Abstract:In this paper, we prove that any translation and $SU_2(\IC)$-invariant pure state of $\IM=\otimes_{k \in \IZ}\!M^{(k)}_d(\IC)$, that is also real, lattice symmetric and reflection positive with a certain twist $r_0 \in U_d(\IC)$, is finitely correlated and its two-point spatial correlation function decays exponentially whenever $d$ is an odd integer. In particular, the Heisenberg iso-spin anti-ferromagnetic integer spin model admits unique low temperature limiting ground state and its spatial correlation function decays exponentially. The unique low temperature limiting ground state of the Hamiltonian is determined by the unique solution to Clebsch-Gordon inter-twinning isometry between two representations of $SU_2(\IC)$.

Valence bond solids for SU(n) spin chains: exact models, spinon confinement, and the Haldane gap

Abstract:To begin with, we introduce several exact models for SU(3) spin chains: (1) a translationally invariant parent Hamiltonian involving four-site interactions for the trimer chain, with a three-fold degenerate ground state. We provide numerical evidence that the elementary excitations of this model transform under representation 3bar of SU(3) if the original spins of the model transform under rep. 3. (2) a family of parent Hamiltonians for valence bond solids of SU(3) chains with spin reps. 6, 10, and 8 on each lattice site. We argue that of these three models, only the latter two exhibit spinon confinement and hence a Haldane gap in the excitation spectrum. We generalize some of our models to SU(n). Finally, we use the emerging rules for the construction of VBS states to argue that models of antiferromagnetic chains of SU(n) spins in general possess a Haldane gap if the spins transform under a representation corresponding to a Young tableau consisting of a number of boxes \lambda which is divisible by n. If \lambda and n have no common divisor, the spin chain will support deconfined spinons and not exhibit a Haldane gap. If \lambda and n have a common divisor different from n, it will depend on the specifics of the model including the range of the interaction.

Thermal and magnetic properties of integrable spin-1 and spin-3/2 chains with applications to real compounds

Abstract:The ground state and thermodynamic properties of spin-1 and spin-3/2 chains are investigated via exactly solved su(3) and su(4) models with physically motivated chemical potential terms. The analysis involves the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz and the High Temperature Expansion (HTE) methods. For the spin-1 chain with large single-ion anisotropy, a gapped phase occurs which is significantly different from the valence-bond-solid Haldane phase. The theoretical curves for the magnetization, susceptibility and specific heat are favourably compared with experimental data for a number of spin-1 chain compounds. For the spin-3/2 chain a degenerate gapped phase exists starting at zero external magnetic field. A middle magnetization plateau can be triggered by the single-ion anisotropy term. Overall, our results lend further weight to the applicability of integrable models to the physics of low-dimensional quantum spin systems. They also highlight the utility of the exact HTE method.

Abstract:According to Haldane's conjecture, there is a spin gap of the excitation spectrum in integer Heisenberg spin chains whereas half-integer spin chains have a gapless excitation spectrum. In an earlier publication (Hung and Gong 2005 Phys. Rev. B 71 054413), the Haldane gap and other properties of the spin-1 system are explained using a spin-1/2 alternating bond chain model. The ferromagnetic-ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain is expected to behave similarly to the uniform spin-3/2 Heisenberg chain for strong ferromagnetic coupling. And the general nonuniform spin-1/2 chain may be used to explain the properties of the integer and half-integer high spin-S chains, consistently. In this paper, we provide a detailed numerical verification for the above problems.

Abstract:The density-matrix renormalization-group technique is employed to show explicitly that S = 2 quantum spin chains belong to the same universality class as S = 1 spin chains. The dispersion of the single-magnon band for periodic chains is shown to be root Delta(2) + omega(q)(2), where Delta is the Haldane gap and omega(q) = upsilon\sin(pi-q)\ with upsilon = Delta xi, xi as the correlation length, pi-q = 2 pi n/L, L as the chain length, and n as an integer. Moreover, the existence of spin-1/2 topological excitations due to the breaking of one singlet bond is demonstrated by finite-size scaling of correlation functions decaying as exp(-r/xi)/root L. These stringent numerical tests, as well as the repulsive interactions between magnons, provide strong evidence in favor of the existence of a universality class for integer quantum spin chains conjectured by Haldane.

Abstract:We study the trigonometric quantum spin-Calogero-Sutherland model, and the Haldane-Shastry spin chain as a special case, using a Bethe-ansatz analysis. We harness the model's Yangian symmetry to import the standard tools of integrability for Heisenberg spin chains into the world of integrable long-range models with spins. From the transfer matrix with a diagonal twist we construct Heisenberg-style symmetries (Bethe algebra) that refine the usual hierarchy of commuting Hamiltonians (quantum determinant) of the spin-Calogero-Sutherland model. We compute the first few of these new conserved charges explicitly, and diagonalise them by Bethe ansatz inside each irreducible Yangian representation. This yields a new eigenbasis for the spin-Calogero-Sutherland model that generalises the Yangian Gelfand-Tsetlin basis of Takemura and Uglov. The Bethe-ansatz analysis involves non-generic values of the inhomogeneities. Our review of the inhomogeneous Heisenberg XXX chain, with special attention to how the Bethe ansatz works in the presence of fusion, may be of independent interest.

We show some subsectors are integrable and that with a relaxed constraint related to zigzag symmetry, the full spin chain is integrable in arbitrary dimensions.

Abstract:General spin-1/2 chains with symmetric nearest-neighbor interaction are studied. We rigorously prove that all spin models in this class, except for known integrable systems, are non-integrable in the sense that they possess no nontrivial local conserved quantities. This result confirms that there are no missing integrable systems, i.e., integrable systems in this class are exactly those that are already known. In addition, this result excludes the possibility of intermediate systems which have a finite number of nontrivial local conserved quantities. Our findings support the expectation that integrable systems are exceptional in quantum many-body systems and most systems are non-integrable.

Abstract:The Inozemtsev chain is an exactly solvable interpolation between the short-range Heisenberg and long-range Haldane-Shastry (HS) chains. In order to unlock its potential to study spin interactions with tunable interaction range using the powerful tools of integrability, the model's mathematical properties require better understanding. As a major step in this direction, we present a new generalisation of the Inozemtsev chain with spin symmetry reduced to U(1), interpolating between a Heisenberg xxz chain and the xxz-type HS chain, and integrable throughout. Underlying it is a new quantum many-body system that extends the elliptic Ruijsenaars system by including spins, contains the trigonometric spin-Ruijsenaars-Macdonald system as a special case, and yields our spin chain by 'freezing'. Our models have potential applications from condensed-matter to high-energy theory, and provide a crucial step towards a general theory for long-range integrability.

Abstract:We investigate the physical properties of $G_2$-symmetric integrable chains with local degrees of freedom in the fundamental representation; given the typical connection between integrability and critical points, we test the model's properties against a hypothesis of conformal-invariant long-distance behavior. Leveraging an embedding between the $G_2$ exceptional Lie algebra and $SU(2)$-symmetric chains with local spin-3 representations, we perform numerical analyses via exact diagonalization (ED) targeted at specific spin sectors, as well as via non-Abelian density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG). A basic study of the momentum-resolved ED spectrum suggests the low-energy system is effectively described by a $(G_2)_1$ Wess--Zumino--Witten (WZW) theory, but we find challenges in further numerical characterization of conformal data. The study and control of the phenomenology of this model may have implications for the development of accessible models for Fibonacci anyons.

Quantum Spin Chains and Symmetric Functions

Abstract:We consider the question of what quantum spin chains naturally encode in their Hilbert space. It turns out that quantum spin chains are rather rich systems, naturally encoding solutions to various problems in combinatorics, group theory, and algebraic geometry. In the case of the XX Heisenberg spin chain these are given by skew Kostka numbers, skew characters of the symmetric group, and Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. As we show, this is revealed by a fermionic representation of the theory of "quantized" symmetric functions formulated by Fomin and Greene, which provides a powerful framework for constructing operators extracting this data from the Hilbert space of quantum spin chains. Furthermore, these operators are diagonalized by the Bethe basis of the quantum spin chain. Underlying this is the fact that quantum spin chains are examples of "quantum integrable systems." This is somewhat analogous to bosons encoding permanents and fermions encoding determinants. This points towards considering quantum integrable systems, and the combinatorics associated with them, as potentially interesting targets for quantum computers.

Abstract:By using the concept of negativity, we study entanglement in spin-one Heisenberg chains. Both the bilinear chain and the bilinear-biquadratic chain are considered. Due to the SU(2) symmetry, the negativity can be determined by two correlators, which greatly facilitate the study of entanglement properties. Analytical results of negativity are obtained in the bilinear model up to four spins and the two-spin bilinear-biquadratic model, and numerical results of negativity are presented. We determine the threshold temperature before which the thermal state is doomed to be entangled.
Integrable models on Rydberg atom chains

Abstract:We initiate a systematic study of integrable models for spin chains with constrained Hilbert spaces; we focus on spin-1/2 chains with the Rydberg constraint. We extend earlier results for medium-range spin chains to the constrained Hilbert space, and formulate an integrability condition. This enables us to construct new integrable models with fixed interaction ranges. We classify all time- and space-reflection symmetric integrable Rydberg-constrained Hamiltonians of range 3 and 4. At range 3, we find a single family of integrable Hamiltonians: the so-called RSOS quantum chains, which are related to the well-known RSOS models of Andrews, Baxter, and Forrester. At range 4 we find two families of models, the first of which is the constrained XXZ model. We also find a new family of models depending on a single coupling $z$. We provide evidence of two critical points related to the golden ratio $\phi$, at $z=\phi^{-1/2}$ and $z=\phi^{3/2}$. We also perform a partial classification of integrable Hamiltonians for range 5.

Landscapes of integrable long-range spin chains

Abstract:We clarify how the elliptic integrable spin chain recently found by Matushko and Zotov (MZ) relates to various other known long-range spin chains. The limit $q\to1$ gives the elliptic spin chain of Sechin and Zotov (SZ), whose trigonometric case is due to Fukui and Kawakami. At finite size, only the latter is U(1)-symmetric. We compare the resulting (vertex-type) landscape of the MZ chain with the (face-type) landscape containing the Heisenberg XXX and Haldane--Shastry (HS) chains, as well as the Inozemtsev chain and its recent q-deformation. We find that the two landscapes only share a single point: the rational HS chain. Using wrapping we show that the SZ chain is the anti-periodic version of the Inozemtsev chain in a precise sense, and expand both chains around their nearest-neighbour limits to facilitate their interpretations as long-range deformations.

Thermodynamics and criticality of supersymmetric spin chains of Haldane-Shastry type

Abstract:We analyze the thermodynamics and criticality properties of four families of su$(m|n)$ supersymmetric spin chains of Haldane-Shastry (HS) type, related to both the $A_{N-1}$ and the $BC_N$ classical root systems. Using a known formula expressing the thermodynamic free energy per spin of these models in terms of the Perron (largest in modulus) eigenvalue of a suitable inhomogeneous transfer matrix, we prove a general result relating the su$(kp|kq)$ free energy with arbitrary $k=1,2,\dots$ to the su$(p|q)$ free energy. In this way we are able to evaluate the thermodynamic free energy per spin of several infinite families of supersymmetric HS-type chains, and study their thermodynamics. In particular, we show that in all cases the specific heat at constant volume features a single marked Schottky peak, which in some cases can be heuristically explained by approximating the model with a suitable multi-level system with equally spaced energies. We also study the critical behavior of the models under consideration, showing that the low-temperature behavior of their thermodynamic free energy per spin is the same as that of a $(1+1)$-dimensional conformal field theory with central charge $c=m+n/2-1$. However, using a motif-based description of the spectrum we prove that only the three families of su$(1|n)$ chains of type $A_{N-1}$ and the su$(m|n)$ HS chain of $BC_N$ type with $m=1,2,3$ (when the sign $\varepsilon_B$ in the Hamiltonian takes the value $-1$ in the latter case) are truly critical.

Promising regimes for the observation of topological degeneracy in spin chains

Abstract:Both the Haldane spin chain and a topologically dimerized chain feature topologically protected edge states that are expected to be robust against some kind of noise. To elucidate whether it might be feasible to create such edge states in dimerized chains in a controlled manner in solid states environments, e.g. as spin chains on surfaces, as has already been successfully achieved with the Haldane chain, we investigate their robustness with respect to long-range coupling, anisotropies and finite chain length. The theoretical investigation is based on an alternating Heisenberg spin chain with spin-1/2, which is investigated using exact diagonalization. We find that dimerized chains and Haldane chains have robustness against long-range coupling and anisotropies. In particular, dimerized spin chains are significantly more robust than Haldane chains

Abstract:Using results on topological line defects of 4D Chern-Simons theory and the algebra/cycle homology correspondence in complex surfaces $\mathcal{S}$ with ADE singularities, we study the graded properties of the $sl(m|n)$ chain and its embedding in string theory. Because of the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-grading of $ sl(m|n)$, we show that the $\left( m+n\right) !/m!n!$ varieties of superspin chains with underlying super geometries have different cycle homologies. We investigate the algebraic and homological features of these integrable quantum chains and give a link between graded 2-cycles and genus-g Rieman surfaces $\Sigma _{g}$. Moreover, using homology language, we yield the brane realisation of the $sl(m|n)$ chain in type IIA string and its uplift to M-theory. Other \textrm{aspects} like graded complex surfaces with $sl(m|n)$ singularity as well as super magnons are also described.

Abstract:We study integrable non-diagonal open boundary conditions for spin chains arising from holographic gauge theories. Their dual description is in terms of open strings stretching between giant gravitons intersecting at arbitrary angles inside spheres or projective spaces. By studying properties of their ground and low-lying states we reproduce the expected spectrum near the intersections. Unlike the case of intersecting D-branes in flat space, intersecting giant gravitons related by $SU(N)$ rotations do not always preserve an additional supersymmetry. We quantify this lack of enhancement by whether or not there exists a simple ferromagnetic ground state for the open spin chain.

From fermionic spin-Calogero-Sutherland models to the Haldane-Shastry chain by freezing

Abstract:The Haldane-Shastry spin chain has a myriad of remarkable properties, including Yangian symmetry and, for spin $1/2$, explicit highest-weight eigenvectors featuring (the case $\alpha = 1/2$ of) Jack polynomials. This stems from the spin-Calogero-Sutherland model, which reduces to Haldane-Shastry in a special `freezing' limit. In this work we clarify various points that, to the best of our knowledge, were missing in the literature. We have two main results. First, we show that freezing the $\mathit{fermionic}$ spin-1/2 Calogero-Sutherland model naturally accounts for the precise form of the Haldane-Shastry wave functions, including the Vandermonde factor squared. Second, we use the fermionic framework to prove the claim of Bernard-Gaudin-Haldane-Pasquier that the Yangian highest-weight eigenvectors of the $SU(r)$-version of the Haldane-Shastry chain arise by freezing $SU(r-1)$ spin-Calogero-Sutherland eigenvectors at $\alpha = 1/2$.

Abstract:As a generalisation of the correspondence linking 2D integrable systems with 4D Chern-Simons (CS) gauge theory, superspin chains are realized by means of crossing electric and magnetic super line defects in the 4D CS with super gauge symmetry. The oscillator realization of Lax operators solving the RLL relations of integrability is obtained in the gauge theory by extending the notion of Levi decomposition to Lie superalgebras. Based on particular 3-gradings of Lie superalgebras, we obtain graded oscillator Lax matrices for superspin chains with internal symmetries given by A ( m − 1 | n − 1), B ( m | n ), C ( n ) and D ( m | n ).
