Abstract:We present three simple algorithms to uniformly generate `Fibonacci words' (i.e., some words that are enumerated by Fibonacci numbers), Schr{ö}der trees of size $n$ and Motzkin left factors of size $n$ and final height $h$. These algorithms have an average complexity of $O(n)$ in the unit-cost RAM model.

Abstract:Holonomic equations are recursive equations which allow computing efficiently numbers of combinatoric objects. R{é}my showed that the holonomic equation associated with binary trees yields an efficient linear random generator of binary trees. I extend this paradigm to Motzkin trees and Schr{ö}der trees and show that despite slight differences my algorithm that generates random Schr{ö}der trees has linear expected complexity and my algorithm that generates Motzkin trees is in O(n) expected complexity, only if we can implement a specific oracle with a O(1) complexity. For Motzkin trees, I propose a solution which works well for realistic values (up to size ten millions) and yields an efficient algorithm.

Towards a practical, theoretically sound algorithm for random generation in finite groups

Abstract:This work presents a new, simple O(log^2|G|) algorithm, the Fibonacci cube algorithm, for producing random group elements in black box groups. After the initial O(log^2|G|) group operations, epsilon-uniform random elements are produced using O((log 1/epsilon)log|G|) operations each. This is the first major advance over the ten year old result of Babai [Babai91], which had required O(log^5|G|) group operations. Preliminary experimental results show the Fibonacci cube algorithm to be competitive with the product replacement algorithm. The new result leads to an amusing reversal of the state of affairs for permutation group algorithms. In the past, the fastest random generation for permutation groups was achieved as an application of permutation group membership algorithms and used deep knowledge about permutation representations. The new black box random generation algorithm is also valid for permutation groups, while using no knowledge that is specific to permutation representations. As an application, we demonstrate a new algorithm for permutation group membership that is asymptotically faster than all previously known algorithms.

Abstract:The Fibonacci word F is the fixed point beginning with a of morphism σ(a)=ab and σ(b)=a. Since F is uniformly recurrent, each factor ω appears infinitely many times in the sequence which is arranged as ωp (the pth occurrence of ω, p≥1). Here we distinguish ωp≠ωq if p≠q. In this paper, we give an algorithm for counting the number of repeated palindromes in F[1,n] (the prefix of F of length n). That is the number of the pairs (ω,p), where ω is a palindrome and ωp≺F[1,n]. We also get explicit expressions for some special n such as n=fm (the mth Fibonacci number). Similar results are also given for the Tribonacci word, the fixed point beginning with a of morphism τ(a)=ab, τ(b)=ac and τ(c)=a.

Abstract:Given an infinite word, enumerating its factors is an important exercise for understanding the structure of the word. The process of finding all the factors is quite tricky for two-dimensional words. In this paper, two possible ways of enumerating the factors of the fixed point ($f_{\infty,\infty}$) of the sequence of Fibonacci arrays and a method for locating these factors in $f_{\infty,\infty}$ are explored. In addition, the factor complexity and the locations of the factors of the fixed point of Fibonacci sequence of arrays are also analysed.

Abstract:This article introduces an algorithm to draw random discrete uniform variables within a given range of size n from a source of random bits. The algorithm aims to be simple to implement and optimal both with regards to the amount of random bits consumed, and from a computational perspective---allowing for faster and more efficient Monte-Carlo simulations in computational physics and biology. I also provide a detailed analysis of the number of bits that are spent per variate, and offer some extensions and applications, in particular to the optimal random generation of permutations.

Abstract:We obtain new non-asymptotic tail bounds for the height of uniformly random trees with a given degree sequence, simply generated trees and conditioned Bienaym\'e trees (the family trees of branching processes), in the process settling three conjectures of Janson (2012) and answering several other questions from the literature. Moreover, we define a partial ordering on degree sequences and show that it induces a stochastic ordering on the heights of uniformly random trees with given degree sequences. The latter result can also be used to show that sub-binary random trees are stochastically the tallest trees with a given number of vertices and leaves (and thus that random binary trees are the stochastically tallest random homeomorphically irreducible trees with a given number of vertices). Our proofs are based in part on the bijection between trees and sequences introduced by Foata and Fuchs (1970), which can be recast to provide a line-breaking construction of random trees with given vertex degrees as shown in Addario-Berry, Blanc-Renaudie, Donderwinkel, Maazoun and Martin (2023).

Uniform generation of large traces

Abstract:We introduce an algorithm for the uniform generation of infinite traces, i.e., infinite words up to commutation of some letters. The algorithm outputs on-the-fly approximations of a theoretical infinite trace, the latter being distributed according to the exact uniform probability measure. The average size of the approximation grows linearly with the time of execution of the algorithm, hence its output can be effectively used while running. Two versions of the algorithm are given. A version without rejection has a good production speed, provided that some precomputations have been done, but these may be costly. A version with rejection requires much fewer computations, at the expense of a production speed that can be small. We also show that, for some particular trace monoids, one or the other version of the algorithm can actually be very good: few computations for a good production speed.

Random Generation of Git Graphs

Abstract:Version Control Systems, such as Git and Mercurial, manage the history of a project as a Directed Acyclic Graph encoding the various divergences and synchronizations happening in its life cycle. A popular workflow in the industry, called the feature branch workflow, constrains these graphs to be of a particular shape: a unique main branch, and non-interfering feature branches. Here we focus on the uniform random generation of those graphs with n vertices, including k on the main branch, for which we provide three algorithms, for three different use-cases. The first, based on rejection, is efficient when aiming for small values of k (more precisely whenever k = O($\sqrt$ n)). The second takes as input any number k of commits in the main branch, but requires costly precalculation. The last one is a Boltzmann generator and enables us to generate very large graphs while targeting a constant k/n ratio. All these algorithms are linear in the size of their outputs.

Abstract:In the balls-into-bins setting, $n$ balls are thrown uniformly at random into $n$ bins. The naïve way to generate the final load vector takes $\Theta(n)$ time. However, it is well-known that this load vector has with high probability bin cardinalities of size $\Theta(\frac{\log n}{\log \log n})$. Here, we present an algorithm in the RAM model that generates the bin cardinalities of the final load vector in the optimal $\Theta(\frac{\log n}{\log \log n})$ time in expectation and with high probability.

Abstract:We study a new class of polyominoes, called $p$-Fibonacci polyominoes, defined using $p$-Fibonacci words. We enumerate these polyominoes by applying generating functions to capture geometric parameters such as area, semi-perimeter, and the number of inner points. Additionally, we establish bijections between Fibonacci polyominoes, binary Fibonacci words, and integer compositions with certain restrictions.

Abstract:We consider multifold convolutions of a combinatorial sequence $(a_n)_{n=0}^{\infty}$: namely, for each $k \in \mathbb{N}$ the $k$-fold convolution is $\mathcal{M}^{(k)}_n(\boldsymbol{a}) = \sum_{j_1+\dots+j_k=n} a_{j_1} \cdots a_{j_k}$. Let $C_n$ be the Catalan numbers, and let $B_n$ be the central binomial coefficients. Then for random Dyck paths or simple random walk bridges, the multifold convolutions give moments of returns to the origin, using the stars-and-bars problem. There are well-known explicit formulas for the multifold convolutions of $C_n$ and $B_n$. But even for combinatorial sequences $B_n^2$ and $B_n^3$, one may determine asymptotics of multifold convolutions for large $n$. We also discuss large deviations.

Abstract:In this article we consider several probabilistic processes defining random grapha. One of these processes appeared recently in connection with a factorization problem in the symmetric group. For each of the probabilistic processes, we prove that the probability for the random graph to be a tree has an extremely simple expression, which is independent of most parameters of the problem. This raises many open questions.

Abstract:Problems for various random number generators accompanying the Wolff algorithm [U. Wolff, Phys. Rev. Lett. 62 (1989) 361; U. Wolff, Phys. Lett. B 228 (1989) 379] are discussed, including the hidden errors first reported in [A.M. Ferrenberg, D.P. Landau, Y.J. Wong, Phys. Rev. Lett. 69 (1992) 3382]. A general (though simple) method of twisting and combining for improving the performance of these generators is proposed. Some recent generators motivated by such a twisting and combining method with extremely long period are discussed. The proposed method provides a novel and simple way to improve RNGs in its performance.
A simple proof for generalized Fibonacci numbers with dying rabbits

Abstract:We consider the generalized Fibonacci counting problem with rabbits that become fertile at age $f$ and die at age $d$, with $1<=f<=d$ and $d$ finite or infinite. We provide a simple proof, based exclusively on a counting argumentation, for a recursive formula that gives the $n$th generalized Fibonacci number as a function of at most 3 previous numbers. The formula generalizes both the original Fibonacci sequence, for $f=2$ and $d=\infty$ (or $f=1$ and $d=2$), and other Fibonacci-related sequences, such as the Padovan sequence, for $f=2$ and $d=3$, the Tribonacci, for $f=1$ and $d=3$, Tetranacci, for $f=1$ and $d=4$, and alike sequences, for $f=1$ and finite values of $d$.

Abstract:A composition of a positive integer n is a k-tuple (λ1, λ2, …, λk) ∈ ℤk>0 such that n = λ1 + λ2 + … + λk. Our goal is to enumerate those compositions whose parts λ1, λ2, …, λk avoid a fixed arithmetic sequence. When this sequence is given by the even integers (i.e., all parts of the compositions must be odd), it is well known that the number of compositions is given by the Fibonacci sequence. A much more recent theorem says that when the parts are required to avoid all multiples of a given integer k, the resulting compositions are counted by a sequence given by a Fibonacci-type recursion of depth k. We extend this result to arbitrary arithmetic sequences. Our main tool is a lemma on generating functions that is no secret among experts but deserves to be more widely known.

Abstract:Motivated by applications in bioinformatics, we consider the word collector problem, i.e. the expected number of calls to a random weighted generator of words of length $n$ before the full collection is obtained. The originality of this instance of the non-uniform coupon collector lies in the, potentially large, multiplicity of the words/coupons of a given probability/composition. We obtain a general theorem that gives an asymptotic equivalent for the expected waiting time of a general version of the Coupon Collector. This theorem is especially well-suited for classes of coupons featuring high multiplicities. Its application to a given language essentially necessitates some knowledge on the number of words of a given composition/probability. We illustrate the application of our theorem, in a step-by-step fashion, on three exemplary languages, revealing asymptotic regimes in $\Theta(\mu(n)\cdot n)$ and $\Theta(\mu(n)\cdot \log n)$, where $\mu(n)$ is the sum of weights over words of length $n$.

Abstract:Summary Pseudorandom values are often generated as 64‐bit binary words. These random words need to be converted into ranged values without statistical bias. We present an efficient algorithm to generate multiple independent uniformly‐random bounded integers from a single uniformly‐random binary word, without any bias. In the common case, our method uses one multiplication and no division operations per value produced. In practice, our algorithm can more than double the speed of unbiased random shuffling for small to moderately large arrays.
