Abstract:Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field with odd characteristic $p$. Let $N$ be a positive integer and $G=Sp_{2N}(F)$. By work of Lomelí on $\gamma$-factors of pairs and converse theorems, a generic supercuspidal representation $\pi$ of $G$ has a transfer to a smooth irreducible representation $\Pi_\pi$ of $GL_{2N+1}(F)$. In turn the Weil-Deligne representation $\Sigma_\pi$ associated to $\Pi_\pi$ by the Langlands correspondence determines a Langlands parameter $\phi_\pi$ for $\pi$. That process produces a Langlands correspondence for generic cuspidal representations of $G$. In this paper we take $\pi$ to be simple in the sense of Gross and Reeder, and from the explicit construction of $\pi$ we describe $\Pi_\pi$ explicitly. The method we use is the same as in our previous paper <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2310.20455" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2310.20455">arXiv:2310.20455</a>, where we treated the case where $F$ is a $p$-adic field, and $\pi$ a simple supercuspidal representation of $G=Sp_{2N}(F)$. It relies on a criterion due to Moeglin on the reducibility of representations parabolically induced from $GL_M(F)\times G$ for varying positive integers $M$. We extend this criterion to the case when $F$ has any positive characteristic. The main new feature consists in relating reducibility to $\gamma$-factors for pairs.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a non Archimedean local field, and $G$ be the $F$-points of a connected quasi-split reductive group defined over $F$. In this note we propose a converse theorem statement for generic Langlands parameters of $G$ when the Langlands dual group of $G$ is acceptable. We then prove it when $G$ is $F$-split. Then we consider a variant which we prove for $G=\mathrm{G}_2(F)$ and all quasi-split classical groups. When $F$ has characteristic zero and assuming the validity of the Gross-Prasad and Rallis conjecture, this latter variant translates via the generic local Langlands correspondence of Jantzen and Liu, into the usual local converse theorems for classical groups expressed in terms of Shahidi's gamma factors.

Abstract:This paper investigates Galois branched covers of the open $p$-adic disc and their reductions to characteristic $p$. Using the field of norms functor of Fontaine and Wintenberger, we show that the special fiber of a Galois cover is determined by arithmetic and geometric properties of the generic fiber and its characteristic zero specializations. As applications, we derive a criterion for good reduction in the abelian case, and give an arithmetic reformulation of the local Oort Conjecture concerning the liftability of cyclic covers of germs of curves.

Abstract:Let $p>3$ and $F$ be a non-archimedean local field with residue field a proper finite extension of $\mathbb{F}_p$. We construct smooth absolutely irreducible non-admissible representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(F)$ defined over the residue field of $F$ extending the earlier results of the authors for $F$ unramified over $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$. This construction uses the theory of diagrams of Breuil and Paskunas. By parabolic induction, we obtain smooth absolutely irreducible non-admissible representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$ for $n>2$.

Abstract:We prove the absolute convergence, functional equations and meromorphic continuation of local intertwining periods on parabolically induced representations of finite length for certain symmetric spaces over local fields of characteristic zero, including Galois pairs as well as pairs of Prasad and Takloo-Bighash type. Furthermore, for a general symmetric space we prove a sufficient condition for distinction of an induced representation in terms of distinction of its inducing data. Both results generalize previous results of the first two named authors. In particular, for both we remove a boundedness assumption on the inducing data and for the second we further remove any assumption on the symmetric space. Moreover, when the inducing representation is uniformly bounded, we extend the field of cofficients from p-adic to any local field of characteristic zero. In fact this extension holds for all finite length representations under a natural generic irreducibility assumption for parabolic induction. In the case of p-adic symmetric spaces, combined with the necessary conditions for distinction that follow from the geometric lemma, this provides a necessary and sufficient condition for distinction of representations induced from cuspidal.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the local converse theorem and the stability of local gamma factors for $\Mp_{2n}$ via the precise local theta correspondence between $\Mp_{2n}$ and $\SO_{2n+1}$ over local fields of characteristic not equal to 2. As an application, we can prove the rigidity theorem for irreducible generic cuspidal automorphic representations of $\Mp_{2n}$ over number fields.

Abstract:In this note we prove (under mild hypotheses) that $f$ is a nontrivial character of $\mathbb{F}_p$ if and only if the Fourier transform of $f$ has magnitude 1 somewhere in $\mathbb{F}_p^\times$. This implies a converse to a theorem of Gauss on the magnitude of the Gauss sum, in addition to other consequences.

Abstract:We study the p-adic analogue of the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad (GGP) conjectures for unitary groups. Let $\Pi$ be a hermitian cuspidal automorphic representation of GL_{n} x GL_{n+1} over a CM field, which is algebraic of minimal regular weight at infinity. We first show the rationality of twists of the ratio of L-values of $\Pi$ appearing in the GGP conjectures. Then, when $\Pi$ is p-ordinary at a prime p, we construct a cyclotomic p-adic L-function $L_p(M_\Pi)$ interpolating those twists. Finally, under some local assumptions, we prove a precise formula relating the first derivative of $L_p(M_\Pi)$ to the p-adic heights of Selmer classes arising from arithmetic diagonal cycles on unitary Shimura varieties. We deduce applications to the p-adic Beilinson-Bloch-Kato conjecture for the motive attached to $\Pi$. All proofs are based on some relative-trace formulas in p-adic coefficients.

Abstract:This paper verifies $n\times 1$ Local Converse Theorem for twisted gamma factors of irreducible cuspidal representations of ${\rm GL}_n({\mathbb F}_p)$, for $n\leq 5,$ and of irreducible generic representations, for $n<\frac{q-1}{2\sqrt{q}}+1$ in the appendix by Zhiwei Yun, where $p$ is a prime and q is a power of $p$. The counterpart of $n\times 1$ converse theorem for level zero cuspidal representations also follows the established relation between gamma factors of ${\rm GL}_n({\mathcal F})$ and that of ${\rm GL}_n({\mathbb F}_q)$, where ${\mathcal F}$ denotes a $p$-adic field whose residue field is isomorphic to ${\mathbb F}_q.$ For $n=6,$ examples failed $n\times 1$ Local Converse Theorem over finite fields are provided and the authors propose a set of primitive representations, for which $n\times 1$ gamma factors should be able to detect a unique element in it. For $m, n\in {\mathbb N},$ in the spirit of Langlands functorial lifting, we formulate a conjecture to relate $n\times m$ gamma factors of finite fields with Gauss sums over extended fields.

Abstract:We prove that the reduction mod \ell of the local Langlands correspondence between supercuspidal representations of GL_n(F), where F is a finite extension of Q_p, and representations of the Galois group of F is well-defined. The results and methods of this paper have been used by Vigneras to give a proof of the ``local Langlands conjecture mod \ell'', that was proved earlier by her by different methods (local harmonic analysis mod \ell) for \ell>n. Unlike the local methods used earlier by Vigneras, our more global method also generalises well to the characteristic p case.

Abstract:Consider a smooth projective curve C of genus g over a complete discrete valuation field of characteristic 0 and residue field \Fbar_p. Motivated by Narasimhan and Seshadri's theorem, Faltings asked whether all semistable vector bundles of degree 0 over C_{\C_p} are in the image of the p-adic Simpson correspondence. Works of Deninger-Werner and Xu show that this is equivalent for the vector bundle to having potentially strongly semistable reduction. We prove that if C has good reduction, p>r(r-1) (g-1) and we consider a vector bundle of rank r with stable reduction, the conditions of having potentially strongly semistable reduction and of having strongly semistable reduction are equivalent. In particular, we provide a negative answer to Faltings' question

Abstract:We prove a descent criterion for certain families of smooth representations of GL_n(F) (F a p-adic field) in terms of the gamma factors of pairs constructed in previous work of the second author. We then use this descent criterion, together with a theory of gamma factors for families of representations of the Weil group W_F (developed previously by both authors), to prove a series of conjectures, due to the first author, that give a complete description of the integral Bernstein center in terms of Galois theory and the local Langlands correspondence. An immediate consequence is the conjectural "local Langlands correspondence in families" of Emerton and Helm.

Using harmonic analysis on Harish-Chandra Schwartz spaces, we prove that if $n$ is an integer at least equal to two and $\pi$ is a square integrable representation of $GL_n(E)$ such that $\gamma(\pi,\pi',\psi)=1$ for any $GL_{n-1}(F)$-distinguished tempered representation $\pi'$ of $GL_{n-1}(E)$, then $\pi$ is $GL_n(F)$-distinguished.

Abstract:We develop generalized Petersson/Bruggeman/Kuznetsov (PBK) formulas for specified local components at non-archimedean places. In fact, we introduce two hypotheses on non-archimedean test function pairs $f \leftrightarrow \pi(f)$, called geometric and spectral hypotheses, under which one obtains `nice' PBK formulas by the adelic relative trace function approach. Then, given a supercuspidal representation $\sigma$ of ${\rm PGL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$, we study extensively the case that $\pi(f)$ is a projection onto the line of the newform if $\pi$ is isomorphc to $\sigma$ or its unramified quadratic twist, and $\pi(f) = 0$ otherwise. As a first application, we prove an optimal large sieve inequality for families of automorphic representations that arise in our framework.

On the cohomology of p-adic analytic spaces, II: The $C_{\rm st}$-conjecture

Abstract:Long ago, Fontaine formulated conjectures (now theorems) relating étale and de Rham cohomologies of algebraic varieties over $p$-adic fields. In an earlier work we have shown that pro-étale and de Rham cohomologies of analytic varieties in the two extreme cases: proper and Stein, are also related. In the proper case, the comparison theorems are similar to those for algebraic varieties, but for Stein varieties they are quite different. In this paper, we state analogs of Fontaine's conjectures for general smooth dagger varieties, that interpolate between these two extreme cases, and we prove them for many ``small'' varieties (cases we deal with include products of overconvergent affinoids and proper varieties, analytifications of algebraic varieties, or "almost proper" dagger varieties). The proofs use a ``geometrization'' of all involved cohomologies in terms of quasi-Banach-Colmez spaces (qBC's for short, quasi- because we relax the finiteness conditions). The heart of the proof relies on delicate properties of BC's and qBC's. These properties should be of independent interest and we have devoted a large part of the paper to them.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth curve over a finitely generated field $k$, and let $\ell$ be a prime different from the characteristic of $k$. We analyze the dynamics of the Galois action on the deformation rings of mod $\ell$ representations of the geometric fundamental group of $X$. Using this analysis, we prove analogues of the Shafarevich and Fontaine-Mazur finiteness conjectures for function fields over algebraically closed fields in arbitrary characteristic, and a weak variant of the Frey-Mazur conjecture for function fields in characteristic zero. For example, we show that if $X$ is a normal, connected variety over $\mathbb{C}$, the (typically infinite) set of representations of $\pi_1(X^{\text{an}})$ into $GL_n(\overline{\mathbb{Q}_\ell})$, which come from geometry, has no limit points. As a corollary, we deduce that if $L$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_\ell$, then the set of representations of $\pi_1(X^{\text{an}})$ into $GL_n(L)$, which arise from geometry, is finite.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and explore a new connection in the study of $p$-adic $L$-functions and eigenvarieties. We use it to prove results on the geometry of the cuspidal eigenvariety for $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}$ over a totally real number field $F$ at classical points admitting Shalika models. We also construct $p$-adic $L$-functions over the eigenvariety around these points. Our proofs proceed in the opposite direction to established methods: rather than using the geometry of eigenvarieties to deduce results about $p$-adic $L$-functions, we instead show that non-vanishing of a (standard) $p$-adic $L$-function implies smoothness of the eigenvariety at such points. Key to our methods are a family of distribution-valued functionals on (parahoric) overconvergent cohomology groups, which we construct via $p$-adic interpolation of classical representation-theoretic branching laws for $\mathrm{GL}_n \times \mathrm{GL}_n \subset \mathrm{GL}_{2n}$. More precisely, we use our functionals to attach a $p$-adic $L$-function to a non-critical refinement $\tilde\pi$ of a regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representation $\pi$ of $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}/F$ which is spherical at $p$ and admits a Shalika model. Our new parahoric distribution coefficients allow us to obtain optimal non-critical slope and growth bounds for this construction. When $\pi$ has regular weight and the corresponding $p$-adic Galois representation is irreducible, we exploit non-vanishing of our functionals to show that the parabolic eigenvariety for $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}/F$ is étale at $\tilde\pi$ over an $([F:\mathbb{Q}]+1)$-dimensional weight space and contains a dense set of classical points admitting Shalika models. Under a hypothesis on the local Shalika models at bad places which is empty for $\pi$ of level 1, we construct a $p$-adic $L$-function for the family.
