Abstract:Let $F$ be a non Archimedean local field, and $G$ be the $F$-points of a connected quasi-split reductive group defined over $F$. In this note we propose a converse theorem statement for generic Langlands parameters of $G$ when the Langlands dual group of $G$ is acceptable. We then prove it when $G$ is $F$-split. Then we consider a variant which we prove for $G=\mathrm{G}_2(F)$ and all quasi-split classical groups. When $F$ has characteristic zero and assuming the validity of the Gross-Prasad and Rallis conjecture, this latter variant translates via the generic local Langlands correspondence of Jantzen and Liu, into the usual local converse theorems for classical groups expressed in terms of Shahidi's gamma factors.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the local converse theorem and the stability of local gamma factors for $\Mp_{2n}$ via the precise local theta correspondence between $\Mp_{2n}$ and $\SO_{2n+1}$ over local fields of characteristic not equal to 2. As an application, we can prove the rigidity theorem for irreducible generic cuspidal automorphic representations of $\Mp_{2n}$ over number fields.

Abstract:This paper verifies $n\times 1$ Local Converse Theorem for twisted gamma factors of irreducible cuspidal representations of ${\rm GL}_n({\mathbb F}_p)$, for $n\leq 5,$ and of irreducible generic representations, for $n<\frac{q-1}{2\sqrt{q}}+1$ in the appendix by Zhiwei Yun, where $p$ is a prime and q is a power of $p$. The counterpart of $n\times 1$ converse theorem for level zero cuspidal representations also follows the established relation between gamma factors of ${\rm GL}_n({\mathcal F})$ and that of ${\rm GL}_n({\mathbb F}_q)$, where ${\mathcal F}$ denotes a $p$-adic field whose residue field is isomorphic to ${\mathbb F}_q.$ For $n=6,$ examples failed $n\times 1$ Local Converse Theorem over finite fields are provided and the authors propose a set of primitive representations, for which $n\times 1$ gamma factors should be able to detect a unique element in it. For $m, n\in {\mathbb N},$ in the spirit of Langlands functorial lifting, we formulate a conjecture to relate $n\times m$ gamma factors of finite fields with Gauss sums over extended fields.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of characteristic different from $2$ and $G$ be either an odd special orthogonal group ${\rm SO}_{2r+1}(F)$ or a symplectic group ${\rm Sp}_{2r}(F)$. In this paper, we establish the local converse theorem for $G$. Namely, for given two irreducible admissible generic representations of $G$ with the same central character, if they have the same local gamma factors twisted by irreducible supercuspidal representations of ${\rm GL}_n(F)$ for all $1 \leq n \leq r$ with the same additive character, these representations are isomorphic. Using the theory of Cogdell, Shahidi, and Tsai on partial Bessel functions and the classification of irreducible generic representations, we break the barrier on the rank of twists $1 \leq n \leq 2r-1$ in the work of Jiang and Soudry, and extend the result of Q. Zhang, which was achieved for all supercuspidal representations in characteristic $0$.

Abstract:We prove a descent criterion for certain families of smooth representations of GL_n(F) (F a p-adic field) in terms of the gamma factors of pairs constructed in previous work of the second author. We then use this descent criterion, together with a theory of gamma factors for families of representations of the Weil group W_F (developed previously by both authors), to prove a series of conjectures, due to the first author, that give a complete description of the integral Bernstein center in terms of Galois theory and the local Langlands correspondence. An immediate consequence is the conjectural "local Langlands correspondence in families" of Emerton and Helm.

Abstract:Let $E/F$ be a non Archimedean local field and $\psi:\frac{E}{F}\to \mathbb{C}$ a non trivial character. Using harmonic analysis on Harish-Chandra Schwartz spaces, we prove that if $n$ is an integer at least equal to two and $\pi$ is a square integrable representation of $GL_n(E)$ such that $\gamma(\pi,\pi',\psi)=1$ for any $GL_{n-1}(F)$-distinguished tempered representation $\pi'$ of $GL_{n-1}(E)$, then $\pi$ is $GL_n(F)$-distinguished.

On a refined local converse theorem for SO(4)

Abstract:Recently, Hazeltine-Liu, and independently Haan-Kim-Kwon, proved a local converse theorem for $\mathrm{SO}_{2n}(F)$ over a $p$-adic field $F$, which says that, up to an outer automorphism of $\mathrm{SO}_{2n}(F)$, an irreducible generic representation of $\mathrm{SO}_{2n}(F)$ is uniquely determined by its twisted gamma factors by generic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_k(F)$ for $k=1,\dots,n$. It is desirable to remove the ``up to an outer automorphism" part in the above theorem using more twisted gamma factors, but this seems a hard problem. In this paper, we provide a solution to this problem for the group $\mathrm{SO}_4(F)$, namely, we show that a generic supercuspidal representation $\pi$ of $\mathrm{SO}_4(F)$ is uniquely determined by its $\mathrm{GL}_1$, $\mathrm{GL}_2$ twisted local gamma factors and a twisted exterior square local gamma factor of $\pi$.

Abstract:Let G be one of the classical groups GL(n), U(n), O(n) or Sp(2n), over a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero. It is well known that the contragredient of an irreducible admissible smooth representation of G is isomorphic to a twist of it by an automorphism of G. We prove that similar results hold for double covers of G that occur in the study of local theta correspondences.

Abstract:Let $\mathrm{F}$ be a local non-archimedean field of residue characteristic $p$ and $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_\ell$ an algebraic closure of a finite field of characteristic $\ell \neq p$. We extend the results of Lapid and Mínguez concerning $\square$-irreducible representations of inner forms of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathrm{F})$ to representations over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_\ell$. As applications, we compute the Godement-Jacquet $L$-factor for any smooth irreducible representation over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_\ell$ and show that the local factors of a representation agree with the ones of its $\mathrm{C}$-parameter defined by Kurinczuk and Matringe. Moreover, we reprove that the classification of irreducible representations via multisegments due to Vignéras and Mínguez-Sécherre is indeed exhaustive without using the classification of Ariki and Mathas of simple modules of Hecke algebras. Finally, we characterize the irreducible constituents of certain parabolically induced representations, as was already done by Zelevinsky over $\mathbb{C}$.

Abstract:We prove that a Dirichlet series with a functional equation and Euler product of a particular form can only arise from a holomorphic cusp form on the Hecke congruence group $\Gamma_0(13)$. The proof does not assume a functional equation for the twists of the Dirichlet series. The main new ingredient is a generalization of the familiar Weil's lemma that played a prominent role in previous converse theorems.

Abstract:For $q$ a power of a prime $p$, we study gamma factors of representations of $GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of positive characteristic $\ell \neq p$. We show that the reduction mod $\ell$ of the gamma factor defined in characteristic zero fails to satisfy the analogue of the local converse theorem of Piatetski-Shapiro. To remedy this, we construct gamma factors valued in arbitrary $\mathbb{Z}[1/p, \zeta_p]$-algebras $A$, where $\zeta_p$ is a primitive $p$-th root of unity, for Whittaker-type representations $\rho$ and $\pi$ of $GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ and $GL_m(\mathbb{F}_q)$ over $A$. We let $P(\pi)$ be the projective envelope of $\pi$ and let $R(\pi)$ be its endomorphism ring and define new gamma factors $\widetilde\gamma(\rho \times \pi) = \gamma((\rho\otimes_kR(\pi)) \times P(\pi))$, which take values in the local Artinian $k$-algebra $R(\pi)$. We prove a converse theorem for cuspidal representations using the new gamma factors. When $n=2$ and $m=1$ we construct a different ``new'' gamma factor $\gamma^{\ell}(\rho,\pi)$, which takes values in $k$ and satisfies a converse theorem.

Abstract:Let G be a higher rank semisimple linear algebraic group over a non-Archimedean local field. The simplicial complexes corresponding to any sequence of pairwise non-conjugate irreducible lattices in G are Benjamini–Schramm convergent to the Bruhat–Tits building. Convergence of the relative Plancherel measures and normalized Betti numbers follows. This extends the work (Abert et al. in Ann Math 185(3):711–790, 2017) from real Lie groups to linear groups over arbitrary local fields. Along the way, various results concerning Invariant Random Subgroups and in particular a variant of the classical Borel density theorem are also extended.

Abstract:Let $F$ be an archimedean local field and let $E$ be $F\times F$ (resp. a quadratic extension of $F$). We prove that an irreducible generic (resp. nearly tempered) representation of $\operatorname{GL}_n(E)$ is $\operatorname{GL}_n(F)$ distinguished if and only if its Rankin-Selberg (resp. Asai) $L$-function has an exceptional pole of level zero at $0$. Further, we deduce a necessary condition for the ramification of such representations using the theory of weak test vectors developed by Humphries and Jo.

On local intertwining periods

Abstract:We prove the absolute convergence, functional equations and meromorphic continuation of local intertwining periods on parabolically induced representations of finite length for certain symmetric spaces over local fields of characteristic zero, including Galois pairs as well as pairs of Prasad and Takloo-Bighash type. Furthermore, for a general symmetric space we prove a sufficient condition for distinction of an induced representation in terms of distinction of its inducing data. Both results generalize previous results of the first two named authors. In particular, for both we remove a boundedness assumption on the inducing data and for the second we further remove any assumption on the symmetric space. Moreover, when the inducing representation is uniformly bounded, we extend the field of cofficients from p-adic to any local field of characteristic zero. In fact this extension holds for all finite length representations under a natural generic irreducibility assumption for parabolic induction. In the case of p-adic symmetric spaces, combined with the necessary conditions for distinction that follow from the geometric lemma, this provides a necessary and sufficient condition for distinction of representations induced from cuspidal.

Abstract:It is conjectured by Adams-Vogan and Prasad that under the local Langlands correspondence, the L-parameter of the contragredient representation equals that of the original representation composed with the Chevalley involution of the L-group. We verify a variant of their prediction for all connected reductive groups over local fields of positive characteristic, in terms of the local Langlands parameterization of Genestier-Lafforgue. We deduce this from a global result for cuspidal automorphic representations over function fields, which is in turn based on a description of the transposes of V. Lafforgue's excursion operators.

Abstract:Let E/F be a quadratic extension of non-archimedean local fields of characteristic 0. In this paper, we investigate two approaches which attempt to describe the smooth irreducible representations of GL(n,E) that are distinguished by its subgroup GL(n,F). One relates this class to representations which come as base change lifts from a quasi-split unitary group F, while another deals with a certain symmetry condition. By characterizing the union of images of the base change maps we show that these two approaches are closely related. Using this observation, we are able to prove a statement relating base change and distinction for ladder representations. We then produce a wide family of examples in which the symmetry condition does not impose GL(n,F)-distinction, and thus exhibit the limitations of these two approaches.
