Abstract:A theory of Poincaré series is developed for Lobachevsky space of arbitrary dimension. For a general non-uniform lattice a Selberg-Kloosterman zeta function is introduced. It has meromorphic continuation to the plane with poles at the corresponding automorphic spectrum. When the lattice is a unit group of a rational quadratic form, the Selberg-Kloosterman zeta function is computed explicitly in terms of exponential sums. In this way a non-trivial Ramanujan-like bound analogous to “Selberg’s 3/16 bound” is proved in general.

Abstract:We study the counting function of Steklov eigenvalues on compact manifolds with boundary and obtain its upper bound involving the leading term of Weyl's law. Our estimate can be viewed as a weakened version of Pólya's Conjecture in the Steklov case on general manifolds. As a byproduct, we also obtain a description about the decay behavior of Steklov eigenfunctions near the boundary.

Abstract:We investigate the spectral properties of the Steklov problem for the modified Helmholtz equation $(p-\Delta) u = 0$ in the exterior of a compact set, for which the positive parameter $p$ ensures exponential decay of the Steklov eigenfunctions at infinity. We obtain the small-$p$ asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions and discuss their features for different space dimensions. These results find immediate applications to the theory of stochastic processes and unveil the long-time asymptotic behavior of probability densities of various first-passage times in exterior domains. Theoretical results are validated by solving the exterior Steklov problem by a finite-element method with a transparent boundary condition.

Geometric bounds for low Steklov eigenvalues of finite volume hyperbolic surfaces

Abstract:We obtain geometric lower bounds for the low Steklov eigenvalues of finite-volume hyperbolic surfaces with geodesic boundary. The bounds we obtain depend on the length of a shortest multi-geodesic disconnecting the surfaces into connected components each containing a boundary component and the rate of dependency on it is sharp. Our result also identifies situations when the bound is independent of the length of this multi-geodesic. The bounds also hold when the Gaussian curvature is bounded between two negative constants and can be viewed as a counterpart of the well-known Schoen-Wolpert-Yau inequality for Laplace eigenvalues. The proof is based on analysing the behaviour of the {corresponding Steklov} eigenfunction on an adapted version of thick-thin decomposition for hyperbolic surfaces with geodesic boundary. Our results extend and improve the previously known result in the compact case obtained by a different method.

Abstract:We consider the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians on a bounded domain with Lipschitz boundary and prove two-term asymptotics for their Riesz means of arbitrary positive order. Moreover, when the underlying domain is convex, we obtain universal, non-asymptotic bounds that correctly reproduce the two leading terms in the asymptotics and depend on the domain only through simple geometric characteristics. An important ingredient in the proof of the latter result is a pointwise bound for the heat kernel of the Neumann Laplacian in a convex domain with universal constants. Additional ingredients in our proof are non-asymptotic versions of various Tauberian theorems.

Metric upper bounds for Steklov and Laplace eigenvalues

Abstract:We prove two upper bounds for the Steklov eigenvalues of a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. The first involves the volume of the manifold and of its boundary, as well as packing and volume growth constants of the boundary and its distortion. Its proof is based on a metric-measure space technique that was introduced by Colbois and Maerten. The second bound is in terms of the extrinsic diameter of the boundary and its injectivity radius. It is obtained from a concentration inequality, akin to Gromov-Milman concentration for closed manifolds. By applying these bounds to cylinders over closed manifold, we obtain bounds for eigenvalues of the Laplace operator, in the spirit of Grigor'yan-Netrusov-Yau and of Berger-Croke. For a family of manifolds that has uniformly bounded volume and boundary of fixed intrinsic geometry, we deduce that a large first nonzero Steklov eigenvalue implies that each boundary component is contained in a ball of small extrinsic radius.

Abstract:Abstract We associate a sequence of variational eigenvalues to any Radon measure on a compact Riemannian manifold. For particular choices of measures, we recover the Laplace, Steklov and other classical eigenvalue problems. In the first part of the paper we study the properties of variational eigenvalues and establish a general continuity result, which shows for a sequence of measures converging in the dual of an appropriate Sobolev space, that the associated eigenvalues converge as well. The second part of the paper is devoted to various applications to shape optimization. The main theme is studying sharp isoperimetric inequalities for Steklov eigenvalues without any assumption on the number of connected components of the boundary. In particular, we solve the isoperimetric problem for each Steklov eigenvalue of planar domains: the best upper bound for the k -th perimeter-normalized Steklov eigenvalue is $$8\pi k$$ 8 π k , which is the best upper bound for the $$k^{\text {th}}$$ k th area-normalised eigenvalue of the Laplacian on the sphere. The proof involves realizing a weighted Neumann problem as a limit of Steklov problems on perforated domains. For $$k=1$$ k = 1 , the number of connected boundary components of a maximizing sequence must tend to infinity, and we provide a quantitative lower bound on the number of connected components. A surprising consequence of our analysis is that any maximizing sequence of planar domains with fixed perimeter must collapse to a point.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the generalized Steklov problem for the modified Helmholtz equation and focus on the relation between its spectrum and the geometric structure of the domain. We address three distinct aspects: (i) the asymptotic behavior of eigenvalues for polygonal domains; (ii) the dependence of the integrals of eigenfunctions on domain symmetries; and (iii) the localization and exponential decay of Steklov eigenfunctions away from the boundary for smooth shapes and in the presence of corners. For this purpose, we implemented two complementary numerical methods to compute the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the associated Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator for planar bounded domains. We also discuss applications of the obtained results in the theory of diffusion-controlled reactions and formulate conjectures with relevance in spectral geometry.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic growth of the eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on singular Riemannian manifolds, where all geometrical invariants appearing in classical spectral asymptotics are unbounded, and the total volume can be infinite. Under suitable assumptions on the curvature blow-up, we show how the singularity influences the Weyl's asymptotics. Our main motivation comes from the construction of singular Riemannian metrics with prescribed non-classical Weyl's law. Namely, for any non-decreasing slowly varying function $\upsilon$ we construct a singular Riemannian structure whose spectrum is discrete and satisfies \[ N(\lambda) \sim \frac{\omega_n}{(2\pi)^n} \lambda^{n/2} \upsilon(\lambda). \] Examples of slowly varying functions are $\log\lambda$, its iterations $\log_k \lambda = \log_{k-1}\log\lambda$, any rational function with positive coefficients of $\log_k \lambda$, and functions with non-lo\-ga\-rithmic growth such as $\exp\left((\log \lambda)^{\alpha_1} \dots (\log_k \lambda)^{\alpha_k} \right)$ for $\alpha_i \in (0,1)$. A key tool in our arguments is a new quantitative estimate for the remainder of the heat trace and the Weyl's function on Riemannian manifolds, which is of independent interest.

Abstract:We prove a sharp upper bound and a lower bound for the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Wentzell-Laplace operator on compact manifolds with boundary and an isoperimetric inequality for the same eigenvalue in the case where the manifold is a bounded domain in a Euclidean space. We study some fourth order Stekolv problems and obtain isoperimetric upper bound for the first eigenvalue of them. We also find all the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for two kind of fourth order Stekolv problems on a Euclidean ball.

Computing eigenvalues of the Laplacian on rough domains

Abstract:We prove a general Mosco convergence theorem for bounded Euclidean domains satisfying a set of mild geometric hypotheses. For bounded domains, this notion implies norm-resolvent convergence for the Dirichlet Laplacian which in turn ensures spectral convergence. A key element of the proof is the development of a novel, explicit Poincaré-type inequality. These results allow us to construct a universal algorithm capable of computing the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian on a wide class of rough domains. Many domains with fractal boundaries, such as the Koch snowflake and certain filled Julia sets, are included among this class. Conversely, we construct a counter example showing that there does not exist a universal algorithm of the same type capable of computing the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian on an arbitrary bounded domain.

Abstract:We consider the Steklov problem on differential $p$-forms defined by M. Karpukhin and present geometric eigenvalue bounds in the setting of warped product manifolds in various scenarios. In particular, we obtain Escobar type lower bounds for warped product manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature and strictly convex boundary, and certain sharp bounds for hypersurfaces of revolution, among others. We compare and contrast the behaviour with known results in the case of functions (i.e., $0$-forms), highlighting the influence of the underlying topology on the spectrum for $p$-forms in general.

Abstract:This article investigates a spectral problem of the Laplace operator in a two-dimensional bounded domain perforated by a small arbitrary star-shaped hole and on the smooth boundary of which the Neumann boundary condition is imposed. It is proved that the eigenvalues of this problem converge to the eigenvalues of the Laplacian defined on the unperturbed domain as the size of the hole approaches zero. Furthermore, our main theorem provides the rate of convergence by showing an asymptotic expansion for all simple eigenvalues with respect to the size and shape of the hole.

Abstract:We consider Steklov eigenvalues of nearly hyperspherical domains in $\mathbb{R}^{d + 1}$ with $d\ge 3$. In previous work, treating such domains as perturbations of the ball, we proved that the Steklov eigenvalues are analytic functions of the domain perturbation parameter. Here, we compute the first-order term of the asymptotic expansion and show that the first-order perturbations are eigenvalues of a Hermitian matrix, whose entries can be written explicitly in terms of the Pochhammer's and Wigner $3j$-symbols. We analyse the asymptotic expansion and show the following isoperimetric results among domains with fixed volume: (1) for an infinite subset of Steklov eigenvalues, the ball is not optimal, and (2) for a different infinite subset of Steklov eigenvalues, the ball is a stationary point.

In particular, when the domain is convex, our result gives an affirmative answer to Open Question 4.27 in [7] for the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^n$ when $n \geq 4$.

Abstract:We study the eigenvalues of Hodge--Laplace operators over bounded convex domains. Generalizing contributions by Guerini and Savo, we show that the Poincaré--Friedrichs constants of the Sobolev de~Rham complexes increase with the degree of the forms. We establish that the spectra of Hodge--Laplace operators converge when the domain is approximated by a sequence of convex domains up to a bi-Lipschitz deformation of the boundary. As preparatory work with independent relevance, we study the gauge function and the reciprocal radial function of convex sets, providing new proofs for Lipschitz estimates by Vrećica and Toranzos for the reciprocal radial function and improving a Lipschitz estimate for the gauge function due to Beer.
