Abstract:We first show that for a bounded pseudoconvex domain with a manifold quotient of finite-volume in the sense of Kahler-Einstein measure, the identity component of the automorphism group of this domain is semi-simple without compact factors. This partially answers an open question in [Fra95]. Then we apply this result in different settings to solve several open problems, for examples, (1). We prove that the automorphism group of the Griffiths domain [Gri71] in ℂ^2 is discrete. This gives a complete answer to an open question raised four decades ago. (2). We show that for a contractible HHR/USq complex manifold D with a finite-volume manifold quotient M, if D contains a one-parameter group of holomorphic automorphisms and the fundamental group of M is irreducible, then D is biholomorphic to a bounded symmetric domain. This theorem can be viewed as a finite-volume version of Nadel-Frankel's solution for the Kahzdan conjecture, which has been open for years. (3). We show that for a bounded convex domain D⊂ℂ^n of C^2-smooth boundary, if D has a finite-volume manifold quotient with an irreducible fundamental group, then D is biholomorphic to the unit ball in ℂ^n, which partially solves an old conjecture of Yau. For (2) and (3) above, if the complex dimension is equal to 2, more refined results will be provided.

Abstract:The non-trivial complete totally geodesic submanifolds of the complex hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes. We present two new proofs for this fact. One is a short proof based on an algebraic formula for the Riemann curvature tensor due to S. Anan'in and C. Grossi and resembles the traditional proof using Lie theory. The other is purely elementary and geometric, relying on the structures in $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ instead of general theories. In this second approach, we prove a slightly stronger result: the only non-trivial complete totally geodesic subsets of $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes without assuming that the subsets are submanifolds a priori. This second proof is also intriguing for only making use of elementary geometric constructions.

Abstract:Classical Kleinian groups are discrete subgroups of $PSL(2,\C)$ acting on the complex projective line $¶^1$, which actually coincides with the Riemann sphere, with non-empty region of discontinuity. These can also be regarded as the monodromy groups of certain differential equations. These groups have played a major role in many aspects of mathematics for decades, and also in physics. It is thus natural to study discrete subgroups of the projective group $PSL(n,\C)$, $ n > 2$. Surprisingly, this is a branch of mathematics which is in its childhood, and in this article we give an overview of it.

Abstract:The complex hyperbolic triangle group $\Gamma=\Delta_{4,\infty,\infty;\infty}$ acting on the complex hyperbolic plane ${\bf H}^2_{\mathbb C}$ is generated by complex reflections $I_1$, $I_2$, $I_3$ such that the product $I_2I_3$ has order four, the products $I_3I_1$, $I_1I_2$ are parabolic and the product $I_1I_3I_2I_3$ is an accidental parabolic element. Unexpectedly, the product $I_1I_2I_3I_2$ is a hidden accidental parabolic element. We show that the 3-manifold at infinity of $\Delta_{4,\infty,\infty;\infty}$ is the complement of the chain link $8^4_1$ in the 3-sphere. In particular, the quartic cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold $S^3-8^4_1$ admits a spherical CR-uniformization. The proof relies on a new technique to show that the ideal boundary of the Ford domain is an infinite-genus handlebody. Motivated by this result and supported by the previous studies of various authors, we conjecture that the chain link $C_p$ is an ancestor of the 3-manifold at infinity of the critical complex hyperbolic triangle group $\Delta_{p,q,r;\infty}$, for $3 \leq p \leq 9$.

A note on complex hyperbolic lattices and strict hyperbolization

Abstract:We study the connection between the fundamental groups of complex hyperbolic manifolds and those of spaces arising from the (relative) strict hyperbolization process due to Charney--Davis and Davis--Januszkiewicz--Weinberger. Viewing a non-uniform lattice $\Gamma$ in $\text{PU}(n,1)$ as a relatively hyperbolic group with respect to its cusp subgroups in the usual way, we show that when $n\geq 2$, $\Gamma$ is not isomorphic to any relatively hyperbolic group arising from the relative strict hyperbolization process, via work of Lafont--Ruffoni. We also prove that a uniform lattice in $\text{PU}(n,1)$ is not the fundamental group of a Charney-Davis strict hyperbolization when $n\geq 2$, assuming the initial complex satisfies some mild conditions.

Abstract: We study the moduli space of discrete, faithful, type-preserving representations of the modular group $\mathbf{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ into $\mathbf{PU}(3,1)$. The entire moduli space $\mathcal{M}$ is a union of $\mathcal{M}(0,\frac{2\pi}{3},\frac{4\pi}{3})$, $\mathcal{M}(\frac{2\pi}{3},\frac{4\pi}{3},\frac{4\pi}{3})$ and some isolated points. This is the first Fuchsian group such that its $\mathbf{PU}(3,1)$-representations space has been entirely constructed. Both $\mathcal{M}(0,\frac{2\pi}{3},\frac{4\pi}{3})$ and $\mathcal{M}(\frac{2\pi}{3},\frac{4\pi}{3},\frac{4\pi}{3})$ are parameterized by a square, where two opposite sides of the square correspond to representations of $\mathbf{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ into the smaller group $\mathbf{PU}(2,1)$. In particular, both sub moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}(0,\frac{2\pi}{3},\frac{4\pi}{3} )$ and $\mathcal{M}(\frac{2\pi}{3},\frac{4\pi}{3},\frac{4\pi}{3})$ interpolate the geometries studied in \cite{FalbelKoseleff:2002} and \cite{Falbelparker:2003}.
An infinite family of exotic subgroups of hyperbolic groups

Abstract:We construct the first known infinite family of quasi-isometry classes of subgroups of hyperbolic groups which are not hyperbolic and are of type $\mathrm{FP}(\mathbb{Q})$. We give a simple criterion for producing many non-hyperbolic subgroups of hyperbolic groups with strong finiteness properties. We also observe that local hyperbolicity and algebraic fibring are mutually exclusive in higher dimensions.

Abstract:In this article, we show that there exist discrete isometry groups of the $2$- and $3$-dimensional complex hyperbolic spaces with critical exponents arbitrarily close to but strictly smaller than the maximum possible value. This result shows no gap in the values of critical exponents for complex hyperbolic Kleinian groups.

Abstract:We determine conditions under which the quotient of a Kähler-Hadamard manifold by a torsion-free, discrete group of isometries admits a big set of nontrivial holomorphic functions. We also generalize a theorem of G. A. Margulis on centerless of cocompact discrete groups of automorphisms of a Carathéodory hyperbolic manifold by a different approach based on the Carathéodory pseudodistance.

Abstract:The n-dimensional complex hyperquadric is a compact complex algebraic hypersurface defined by the quadratic equation in the (n+1)-dimensional complex projective space, which is isometric to the real Grassmannmanifold of oriented 2-planes and is a compact Hermitian symmetric space of rank 2. In this paper, we study geometry of compact Lagrangian submanifolds in complex hyperquadrics from the viewpoint of the theory of isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres. From this viewpoint we provide a classification theorem of compact homogeneous Lagrangian submanifolds in complex hyperquadrics by using the moment map technique. Moreover we determine the Hamiltonian stability of compact minimal Lagrangian submanifolds embedded in complex hyperquadrics which are obtained as Gauss images of isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres with g(= 1, 2, 3) distinct principal curvatures.
A non-trivial family of trivial bundles with complex hyperbolic structure

Abstract:In $\mathrm{PU}(2,1)$, the group of holomorphic isometries of the complex hyperbolic plane, we study the space of involutions $R_1, R_2, R_3, R_4, R_5$ satisfying $R_5R_4R_3R_2R_1=1$, where $R_1$ is a reflection in a complex geodesic and the other $R_i$'s are reflections in points of the complex hyperbolic plane. We show that this space modulo $\mathrm{PU}(2,1)$-conjugation is bending-connected and has dimension $4$. Using this, we construct a $4$-dimensional bending-connected family of complex hyperbolic structures on a disc orbibundle with vanishing Euler number over the sphere with $5$ cone points of angle $\pi$. Bending-connectedness here means that we can naturally deform the geometric structure, like Dehn twists in Teichmüller theory. Additionally, finding complex hyperbolic disc orbibundles with vanishing Euler number is a hard problem, originally conjectured by W. Goldman and Y. Eliashberg and solved by S. Anan'in and N. Gusevskii, and we produce a simpler and more straightforward construction for them.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce some new invariants for complex manifolds. These invariants measure in some sense how far the complex manifolds are away from having global complex coordinates. For applications, we introduce two new invariants f((1,1)) and g((1,1)) for isolated surface singularities. We show that f((1,1)) = g((1,1)) = 1 for rational double points and cyclic quotient singularities.

Abstract:It is well-known that complex hyperbolic triangle groups $\Delta(3,3,4)$ generated by three complex reflections $I_1,I_2,I_3$ in $\mbox{PU(2,1)}$ has 1-dimensional moduli space. Deforming the representations from the classical $\mathbb{R}$-Fuchsian one to $\Delta(3,3,4; \infty)$, that is, when $I_3I_2I_1I_2$ is accidental parabolic, the 3-manifolds at infinity change from a Seifert 3-manifold to the figure-eight knot complement. When $I_3I_2I_1I_2$ is loxodromic, there is an open set $\Omega \subset \partial\mathbf H^{2}_{\mathbb C}=\mathbb S^3$ associated to $I_3I_2I_1I_2$, which is a subset of the discontinuous region. We show the quotient space $\Omega/ \Delta(3,3,4)$ is always the figure-eight knot complement in the deformation process. This gives the topological/geometrical explain that the 3-manifold at infinity of $\Delta(3,3,4; \infty)$ is the figure-eight knot complement. In particular, this confirms a conjecture of Falbel-Guilloux-Will.

Holomorphic functions on geometrically finite quotients of the ball

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a discrete and torsion-free subgroup of $\mathrm{PU}(n,1)$, the group of biholomorphisms of the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$, denoted by $\mathbb{H}^{n}_{\mathbb{C}}$. We show that if $\Gamma$ is Abelian, then $\mathbb{H}^{n}_{\mathbb{C}}/\Gamma$ is a Stein manifold. If the critical exponent $\delta(\Gamma)$ of $\Gamma$ is less than 2, a conjecture of Dey and Kapovich predicts that the quotient $\mathbb{H}^{n}_{\mathbb{C}}/\Gamma$ is Stein. We confirm this conjecture in the case where $\Gamma$ is parabolic or geometrically finite. We also study the case of quotients with $\delta(\Gamma)=2$ that contain compact complex curves and confirm another conjecture of Dey and Kapovich. We finally show that $\mathbb{H}^{n}_{\mathbb{C}}/\Gamma$ is Stein when $\Gamma$ is a parabolic or geometrically finite group preserving a totally real and totally geodesic submanifold of $\mathbb{H}^{n}_{\mathbb{C}}$, without any hypothesis on the critical exponent.

On the structure of compact Kähler manifolds with nonnegative holomorphic sectional curvature

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a "pseudo-effective" version of the holonomy principle for compact Kähler manifolds with nonnegative holomorphic sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that if a compact complex manifold $M$ admits a Kähler metric $\omega$ with nonnegative holomorphic sectional curvature and $(M,\omega)$ has no nonzero truly flat tangent vector at some point (which is satisfied when the holomorphic sectional curvature is quasi-positive), then $M$ must be projective and rationally connected. This answers a problem raised by Matsumura and Yang and extends Yau's conjecture. We also prove that a compact simply connected Kähler manifold with nonnegative holomorphic sectional curvature is projective and rationally connected. Additionally, we classify non-projective Kähler 3-dimensional manifolds with nonnegative holomorphic sectional curvature. Furthermore, we show that a compact Kähler manifold admits a Hermitian metric with positive real bisectional curvature is a projective and rationally connected manifold.

The quasi-isometry invariance of the Coset Intersection Complex

Abstract:For a pair $(G,\mathcal{P})$ consisting of a group and finite collection of subgroups, we introduce a simplicial $G$-complex $\mathcal{K}(G,\mathcal{P})$ called the coset intersection complex. We prove that the quasi-isometry type and the homotopy type of $\mathcal{K}(G,\mathcal{P})$ are quasi-isometric invariants of the group pair $(G,\mathcal{P})$. Classical properties of $\mathcal{P}$ in $G$ correspond to topological or geometric properties of $\mathcal{K}(G,\mathcal{P})$, such as having finite height, having finite width, being almost malnormal, admiting a malnormal core, or having thickness of order one. As applications, we obtain that a number of algebraic properties of $\mathcal{P}$ in $G$ are quasi-isometry invariants of the pair $(G,\mathcal{P})$. For a certain class of right-angled Artin groups and their maximal parabolic subgroups, we show that the complex $\mathcal{K}(G,\mathcal{P})$ is quasi-isometric to the Extension graph; in particular, it is quasi-isometric to a tree.

Abstract:In this paper, we study Lagrangian submanifolds of the pseudo‐nearly Kähler SL(2,R)×SL(2,R) . First, we show that they split into four different classes depending on their behavior with respect to a certain almost product structure on the ambient space. Then, we give a complete classification of totally geodesic Lagrangian submanifolds of this space.
