Abstract:We compute the expected multivolume of the amoeba of a random half dimensional complete intersection in $\mathbb{CP}^{2n}$. We also give a relative generalization of our result to the toric case.

Abstract:An $n$-dimensional algebraic variety in $({\mathbb C}^\times)^{2n}$ covers its amoeba as well as its coamoeba generically finite-to-one. We provide an upper bound for the volume of these amoebas as well as for the number of points in the inverse images under the amoeba and coamoeba maps.

Abstract:We prove that the expected area of the amoeba of a complex plane curve of degree $d$ is less than $\displaystyle{3\ln(d)^2/2+9\ln(d)+9}$ and once rescaled by $\ln(d)^2$, is asymptotically bounded from below by $3/4$. In order to get this lower bound, given disjoint isometric embeddings of a bidisc of size $1/\sqrt{d}$ in the complex projective plane, we lower estimate the probability that one of them is a submanifold chart of a complex plane curve. It exponentially converges to one as the number of bidiscs grow to $+\infty$.

Expectation of a random submanifold: the zonoid section

Abstract:We develop a calculus based on zonoids - a special class of convex bodies - for the expectation of functionals related to a random submanifold $Z$ defined as the zero set of a smooth vector valued random field on a Riemannian manifold. We identify a convenient set of hypotheses on the random field under which we define its zonoid section, an assignment of a zonoid $\zeta(p)$ in the exterior algebra of the cotangent space at each point $p$ of the manifold. We prove that the first intrinsic volume of $\zeta(p)$ is the Kac-Rice density of the expected volume of $Z$, while its center computes the expected current of integration over $Z$. We show that the intersection of random submanifolds corresponds to the wedge product of the zonoid sections and that the preimage corresponds to the pull-back. Combining this with the recently developed zonoid algebra, it allows to give a multiplication structure to the Kac-Rice formulas, resembling that of the cohomology ring of a manifold. Moreover, it establishes a connection with the theory of convex bodies and valuations, which includes very deep and difficult results such as the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality and the Brunn-Minkowsky inequality. We export them to this context to prove two analogous new inequalities for random submanifolds. Applying our results in the context of Finsler geometry, we prove some new Crofton formulas for the length of curves and the Holmes-Thompson volumes of submanifolds in a Finsler manifold.

Abstract:In this paper, we generalize the result on the average volume of random polytopes with vertices following beta distributionsto the case of non-identically distributed vectors. Specifically,we consider the convex hull of independent random vectors in $\mathbb{R}^d$, where each vector follows a beta distribution with potentially different parameters. We derive an expression for the expected volume of these generalized beta--polytopes. Additionally, we compute the expected value of a functional introduced by Wieacker, which involves the distance of facets from the origin and their volumes.Our results extend the findings of Kabluchko, Temesvari,and Thäle. Key techniques used in the proofs include the Blaschke--Petkantschin formula, Kubota's formula, and projections of beta distributed random vectors.

On the curvatures of random complex submanifolds

Abstract:For any integers $n\geq 2$ and $1\leq r\leq n-1$ satisfying $3r\geq 2n-1$, we show that the expected volume fraction of a random degree $d$ complex submanifold of $\C\mathbb{P}^n$ of codimension $r$ where the bisectional holomorphic curvature (for the induced ambient metric) is negative tends to one when $d$ goes to infinity. Here, the probability measure is the natural one associated with the Fubini--Study metric. We provide similar estimates for the holomorphic sectional curvature, the Ricci curvature, and the scalar curvature. Our results hold more generally for random submanifolds within any complex projective manifold.

Abstract:A meander can be seen as a pair of transversally intersecting simple closed curves on a 2-sphere. We consider pairs of transversally intersecting simple closed curves on a closed oriented surface of arbitrary genus g. The number of such higher genus meanders admits exponential upper and lower bounds as the number of intersections grows. Fixing the number n of bigons in the complement to the union of the two curves, we compute the precise asymptotics of genus g meanders with at most 2N intersections and show that this asymptotics is polynomial in N as N tends to infinity. We obtain a similar result for the number of positively intersecting pairs of oriented simple closed curves on a surface of genus g. We also compute the asymptotic probability of getting a meander from a random braid on a surface of genus g-1 with two boundary components. In order to effectively count meanders we identify them with integer points represented by certain square-tiled surfaces in the moduli spaces of Abelian and quadratic differentials and make use of recent advances in the geometry of these moduli spaces combined with asymptotic properties of Witten-Kontsevich 2-correlators on moduli spaces of complex curves.

Abstract:We establish central limit theorems for natural volumes of random inscribed polytopes in projective Riemannian or Finsler geometries. In addition, normal approximation of dual volumes and the mean width of random polyhedral sets are obtained. We deduce these results by proving a general central limit theorem for the weighted volume of the convex hull of random points chosen from the boundary of a smooth convex body according to a positive and continuous density in Euclidean space. In the background are geometric estimates for weighted surface bodies and Berry-Esseen bounds for functionals of independent random variables.

Abstract:Suppose that $A$ and $B$ are sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$, and we form the sumset of $A$ with $n$ random points of $B$. Given the volumes of $A$ and $B$, how should we choose them to minimize the expected volume of this sumset? Our aim in this paper is to show that we should take $A$ and $B$ to be Euclidean balls. We also consider the analogous question in the torus $\mathbb{T}^d$, and we show that in this case the optimal choices of $A$ and $B$ are bands, in other words, sets of the form $[x,y]\times\mathbb{T}^{d-1}$. We also give stability versions of our results.

Abstract:Random simplices and more general random convex bodies of dimension $p$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $p\leq n$ are considered, which are generated by random vectors having an elliptical distribution. In the high-dimensional regime, that is, if $p\to\infty$ and $n\to\infty$ in such a way that $p/n\to\gamma\in(0,1)$, a central and a stable limit theorem for the logarithmic volume of random simplices and random convex bodies is shown. The result follows from a related central limit theorem for the log-determinant of $p\times n$ random matrices whose rows are copies of a random vector with an elliptical distribution, which is established as well.

Abstract:Let $p, q \in (0, \infty]$ and $\ell_p^m(\ell_q^n)$ be the mixed-norm sequence space of real matrices $x = (x_{i, j})_{i \leq m, j \leq n}$ endowed with the (quasi-)norm $\Vert x \Vert_{p, q} := \big\Vert \big( \Vert (x_{i, j})_{j \leq n} \Vert_q \big)_{i \leq m} \Vert_p$. We shall prove a Poincaré-Maxwell-Borel lemma for suitably scaled matrices chosen uniformly at random in the $\ell_p^m(\ell_q^n)$ unit balls $\mathbb{B}_{p, q}^{m, n}$, and obtain both central and non-central limit theorems for their $\ell_p(\ell_q)$-norms. We use those limit theorems to study the asymptotic volume distribution in the intersection of two mixed-norm sequence balls. Our approach is based on a new probabilistic representation of the uniform distribution on $\mathbb{B}_{p, q}^{m, n}$.

Abstract:We consider scaling limits of random quadrangulations obtained by applying the Cori-Vauquelin-Schaeffer bijection to Bienaymé-Galton-Watson trees with stably-decaying offspring tails with an exponent $\alpha$ in (1, 2). We show that these quadrangulations admit subsequential scaling limits wich all have Hausdorff dimension $\frac{2\alpha}{\alpha-1}$ almost surely. We conjecture that the limits are unique and spherical, and we introduce a candidate for the limit that we call the $\alpha$-stable sphere. In addition, we conduct a detailed study of volume fluctuations around typical points in the limiting maps, and show that the fluctuations share similar characteristics with those of stable trees.

Abstract:We compute the Zamolodchikov volumes of some moduli spaces of conformal field theories with target spaces K3, T4, and their symmetric products. As an application we argue that sequences of conformal field theories, built from products of such symmetric products, almost never have a holographic dual with weakly coupled gravity.

Abstract:We study the geometry and spectral theory of Weil-Petersson random surfaces with genus-$g$ and $n$ cusps in the large-$n$ limit. We show that for a random hyperbolic surface in $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ with $n$ large, the number of small Laplacian eigenvalues is linear in $n$ with high probability. By work of Ballmann, Matthiesen and Mondal [7], this result is optimal up to a multiplicative constant. We also study the relative frequency of simple and non-simple closed geodesics, showing that on random surfaces with many cusps, most closed geodesics with lengths up to $\log(n)$ scales are non-simple. Our main technical contribution is a novel large-$n$ asymptotic formula for the Weil-Petersson volume $V_{g,n}\left(\ell_{1},\dots,\ell_{k}\right)$ of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}\left(\ell_{1},\dots,\ell_{k}\right)$ of genus-$g$ hyperbolic surfaces with $k$ geodesic boundary components and $n-k$ cusps with $k$ fixed, building on work of Manin and Zograf [31].

Abstract:We present a conjecture, based on computational results, on the area minimizing way to enclose and separate two arbitrary volumes in the flat cubic 3-torus. For comparable small volumes, we prove that an area minimizing double bubble in the 3-torus is the standard double bubble from R^3.

Abstract:We consider multifold convolutions of a combinatorial sequence $(a_n)_{n=0}^{\infty}$: namely, for each $k \in \mathbb{N}$ the $k$-fold convolution is $\mathcal{M}^{(k)}_n(\boldsymbol{a}) = \sum_{j_1+\dots+j_k=n} a_{j_1} \cdots a_{j_k}$. Let $C_n$ be the Catalan numbers, and let $B_n$ be the central binomial coefficients. Then for random Dyck paths or simple random walk bridges, the multifold convolutions give moments of returns to the origin, using the stars-and-bars problem. There are well-known explicit formulas for the multifold convolutions of $C_n$ and $B_n$. But even for combinatorial sequences $B_n^2$ and $B_n^3$, one may determine asymptotics of multifold convolutions for large $n$. We also discuss large deviations.

Abstract:We give a complete description of the behavior of the volume function at the boundary of the pseudoeffective cone of certain Calabi-Yau complete intersections known as Wehler N-folds. We find that the volume function exhibits a pathological behavior when N>=3, we obtain examples of a pseudoeffective R-divisor D for which the volume of D+sA, with s small and A ample, oscillates between two powers of s, and we deduce the sharp regularity of this function answering a question of Lazarsfeld. We also show that h^0(X,[mD]+A) displays a similar oscillatory behavior as m increases, showing that several notions of numerical dimensions of D do not agree and disproving a conjecture of Fujino. We accomplish this by relating the behavior of the volume function along a segment to the visits of a corresponding hyperbolic geodesics to the cusps of a hyperbolic manifold.

Abstract:Every finite collection of oriented closed geodesics in the modular surface has a canonically associated link in its unit tangent bundle coming from the periodic orbits of the geodesic flow. We study the volume of the associated link complement with respect to its unique complete hyperbolic metric. We provide the first lower volume bound that is linear in terms of the number of distinct exponents in the code words corresponding to the collection of closed geodesics.
