and orthogonal Grassmannians. In this paper, we study the rigidity problem in partial flag varieties (type A) and orthogonal partial flag varieties (type B and type D). In particular, we give numerical conditions that ensure a Schubert class is rigid.

Abstract:We generalize the concept of rigid inner forms, defined by Kaletha in [Kal16], to the setting of a local function field $F$ in order state the local Langlands conjectures for arbitrary connected reductive groups over $F$. To do this, we define for a connected reductive group $G$ over $F$ a new cohomology set $H^{1}(\mathcal{E}, Z \to G) \subset H_{\text{fpqc}}^{1}(\mathcal{E}, G)$ for a gerbe $\mathcal{E}$ attached to a class in $H_{\text{fppf}}^{2}(F, u)$ for a certain canonically-defined profinite commutative group scheme $u$, building up to an analogue of the classical Tate-Nakayama duality theorem. We define a relative transfer factor for an endoscopic datum serving a connected reductive group $G$ over $F$, and use rigid inner forms to extend this to an absolute transfer factor, enabling the statement of endoscopic conjectures relating stable virtual characters and $\dot{s}$-stable virtual characters for a semisimple $\dot{s}$ associated to a tempered Langlands parameter.

Abstract:We study rigidity properties of linearly ordered sets (chains) under automorphisms, order-embeddings, epimorphisms, and endomorphisms. We focus on two main cases, dense subchains of the real numbers, and uncountable dense chains of higher (regular) cardinalities. Abstract:We introduce a natural stratification of the space of projective classes of measured laminations on a complete hyperbolic surface of finite area. We prove a rigidity result, namely, the group of self-homeomorphisms of the space of projective measured laminations that preserve such a stratification is in general identified with the extended mapping class group of the corresponding surface. We use this approach to fill a gap in the proof of the rigidity of the action of the extended mapping class group on the unmeasured laminations space.

We prove a Rigid theorem on locally compact TSI Polish groups admitting open identity component, as follows: Let $G$ be a locally compact TSI Polish group such that $G_0$ is open in $G$, and let $H$ be a nontrivial pro-Lie TSI Polish group. Then $E(G)\leq_BE(H)$ iff there exists a continuous homomorphism $\phi:G_0\to H_0$ satisfying the following conditions: (i) $\ker(\phi)$ is non-archimedean; (ii) $\phi{\rm Inn}_G(G_0)\subseteq\overline{{\rm Inn}_H(H_0)\phi}$ under pointwise convergence topology. An application of the Rigid theorem yields a negative answer to Question 7.5 of [2].
