Abstract:We study random knots, which we define as a triple of random periodic functions (where a random function is a random trigonometric series, \[f(\theta) = \sum_{k=1}^\infty a_k \cos (k \theta) +b_k (\sin k \theta),\] with $a_k, b_k$ are independent gaussian random variables with mean $0$ and variance $\sigma(k)^2$ - our results will depend on the functional dependence of $\sigma$ on $k.$ In particular, we show that if $\sigma(k) = k^\alpha,$ with $\alpha < -3/2,$ then the probability of getting a knot type which admits a projection with $N$ crossings, decays at least as fast as $1/N.$ The constant $3/2$ is significant, because having $\alpha < -3/2$ is exactly the condition for $f(\theta)$ to be a $C^1$ function, so our class is precisely the class of random \emph{tame} knots. We also find some suprising experimental observations on the zeros of Alexander polynomials of random knots (with slowly and non-decaying coefficients), and even more surprising observations on their coefficients. Our observations persist in other models of random knots, making it likely that the results are universal.

Abstract:Both classical and virtual knots arise as formal Gauss diagrams modulo some abstract moves corresponding to Reidemeister moves. If we forget about both over/under crossings structure and writhe numbers of knots modulo the same Reidemeister moves, we get a dramatic simplification of virtual knots, which kills all classical knots. However, many virtual knots survive after this simplification. We construct invariants of these objects and present their applications to minimality problems of virtual knots as well as some questions related to graph-links. One can easily generalize these results for the orientable case and apply them for solving non-invertibility problems. The main idea behind these invariants is some geometrical construction which reduces the general equivalence to the equivalence only modulo Reidemeister - 2 move.

Abstract:In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a knot type to admit non-loose Legendrian and transverse representatives in some overtwisted contact structure, classify all non-loose rational unknots in lens spaces, and discuss conditions under which non-looseness is preserved under cabling.

Abstract:We associate a noncommutative curve to a periodic, bipartite, planar dimer model with polygonal boundary. It determines the inverse Kasteleyn matrix and hence all correlations. It may be seen as a quantization of the limit shape construction of Kenyon and the author. We also discuss various directions in which this correspondence may be generalized.

Abstract:It is known that the topological conjugacy class of a Morse-Smale flows with unique saddle is defined by the equivalence class of the Hopf knot in that is the projection of the one-dimensional saddle separatrix onto the basin of attraction of the nodal point, and the ambient manifold of a diffeomorphism in this class is the 3-sphere. In the present paper a similar result is obtained for gradient-like diffeomorphisms with exactly two saddle points and unique heteroclinic curve. Bibliography: 11 titles.

Abstract:We propose a stochastic method to generate exactly the overdamped Langevin dynamics of semi-flexible Gaussian chains, conditioned to evolve between given initial and final conformations in a preassigned time. The initial and final conformations have no restrictions, and hence can be in any knotted state. Our method allows the generation of statistically independent paths in a computationally efficient manner. We show that these conditioned paths can be exactly generated by a set of local stochastic differential equations. The method is used to analyze the transition routes between various knots in crossable filamentous structures, thus mimicking topological reconnections occurring in soft matter systems or those introduced in DNA by topoisomerase enzymes. We find that the average number of crossings, writhe and unknotting number are not necessarily monotonic in time and that more complex topologies than the initial and final ones can be visited along the route.

When the turning point is a smooth point of the frozen boundary, the resulting point process is identified with the standard Gaussian measure on infinite Hermitian matrices. Abstract:This manuscript introduces a new framework for the study of knots by exploring the neighborhood of knot embeddings in the space of simple open and closed curves in 3-space. The latter gives rise to a knotoid spectrum, which determines the knot type via its knot-type knotoids. We prove that the pure knotoids in the knotoid spectra of a knot, which are individually agnostic of the knot type, can distinguish knots of Gordian distance greater than one. We also prove that the neighborhood of some embeddings of the unknot can be distinguished from any embedding of any non-trivial knot that satisfies the cosmetic crossing conjecture. Topological invariants of knots can be extended to their open curve neighborhood to define continuous functions in the neighborhood of knots. We discuss their properties and prove that invariants in the neighborhood of knots may be able to distinguish more knots than their application to the knots themselves. For example, we prove that an invariant of knots that fails to distinguish mutant knots (and mutant knotoids), can distinguish them by their neighborhoods, unless it also fails to distinguish non-mutant pure knotoids in their spectra. Studying the neighborhood of knots opens the possibility of answering questions, such as if an invariant can detect the unknot, via examining possibly easier questions, such as whether it can distinguish height one knotoids from the trivial knotoid.

Let [math] be a tame knot and consider an [math] beaded necklace [math] which is the union of [math] consecutive disjoint closed round balls (pearls) [math], [math]. An [math] pearl chain necklace [math] is the union of [math] and [math]. We will construct, via the action of a Kleinian group, a sequence of nested pearl chain necklaces [math] whose inverse limit is a wild knot of dynamically defined type [math]. In this paper, we will prove some topological properties of this kind of wild knots; in particular, we generalize the construction of cyclic branched coverings for this case, and we show that there exists a wild knot of dynamically defined type such that [math] is an [math]-fold cyclic branched covering of [math] along it, for [math].

Abstract:Classical knot theory deals with {\em diagrams} and {\em invariants}. By means of horizontal {\em trisecants}, we construct a new theory of classical braids with invariants valued in {\em pictures}. These pictures are closely related to diagrams of the initial object. The main tool is the notion of {\em free $k$-braid group}. In the simplest case, for free $2$-braids, the word problem and the conjugacy problem can be solved by finding the minimal representative, which can be thought of as a graph, and is unique, as such. We prove a general theorem about invariants of dynamical systems which are valued in such groups and hence, in pictures. We describe various applications of the above theory: invariants of weavings (collections of skew lines in $\R^{3}$), and many other objects in geometry and topology. In general, provided that for some topological objects (considered up to isotopy, homotopy etc) some easy axioms (coming from some dimensional constraints) hold, one can construct similar dynamical systems and picture-valued invariants.

Abstract:The motivation for this work is to construct a map from classical knots to virtual ones. What we get in the paper is a series of maps from knots in the full torus (thickened torus) to flat-virtual knots. We give definition of flat-virtual knots and presents Alexander-like polynomial and (picture-valued) Kauffman bracket for them.

Abstract:We prove that each overtwisted contact structure has knot types that are represented by infinitely many distinct transverse knots all with the same self-linking number. In some cases, we can even classify all such knots. We also show similar results for Legendrian knots and prove a "folk" result concerning loose transverse and Legendrian knots (that is knots with overtwisted complements) which says that such knots are determined by their classical invariants (up to contactomorphism). Finally we discuss how these results partially fill in our understanding of the "geography" and "botany"' problems for Legendrian knots in overtwisted contact structures, as well as many open questions regarding these problems.

Abstract:The topological underpinnings are presented for a new algorithm which answers the question: `Is a given knot the unknot?' The algorithm uses the braid foliation technology of Bennequin and of Birman and Menasco. The approach is to consider the knot as a closed braid, and to use the fact that a knot is unknotted if and only if it is the boundary of a disc with a combinatorial foliation. The main problems which are solved in this paper are: how to systematically enumerate combinatorial braid foliations of a disc; how to verify whether a combinatorial foliation can be realized by an embedded disc; how to find a word in the the braid group whose conjugacy class represents the boundary of the embedded disc; how to check whether the given knot is isotopic to one of the enumerated examples; and finally, how to know when we can stop checking and be sure that our example is not the unknot.

Abstract:In this paper we provide a combinatorial tool to help study some topological properties of modular knots. We construct templates for the infinitely many Anosov flows on the trefoil complement, which are lifts of the geodesic flow on the modular surface, by lifting Ghys' modular template using self-covering of the trefoil complement of order $6k+1$, for $k\in \mathbb{N}_{>0}$. This allows to study the knot properties of closed geodesics in these flows, and an explicit construction of an infinite family of links of two components with one of them being the trefoil, all commensurable to one another.

Abstract:We suggest a new random model for links based on meander diagrams and graphs. We then prove that trivial links appear with vanishing probability in this model, no link L is obtained with probability 1, and there is a lower bound for the number of non-isotopic knots obtained for a fixed number of crossings. A random meander diagram is obtained through matching pairs of parentheses, a well-studied problem in combinatorics. Hence tools from combinatorics can be used to investigate properties of random links in this model, and, moreover, of the respective 3-manifolds that are link complements in 3-sphere. We use this for exploring geometric properties of a link complement. Specifically, we give expected twist number of a link diagram and use it to bound expected hyperbolic and simplicial volume of random links. The tools from combinatorics that we use include Catalan and Narayana numbers, and Zeilberger's algorithm.

Abstract:We show that every nonzero integer occurs as the denominator of a boundary slope for infinitely many (1,1)-knots and that infinitely many (1,1)-knots have boundary slopes of arbitrarily small difference. Specifically, we prove that for any integers m,n>1$$m,n>1$$ with n odd the exterior of the Montesinos knot K(-1/2,m/(2m±1),1/n)$$K(-1/2, m/(2m\pm 1),1/n)$$ in S3$$S^3$$ contains an essential surface with boundary slope r=2(n-1)2/n$$r = 2(n-1)^2/n$$ if m is even and 2(n+1)2/n$$2(n+1)^2/n$$ if m is odd. If n≥4m+1$$n \ge 4m + 1$$, we prove that K(-1/2,m/(2m+1),1/n)$$K(-1/2, m/(2m+1),1/n)$$ also has a boundary slope whose difference with r is (8m-2)/(n2-4mn+n)$$(8m-2)/(n^2-4mn+n)$$, which decreases to 0 as n increases. All of these knots are (1,1)-knots.
