Abstract:Given two automorphisms of a group $G$, one is interested in knowing whether they are conjugate in the automorphism group of $G$, or in the abstract commensurator of $G$, and how these two properties may differ. When $G$ is the fundamental group of a closed orientable surface, we present a uniform finiteness theorem for the class of pseudo-Anosov automorphisms. We present an explicit example of a commensurably conjugate pair of pseudo-Anosov automorphisms of a genus $3$ surface, that are not conjugate in the Mapping Class Group, and we also show that infinitely many independent automorphisms of hyperbolic orbifolds have class number equal to one. In the appendix, we briefly survey the Latimer-MacDuffee theorem that addresses the case of automorphisms of $\mathbb{Z}^n$, with a point of view that is suited to an analogy with surface group automorphisms.

On generating mapping class groups by pseudo-Anosov elements

Abstract:Wajnryb proved that the mapping class group of a closed oriented surface is generated by two elements. We proved that the mapping class group is generated by two pseudo-Anosov elements. In particular, if the genus is greater than or equal to nine, we can take the generators to two conjugate pseudo-Anosov elements with arbitrarily large dilatations. Another result we prove is that the mapping class group is generated by two conjugate reducible but not periodic elements if the genus is greater than or equal to eight. We also give similar results to the first and third results for the hyperelliptic mapping class group when the genus is greater than or equal to one.

Abstract:We classify all potential configurations of essential annuli in a genus two atoroidal handlebody exterior in the $3$-sphere, building on two recent classifications: the classification of the JSJ-graph of the exterior and the classification of essential annuli in the exterior. In contrast to knots, genus two handlebody exteriors may contain infinitely many non-isotopic essential annuli, due to the JSJ-graph classification. Our main result characterizes the numbers of different types of essential annuli in such an infinite family.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the natural homomorphism from the genus g handlebody group to the outer automorphism group of the free group with rank g, in terms of length spectra. In general, the preimage of each fully irreducible outer automorphism contains a potentially infinite number of pseudo-Anosov mapping classes. Our study reveals a crucial relationship: for any pseudo-Anosov map in this preimage, its stretch factor must equal or exceed that of the corresponding fully irreducible outer automorphism. Notably, in the case of genus two, we establish that the minimum stretch factor among these pseudo-Anosov maps is less than ten times the stretch factor of the fully irreducible outer automorphism. These results partially address a question by Hensel and have practical implications, including a lower bound for the geodesic counting problem in the genus two handlebody group.

Abstract:We introduce and study \emph{simple Anosov representations} of closed hyperbolic surface groups, analogous to Minsky's \emph{primitive stable representations} of free groups. We prove that the set of simple Anosov representations into $\mathrm{SL}(d,\mathbb{C})$ with $d \geqslant 4$ strictly contains the set of Anosov representations. As a consequence, we construct domains of discontinuity for the mapping class group action on character varieties which contain non-discrete representations.

More precisely, provided any genus-2 quasi-Fuchsian group $\Gamma$ and cocompact Kleinian group $G$, then for any $K>1$, we will find a surface subgroup $H$ of $G$ that is $K$-quasiconformally conjugate to a finite index subgroup $F<\Gamma$.

Abstract:To the integral symplectic group Sp(2g,Z) we associate two posets of which we prove that they have the Cohen-Macaulay property. As an application we show that the locus of marked decomposable principally polarized abelian varieties in the Siegel space of genus g has the homotopy type of a bouquet of (g-2)-spheres. This, in turn, implies that the rational homology of moduli space of (unmarked) principal polarized abelian varieties of genus g modulo the decomposable ones vanishes in degree g-2 or lower. Another application is an improved stability range for the homology of the symplectic groups over Euclidean rings. But the original motivation comes from envisaged applications to the homology of groups of Torelli type. The proof of our main result rests on a refined nerve theorem for posets that may have an interest in its own right.

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$ acting on a surface $S$, the centralizer of G in the mapping class group $\textrm{Mod}(S)$ has a natural representation given by its action on the homology $H_1(S; \mathbb{Q})$. We consider the question of whether this representation has arithmetic image. Several authors have given positive and negative answers to this question. We give a complete answer when S has genus at most 3.

Abstract:In this paper we consider convex co-compact subgroups of the projective linear group. We prove that such a group is relatively hyperbolic with respect to a collection of virtually Abelian subgroups of rank two if and only if each open face in the ideal boundary has dimension at most one. We also introduce the "coarse Hilbert dimension" of a subset of a convex set and use it to characterize when a naive convex co-compact subgroup is word hyperbolic or relatively hyperbolic with respect to a collection of virtually Abelian subgroups of rank two.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a split real form of a complex simple adjoint group and let $S$ be a closed orientable surface of genus at least 2. We show that for generic $\operatorname{PSL}_{2k-1}(\mathbb{R})$-Hitchin representations $\rho$, the middle eigenvalue of $\rho(x)$ is not equal to 1 for all elements $x\in \pi_1(S)$ which are not null-homologous. Using the same technique, we prove that generic orbifold Hitchin representations are strongly dense. This extends the result of Long, Reid and Wolff for the $G=\operatorname{PSL}_n(\mathbb{R})$ case. Our theorem also shows that the split real forms of many simple adjoint Lie groups contain strongly dense orbifold fundamental groups, partially generalizing the work of Breuillard, Guralnick and Larsen.

Abstract:Putman and Wieland conjectured that if Σ∼→Σ is a finite branched cover between closed oriented surfaces of sufficiently high genus, then the orbits of all nonzero elements of H1(Σ∼;Q) under the action of lifts to Σ∼ of mapping classes on Σ are infinite. We prove that this holds if H1(Σ∼;Q) is generated by the homology classes of lifts of simple closed curves on Σ . We also prove that the subspace of H1(Σ∼;Q) spanned by such lifts is a symplectic subspace. Finally, simple closed curves lie on subsurfaces homeomorphic to 2‐holed spheres, and we prove that H1(Σ∼;Q) is generated by the homology classes of lifts of loops on Σ lying on subsurfaces homeomorphic to 3‐holed spheres.

Classification of Consistent Systems of Handlebody Group Representations

Abstract:The classifying spaces of handlebody groups form a modular operad. Algebras over the handlebody operad yield systems of representations of handlebody groups that are compatible with gluing. We prove that algebras over the modular operad of handlebodies with values in an arbitrary symmetric monoidal bicategory $\mathcal{M}$ (we introduce for these the name ansular functor) are equivalent to self-dual balanced braided algebras in $\mathcal{M}$. After specialization to a linear framework, this proves that consistent systems of handlebody group representations on finite-dimensional vector spaces are equivalent to ribbon Grothendieck-Verdier categories in the sense of Boyarchenko-Drinfeld. Additionally, it produces a concrete formula for the vector space assigned to an arbitrary handlebody in terms of a generalization of Lyubashenko's coend. Our main result can be used to obtain an ansular functor from vertex operator algebras subject to mild finiteness conditions. This includes examples of vertex operator algebras whose representation category has a non-exact monoidal product.

Abstract:We show that a certain locus inside the moduli space $M_g$ of hyperbolic surfaces, given by surfaces with "sufficiently many" short geodesics, is a classifying space of the handlebody mapping class group. A consequence of the construction is that the top weight cohomology of $M_g$, studied by Chan-Galatius-Payne, maps injectively into the cohomology of the handlebody mapping class group.

Abstract:We prove the congruence subgroup property for the centralizer of a finite subgroup $G$ in the mapping class group of a hyperbolic oriented and connected surface of finite topological type $S$ such that the genus of the quotient surface $S/G$ is at most $2$. As an application, we show that torsion elements in the mapping class group of a surface of genus $\leq 2$ are conjugacy distinguished.

Abstract:We initiate the study of torsion-free algebraically hyperbolic groups; these groups generalise torsion-free hyperbolic groups and are intricately related to groups with no Baumslag--Solitar subgroups. Indeed, for groups of cohomological dimension $2$ we prove that algebraic hyperbolicity is equivalent to containing no Baumslag--Solitar subgroups. This links algebraically hyperbolic groups to two famous questions of Gromov; recent work has shown these questions to have negative answers in general, but they remain open for groups of cohomological dimension $2$. We also prove that algebraically hyperbolic groups are CSA, and so have canonical abelian JSJ-decompositions. In the two-generated case we give a precise description of the form of these decompositions.
