Abstract:In this note, we improve Nikulin's inequality in the case of right-angled hyperbolic polyhedra. The new inequality allows to give much shorter proofs of the known dimension bounds. We also improve Nonaka's lower bound on the number of ideal vertices for right-angled hyperbolic polyhedra.

Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 such that a Weingarten curvature, regarded as a function of their unit normal, is equal to a given positive function on the unit sphere Sn. Two classical problems of this type, namely the Christoffel problem [6] and the Minkowski problem [16], which address respectively the cases of harmonic and Gauss curvature, were completely solved in the 1970’s [7,9,17]. Besides the harmonic and Gauss curvatures, the most interesting Weingarten curvatures are probably the mean curvature, or more generally the k-curvatures (1 ≤ k ≤ n)
Upper bounds for volumes of generalized hyperbolic polyhedra and hyperbolic links

Abstract:A polyhedron in a three-dimensional hyperbolic space is said to be generalized if finite, ideal and truncated vertices are admitted. In virtue of Belletti's theorem (2021) the exact upper bound for volumes of generalized hyperbolic polyhedra with the same one-dimensional skeleton $G$ is equal to the volume of an ideal right-angled hyperbolic polyhedron whose one-dimensional skeleton is the medial graph for $G$. In the present paper we give the upper bounds for the volume of an arbitrary generalized hyperbolic polyhedron, where the bonds linearly depend on the number of edges. Moreover, it is shown that the bounds can be improved if the polyhedron has triangular faces and trivalent vertices. As an application there are obtained new upper bounds for the volume of the complement to the hyperbolic link having more than eight twists in a diagram.

Abstract:We prove that among four-dimensional ideal right-angled hyperbolic polytopes the 24-cell is of minimal volume and of minimal facet number. As a corollary, a dimension bound for ideal right-angled hyperbolic polytopes is obtained.

Abstract:We study a more general version of the hybrid construction of Gromov and Piatetski--Shapiro, where the building blocks are no longer assumed to be arithmetic. We show that if such a general hyberbolic hybrid of dimension $\geqslant 3$ is quasi-arithmetic (a notion which is a broader notion than that of arithmeticity) then each building block must be quasi-arithmetic as well and, moreover, must with the same ambient group and adjoint trace field. On the other hand, we provide an example of a nonarithmetic but quasi-arithmetic orbifold such that a specific gluing of this orbifold with itself along the boundary gives rise to an arithmetic hyperbolic orbifold. We also note that if the building blocks are incommensurable, then the hybrid is not arithmetic. Together with the above, this implies that if a hyperbolic hybrid is arithmetic, then it is glued from commensurable quasi-arithmetic blocks. We illustrate the above results in the setting of reflection groups and hyperbolic Coxeter polyhedra and apply them to rule out the (quasi-)arithmeticity of a family of ideal hyperbolic right-angled $3$-polyhedra, namely, certain ``twisted'' ideal right-angled antiprisms.

Abstract:We consider a conjecture made by Ge, Wang and Wu regarding weighted Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities for horospherically convex hypersurfaces in hyperbolic space (a bound, for some physically motivated weight function, of the weighted integral of the $k^{\mathrm{th}}$ mean curvature in terms of the area of the hypersurface). We prove an inequality very similar to the conjectured one. Moreover, when $k$ is zero and the ambient space has dimension three, we give a counterexample to the conjectured inequality.

Hyperplanes Avoiding Problem and Integer Points Counting in Polyhedra

Abstract:In our work, we consider the problem of computing a vector $x \in Z^n$ of minimum $\|\cdot\|_p$-norm such that $a^\top x \not= a_0$, for any vector $(a,a_0)$ from a given subset of $Z^n$ of size $m$. In other words, we search for a vector of minimum norm that avoids a given finite set of hyperplanes, which is natural to call as the $\textit{Hyperplanes Avoiding Problem}$. This problem naturally appears as a subproblem in Barvinok-type algorithms for counting integer points in polyhedra. More precisely, it appears when one needs to evaluate certain rational generating functions in an avoidable critical point. We show that: 1) With respect to $\|\cdot\|_1$, the problem admits a feasible solution $x$ with $\|x\|_1 \leq (m+n)/2$, and show that such solution can be constructed by a deterministic polynomial-time algorithm with $O(n \cdot m)$ operations. Moreover, this inequality is the best possible. This is a significant improvement over the previous randomized algorithm, which computes $x$ with a guaranty $\|x\|_{1} \leq n \cdot m$. The original approach of A.~Barvinok can guarantee only $\|x\|_1 = O\bigl((n \cdot m)^n\bigr)$; 2) The problem is NP-hard with respect to any norm $\|\cdot\|_p$, for $p \in \bigl(R_{\geq 1} \cup \{\infty\}\bigr)$. 3) As an application, we show that the problem to count integer points in a polytope $P = \{x \in R^n \colon A x \leq b\}$, for given $A \in Z^{m \times n}$ and $b \in Q^m$, can be solved by an algorithm with $O\bigl(\nu^2 \cdot n^3 \cdot \Delta^3 \bigr)$ operations, where $\nu$ is the maximum size of a normal fan triangulation of $P$, and $\Delta$ is the maximum value of rank-order subdeterminants of $A$. It refines the previous state-of-the-art $O\bigl(\nu^2 \cdot n^4 \cdot \Delta^3\bigr)$-time algorithm.

As applications, we prove an Alexandrov-type theorem for closed embedded hypersurfaces with constant shifted k th mean curvature in hyperbolic space. Furthermore, two uniqueness results for certain curvature equations are also obtained.

Abstract:In this article, we will use inverse mean curvature flow to establish an optimal Sobolev-type inequality for hypersurfaces $$\Sigma $$ with nonnegative sectional curvature in $$\mathbb {H}^n$$ . As an application, we prove the hyperbolic Alexandrov–Fenchel inequalities for hypersurfaces with nonnegative sectional curvature in $$\mathbb {H}^n$$ : $$\begin{aligned} \int _{\Sigma } p_{2k}\ge \omega _{n-1}\left[ \left( \frac{|\Sigma |}{\omega _{n-1}}\right) ^\frac{1}{k} +\left( \frac{|\Sigma |}{\omega _{n-1}}\right) ^{\frac{1}{k}\frac{n-1-2k}{n-1}}\right] ^k, \end{aligned}$$ where $$p_i$$ is the normalized i-th mean curvature. (J Differ Geom 98:237–260, 2014) under the stronger condition that $$\Sigma $$ is horospherical convex.

On Zarankiewicz's Problem for Intersection Hypergraphs of Geometric Objects

Abstract:The hypergraph Zarankiewicz's problem, introduced by Erdős in 1964, asks for the maximum number of hyperedges in an $r$-partite hypergraph with $n$ vertices in each part that does not contain a copy of $K_{t,t,\ldots,t}$. Erdős obtained a near optimal bound of $O(n^{r-1/t^{r-1}})$ for general hypergraphs. In recent years, several works obtained improved bounds under various algebraic assumptions -- e.g., if the hypergraph is semialgebraic. In this paper we study the problem in a geometric setting -- for $r$-partite intersection hypergraphs of families of geometric objects. Our main results are essentially sharp bounds for families of axis-parallel boxes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and families of pseudo-discs. For axis-parallel boxes, we obtain the sharp bound $O_{d,t}(n^{r-1}(\frac{\log n}{\log \log n})^{d-1})$. The best previous bound was larger by a factor of about $(\log n)^{d(2^{r-1}-2)}$. For pseudo-discs, we obtain the bound $O_t(n^{r-1}(\log n)^{r-2})$, which is sharp up to logarithmic factors. As this hypergraph has no algebraic structure, no improvement of Erdős' 60-year-old $O(n^{r-1/t^{r-1}})$ bound was known for this setting. Futhermore, even in the special case of discs for which the semialgebraic structure can be used, our result improves the best known result by a factor of $\tilde{\Omega}(n^{\frac{2r-2}{3r-2}})$. To obtain our results, we use the recently improved results for the graph Zarankiewicz's problem in the corresponding settings, along with a variety of combinatorial and geometric techniques, including shallow cuttings, biclique covers, transversals, and planarity.

On Stable Rationality of Polytopes

Abstract:Nicaise--Ottem introduced the notion of (stably) rational polytopes and studied this using a combinatorial description of the motivic volume. In this framework, we ask whether being non-stably rational is preserved under inclusions. We prove this holds for a large class of polytopes, leading to a combinatorial strategy for studying stable rationality of hypersurfaces in toric varieties. As a result, we obtain new bounds for non-stably rational hypersurface in projective space, improving the ones given by Schreieder when the field has characteristic 0. We also obtain similar bounds for double covers of projective space and some new classes of non-stably rational varieties in products of projective space.

Abstract:Because of its importance in number theory and singularity theory, the problem of finding a polynomial sharp upper estimate of the number of positive integral points in an n-dimensional (n≥3) polyhedron has received attention by a lot of mathematicians. The first named author proposed the Number Theoretic Conjecture for the upper estimate. The previous results on the Number Theoretic Conjecture in low dimension cases (n<7) are proved by using the sharp GLY conjecture which is true only for low dimensional case. Thus the proof cannot be generalized to high dimension. In this paper, we offer a uniform approach to prove the Number Theoretic Conjecture for all dimensions by simply using the induction method and the Yau–Zhang [19] estimates (see Lemma 2.3, Lemma 2.4, Lemma 2.5). As a result, the Number Theoretic Conjecture is proven for n=7. An important estimate for all dimensions is also obtained (Proposition 3.1, Proposition 3.2) which will be useful to prove the general case of the Number Theoretic Conjecture. As an application, we give a sharper estimate of the Dickman–De Bruijn function ψ(x,y) for 5≤y<19, compared with the result obtained by Ennola.
Non-hyperbolicity of holomorphic symplectic varieties

Abstract:We prove non-hyperbolicity of primitive symplectic varieties with $b_2 \geq 5$ that satisfy the rational SYZ conjecture. If in addition $b_2 \geq 7$, we establish that the Kobayashi pseudometric vanishes identically. This in particular applies to all currently known examples of irreducible symplectic manifolds and thereby completes the results by Kamenova--Lu--Verbitsky. The key new contribution is that a projective primitive symplectic variety with a Lagrangian fibration has vanishing Kobayashi pseudometric. The proof uses ergodicity, birational contractions, and cycle spaces.
