Abstract:Our aim in this article is to compute the mixed volume of a matroid. We give two computations. The first one is based on the integration formula for complete fans given by Brion. The second computation is a step-by-step method using deletion of elements in the matroid as in Braden-Huh-Matherne-Proudfoot-Wang.

Abstract:Normal complexes are orthogonal truncations of simplicial fans. In this paper, we develop the study of mixed volumes for normal complexes. Our main result is a sufficiency condition that ensures when the mixed volumes of normal complexes associated to a given fan satisfy the Alexandrov–Fenchel inequalities. By specializing to Bergman fans of matroids, we give a new proof of the Heron–Rota–Welsh Conjecture as a consequence of the Alexandrov–Fenchel inequalities for normal complexes.

Matroidal Mixed Eulerian Numbers

Abstract:We make a systematic study of matroidal mixed Eulerian numbers which are certain intersection numbers in the matroid Chow ring generalizing the mixed Eulerian numbers introduced by Postnikov. These numbers are shown to be valuative and obey a log-concavity relation. We establish recursion formulas and use them to relate matroidal mixed Eulerian numbers to the characteristic and Tutte polynomials, reproving results of Huh-Katz and Berget-Spink-Tseng. Generalizing Postnikov, we show that these numbers are equal to certain weighted counts of binary trees. Lastly, we study these numbers for perfect matroid designs, proving that they generalize the remixed Eulerian numbers of Nadeau-Tewari.

Abstract:The mixed volume counts the roots of generic sparse polynomial systems. Mixed cells are used to provide starting systems for homotopy algorithms that can find all those roots, and track no unnecessary path. Up to now, algorithms for that task were of enumerative type, with no general non- exponential complexity bound. A geometric algorithm is introduced in this paper. Its complexity is bounded in the average and probability-one settings in terms of some geometric invariants: quermassintegrals associated to the tuple of convex hulls of the support of each polynomial. Besides the complexity bounds, numerical results are reported. Those are consistent with an output- sensitive running time for each benchmark family where data is available. For some of those families, an asymptotic running time gain over the best code available at this time was noticed.

Abstract:In the 1990s, Kita--Yoshida and Cho--Matsumoto introduced intersection forms on the twisted (co)homologies of hyperplane arrangement complements. We give a closed combinatorial formula for these intersection pairings. We show that these intersection pairings are obtained from (continuous and discrete) Laplace transforms of subfans of the Bergman fan of the associated matroid. We compute inverses of these intersection pairings, allowing us to identify (variants of) these intersection forms with the contravariant form of Schechtman--Varchenko, and the bilinear form of Varchenko. Building on parallel joint work with C. Eur, we define a notion of scattering amplitudes for matroids. We show that matroid amplitudes satisfy locality and unitarity, and recover biadjoint scalar amplitudes in the case of the complete graphic matroid. We apply our formulae for twisted intersection forms to deduce old and new formulae for scattering amplitudes.

Abstract:The mixed area of a Reuleaux polygon and its symmetric with respect to the origin is expressed in terms of the mixed area of two explicit polygons. This gives a geometric explanation of a classical proof due to Chakerian. Mixed areas and volumes are also used to reformulate the minimization of the volume under constant width constraint as isoperimetric problems. In the two dimensional case, the equivalent formulation is solved, providing another proof of the Blaschke–Lebesgue theorem. In the three dimensional case the proposed relaxed formulation involves the mean width, the area and inclusion constraints.

Abstract:New sharp affine isoperimetric inequalities for volume decomposition functionals $X_{2}$ and $X_{3}$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ are established. To fulfil this task, we prove the recursion formulas for volume decomposition functionals and find out the connection between the domains of these functionals and matroid polytopes. Applications of matroid theory to convex geometry are presented.

Foundations of matroids -- Part 2: Further theory, examples, and computational methods

Abstract:In this sequel to "Foundations of matroids - Part 1", we establish several presentations of the foundation of a matroid in terms of small building blocks. For example, we show that the foundation of a matroid M is the colimit of the foundations of all embedded minors of M isomorphic to one of the matroids $U^2_4$, $U^2_5$, $U^3_5$, $C_5$, $C_5^\ast$, $U^2_4\oplus U^1_2$, $F_7$, $F_7^\ast$, and we show that this list is minimal. We establish similar minimal lists of building blocks for the classes of 2-connected and 3-connected matroids. We also establish a presentation for the foundation of a matroid in terms of its lattice of flats. Each of these presentations provides a useful method to compute the foundation of certain matroids, as we illustrate with a number of concrete examples. Combining these techniques with other results in the literature, we are able to compute the foundations of several interesting classes of matroids, including whirls, rank-2 uniform matroids, and projective geometries. In an appendix, we catalogue various 'small' pastures which occur as foundations of matroids, most of which were found with the assistance of a computer, and we discuss some of their interesting properties.

Abstract:Rough set theory has been successfully applied to vague and uncertain data due to its approximation ability. Matroid is a sophisticated mathematical structure to provide a unifying abstract treatment for graph theory, linear algebra, and combinatorial optimization. In this paper, we redefine rough approximation operators through matroidal approaches and build a matroidal structure of rough set theory. First, each block of a partition is converted to a uniform matroid. In this way, a partition is transformed into a family of uniform matroids. Second, these matroids are combined through the direct sum operation to form a new matroid. Therefore the scattered uniform matroids are treated as a whole one. Third, each concept in a universe is transformed to a restriction matroid. The lower and the upper approximations of each concept are established with the matroidal approach. Fourth, for any two concepts in a universe, the relationships between the approximations of them are discussed and some new properties are revealed. These properties can be hardly found without the help of matroid theory. Fifth, the boundary region and the negative region of a concept in the universe are established directly with the matroidal approach. The lower and the upper approximations of each concept are then obtained through its boundary region. This work indicates a new approach for studying rough set theory.

Abstract:This is an expository version of our paper [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1902.07384" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1902.07384">arXiv:1902.07384</a>]. Our aim is to present recent Macaulay2 algorithms for computation of mixed multiplicities of ideals in a Noetherian ring which is either local or a standard graded algebra over a field. These algorithms are based on computation of the equations of multi-Rees algebras of ideals that generalises a result of Cox, Lin and Sosa. Using these equations we propose efficient algorithms for computation of mixed volumes of convex lattice polytopes and sectional Milnor numbers of hypersurfaces with an isolated singularity.

This paper obtains that mixed volume under Steiner symmetrization is monotonic and decreasing, and a concise proof of the general Minkowski inequality by Steiner symmetrization is obtained.

Abstract:Covering-based rough set theory is a useful tool to deal with inexact, uncertain, or vague knowledge in information systems. Geometric lattice has been widely used in diverse fields, especially search algorithm design, which plays an important role in covering reductions. In this paper, we construct three geometric lattice structures of covering-based rough sets through matroids and study the relationship among them. First, a geometric lattice structure of covering-based rough sets is established through the transversal matroid induced by a covering. Then its characteristics, such as atoms, modular elements, and modular pairs, are studied. We also construct a one-to-one correspondence between this type of geometric lattices and transversal matroids in the context of covering-based rough sets. Second, we present three sufficient and necessary conditions for two types of covering upper approximation operators to be closure operators of matroids. We also represent two types of matroids through closure axioms and then obtain two geometric lattice structures of covering-based rough sets. Third, we study the relationship among these three geometric lattice structures. Some core concepts such as reducible elements in covering-based rough sets are investigated with geometric lattices. In a word, this work points out an interesting view, namely, geometric lattice, to study covering-based rough sets.
Matroid variant of Matiyasevich formula and its application

Abstract:In 1977, Yu. V. Matiyasevich proposed a formula expressing the chromatic polynomial of an arbitrary graph as a linear combination of flow polynomials of subgraphs of the original graph. In this paper, we prove that this representation is a particular case of one (easily verifiable) formula, namely, the representation of the characteristic polynomial of an arbitrary matroid as a linear combination of characteristic polynomials of dual matroids. As an application, we represent the flow polynomial of a complete graph with $n$ vertices as the sum of elementary terms with respect to all partitions of positive integer $n$. Since the growth rate of the number of all partitions is less than exponential, this technique allows us to evaluate the flow polynomial for values of $n\approx 50$. We also get an explicit expression for the characteristic polynomial of the matroid dual to the matroid of the projective geometry over a finite field. We prove, in particular, that major coefficients of all these polynomials coincide with the beginning of the row in the Pascal triangle, whose number equals the quantity of elements in the corresponding matroid. At the end part of the paper, we consider one more approach, which allows us to obtain the same results of application of our main theoren by using properties of the Tutte polynomial and the classical Rota formula for coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of a matroid. In addition, we describe the connection between the matroid variant of the Matiyasevich formula and convolution formulas for Tutte polynomials.

Valuative invariants for large classes of matroids

Abstract:We study an operation in matroid theory that allows one to transition a given matroid into another with more bases via relaxing a \emph{stressed subset}. This framework provides a new combinatorial characterization of the class of split matroids. Moreover, it permits to describe an explicit matroid subdivision of a hypersimplex, which in turn can be used to write down concrete formulas for the evaluations of any valuative invariant on these matroids. This shows that evaluations on split matroids depend solely on the behavior of the invariant on tractable subclass of Schubert matroids. We address systematically the consequences of our approach for several invariants. They include the volume and Ehrhart polynomial of base polytopes, the Tutte polynomial, Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials, the Whitney numbers of the first and second kind, spectrum polynomials and a generalization of these by Denham, chain polynomials and Speyer's $g$-polynomials, as well as Chow rings of matroids and their Hilbert--Poincaré series. The flexibility of this setting allows us to give a unified explanation for several recent results regarding the listed invariants; furthermore, we emphasize it as a powerful computational tool to produce explicit data and concrete examples.

Abstract:We define and study the dual mixed volume rational function of a sequence of polytopes, a dual version of the mixed volume polynomial. This concept has direct relations to the adjoint polynomials and the canonical forms of polytopes. We show that dual mixed volume is additive under mixed subdivisions, and is related by a change of variables to the dual volume of the Cayley polytope. We study dual mixed volume of zonotopes, generalized permutohedra, and associahedra. The latter reproduces the planar $\phi^3$-scalar amplitude at tree level.

Abstract:Zonoids are Hausdorff limits of zonotopes, while zonotopes are convex polytopes defined as the Minkowski sums of finitely many segments. We present a combinatorial framework that links the study of mixed volumes of zonoids (a topic that has applications in algebraic combinatorics) with the study of the absolute value of the Grassmannian, defined as the image of the Grassmannian under the coordinate-wise absolute value map. We use polyhedral computations to derive new families of inequalities for n zonoids in dimension d, when (n,d)=(6,2) and (6,3). Unlike the classical geometric inequalities, originating from the Brunn-Minkowski and Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequalities, the inequalities we produce have the special feature of being Minkowski linear in each of the n zonoids they involve.

Log-concavity for independent sets of valuated matroids

Abstract:Recently, several proofs of the Mason--Welsh conjecture for matroids have been found, which asserts the log-concavity of the sequence that counts independent sets of a given size. In this article we use the theory of Lorentzian polynomials, developed by Brändén and Huh, to prove a generalization of the Mason-Welsh conjecture to the context of valuated matroids. In fact, we provide a log-concavity result in the more general setting of valuated discrete polymatroids, or equivalently, M-convex functions. Our approach is via the construction of a generic extension of a valuated matroid or M-convex function, so that the bases of the extension are related to the independent sets of the original matroid. We also provide a similar log-concavity result for valuated bimatroids, which, we believe, might be of independent interest.

Volume forms on balanced manifolds and the Calabi-Yau equation

Abstract:We introduce the space of mixed-volume forms endowed with an $L^2$ metric on a balanced manifold. A geodesic equation can be derived in this space that has an interesting structure and extends the equation of Donaldson \cite{Donaldson10} and Chen-He \cite{CH11} in the space of volume forms on a Riemannian manifold. This nonlinear PDE is studied in detail and the existence of weak solution is shown for the Dirichlet problem, under a positivity assumption. Later we study the Calabi-Yau equation for balanced metrics and introduce a geometric criteria for prescribing volume forms that is closely related to the positivity assumption above. We call this assumption the sub-Astheno-Kähler condition. By deriving $C^0$ a priori estimates, we show that the existence of solutions can be established on all sub-Astheno-Kähler manifolds.

Abstract:Let $p, q \in (0, \infty]$ and $\ell_p^m(\ell_q^n)$ be the mixed-norm sequence space of real matrices $x = (x_{i, j})_{i \leq m, j \leq n}$ endowed with the (quasi-)norm $\Vert x \Vert_{p, q} := \big\Vert \big( \Vert (x_{i, j})_{j \leq n} \Vert_q \big)_{i \leq m} \Vert_p$. We shall prove a Poincaré-Maxwell-Borel lemma for suitably scaled matrices chosen uniformly at random in the $\ell_p^m(\ell_q^n)$ unit balls $\mathbb{B}_{p, q}^{m, n}$, and obtain both central and non-central limit theorems for their $\ell_p(\ell_q)$-norms. We use those limit theorems to study the asymptotic volume distribution in the intersection of two mixed-norm sequence balls. Our approach is based on a new probabilistic representation of the uniform distribution on $\mathbb{B}_{p, q}^{m, n}$.
