Abstract:Twin-width is a recently introduced graph parameter. In this article, we compute twin-width of various finite graphs. In particular, we prove that the twin-widths of finite graphs with 4 and 5 vertices are less than equal to 1 and 2, respectively. We show that the constructions of dual graph and line graph do not preserve twin-width. Also, we give upper bounds for the twin-width of King's graph and Rook's graph.

A tamed family of triangle-free graphs with unbounded chromatic number

Abstract:We construct a hereditary class of triangle-free graphs with unbounded chromatic number, in which every non-trivial graph either contains a pair of non-adjacent twins or has an edgeless vertex cutset of size at most two. This answers in the negative a question of Chudnovsky, Penev, Scott, and Trotignon. The class is the hereditary closure of a family of (triangle-free) twincut graphs $G_1, G_2, \ldots$ such that $G_k$ has chromatic number $k$. We also show that every twincut graph is edge-critical.

Abstract:Twin nodes in a static network capture the idea of being substitutes for each other for maintaining paths of the same length anywhere in the network. In dynamic networks, we model twin nodes over a time-bounded interval, noted $(\Delta,d)$-twins, as follows. A periodic undirected time-varying graph $\mathcal G=(G_t)_{t\in\mathbb N}$ of period $p$ is an infinite sequence of static graphs where $G_t=G_{t+p}$ for every $t\in\mathbb N$. For $\Delta$ and $d$ two integers, two distinct nodes $u$ and $v$ in $\mathcal G$ are $(\Delta,d)$-twins if, starting at some instant, the outside neighbourhoods of $u$ and $v$ has non-empty intersection and differ by at most $d$ elements for $\Delta$ consecutive instants. In particular when $d=0$, $u$ and $v$ can act during the $\Delta$ instants as substitutes for each other in order to maintain journeys of the same length in time-varying graph $\mathcal G$. We propose a distributed deterministic algorithm enabling each node to enumerate its $(\Delta,d)$-twins in $2p$ rounds, using messages of size $O(\delta_\mathcal G\log n)$, where $n$ is the total number of nodes and $\delta_\mathcal G$ is the maximum degree of the graphs $G_t$'s. Moreover, using randomized techniques borrowed from distributed hash function sampling, we reduce the message size down to $O(\log n)$ w.h.p.

Sparse Graphs of Twin-width 2 Have Bounded Tree-width

Abstract:Twin-width is a structural width parameter introduced by Bonnet, Kim, Thomassé and Watrigant [FOCS 2020]. Very briefly, its essence is a gradual reduction (a contraction sequence) of the given graph down to a single vertex while maintaining limited difference of neighbourhoods of the vertices, and it can be seen as widely generalizing several other traditional structural parameters. Having such a sequence at hand allows to solve many otherwise hard problems efficiently. Our paper focuses on a comparison of twin-width to the more traditional tree-width on sparse graphs. Namely, we prove that if a graph $G$ of twin-width at most $2$ contains no $K_{t,t}$ subgraph for some integer $t$, then the tree-width of $G$ is bounded by a polynomial function of $t$. As a consequence, for any sparse graph class $\mathcal{C}$ we obtain a polynomial time algorithm which for any input graph $G \in \mathcal{C}$ either outputs a contraction sequence of width at most $c$ (where $c$ depends only on $\mathcal{C}$), or correctly outputs that $G$ has twin-width more than $2$. On the other hand, we present an easy example of a graph class of twin-width $3$ with unbounded tree-width, showing that our result cannot be extended to higher values of twin-width.

Abstract:Distance-hereditary graphs are in important graph class in graph theory, as they are well-placed in the graph class hierarchy and permit many algorithmic results. We investigate structural and algorithmic advantages of a directed version of this well-researched graph class. Since the previously defined distance-hereditary digraphs do not permit a recursive structure, we define directed twin-distance-hereditary graphs, which can be constructed by several twin and pendant vertex operations analogously to undirected distance-hereditary graphs and which still preserves the distance hereditary property. We give a characterization by forbidden induced subdigraphs and place the class in a hierarchy comparing it to related classes. We further show algorithmic advantages concerning directed width parameters, directed graph coloring and some other well-known digraph problems which are NP-hard in general, but computable in polynomial or even linear time on twin-distance-hereditary digraphs. This includes computability of directed path-width and tree-width in linear time and the directed chromatic number in polynomial time. From our result that directed twin-distance-hereditary graphs have directed clique-width at most 3 it follows by Courcelle's theorem on directed clique-width that we can compute every graph problem describable in monadic second-order logic on quantification over vertices and vertex sets as well as some further problems like Hamiltonian Path/Cycle in polynomial time.

Abstract:Inspired by a width invariant on permutations defined by Guillemot and Marx, Bonnet, Kim, Thomass\'e, and Watrigant introduced the twin-width of graphs, which is a parameter describing its structural complexity. This invariant has been further extended to binary structures, in several (basically equivalent) ways. We prove that a class of binary relational structures (that is: edge-colored partially directed graphs) has bounded twin-width if and only if it is a first-order transduction of a~proper permutation class. As a by-product, we show that every class with bounded twin-width contains at most pairwise non-isomorphic -vertex graphs.

The minimum number of maximal independent sets in twin-free graphs

Abstract:The problem of determining the maximum number of maximal independent sets in certain graph classes dates back to a paper of Miller and Muller and a question of Erdős and Moser from the 1960s. The minimum was always considered to be less interesting due to simple examples such as stars. In this paper we show that the problem becomes interesting when restricted to twin-free graphs, where no two vertices have the same open neighbourhood. We consider the question for arbitrary graphs, bipartite graphs and trees. The minimum number of maximal independent sets turns out to be logarithmic in the number of vertices for arbitrary graphs, linear for bipartite graphs and exponential for trees. In the latter case, the minimum and the extremal graphs have been determined earlier by Taletski\uı and Malyshev, but we present a shorter proof.

Twin-width of graphs with tree-structured decompositions

Abstract:The twin-width of a graph measures its distance to co-graphs and generalizes classical width concepts such as tree-width or rank-width. Since its introduction in 2020 (Bonnet et. al. 2020), a mass of new results has appeared relating twin width to group theory, model theory, combinatorial optimization, and structural graph theory. We take a detailed look at the interplay between the twin-width of a graph and the twin-width of its components under tree-structured decompositions: We prove that the twin-width of a graph is at most twice its strong tree-width, contrasting nicely with the result of (Bonnet and Déprés 2022), which states that twin-width can be exponential in tree-width. Further, we employ the fundamental concept from structural graph theory of decomposing a graph into highly connected components, in order to obtain an optimal linear bound on the twin-width of a graph given the widths of its biconnected components. For triconnected components we obtain a linear upper bound if we add red edges to the components indicating the splits which led to the components. Extending this approach to quasi-4-connectivity, we obtain a quadratic upper bound. Finally, we investigate how the adhesion of a tree decomposition influences the twin-width of the decomposed graph.

Twin-free $K_r$-saturated Graphs and Maximally Independent Sets in $K_3$-free Graphs

Abstract:We say that two vertices are twins if they have the same neighbourhood and that a graph is $K_r$-saturated if it does not contain $K_r$ but adding any new edge to it creates a $K_r$. In 1964, Erdős, Hajnal and Moon showed that $sat(n,K_r)=(r-2)n+o(n)$ for $r \geq 3$, where $sat(n,K_r)$ is the minimum number of edges in a $K_r$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices, and determined the unique extremal graph. This graph has many twins, leading us to define $tsat(n,K_r)$ to be the minimum number of edges in a twin-free $K_r$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices. We show that $(5 +2/3)n + o(n) \leq tsat(n,K_3) \leq 6n+o(n)$ and that $\left(r+2\right)n + o(n) \leq tsat(n,K_r) \leq (r+3)n+o(n)$ for $r \geq 4$. We also consider a variant of this problem where we additionally require the graphs to have large minimum degree. Both of these problems turn out be intimately related to two other problems regarding maximally independent sets of a given size in $K_3$-free graphs and generalisations of these problems to $K_r$ with $r \geq 4$. The first problem is to maximise the number of maximally independent sets given the number of vertices and the second problem is to minimise the number of edges given the number of maximally independent sets. They are interesting in their own right.

Abstract:We establish a list of characterizations of bounded twin-width for hereditary classes of totally ordered graphs: as classes of at most exponential growth studied in enumerative combinatorics, as monadically NIP classes studied in model theory, as classes that do not transduce the class of all graphs studied in finite model theory, and as classes for which model checking first-order logic is fixed-parameter tractable studied in algorithmic graph theory. This has several consequences. First, it allows us to show that every hereditary class of ordered graphs either has at most exponential growth, or has at least factorial growth. This settles a question first asked by Balogh, Bollobás, and Morris [Eur. J. Comb. ’06] on the growth of hereditary classes of ordered graphs, generalizing the Stanley-Wilf conjecture/Marcus-Tardos theorem. Second, it gives a fixed-parameter approximation algorithm for twin-width on ordered graphs. Third, it yields a full classification of fixed-parameter tractable first-order model checking on hereditary classes of ordered binary structures. Fourth, it provides a model-theoretic characterization of classes with bounded twin-width. Finally, it settles the small conjecture [SODA ’21] in the case of ordered graphs.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Computing, Volume 53, Issue 5, Page 1602-1640, October 2024. We recently introduced the notion of twin-width, a novel graph invariant, and showed that first-order model checking can be solved in time [math] for [math]-vertex graphs given with a witness that the twin-width is at most [math], called [math]-contraction sequence or [math]-sequence, and formulas of size [math] [Bonnet et al., JACM '22]. The inevitable price to pay for such a general result is that [math] is a tower of exponentials of height roughly [math]. In this paper, we show that algorithms based on twin-width need not be impractical. We present [math]-time algorithms for [math]-independent set, [math]-scattered set, [math]-clique, and [math]-dominating set when an [math]-sequence of the graph is given in input. We further show how to solve the weighted version of [math]-independent set, subgraph isomorphism, and induced subgraph isomorphism in the slightly worse running time [math]. Up to logarithmic factors in the exponent, all these running times are optimal unless the exponential time hypothesis fails. Like our first-order model checking algorithm, these new algorithms are based on a dynamic programming scheme following the sequence of contractions forward. We then show a second algorithmic use of the contraction sequence by starting at its end and rewinding it. As an example of such a reverse scheme, we present a polynomial-time algorithm that properly colors the vertices of a graph with relatively few colors, thereby establishing that bounded twin-width classes are [math]-bounded. This significantly extends the [math]-boundedness of bounded rank-width classes and does so with a very concise proof. It readily yields a constant approximation for max independent set on [math]-free graphs of bounded twin-width and a [math]-approximation for min coloring on bounded twin-width graphs. We further observe that a constant approximation for max independent set on bounded twin-width graphs (but arbitrarily large clique number) would actually imply a polynomial-time approximation scheme. The third algorithmic use of twin-width builds on the second one. Playing the contraction sequence backward, we show that bounded twin-width graphs can be edge-partitioned into a linear number of bicliques such that both sides of the bicliques are on consecutive vertices in a fixed vertex ordering. This property is trivially shared with graphs of bounded average degree. Given that biclique edge-partition, we show how to solve the unweighted single-source shortest paths, and hence all-pairs shortest paths, in time [math] and time [math], respectively. In sharp contrast, even diameter does not admit a truly subquadratic algorithm on bounded twin-width graphs unless the strong exponential time hypothesis fails. The fourth algorithmic use of twin-width builds on the so-called versatile tree of contractions [Bonnet et al., Comb. Theory '22], a branching and more robust witness of low twin-width. We present constant-approximation algorithms for min dominating set and related problems on bounded twin-width graphs by showing that the integrality gap is constant. This is done by going down the versatile tree and stopping according to a problem-dependent criterion. At the reached node, a greedy approach yields the desired approximation.

Abstract:We introduce the notions of weighted extremal K{ä}hler twins together with the related notion of extremal Sasaki twins. In the Kähler setting this leads to a generalization of the twinning phenomenon appearing among LeBrun's strongly Hermitian solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell equations on the first Hirzebruch surface \cite{Leb16} to weighted extremal metrics on Hirzebruch surfaces in general. We discover that many twins appear and that this can be viewed in the Sasaki setting as a case where we have more than one extremal ray in the Sasaki cone even when we do not allow changes within the isotopy class. We also study extremal Sasaki twins directly in the Sasaki setting with a main focus on the toric Sasaki case.

Abstract:Twin-width is a recently introduced graph parameter for finite graphs. It is an open problem to determine whether there is an $n$-vertex graph having twin-width at least $n/2$ (due to J. Ahn, K. Hendrey, D. Kim and S. Oum). In an earlier paper, the author showed that such a graph with less than equal to 5 vertices does not exist. In this article, we show that such a graph with 6 vertices does not exist. More precisely, we prove that each graph with 6 vertices has twin-width less than equal to 2.

Abstract:We investigate the twin‐width of the Erdős‐Rényi random graph G(n,p) . We unveil a surprising behavior of this parameter by showing the existence of a constant p∗≈0.4 such that with high probability, when p∗≤p≤1−p∗ , the twin‐width is asymptotically 2p(1−p)n , whereas, when 0 p>1−p∗ , the twin‐width is significantly higher than 2p(1−p)n . In addition, we show that the twin‐width of G(n,1/2) is concentrated around n/2−3nlogn/2 within an interval of length o(nlogn) . For the sparse random graph, we show that with high probability, the twin‐width of G(n,p) is Θ(np) when (726lnn)/n≤p≤1/2 .

Abstract:Twin-width is a width parameter introduced by Bonnet, Kim, Thomassé and Watrigant [FOCS'20, JACM'22], which has many structural and algorithmic applications. We prove that the twin-width of every graph embeddable in a surface of Euler genus $g$ is $18\sqrt{47g}+O(1)$, which is asymptotically best possible as it asymptotically differs from the lower bound by a constant multiplicative factor. Our proof also yields a quadratic time algorithm to find a corresponding contraction sequence. To prove the upper bound on twin-width of graphs embeddable in surfaces, we provide a stronger version of the Product Structure Theorem for graphs of Euler genus $g$ that asserts that every such graph is a subgraph of the strong product of a path and a graph with a tree-decomposition with all bags of size at most eight with a single exceptional bag of size $\max\{8,32g-27\}$.

Abstract:Twin-width is a structural width parameter introduced by Bonnet, Kim, Thomassé and Watrigant [FOCS 2020], and has interesting applications in the areas of logic on graphs and in parameterized algorithmics. Very briefly, the essence of twin-width is in a gradual reduction (a contraction sequence) of the given graph down to a single vertex while maintaining limited difference of neighbourhoods of the vertices, and it can be seen as widely generalizing several other traditional structural parameters. While for many natural graph classes it is known that their twin-width is bounded, published upper bounds on the twin-width in non-trivial cases are very often "astronomically large". We focus on planar graphs, which are known to have bounded twin-width already since the introduction of it, but it took some time for the first explicit "non-astronomical" upper bounds to come. Namely, in the order of preprint appearance, it was the bound of at most 183 by Jacob and Pilipczuk [arXiv, January 2022], and 583 by Bonnet, Kwon and Wood [arXiv, February 2022]. Subsequent arXiv manuscripts in 2022 improved the bound down to 37 (Bekos et al.), 11 and 9 (both by Hliněný). We further elaborate on the approach used in the latter manuscripts, proving that the twin-width of every planar graph is at most 8, and construct a witnessing contraction sequence in linear time. Note that the currently best lower-bound planar example is of twin-width 7, by Král and Lamaison [arXiv, September 2022]. We also prove small explicit upper bounds on the twin-width of bipartite planar and 1-planar graphs (6 and 16), and of map graphs (38). The common denominator of all these results is the use of a novel specially crafted recursive decomposition of planar graphs, which may be found useful also in other areas.

Abstract:The new graph parameter twin-width, introduced by Bonnet, Kim, Thomassé and Watrigant in 2020, allows for an FPT algorithm for testing all FO properties of graphs. This makes classes of efficiently bounded twin-width attractive from the algorithmic point of view. In particular, classes of efficiently bounded twin-width include proper interval graphs, and (as digraphs) posets of width k . Inspired by an existing generalization of interval graphs into so-called k -thin graphs, we define a new class of proper k-mixed-thin graphs which largely generalizes proper interval graphs. We prove that proper k -mixed-thin graphs have twin-width linear in k , and that a slight subclass of k -mixed-thin graphs is transduction-equivalent to posets of width k′ such that there is a quadratic-polynomial relation between k and k′ . In addition to that, we also give an abstract overview of the so-called red potential method which we use to prove our twin-width bounds.

Abstract:We call a pair of vertex-disjoint, induced subtrees of a rooted trees twins if they have the same counts of vertices by out-degrees. The likely maximum size of twins in a uniformly random, rooted Cayley tree of size $n\to\infty$ is studied. It is shown that the expected number of twins of size $(2+\delta)\sqrt{\log n\cdot\log\log n}$ approaches zero, while the expected number of twins of size $(2-\delta)\sqrt{\log n\cdot\log\log n}$ approaches infinity.

Abstract:An ordered $r$-matching of size $n$ is an $r$-uniform hypergraph on a linearly ordered set of vertices, consisting of $n$ pairwise disjoint edges. Two ordered $r$-matchings are isomorphic if there is an order-preserving isomorphism between them. A pair of twins in an ordered $r$-matching is formed by two vertex disjoint isomorphic sub-matchings. Let $t^{(r)}(n)$ denote the maximum size of twins one may find in every ordered $r$-matching of size $n$. By relating the problem to that of largest twins in permutations and applying some recent Erdős-Szekeres-type results for ordered matchings, we show that $t^{(r)}(n)=\Omega\left(n^{\frac{3}{5\cdot(2^{r-1}-1)}}\right)$ for every fixed $r\geqslant 2$. On the other hand, $t^{(r)}(n)=O\left(n^{\frac{2}{r+1}}\right)$, by a simple probabilistic argument. As our main result, we prove that, for almost all ordered $r$-matchings of size $n$, the size of the largest twins achieves this bound.
