Abstract:This article investigates a spectral problem of the Laplace operator in a two-dimensional bounded domain perforated by a small arbitrary star-shaped hole and on the smooth boundary of which the Neumann boundary condition is imposed. It is proved that the eigenvalues of this problem converge to the eigenvalues of the Laplacian defined on the unperturbed domain as the size of the hole approaches zero. Furthermore, our main theorem provides the rate of convergence by showing an asymptotic expansion for all simple eigenvalues with respect to the size and shape of the hole.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the spectral problem of the Laplace operator under Neumann boundary conditions in a two - dimensional bounded domain with small star - shaped holes. Specifically, the paper focuses on how the eigenvalues converge to the eigenvalues of the Laplace operator in the domain without holes as the size of the holes approaches zero, and provides the asymptotic expansions of all simple eigenvalues with respect to the size and shape of the holes.
### Main contributions of the paper
1. **Asymptotic expansion**: The paper constructs the asymptotic expansions of all simple eigenvalues with respect to the size of the holes. This expansion takes into account not only the size of the holes but also the influence of the shape of the holes on the eigenvalues.
2. **Technical methods**: The author uses asymptotic techniques and perturbation methods to analyze the problem. In particular, by introducing curvature coordinates and using the concept of Green's kernel to approximate eigenvalues and eigenfunctions.
3. **Application of Green's function**: By constructing the Green operator related to the Laplace equation, the author derives the approximate expressions of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions with Neumann boundary conditions.
### Specific problem description
The paper studies a two - dimensional bounded domain \(\Omega\) which is penetrated by a small star - shaped hole \(E_\epsilon\) with a smooth boundary. Neumann boundary conditions are imposed on the boundary of the hole, and Dirichlet boundary conditions are imposed on the outer boundary. The main problem studied can be represented as:
\[
\begin{cases}
-\Delta u(x)=\lambda(\epsilon) u(x), & x\in\Omega\setminus\overline{E_\epsilon}, \\
u(x) = 0, & x\in\partial\Omega, \\
\frac{\partial u}{\partial\nu}(x)=0, & x\in\partial E_\epsilon.
\end{cases}
\]
### Main results
The main result of the paper is Theorem 2.1, which shows that for a simple eigenvalue \(\mu_i\), when \(\epsilon\) approaches zero:
\[
\mu_i(\epsilon)=\mu_i-(2|\nabla\phi_i(\tilde{w})|^2-\mu_i\phi_i(\tilde{w})^2)|E|\epsilon^2 + O(\epsilon^3|\log\epsilon|^2),
\]
where \(\mu_i\) is the corresponding eigenvalue of the unperturbed problem, \(\tilde{w}\) is the origin, and \(|E|\) is the area of the hole \(E\).
### Significance
This result extends the eigenvalue perturbation analysis to two - dimensional domains and provides a new asymptotic expansion. Different from the three - dimensional case, in the two - dimensional case, the leading term of the eigenvalue varies with \(\epsilon^2\), and the higher - order term is \(O(\epsilon^3|\log\epsilon|^2)\), which highlights the differences in eigenvalue perturbation behaviors in different dimensions and emphasizes the importance of dimension in asymptotic analysis.
