Abstract:The integrable quantum models, associated to the transfer matrices of the 6-vertex reflection algebra for spin 1/2 representations, are studied in this paper. In the framework of Sklyanin's quantum separation of variables (SOV), we provide the complete characterization of the eigenvalues and eigenstates of the transfer matrix and the proof of the simplicity of the transfer matrix spectrum. Moreover, we use these integrable quantum models as further key examples for which to develop a method in the SOV framework to compute matrix elements of local operators. This method has been introduced first in [1] and then used also in [2], it is based on the resolution of the quantum inverse problem (i.e. the reconstruction of all local operators in terms of the quantum separate variables) plus the computation of the action of separate covectors on separate vectors. In particular, for these integrable quantum models, which in the homogeneous limit reproduce the open spin-1/2 XXZ quantum chains with non-diagonal boundary conditions, we have obtained the SOV-reconstructions for a class of quasi-local operators and determinant formulae for the covector-vector actions. As consequence of these findings we provide one determinant formulae for the matrix elements of this class of reconstructed quasi-local operators on transfer matrix eigenstates.

Abstract:The continuum limit of the tilted SU(2) spin model is shown to give rise to the gauge Landau-Lifshitz equation which provides a unified description for various spin orders. For a definite gauge, we find a double periodic solution, where the conical spiral, in-plane spiral, helical, and ferromagnetic spin orders become special cases, respectively. For another gauge, we obtain the skyrmion-crystal solution. By simulating the influence of magnetic field and temperature for our covariant model, we find a spontaneous formation of skyrmion-fragment lattice and obtain a wider range of skyrmion-crystal phase in comparison to the conventional Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya model.
SOV approach for integrable quantum models associated to general representations on spin-1/2 chains of the 8-vertex reflection algebra

Abstract:The analysis of the transfer matrices associated to the most general representations of the 8-vertex reflection algebra on spin-1/2 chains is here implemented by introducing a quantum separation of variables (SOV) method which generalizes to these integrable quantum models the method first introduced by Sklyanin. More in detail, for the representations reproducing in their homogeneous limits the open XYZ spin-1/2 quantum chains with the most general integrable boundary conditions, we explicitly construct representations of the 8-vertex reflection algebras for which the transfer matrix spectral problem is separated. Then, in these SOV representations we get the complete characterization of the transfer matrix spectrum (eigenvalues and eigenstates) and its non-degeneracy. Moreover, we present the first fundamental step toward the characterization of the dynamics of these models by deriving determinant formulae for the matrix elements of the identity on separated states, which apply in particular to transfer matrix eigenstates. The comparison of our analysis for the 8-vertex reflection algebra with that of [1, 2] for the 6-vertex one leads to the interesting remark that a profound similarity in both the characterization of the spectral problems and of the scalar products exists for these two different realizations of the reflection algebra once they are described by SOV method. As it will be shown in a future publication, this remarkable similarity will be at the basis of the simultaneous determination of form factors of local operators of integrable quantum models associated to general reflection algebra representations of both 8-vertex and 6-vertex type.

Valence bond solids for SU(n) spin chains: exact models, spinon confinement, and the Haldane gap

Abstract:To begin with, we introduce several exact models for SU(3) spin chains: (1) a translationally invariant parent Hamiltonian involving four-site interactions for the trimer chain, with a three-fold degenerate ground state. We provide numerical evidence that the elementary excitations of this model transform under representation 3bar of SU(3) if the original spins of the model transform under rep. 3. (2) a family of parent Hamiltonians for valence bond solids of SU(3) chains with spin reps. 6, 10, and 8 on each lattice site. We argue that of these three models, only the latter two exhibit spinon confinement and hence a Haldane gap in the excitation spectrum. We generalize some of our models to SU(n). Finally, we use the emerging rules for the construction of VBS states to argue that models of antiferromagnetic chains of SU(n) spins in general possess a Haldane gap if the spins transform under a representation corresponding to a Young tableau consisting of a number of boxes \lambda which is divisible by n. If \lambda and n have no common divisor, the spin chain will support deconfined spinons and not exhibit a Haldane gap. If \lambda and n have a common divisor different from n, it will depend on the specifics of the model including the range of the interaction.

Entanglement asymmetry in the critical XXZ spin chain

Abstract:We study the explicit breaking of a $SU(2)$ symmetry to a $U(1)$ subgroup employing the entanglement asymmetry, a recently introduced observable that measures how much symmetries are broken in a part of extended quantum systems. We consider as specific model the critical XXZ spin chain, which breaks the $SU(2)$ symmetry of spin rotations except at the isotropic point, and is described by the massless compact boson in the continuum limit. We examine the $U(1)$ subgroup of $SU(2)$ that is broken outside the isotropic point by applying conformal perturbation theory, which we complement with numerical simulations on the lattice. We also analyse the entanglement asymmetry of the full $SU(2)$ group. By relying on very generic scaling arguments, we derive an asymptotic expression for it.

Abstract:We perform a systematic exact algebraic search for integrable spin-S chains which are isotropic in spin space, i.e. are su(2)-invariant. The families of spin chains found for S < 14 support recent arguments in favour of the complete classification of all such integrable chains. The integrable families of spin chains are discussed in the light of the conjectured spin-dependent properties of the Heisenberg chain.

Abstract:An orthogonal basis of the Hilbert space for the quantum spin chain associated with the su(3) algebra is introduced. Such kind of basis could be treated as a nested generalization of separation of variables (SoV) basis for high-rank quantum integrable models. It is found that all the monodromy-matrix elements acting on a basis vector take simple forms. With the help of the basis, we construct eigenstates of the su(3) inhomogeneous spin torus (the trigonometric su(3) spin chain with antiperiodic boundary condition) from its spectrum obtained via the off-diagonal Bethe Ansatz (ODBA). Based on small sites (i.e. N=2) check, it is conjectured that the homogeneous limit of the eigenstates exists, which gives rise to the corresponding eigenstates of the homogenous model.

On Separation of Variables for Reflection Algebras

Abstract:We implement our new Separation of Variables (SoV) approach for open quantum integrable models associated to higher rank representations of the reflection algebras. We construct the (SoV) basis for the fundamental representations of the $Y(gl_n)$ reflection algebra associated to general integrable boundary conditions. Moreover, we give the conditions on the boundary $K$-matrices allowing for the transfer matrix to be diagonalizable with simple spectrum. These SoV basis are then used to completely characterize the transfer matrix spectrum for the rank one and two reflection algebras. The rank one case is developed for both the rational and trigonometric fundamental representations of the 6-vertex reflection algebra. On the one hand, we extend the complete spectrum characterization to representations previously lying outside the SoV approach, e.g. those for which the standard Algebraic Bethe Ansatz applies. On the other hand, we show that our new SoV construction can be reduced to the generalized Sklyanin's one whenever it is applicable. The rank two case is developed explicitly for the fundamental representations of the $Y(gl_3)$ reflection algebra associated to general integrable boundary conditions. For both rank one and two our SoV approach leads to a complete characterization of the transfer matrix spectrum in terms of a set of polynomial solutions to the corresponding quantum spectral curve equation. Those are finite difference functional equations of order equal to the rank plus one, i.e., here two and three respectively for the $Y(gl_2)$ and $Y(gl_3)$ reflection algebras.

Abstract:Based on the finite-size analysis of the spectrum of the quantum group invariant deformation of the $OSp(3|2)$ superspin chain we identify the operator content of the conformal field theory describing the model in its scaling limit. We find that the macroscopic degeneracy of the conformal weights observed in the thermodynamic limit of the isotropic superspin chain is lifted by the deformation.

Abstract:We apply our new approach of quantum Separation of Variables (SoV) to the complete characterization of the transfer matrix spectrum of quantum integrable lattice models associated to gl(n)-invariant R-matrices in the fundamental representations. We consider lattices with N sites and quasi-periodic boundary conditions associated to an arbitrary twist K having simple spectrum (but not necessarily diagonalizable). In our approach the SoV basis is constructed in an universal manner starting from the direct use of the conserved charges of the models, i.e., from the commuting family of transfer matrices. Using the integrable structure of the models, incarnated in the hierarchy of transfer matrices fusion relations, we prove that our SoV basis indeed separates the spectrum of the corresponding transfer matrices. Moreover, the combined use of the fusion rules, of the known analytic properties of the transfer matrices and of the SoV basis allows us to obtain the complete characterization of the transfer matrix spectrum and to prove its simplicity. Any transfer matrix eigenvalue is completely characterized as a solution of a so-called quantum spectral curve equation that we obtain as a difference functional equation of order n. Namely, any eigenvalue satisfies this equation and any solution of this equation having prescribed properties leads to an eigenvalue. We construct the associated eigenvector, unique up to normalization, by computing its decomposition on the SoV basis that is of a factorized form written in terms of the powers of the corresponding eigenvalues. If the twist matrix K is diagonalizable with simple spectrum then the transfer matrix is also diagonalizable with simple spectrum. In that case, we give a construction of the Baxter Q-operator satisfying a T-Q equation of order n, the quantum spectral curve equation, involving the hierarchy of the fused transfer matrices.

Abstract:We derive by the traditional algebraic Bethe ansatz method the Bethe equations for the general open XXZ spin chain with non-diagonal boundary terms under the Nepomechie constraint [J. Phys. A 37 (2004), 433-440, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0304092" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0304092">arXiv:hep-th/0304092</a>]. The technical difficulties due to the breaking of $\mathsf{U}(1)$ symmetry and the absence of a reference state are overcome by an algebraic construction where the two-boundary Temperley-Lieb Hamiltonian is realised in a new $U_{\mathfrak{q}}\mathfrak{sl}_2$-invariant spin chain involving infinite-dimensional Verma modules on the edges [J. High Energy Phys. 2022 (2022), no. 11, 016, 64 pages, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2207.12772" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2207.12772">arXiv:2207.12772</a>]. The equivalence of the two Hamiltonians is established by proving Schur-Weyl duality between $U_{\mathfrak{q}}\mathfrak{sl}_2$ and the two-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra. In this framework, the Nepomechie condition turns out to have a simple algebraic interpretation in terms of quantum group fusion rules.

(Non-)unitarity of strictly and partially massless fermions on de Sitter space II: an explanation based on the group-theoretic properties of the spin-3/2 and spin-5/2 eigenmodes

Abstract:In our previous article [Letsios 2023 J. High Energ. Phys. JHEP05(2023)015], we showed that the strictly massless spin-3/2 field, as well as the strictly and partially massless spin-5/2 fields, on $N$-dimensional ($N \geq 3 $) de Sitter spacetime ($dS_{N}$) are non-unitary unless $N=4$. The (non-)unitarity was demonstrated by simply observing that there is a (mis-)match between the representation-theoretic labels that correspond to the Unitary Irreducible Representations (UIR's) of the de Sitter (dS) algebra spin$(N,1)$ and the ones corresponding to the space of eigenmodes of the field theories. In this paper, we provide a technical representation-theoretic explanation for this fact by studying the (non-)existence of positive-definite, dS invariant scalar products for the spin-3/2 and spin-5/2 strictly/partially massless eigenmodes on $dS_{N}$ ($N \geq 3$). Our basic tool is the examination of the action of spin$(N,1)$ generators on the space of eigenmodes, leading to the following findings. For odd $N$, any dS invariant scalar product is identically zero. For even $N > 4$, any dS invariant scalar product must be indefinite. This gives rise to positive-norm and negative-norm eigenmodes that mix with each other under spin$(N,1)$ boosts. In the $N=4$ case, the positive-norm sector decouples from the negative-norm sector and each sector separately forms a UIR of spin$(4,1)$. Our analysis makes extensive use of the analytic continuation of tensor-spinor spherical harmonics on the $N$-sphere ($S^{N}$) to $dS_{N}$ and also introduces representation-theoretic techniques that are absent from the mathematical physics literature on half-odd-integer-spin fields on $dS_{N}$.

Volume Changing Symmetries by Matrix Product Operators

Abstract:We consider spin chain models with exotic symmetries that change the length of the spin chain. It is known that the XXZ Heisenberg spin chain at the supersymmetric point $\Delta=-1/2$ possesses such a symmetry: it is given by the supersymmetry generators, which change the length of the chain by one unit. We show that volume changing symmetries exist also in other spin chain models, and that they can be constructed using a special tensor network, which is a simple generalization of a Matrix Product Operator. As examples we consider the folded XXZ model and its perturbations, and also a new hopping model that is defined on constrained Hilbert spaces. We show that the volume changing symmetries are not related to integrability: the symmetries can survive even non-integrable perturbations. We also show that the known supersymmetry generator of the XXZ chain with $\Delta=-1/2$ can also be expressed as a generalized Matrix Product Operator.

Universality Class of Integer Quantum Spin Chains: S=2 Case Study

Abstract:The density-matrix renormalization-group technique is employed to show explicitly that S = 2 quantum spin chains belong to the same universality class as S = 1 spin chains. The dispersion of the single-magnon band for periodic chains is shown to be root Delta(2) + omega(q)(2), where Delta is the Haldane gap and omega(q) = upsilon\sin(pi-q)\ with upsilon = Delta xi, xi as the correlation length, pi-q = 2 pi n/L, L as the chain length, and n as an integer. Moreover, the existence of spin-1/2 topological excitations due to the breaking of one singlet bond is demonstrated by finite-size scaling of correlation functions decaying as exp(-r/xi)/root L. These stringent numerical tests, as well as the repulsive interactions between magnons, provide strong evidence in favor of the existence of a universality class for integer quantum spin chains conjectured by Haldane.
Spin chain techniques for angular momentum quasicharacters

Abstract:We study the ring of invariant functions over the $N$-fold Cartesian product of copies of the compact Lie group $G=SU(2)$, modulo the action of conjugation by the diagonal subgroup, generalizing the group character ring. For $N=1$, an orthonormal basis for the space of invariant functions is given by the irreducible characters, and the structure constants under pointwise multiplication are the coefficients of the Clebsch-Gordan series for the reduction of angular momentum tensor products ($3j$ coefficients). For $N \ge 2$, the structure constants under pointwise multiplication of the corresponding invariants, which we term irreducible quasicharacters, are Racah $3(2N\!-\!1)j$ recoupling coefficients, which can be decomposed as products of $9j$ coefficients (for $N=2$, they are squares thereof). We identify the irreducible quasicharacters for $\times^N\! SU(2)$ with traces of representations of group elements, over totally coupled angular momentum states labelled by binary coupling trees $T$ with $N$ leaves, $N\!-\!1$ internal vertices and associated intermediate edge labels. Using concrete spin chain realizations and projection techniques, we give explicit constructions for some low degree $N=2, 3$ and $4$ quasicharacters. In the case $N=2$, related methods are used to work out the expansions of products of generic, with elementary spin-$\textstyle{\frac 12}$, quasicharacters (equivalent to an \emph{ab initio} evaluation of certain basic $9j$ coefficients). We provide an appendix which summarizes formal properties of the quasicharacter calculus known from our previous work for both $SU(2)$ and for compact $G$ (J Math Phys 59 (8) 083505 (2018) and 62(3) 033514 (2021). In particular, we provide an explicit derivation for the $N=2$ angular momentum quasicharacter product rule.

The $J_1$-$J_2$ spin chain and the $O(3)$ non-linear sigma model at $θ= π$

Abstract:There are two competing pictures for how the $O(3)$ non-linear sigma model (NLSM) with a topological theta term renormalises to the $\mathfrak{\hat{su}}(2)_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model. In the Affleck-Haldane picture, an `extension field' parametrises the correlated fluctuations of the couplings and extends the target space from $S^2$ to $S^3$; recently, however, Zirnbauer has advanced a competing picture where the extension field is frozen out and the infrared theory is more naturally thought of as a compact free boson dual to $\mathfrak{\hat{su}}(2)_1$. We show that the $J_1$-$J_2$ spin chain evinces a phase transition between these pictures -- corresponding to whether the dimer field that parametrises local singlet order is part of a joint $O(4)$ Néel-singlet order parameter or appears as a separate gapped mode. For the $O(3)$ NLSM itself, this analysis supports the Zirnbauer picture.

Entanglement in Spin-1 Heisenberg Chains

Abstract:By using the concept of negativity, we study entanglement in spin-one Heisenberg chains. Both the bilinear chain and the bilinear-biquadratic chain are considered. Due to the SU(2) symmetry, the negativity can be determined by two correlators, which greatly facilitate the study of entanglement properties. Analytical results of negativity are obtained in the bilinear model up to four spins and the two-spin bilinear-biquadratic model, and numerical results of negativity are presented. We determine the threshold temperature before which the thermal state is doomed to be entangled.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that any translation and $SU_2(\IC)$-invariant pure state of $\IM=\otimes_{k \in \IZ}\!M^{(k)}_d(\IC)$, that is also real, lattice symmetric and reflection positive with a certain twist $r_0 \in U_d(\IC)$, is finitely correlated and its two-point spatial correlation function decays exponentially whenever $d$ is an odd integer. In particular, the Heisenberg iso-spin anti-ferromagnetic integer spin model admits unique low temperature limiting ground state and its spatial correlation function decays exponentially. The unique low temperature limiting ground state of the Hamiltonian is determined by the unique solution to Clebsch-Gordon inter-twinning isometry between two representations of $SU_2(\IC)$.

Notes on Integrable Boundary Interactions of Open $SU(4)$ Alternating Spin Chains

Abstract:In <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1704.05807" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1704.05807">arXiv:1704.05807</a>, it was shown that the planar flavored ABJM theory is integrable in the scalar sector at two-loop order using coordinate Bethe ansatz. A salient feature of this case is that the boundary reflection matrices are anti-diagonal with respect to the chosen basis. In this paper, we relax the coefficients of the boundary terms to be general constants in order to search for integrable systems among this class. We found that at each end of the spin chain, the only integrable boundary interaction, besides the one in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1704.05807" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1704.05807">arXiv:1704.05807</a>, is the one with vanishing boundary interactions leading to diagonal reflection matrices. We also construct non-supersymmetric plannar flavored ABJM theory which leads to trivial boundary interaction at both ends of the open chain from two-loop anomalous dimension matrix in the scalar sector.
