Abstract:Given a Brauer class on a K3 surface defined over a number field, we prove that there exists infinitely many reductions where the Brauer class vanishes, under certain technical hypotheses, answering a question of Frei--Hassett--Várilly-Alvarado.

Abstract:Given a smooth projective variety over a number field and an element of its Brauer group, we consider the specialization of the Brauer class at a place of good reduction for the variety and the class. We are interested in the case of K3 surfaces. We show that a Brauer class on a very general polarized K3 surface over a number field becomes trivial after specialization at a set of places of positive natural density. We deduce that there exist cubic fourfolds over number fields that are conjecturally irrational, with rational reduction at a positive proportion of places. We also deduce that there are twisted derived equivalent K3 surfaces which become derived equivalent after reduction at a positive proportion of places.

Abstract:An element in the Brauer group of a general complex projective $K3$ surface $S$ defines a sublattice of the transcendental lattice of $S$. We consider those elements of prime order for which this sublattice is Hodge-isometric to the transcendental lattice of another K3 surface $X$. We recall that this defines a finite map between moduli spaces of polarized K3 surfaces and we compute its degree. We show how the Picard lattice of $X$ determines the Picard lattice of $S$ in the case that the Picard number of $X$ is two.

Invariants of Vanishing Brauer Classes

Abstract:A specialization of a K3 surface with Picard rank one to a K3 with rank two defines a vanishing class of order two in the Brauer group of the general K3 surface. We give the B-field invariants of this class. We apply this to the K3 double plane defined by a cubic fourfold with a plane. The specialization of such a cubic fourfold whose group of codimension two cycles has rank two to one which has rank three induces such a specialization of the double planes. We determine the Picard lattice of the specialized double plane as well as the vanishing Brauer class and its relation to the natural "Clifford" Brauer class. This provides more insight in the specializations. It allows us to explicitly determine the K3 surfaces associated to infinitely many of the conjecturally rational cubic fourfolds obtained as such specializations.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a K3 surface over a number field. We prove that $X$ has infinitely many specializations where its Picard rank jumps, hence extending our previous work with Shankar--Shankar--Tang to the case where $X$ might have potentially bad reduction. We prove a similar result for generically ordinary non-isotrivial families of K3 surfaces over curves over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p$ which extends previous work of Maulik--Shankar--Tang. As a consequence, we give a new proof of the ordinary Hecke orbit conjecture for orthogonal and unitary Shimura varieties.

Abstract:Let E and E' be elliptic curves over Q with complex multiplication by the ring of integers of an imaginary quadratic field K and let Y=Kum(ExE') be the minimal desingularisation of the quotient of ExE' by the action of -1. We study the Brauer groups of such surfaces Y and use them to furnish new examples of transcendental Brauer-Manin obstructions to weak approximation.

Abstract:We study the virtual geometry of the moduli spaces of curves and sheaves on K3 surfaces in primitive classes. Equivalences relating the reduced Gromov-Witten invariants of K3 surfaces to characteristic numbers of stable pairs moduli spaces are proven. As a consequence, we prove the Katz-Klemm-Vafa conjecture evaluating $\lambda_g$ integrals (in all genera) in terms of explicit modular forms. Indeed, all K3 invariants in primitive classes are shown to be governed by modular forms. The method of proof is by degeneration to elliptically fibered rational surfaces. New formulas relating reduced virtual classes on K3 surfaces to standard virtual classes after degeneration are needed for both maps and sheaves. We also prove a Gromov-Witten/Pairs correspondence for toric 3-folds. Our approach uses a result of Kiem and Li to produce reduced classes. In Appendix A, we answer a number of questions about the relationship between the Kiem-Li approach, traditional virtual cycles, and symmetric obstruction theories. The interplay between the boundary geometry of the moduli spaces of curves, K3 surfaces, and modular forms is explored in Appendix B by A. Pixton.

Abstract:We study complex algebraic K3 surfaces of Picard ranks 11, 12, and 13 of finite automorphism group that admit a Jacobian elliptic fibration with a section of order two. We prove that the K3 surfaces admit a birational model isomorphic to a projective quartic hypersurface and construct geometrically the frames of all supported Jacobian elliptic fibrations. We determine the dual graphs of all smooth rational curves for these K3 surfaces, the polarizing divisors, and the embedding of the reducible fibers in each frame into the corresponding dual graph.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to prove a local p-adic monodromy theorem for ordinary abelian surfaces and K3 surfaces with bad reduction in characteristic p. Abstract:We investigate obstruction classes of moduli spaces of sheaves on K3 surfaces. We extend previous results by Caldararu, explicitly determining the obstruction class and its order in the Brauer group. Our main theorem establishes a short exact sequence relating the Brauer group of the moduli space to that of the underlying K3 surface. This provides a criterion for when the moduli space is fine, generalising well-known results for K3 surfaces. Additionally, we explore applications to Ogg-Shafarevich theory for Beauville-Mukai systems. Furthermore, we investigate birational equivalences of Beauville-Mukai systems on elliptic K3 surfaces, presenting a complete characterisation of such equivalences.

On the descendent Gromov-Witten theory of a K3 surface

Abstract:We study the reduced descendent Gromov-Witten theory of K3 surfaces in primitive curve classes. We present a conjectural closed formula for the stationary theory, which generalizes the Bryan-Leung formula. We also prove a new recursion that allows to remove descendent insertions of $1$ in many instances. Together this yields an efficient way to compute a large class of invariants (modulo the conjecture on the stationary part). As a corollary we conjecture a surprising polynomial structure which underlies the Gromov-Witten invariants of the K3 surface.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a $K3$ surface over a $p$-adic field $k$ such that for some abelian surface $A$ isogenous to a product of two elliptic curves, there is an isomorphism over the algebraic closure of $k$ between $X$ and the Kummer surface associated to $A$. Under some assumptions on the reduction types of the elliptic curve factors of $A$, we prove that the Chow group $A_0(X)$ of zero-cycles of degree $0$ on $X$ is the direct sum of a divisible group and a finite group. This proves a conjecture of Raskind and Spiess and of Colliot-Thélène and it is the first instance for $K3$ surfaces when this conjecture is proved in full. This class of $K3$'s includes, among others, the diagonal quartic surfaces. In the case of good ordinary reduction we describe many cases when the finite summand of $A_0(X)$ can be completely determined.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field, and let $\mathcal{X}$ be a proper regular flat scheme over $\mathcal{O}_{K}$ with a generic fiber $X$ geometrically connected over $K$. We prove that there is an exact sequence up to finite groups $0\rightarrow Sha(Pic_{X/K}^0)\rightarrow Br(\mathcal{X})\rightarrow Br(X_{\bar{K}})^{G_K}\rightarrow 0$, which generalizes a theorem of Artin and Grothendieck for arithmetic surfaces to arbitrary dimensions. Consequently, we reduce Artin's question regarding the finiteness of $Br(\mathcal{X})$ for proper regular flat schemes $\mathcal{X}$ over $\mathbb{Z}$ to $3$-dimensional arithmetic schemes.

Abstract:Let $X\subset ¶^5$ be a smooth cubic fourfold. A well known conjecture asserts that $X$ is rational if and only if there an Hodge theoretically associated K3 surface $S$. The surface $S$ can be associated to $X$ in two other different ways. If there is an equivalence of categories $\sA_X \simeq D^b(S,\alpha)$ where $\sA_X$ is the Kuznetsov component of $D^b(X)$ and $\alpha$ is a Brauer class, or if there is an isomorphism between the transcendental motive $t(X)$ and the (twisted ) transcendental motive of a K3 surface$S$. In this note we consider families of cubic fourfolds with a finite group of automorphisms and describe the cases where there is an associated K3 surface in one of the above senses.

Abstract:Using Gauss-Manin derivatives of normal functions, we arrive at some remarkable results on the non-triviality of the transcendental regulator for $K_m$ of a very general projective algebraic manifold. Our strongest results are for the transcendental regulator for $K_1$ of a very general $K3$ surface. We also construct an explicit family of $K_1$ cycles on $H \oplus E_8 \oplus E_8$-polarized $K3$ surfaces, and show they are indecomposable by a direct evaluation of the real regulator. Critical use is made of natural elliptic fibrations, hypersurface normal forms, and an explicit parametrization by modular functions.

Abstract:Let $(S,L)$ be a general primitively polarized $K3$ surface of genus $g$. For every $0\leq \delta \leq g$ we consider the Severi variety parametrizing integral curves in $|L|$ with exactly $\delta$ nodes as singularities. We prove that its closure in $|L|$ is connected as soon as $\delta\leq g-1$. If $\delta\leq g-4$, we obtain the stronger result that the Severi variety is irreducible, as predicted by a well-known conjecture. The results are obtained by degeneration to Halphen surfaces.
