Abstract:In this paper we show that some natural classes of relational structures have both dual small and dual big Ramsey degrees with respect to some natural classes of morphisms. We start by showing that the class of all finite relational structures over a finite relational language has dual small Ramsey degrees with respect to quotient maps, and that in the same setting projectively universal countably infinite structures have dual big Ramsey degrees. We then show that the same is true for some natural special cases such as graphs and posets (with respect to quotient maps) and metric spaces (with respect to non-expansive surjections). An important exception is the class of reflexive tournaments: they have neither dual small nor dual big Ramsey degrees. Our proof strategy is based on the categorical interpretation of structural Ramsey theory because the inherent duality of category theory facilitates the reasoning in the dual context.

Abstract:This paper investigates big Ramsey degrees of unrestricted relational structures in (possibly) infinite languages. Despite significant progress in the study of big Ramsey degrees, the big Ramsey degrees of many classes of structures with finite small Ramsey degrees are still not well understood. We show that if there are only finitely many relations of every arity greater than one, then unrestricted relational structures have finite big Ramsey degrees, and give some evidence that this is tight. This is the first time finiteness of big Ramsey degrees has been established for a random structure in an infinite language. Our results represent an important step towards a better understanding of big Ramsey degrees for structures with relations of arity greater than two.

Fraïssé's Conjecture and big Ramsey degrees of structures admitting finite monomorphic decomposition

Abstract:In this paper we show that a countable structure admitting a finite monomorphic decomposition has finite big Ramsey degrees if and only if so does every monomorphic part in its minimal monomorphic decomposition. The necessary prerequisite for this result is the characterization of monomorphic structures with finite big Ramsey degrees: a countable monomorphic structure has finite big Ramsey degrees if and only if it is chainable by a chain with finite big Ramsey degrees. Interestingly, both characterizations require deep structural properties of chains. Fraïssé's Conjecture (actually, its positive resolution due to Laver) is instrumental in the characterization of monomorphic structures with finite big Ramsey degrees, while the analysis of big Ramsey combinatorics of structures admitting a finite monomorphic decomposition requires a product Ramsey theorem for big Ramsey degrees. We find this last result particularly intriguing because big Ramsey degrees misbehave notoriously when it comes to general product statements.

Abstract:We develop infinite-dimensional Ramsey theory for Fraïssé limits of finitely constrained free amalgamation classes in finite binary languages. We show that our approach is optimal and in particular, recovers the exact big Ramsey degrees proved in [2] for these structures. A crucial step in the work develops the new notion of an A.3(2)-ideal and shows that Todorcevic's Abstract Ramsey Theorem holds when Axiom A.3(2) is replaced by the weaker assumption of an A.3(2)-ideal.

On Ramsey degrees, compactness and approximability

Abstract:One of the consequences of the Compactness Principle in structural Ramsey theory is that the small Ramsey degrees cannot exceed the corresponding big Ramsey degrees, thereby justifying the choice of adjectives. However, it is unclear what happens in the realm of dual Ramsey degrees due to the lack of the compactness argument that applies to that setting. In this paper we present a framework within which both "direct" and dual Ramsey statements can be stated and reasoned about in a uniform fashion. We introduce the notion of approximability which yields a general compactness argument powerful enough to prove statements about both "direct" and dual Ramsey phenomena. We conclude the paper with an application of the new strategies by generalizing Voigt's $\star$-version of the Infinite Ramsey Theorem to a large class of relational structures and deriving a Ramsey statement for "loose colorings" of enumerated Fra\"ıssé limits.

A survey on big Ramsey structures

Abstract:In recent years, there has been much progress in the field of structural Ramsey theory, in particular in the study of big Ramsey degrees. In all known examples of infinite structures with finite big Ramsey degrees, there is in fact a single expansion of the structure, called a big Ramsey structure, which correctly encodes the exact big Ramsey degrees of every finite substructure simultaneously. The first half of the article collects facts about this phenomenon that have appeared in the literature into a single cohesive framework, thus offering a conceptual survey of big Ramsey structures. We present some original results indicating that the standard methods of proving finite big Ramsey degrees automatically yield big Ramsey structures, often with desirable extra properties. The second half of the article is a survey in the more traditional sense, discussing numerous examples from the literature and showing how they fit into our framework. We also present some general results on how big Ramsey degrees are affected by expanding structures with unary functions.

Abstract:We develop a transfer principle of structural Ramsey theory from finite structures to ultraproducts. We show that under certain mild conditions, when a class of finite structures has finite small Ramsey degrees, under the (Generalized) Continuum Hypothesis the ultraproduct has finite big Ramsey degrees for internal colorings. The necessity of restricting to internal colorings is demonstrated by the example of the ultraproduct of finite linear orders. Under CH, this ultraproduct L⁎ has, as a spine, η1 , an uncountable analogue of the order type of rationals η . Finite big Ramsey degrees for η were exactly calculated by Devlin in [5] . It is immediate from [39] that η1 fails to have finite big Ramsey degrees. Moreover, we extend Devlin's coloring to η1 to show that it witnesses big Ramsey degrees of finite tuples in η on every copy of η in η1 , and consequently in L⁎ . This work gives additional confirmation that ultraproducts are a suitable environment for studying Ramsey properties of finite and infinite structures.

Generalised Indiscernibles, Dividing Lines, and Products of Structures

Abstract:Generalised indiscernibles highlight a strong link between model theory and structural Ramsey theory. In this paper, we use generalised indiscernibles as tools to prove results in both these areas. More precisely, we first show that a reduct of an ultrahomogenous $\aleph_0$-categorical structure which has higher arity than the original structure cannot be Ramsey. In particular, the only nontrivial Ramsey reduct of the generically ordered random $k$-hypergraph is the linear order. We then turn our attention to model-theoretic dividing lines that are characterised by collapsing generalised indiscernibles, and prove, for these dividing lines, several transfer principles in (full and lexicographic) products of structures. As an application, we construct new algorithmically tame classes of graphs.

Characterisation of the big Ramsey degrees of the generic partial order

Abstract:As a result of 33 intercontinental Zoom calls, we characterise big Ramsey degrees of the generic partial order. This is an infinitary extension of the well known fact that finite partial orders endowed with linear extensions form a Ramsey class (this result was announced by Nešetřil and Rödl in 1984 with first published proof by Paoli, Trotter and Walker in 1985). Towards this, we refine earlier upper bounds obtained by Hubička based on a new connection of big Ramsey degrees to the Carlson-Simpson theorem and we also introduce a new technique of giving lower bounds using an iterated application of the upper-bound theorem.

Big Ramsey Degrees of Countable Ordinals

Abstract:Ramsey's theorem states that for all finite colorings of an infinite set, there exists an infinite homogeneous subset. What if we seek a homogeneous subset that is also order-equivalent to the original set? Let $S$ be a linearly ordered set and $a \in N$. The big Ramsey degree of $a$ in $S$, denoted $T(a,S)$, is the least integer $t$ such that, for any finite coloring of the $a$-subsets of $S$, there exists $S'\subseteq S$ such that (i) $S'$ is order-equivalent to $S$, and (ii) if the coloring is restricted to the $a$-subsets of $S'$ then at most $t$ colors are used. Mašulović \& Šobot (2019) showed that $T(a,\omega+\omega)=2^a$. From this one can obtain $T(a,\zeta)=2^a$. We give a direct proof that $T(a,\zeta)=2^a$. Mašulović and Šobot (2019) also showed that for all countable ordinals $\alpha < \omega^\omega$, and for all $a \in N$, $T(a,\alpha)$ is finite. We find exact value of $T(a,\alpha)$ for all ordinals less than $\omega^\omega$ and all $a\in N$.

A monadicity theorem for higher algebraic structures

Abstract:We develop a theory of Eilenberg-Moore objects in any $(\infty,2)$-category and extend Barr-Beck's monadicity theorem to any $(\infty,2)$-category that admits Eilenberg-Moore objects. We apply this result to various $(\infty,2)$-categories of higher algebraic structures to obtain a monadicity theorem for enriched $\infty$-categories, $\infty$-operads and higher Segal objects. Analyzing Eilenberg-Moore objects in the $(\infty,2)$-categories of symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories and lax (oplax) symmetric monoidal functors we extend classical results about lax (oplax) symmetric monoidal monads to the $\infty$-categorical world: we construct two tensor products for algebras over lax (oplax) symmetric monoidal monads, respectively: the first one extends the relative tensor product for modules over an $\mathbb{E}_{\mathrm{k}}$-algebra for $2 \leq \mathrm{k} \leq \infty$, the second one generalizes the object-wise tensor product for $\mathbb{E}_{\mathrm{k}}$-algebras in any $\mathbb{E}_{\mathrm{k}}$-monoidal $\infty$-category. As an application we construct a tensor product for algebras over any Hopf $\infty$-operad.

Topological finiteness properties of monoids. Part 2: special monoids, one-relator monoids, amalgamated free products, and HNN extensions

Abstract:We show how topological methods developed in a previous article can be applied to prove new results about topological and homological finiteness properties of monoids. A monoid presentation is called special if the right-hand side of each relation is equal to $1$. We prove results which relate the finiteness properties of a monoid defined by a special presentation with those of its group of units. Specifically we show that the monoid inherits the finiteness properties $F_n$ and $FP_n$ from its group of units. We also obtain results which relate the geometric and cohomological dimensions of such a monoid to those of its group of units. We apply these results to prove a Lyndon's Identity Theorem for one-relator monoids of the form $\langle A \mid r=1 \rangle$. In particular we show that all such monoids are of type $F_{\infty}$ (and $FP_{\infty}$), and that when $r$ is not a proper power, then the monoid has geometric and cohomological dimension at most $2$. The first of these results resolves an important case of a question of Kobayashi from 2000 on homological finiteness properties of one-relator monoids. We also show how our topological approach can be used to prove results about the closure properties of various homological and topological finiteness properties for amalgamated free products and HNN-extensions of monoids. To prove these results we introduce new methods for constructing equivariant classifying spaces for monoids, as well as developing a Bass-Serre theory for free constructions of monoids.

Extended Stone Duality via Monoidal Adjunctions

Abstract:Extensions of Stone-type dualities have a long history in algebraic logic and have also been instrumental for proving results in algebraic language theory. We show how to extend abstract categorical dualities via monoidal adjunctions, subsuming various incarnations of classical extended Stone and Priestley duality as special cases. Guided by these categorical foundations, we investigate residuation algebras, which are algebraic models of language derivatives, and show the subcategory of derivation algebras to be dually equivalent to the category of profinite ordered monoids, restricting to a duality between boolean residuation algebras and profinite monoids. We further refine this duality to capture relational morphisms of profinite ordered monoids, which dualize to natural morphisms of residuation algebras. As a special case of the discrete version of the duality between monoids and complete residuation algebras, we obtain a novel concrete description for the dual of the category of all small categories and functors.

Coalgebraic methods for Ramsey degrees of unary algebras

Abstract:In this paper we are interested in the existence of small and big Ramsey degrees of classes of finite unary algebras in arbitrary (not necessarily finite) algebraic language $\Omega$. We think of unary algebras as $M$-sets where $M = \Omega^*$ is the free monoid of words over the alphabet $\Omega$ and show that for an arbitrary monoid $M$ (finite or infinite) the class of all finite $M$-sets has finite small Ramsey degrees. This immediately implies that the class of all finite $G$-sets, where $G$ is an arbitrary group (finite or infinite), has finite small Ramsey degrees, and that the class of all finite unary algebras over an arbitrary (finite or infinite) algebraic language $\Omega$ has finite small Ramsey degrees. This generalizes some Ramsey-type results of M.\ Sokić concerning finite unary algebras over finite languages and finite $G$-sets for finite groups~$G$. To do so we develop a completely new strategy that relies on the fact that right adjoints preserve the Ramsey property. We then treat $M$-sets as Eilenberg-Moore coalgebras for "half a comonad" and using pre-adjunctions transport the Ramsey properties we are interested in from the category of finite or countably infinite chains of order type $\omega$. Moreover, we show that finite objects have finite big Ramsey degrees in the corresponding cofree structures over countably many generators.

Enriching Diagrams with Algebraic Operations

Abstract:In this paper, we extend diagrammatic reasoning in monoidal categories with algebraic operations and equations. We achieve this by considering monoidal categories that are enriched in the category of Eilenberg-Moore algebras for a monad. Under the condition that this monad is monoidal and affine, we construct an adjunction between symmetric monoidal categories and symmetric monoidal categories enriched over algebras for the monad. This allows us to devise an extension, and its semantics, of the ZX-calculus with probabilistic choices by freely enriching over convex algebras, which are the algebras of the finite distribution monad. We show how this construction can be used for diagrammatic reasoning of noise in quantum systems.

Tukey reducibility for categories -- In search of the strongest statement in finite Ramsey theory

Abstract:Every statement of the Ramsey theory of finite structures corresponds to the fact that a particular category has the Ramsey property. We can, then, compare the strength of Ramsey statements by comparing the ``Ramsey strength'' of the corresponding categories. The main thesis of this paper is that establishing pre-adjunctions between pairs of categories is an appropriate way of comparing their ``Ramsey strength''. What comes as a pleasant surprise is that pre-adjunctions generalize the Tukey reducibility in the same way categories generalize preorders. In this paper we set forth a classification program of statements of finite Ramsey theory based on their relationship with respect to this generalized notion of Tukey reducibility for categories. After identifying the ``weakest'' Ramsey category, we prove that the Finite Dual Ramsey Theorem is as powerful as the full-blown version of the Graham-Rothschild Theorem, and conclude the paper with the hypothesis that the Finite Dual Ramsey Theorem is the ``strongest'' of all finite Ramsey statements.

Practical and Structural Infinitary Expansions

Abstract:Given a structure $M$ we introduce infinitary logic expansions, which generalise the Morleyisation. We show that these expansions are tame, in the sense that they preserve and reflect both the Embedding Ramsey Property (ERP) and the Modelling Property (MP). We then turn our attention to Scow's theorem connecting generalised indiscernibles with Ramsey classes and show that by passing through infinitary logic, one can obtain a stronger result, which does not require any technical assumptions. We also show that every structure with ERP, not necessarily countable, admits a linear order which is a union of quantifier-free types, effectively proving that any Ramsey structure is ``essentially'' ordered. We also introduce a version of ERP for classes of structures which are not necessarily finite (the finitary-ERP) and prove a strengthening of the Kechris-Pestov-Todorcevic correspondence for this notion.

Bounded $t$-structures, finitistic dimensions, and singularity categories of triangulated categories

Abstract:Recently, Amnon Neeman settled a bold conjecture by Antieau, Gepner, and Heller regarding the relationship between the regularity of finite-dimensional noetherian schemes and the existence of bounded $t$-structures on their derived categories of perfect complexes. In this paper, using different methods, we prove some very general results about the existence of bounded $t$-structures on (not necessarily algebraic or topological) triangulated categories and their invariance under completion. We show that if the opposite category of an essentially small triangulated category has finite finitistic dimension in our sense, then the existence of a bounded t-structure on it forces it to be equal to its completion. We also prove a parallel result regarding the equivalence of all bounded t-structures on any intermediate triangulated category between the starting category and its completion. Our general treatment, when specialized to the case of schemes, immediately gives us Neeman's theorem as an application and significantly generalizes another remarkable theorem by Neeman about the equivalence of bounded $t$-structures on the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves. When specialized to other cases like associative rings, nonpositive DG-rings, connective $\mathbb{E}_1$-rings, triangulated categories without models, etc., we get many other applications. Under mild finiteness assumptions, these results not only give a categorical obstruction (the singularity category in our sense) to the existence of bounded $t$-structures on a triangulated category, but also provide plenty of triangulated categories on which all bounded $t$-structures are equivalent. The strategy used in our treatment is introducing a new concept of finitistic dimension for triangulated categories and lifting $t$-structures along completions of triangulated categories.

Abstract:Lawvere's algebraic theories, or Lawvere theories, underpin a categorical approach to general algebra, and Lawvere's adjunction between semantics and algebraic structure leads to an equivalence between Lawvere theories and finitary monads on the category of sets. Several authors have transported these ideas to a variety of settings, including contexts of category theory enriched in a symmetric monoidal closed category. In this paper, we develop a general axiomatic framework for enriched structure-semantics adjunctions and monad-theory equivalences for subcategories of arities. Not only do we establish a simultaneous generalization of the monad-theory equivalences previously developed in the settings of Lawvere (1963), Linton (1966), Dubuc (1970), Borceux-Day (1980), Power (1999), Nishizawa-Power (2009), Lack-Rosický (2011), Lucyshyn-Wright (2016), and Bourke-Garner (2019), but also we establish a structure-semantics theorem that generalizes those given in the first four of these works while applying also to the remaining five, for which such a result has not previously been developed. Furthermore, we employ our axiomatic framework to establish broad new classes of examples of enriched monad-theory equivalences and structure-semantics adjunctions for subcategories of arities enriched in locally bounded closed categories, including various convenient closed categories that are relevant in topology and analysis and need not be locally presentable.
