Abstract:A twin building consists of two buildings that are twinned by a codistance function. We prove that the local structure of a twin building uniquely determines the two buildings up to isomorphism. This has been known for twin buildings satisfying a technical condition (co).

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a wall-connected twin building and show that the local-to-global principle holds for these twin buildings. As each twin building satisfying Condition (co) (introduced in [7]) is wall-connected, we obtain a strengthening of the main result of [7] that covers also the thick irreducible affne twin buildings of rank at least 3.

Abstract:The relationship between minimal algebraic Kac-Moody groups and twin buildings is well known as is the relationship between formal completions in one direction and affine buildings. Nevertheless, as the completion of a Kac-Moody group in one direction destroys the opposite BN-pair, there exists no longer a twin building. For similar reasons, there are so far no buildings at all for analytic completions of affine Kac-Moody groups. In this article we construct a new type of twin buildings, called twin cities, that are associated to affine analytic Kac-Moody groups over the real or complex numbers. Twin cities consist of two sets of buildings. We describe applications of cities in infinite dimensional differential geometry by proving infinite dimensional versions of classical results from finite dimensional differential geometry: For example, we show that points in an isoparametric submanifold in a Hilbert space correspond to all chambers in a city. In a sequel we will describe the theory of twin cities for formal completions.

Integrability of Moufang Foundations - A Contribution to the Classification of Twin Buildings

Abstract:Buildings have been introduced by J. Tits in order to study semi-simple algebraic groups from a geometrical point of view. One of the most important results in the theory of buildings is the classification of irreducible spherical buildings of rank at least 3. About 25 years ago, M. Ronan and J. Tits defined the class of twin buildings, which generalize spherical buildings in a natural way. The motivation of their definition is provided by the theory of Kac-Moody groups. A 2-spherical twin building is uniquely determined by its local structure in almost all cases: The so-called foundation is the union of the rank 2 residues which contain an (arbitrary) chamber. Therefore, the classification of 2-spherical twin buildings reduces to the classification of all foundations which can be realized as the local structure of such a twin building. We call such a foundation "integrable". By a result of Tits, an integrable foundation is Moufang, which means that the rank 2 buildings in the foundation are Moufang polygons, and that the glueings are compatible with the Moufang structures induced on the rank 1 residues. As a consequence, the classification of Moufang polygons and the solution of the isomorphism problem for Moufang sets are essential to work out which Moufang polygons fit together in order to form a foundation. The present thesis contributes to establish complete lists of integrable foundations for certain types of diagrams, namely for simply laced diagrams and for 443 triangle diagrams. In this process, we closely follow the approach for the classification of spherical buildings. However, we have to refine the techniques used there, since in general, foundations don't only depend on the diagram and the defining field. Moreover, one of the main results in the context of Moufang sets is the solution of the isomorphism problem for Moufang sets of pseudo-quadratic spaces.

Abstract:We introduce the notions of weighted extremal K{ä}hler twins together with the related notion of extremal Sasaki twins. In the Kähler setting this leads to a generalization of the twinning phenomenon appearing among LeBrun's strongly Hermitian solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell equations on the first Hirzebruch surface \cite{Leb16} to weighted extremal metrics on Hirzebruch surfaces in general. We discover that many twins appear and that this can be viewed in the Sasaki setting as a case where we have more than one extremal ray in the Sasaki cone even when we do not allow changes within the isotopy class. We also study extremal Sasaki twins directly in the Sasaki setting with a main focus on the toric Sasaki case.

Abstract:We consider two different -invariant cohomogeneity one manifolds, one non-compact and one compact , and study the existence of coclosed -invariant -structures constructed from half-flat -structures. For , we prove the existence of a family of coclosed (but not necessarily torsion-free) -structures which is given by three smooth functions satisfying certain boundary conditions around the singular orbit and a non-zero parameter. Moreover, any coclosed -structure constructed from a half-flat -structure is in this family. For , we prove that there are no -invariant coclosed -structures constructed from half-flat -structures.

Abstract:We prove that if two finitely generated groups act on a metrically complete 2-dimensional Euclidean building, then the distance between their fixed-point sets is realised. Our proof uses the geometry of Euclidean buildings, which we view as CAT(0) spaces, and properties of ultrapowers of Euclidean buildings.

Abstract:An automorphism of a building is called uniclass if the Weyl distance between any chamber and its image lies in a single (twisted) conjugacy class of the Coxeter group. In this paper we characterise uniclass automorphisms of spherical buildings in terms of their fixed structure. For this purpose we introduce the notion of a Weyl substructure in a spherical building. We also link uniclass automorphisms to the Freudenthal--Tits magic square.

Abstract:Twin groups are planar analogues of Artin braid groups and play a crucial role in the Alexander-Markov correspondence for the isotopy classes of immersed circles on the 2-sphere without triple and higher intersections. These groups admit diagrammatic representations, leading to maps obtained by the addition and deletion of strands. This paper explores Brunnian twin groups, which are subgroups of twin groups composed of twins that become trivial when any of their strands are deleted. We establish that Brunnian twin groups consisting of more than two strands are free groups. Furthermore, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a Brunnian doodle on the 2-sphere to be the closure of a Brunnian twin. Additionally, we delve into two generalizations of Brunnian twins, namely, $k$-decomposable twins and Cohen twins, and prove some structural results about these groups. We also investigate a simplicial structure on pure twin groups that admits a simplicial homomorphism from Milnor's construction of the simplicial 2-sphere. This gives a possibility to provide a combinatorial description of homotopy groups of the 2-sphere in terms of pure twins.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the effect of symmetry on the rigidity of bar-joint frameworks, spherical frameworks and point-hyperplane frameworks in $\mathbb{R}^d$. In particular we show that, under forced or incidental symmetry, infinitesimal rigidity for spherical frameworks with vertices in $X$ on the equator and point-hyperplane frameworks with the vertices in $X$ representing hyperplanes are equivalent. We then show, again under forced or incidental symmetry, that infinitesimal rigidity properties under certain symmetry groups can be paired, or clustered, under inversion on the sphere so that infinitesimal rigidity with a given group is equivalent to infinitesimal rigidity under a paired group. The fundamental basic example is that mirror symmetric rigidity is equivalent to half-turn symmetric rigidity on the 2-sphere. With these results in hand we also deduce some combinatorial consequences for the rigidity of symmetric bar-joint and point-line frameworks.

Abstract:We prove an analogue of Kostant's convexity theorem for thick affine buildings and give an application for groups with affine BN-pairs. Recall that there are two natural retractions of the affine building onto a fixed apartment A: The retraction r centered at an alcove in A and the retraction ρ centered at a chamber in the spherical building at infinity. We prove that for each special vertex x ∈ A the set ρ(r –1(W .x)) is a certain convex hull of W .x. The proof can be reduced to a statement about Coxeter complexes and heavily relies on a character formula for highest weight representations of algebraic groups.

Abstract:Abstract We advocate an account of dualities between physical theories: the basic idea is that dual theories are isomorphic representations of a common core. We defend and illustrate this account, which we call a Schema, in relation to symmetries. Overall, the account meshes well with standard treatments of symmetries. But the distinction between the common core and the dual theories prompts a distinction between three kinds of symmetry: which we call ‘stipulated’, ‘accidental’ and ‘proper’.

Half-flat structures inducing Einstein metrics on homogeneous spaces

Abstract:In this paper, we consider half-flat $SU(3)$-structures and the subclasses of coupled and double structures. In the general case we show that the intrinsic torsion form $w_1^-$ is constant in each of the two subclasses. We then consider the problem of finding half-flat structures inducing Einstein metrics on homogeneous spaces. We give an example of a left invariant half-flat (non coupled and non double) structure inducing an Einstein metric on $S^3\times S^3$ and we show there does not exist any left invariant coupled structure inducing an ${\rm Ad}(S^1)$-invariant Einstein metric on it. Finally, we show that there are no coupled structures inducing the Einstein metric on Einstein solvmanifolds and on homogeneous Einstein manifolds of nonpositive sectional curvature.

On a Torsion/Curvature Analogue of Dual Connections and Statistical Manifolds

Abstract:In analogy to the concept of a non-metric dual connection, which is essential in defining statistical manifolds, we develop that of a torsion dual connection. Consequently, we illustrate the geometrical meaning of such a torsion dual connection and show how the use of both connections preserves the cracking of parallelograms in spaces equipped with a connection and its torsion dual. The coefficients of such a torsion dual connection are essentially computed by demanding a vanishing mutual torsion among the two connections. For this manifold we then prove two basic Theorems. In particular, if both connections are metric-compatible we show that there exists a specific $3$-form measuring how the connection and its torsion dual deviate away from the Levi-Civita one. Furthermore, we prove that for these torsion dual manifolds flatness of one connection does not necessary impose flatness on the other but rather that the curvature tensor of the latter is given by a specific divergence. Finally, we give a self-consistent definition of the mutual curvature tensor of two connections and subsequently define the notion of a curvature dual connection.

Twin-width of graphs on surfaces

Abstract:Twin-width is a width parameter introduced by Bonnet, Kim, Thomassé and Watrigant [FOCS'20, JACM'22], which has many structural and algorithmic applications. We prove that the twin-width of every graph embeddable in a surface of Euler genus $g$ is $18\sqrt{47g}+O(1)$, which is asymptotically best possible as it asymptotically differs from the lower bound by a constant multiplicative factor. Our proof also yields a quadratic time algorithm to find a corresponding contraction sequence. To prove the upper bound on twin-width of graphs embeddable in surfaces, we provide a stronger version of the Product Structure Theorem for graphs of Euler genus $g$ that asserts that every such graph is a subgraph of the strong product of a path and a graph with a tree-decomposition with all bags of size at most eight with a single exceptional bag of size $\max\{8,32g-27\}$.

Crystal Twinning of Bicontinuous Cubic Structures

Abstract:Bicontinuous cubic structures in soft matter consist of two intertwining labyrinths separated by a partitioning layer. Combining experiments, numerical modelling and techniques in differential geometry, we investigate twinning defects in bicontinuous cubic structures. We first demonstrate that a twin boundary is most likely to occur at a plane that cuts the partitioning layer almost perpendicularly, so that the perturbation caused by twinning remains minimal. This principle can be used as a criterion to identify potential twin boundaries, as demonstrated through detailed investigations of mesoporous silica crystals characterized by diamond and gyroid surfaces. We then discuss that a twin boundary can result from a stacking fault in the arrangement of inter-lamellar attachments at an early stage of structure formation. It is further shown that enhanced curvature fluctuations near the twin boundary would cost energy because of geometrical frustration, which would be eased by a crystal distortion that is experimentally observed.

Abstract:Inspired by a width invariant on permutations defined by Guillemot and Marx, Bonnet, Kim, Thomass\'e, and Watrigant introduced the twin-width of graphs, which is a parameter describing its structural complexity. This invariant has been further extended to binary structures, in several (basically equivalent) ways. We prove that a class of binary relational structures (that is: edge-colored partially directed graphs) has bounded twin-width if and only if it is a first-order transduction of a~proper permutation class. As a by-product, we show that every class with bounded twin-width contains at most pairwise non-isomorphic -vertex graphs.
