Abstract:We study the spectrum of the operator T generated by the differential expression of order n>2 with the m×m Parity‐Time (PT)‐symmetric periodic matrix coefficients. The case when m and n are the odd numbers was investigated in [18]. In this paper, we consider the all remained cases: (a) n is an odd number and m is an even number, (b) n is an even number and m is an arbitrary positive integer. We find conditions on the coefficients under which in the cases (a) and (b) the spectrum of T contains the sets (−∞,−H] ∪[H,∞) and [H,∞) respectively for some H>0 .

Abstract:In this article we obtain asymptotic formulas for the Bloch eigenvalues of the operator generated by a system of Schrodinger equations with periodic PT-symmetric complex-valued coefficients. Then using these formulas we classify the spectrum of this operator and find a condition on the coefficients for which the spectrum contains a half line.

Abstract:In this paper we study the spectrum of a fundamental differential operator on a Hilbert-Pólya space. A number is an eigenvalue of this differential operator if and only if it is a nontrivial zero of the Riemann zeta function. An explicit formula is given for the eigenfunction associated with each nontrivial zero of the zeta function. Every eigenfunction is characterized via the Poisson summation formula by a sequence of mysterious functions whose explicit formulas are given.

Abstract:This work is devoted to the development of methods for constructing asymptotic formulas as x→∞ of a fundamental system of solutions of linear differential equations generated by a symmetric two-term differential expression of odd order. The coefficients of the differential expression belong to classes of functions that allow oscillation (for example, those that do not satisfy the classical Titchmarsh–Levitan regularity conditions). As a model equation, the fifth-order equation i2p(x)y′′′′′+p(x)y′′′′′+q(x)y=λy, along with various behaviors of coefficients p(x),q(x), is investigated. New asymptotic formulas are obtained for the case when the function h(x)=−1+p−1/2(x)∉L1[1,∞) significantly influences the asymptotics of solutions to the equation. The case when the equation contains a nontrivial bifurcation parameter is studied.

Abstract:SIAM Review, Volume 66, Issue 1, Page 125-146, February 2024. We analyze the spectrum of the operator subject to homogeneous Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions, where denotes the Laplacian and is a symmetric tensor. Our main result shows that this spectrum can be derived from the spectral decomposition , where is an orthogonal matrix and is a diagonal matrix. More precisely, provided that is continuous, the spectrum equals the convex hull of the ranges of the diagonal function entries of . The domain involved is assumed to be bounded and Lipschitz. In addition to studying operators defined on infinite-dimensional Sobolev spaces, we also report on recent results concerning their discretized finite-dimensional counterparts. More specifically, even though is not compact, it turns out that every point in the spectrum of this operator can, to an arbitrary accuracy, be approximated by eigenvalues of the associated generalized algebraic eigenvalue problems arising from discretizations. Our theoretical investigations are illuminated by numerical experiments. The results presented in this paper extend previous analyses which have addressed elliptic differential operators with scalar coefficient functions. Our investigation is motivated by both preconditioning issues (efficient numerical computations) and the need to further develop the spectral theory of second order PDEs (core analysis).

Abstract:In this paper, we consider periodic boundary value problems for differential equations whose coefficients are trigonometric polynomials. We construct the spaces of generalized functions, where such problems have solutions. In particular, the solvability space of a periodic analogue of the Mizohata equation is constructed. We build also a periodic analogue and a generalization of the construction of the nonstandard analysis, where infinitely smalls are not only functions, but also functional spaces. To show that not all constructions on the torus lead to a simplification in compare with the plane, we consider a periodic analogue of the hypoelliptic differential operator and show that its number-theoretic properties are significant. In particular, it turns out that if a polynomial with integer coefficients is irreducible in the rational field, then the corresponding differential operator is hypoelliptic on the torus.

Abstract:In this paper we examine the asymptotic structure of the pseudospectrum of the singular Sturm-Liouville operator $L=\partial_x(f\partial_x)+\partial_x$ subject to periodic boundary conditions on a symmetric interval, where the coefficient $f$ is a regular odd function that has only a simple zero at the origin. The operator $L$ is closely related to a remarkable model examined by Davies in 2007, which exhibits surprising spectral properties balancing symmetries and strong non-self-adjointness. In our main result, we derive a concrete construction of classical pseudo-modes for $L$ and give explicit exponential bounds of growth for the resolvent norm in rays away from the spectrum.

Abstract:This article gives a fundamental discussion on variable coefficients, self-adjoint, formally partially hypoelliptic differential operators. A generalization of the results to pseudo differential operators, is given in a following article in ArXiv. Close to N. Nilsson "Some estimates for spectral functions connected with formally hypoelliptic differential operators" in Arkiv för matematik ,10, 1972, we give a construction and estimates for a fundamental solution to the operator in a suitable topology. We further give estimates of the corresponding spectral kernel.

On singular pencils with commuting coefficients

Abstract:We investigate the relation between the spectrum of matrix (or operator) polynomials and the Taylor spectrum of its coefficients. We prove that the polynomial of commuting matrices is singular, i.e. its spectrum is the whole complex plane, if and only if (0, 0, ... , 0) belongs to the Taylor spectrum of its coefficients. On the other hand we prove that this equivalence is not longer true if we consider the operators on infinite dimensional Hilbert space as coefficients of polynomial. As a consequence we could propose a new description of (Taylor) spectrum of k-tuple of matrices and we could disprove the conjecture previously proposed in the literature. Additionally, we pointed out the Kronecker forms of the pencils with commuting coefficients.

Abstract:The study of symmetries of partial differential equations (PDEs) has been traditionally treated as a geometrical problem. Although geometrical methods have been proven effective with regard to finding infinitesimal symmetry transformations, they present certain conceptual difficulties in the case of matrix-valued PDEs; for example, the usual differential-operator representation of the symmetry-generating vector fields is not possible in this case. In this article an algebraic approach to the symmetry problem of PDEs - both scalar and matrix-valued - is described, based on abstract operators (characteristic derivatives) that admit a standard differential-operator representation in the case of scalar-valued PDEs. A number of examples are given.

Abstract:Let $p>2$ be a prime number. In this short note, we calculate explicitly the unitary dual and the matrix coefficients of the Heisenberg group over the $p$-adic integers. As an application, we consider directional Vladimirov-Taibleson derivatives, and some polynomials in these operators. In particular, we calculate explicitly the spectrum of the Vladimirov sub-Laplacian, and show how it provides a non-trivial example of a sub-elliptic operator on compact graded $p$-adic Lie groups.

Abstract:Generalized spectra of differential operators can be related to spectra of preconditioned discretized operators. Obtaining (estimates of) the eigenvalues of the preconditioned discretized operators may lead to better estimating of the quality of preconditioners. In this short paper, we answer the open question posted in the recent paper Generalized spectrum of second order differential operators, authored by Gergelits, Nielsen, and Strako\v s. The proof we present allows us to fully extend characterizing the generalized spectra of $\nabla\cdot K\nabla u=\lambda\triangle u$ to problems of dimension three or higher.

Abstract:For discrete spectrum of 1D second-order differential/difference operators (with or without potential (killing), with the maximal/minimal domain), a pair of unified dual criteria are presented in terms of two explicit measures and the harmonic function of the operators. Interes\-tingly, these criteria can be read out from the ones for the exponential convergence of four types of stability studied earlier, simply replacing the `finite supremum' by `vanishing at infinity'. Except a dual technique, the main tool used here is a transform in terms of the harmonic function, to which two new practical algorithms are introduced in the discrete context and two successive approximation schemes are reviewed in the continuous context. All of them are illustrated by examples. The main body of the paper is devoted to the hard part of the story, the easier part but powerful one is delayed to the end of the paper.

Abstract:The study of spectral properties of natural geometric elliptic partial differential operators acting on smooth sections of vector bundles over Riemannian manifolds is a central theme in global analysis, differential geometry and mathematical physics. Instead of studying the spectrum of a differential operator $L$ directly one usually studies its spectral functions, that is, spectral traces of some functions of the operator, such as the spectral zeta function $\zeta(s)=\Tr L^{-s}$ and the heat trace $\Theta(t)=\Tr\exp(-tL)$. The kernel $U(t;x,x')$ of the heat semigroup $\exp(-tL)$, called the heat kernel, plays a major role in quantum field theory and quantum gravity, index theorems, non-commutative geometry, integrable systems and financial mathematics. We review some recent progress in the study of spectral asymptotics. We study more general spectral functions, such as $\Tr f(tL)$, that we call quantum heat traces. Also, we define new invariants of differential operators that depend not only on the their eigenvalues but also on the eigenfunctions, and, therefore, contain much more information about the geometry of the manifold. Furthermore, we study some new invariants, such as $\Tr\exp(-tL_+)\exp(-sL_-)$, that contain relative spectral information of two differential operators. Finally we show how the convolution of the semigroups of two different operators can be computed by using purely algebraic methods.

Abstract:Ordinary and partial differential equations with operators containing the p-Laplace operator, the so called ϕ-Laplace operator, operators with variable exponents and the double phase operators have been studied thoroughly for at least the last 20 years and the amount of papers dealing with these subjects is huge. In this paper we deal with the problem of the existence of periodic solutions to some system of ODE's involving a fairly general operator generalizing in this form corresponding results for the areas of research just mentioned. In our results neither the function generating the differential operator nor the right hand side function in the boundary value problem considered are necessarily equal to the gradient of a function. Our main result is a here is a continuation theorem based on the Leray-Schauder degree theory which allows us to obtain the existence of solutions for the boundary value problem considered.
