Abstract:Bloch theorem for a periodic operator is being revisited here, and we notice extra orthogonality relationships. It is shown that solutions are bi-periodic, in the sense that eigenfunctions are periodic with respect to one argument, and pseudo-periodic with respect to the other. An additional kind of symmetry between r-space and k-space exists between the envelope and eignfunctions not apparently noticed before, which allows to define new invertible modified Wannier functions. As opposed to the Wannier functions in r-space, these modified Wannier functions are defined in the k-spaces, but satisfy similar basic properties. These could result in new algorithms and other novel applications in the computational tools of periodic structures.

We study the localizations of the Bloch eigenvalues and the structure of the spectrum. Abstract:We consider the quasi-periodic Jacobi operator $H_{x,\omega}$ in $l^2(\mathbb{Z})$ $(H_{x,\omega}\phi)(n) = -b(x+(n+1)\omega)\phi(n+1) - b(x+n\omega)\phi(n-1) + a(x+n\omega)\phi(n) = E\phi(n),\ n\in\mathbb{Z},$ where $a(x),\ b(x)$ are analytic function on $\mathbb{T}$, $b$ is not identically zero, and $\omega$ obeys some strong Diophantine condition. We consider the corresponding unimodular cocycle. We prove that if the Lyapunov exponent $L(E)$ of the cocycle is positive for some $E=E_0$, then there exists $\rho_0=\rho_0(a,b,\omega,E_0)$, $\beta=\beta(a,b,\omega)$ such that $|L(E)-L(E')|<|E-E'|^\beta$ for any $E,E'\in (E_0-\rho_0,E_0+\rho_0)$. In our derivation we follow the refined version of the Goldstein-Schlag method \cite{GS} developed by Bourgain and Jitomirskaya \cite{BJ}.

Abstract:In this letter, the matrix invariant of the Bloch equation with time-dependent coefficients is found, the time evolution of the system is discussed and the exact solution of the system is obtained. We then proceed to study the cyclic evolution of the system, obtaining the Aharonov-Anandan phase. Finally, it is shown that the study of noncyclic evolution of the system can be reduced to the cyclic evolution.

Abstract:We study linear systems of ordinary differential equations of an arbitrary order on a finite interval with the most general (generic) inhomogeneous boundary conditions in Sobolev spaces. We investigate the character of solvability of inhomogeneous boundary-value problems, prove their Fredholm properties, and find the indices, the dimensions of the kernel, and the cokernel of these problems. Moreover, we obtained necessary and sufficient conditions for continuity in a parameter of solutions to the introduced problems in Sobolev spaces.

A note on spectral theory of integral-functional Volterra operators

Abstract:A concise overview of the spectral theory of integral-functional operators is provided. In the context of analysis, a technique is described for deriving solutions to equations involving operators in a closed form. A constructive theorem has been established, outlining a procedure for determining the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of these operators. Based on this foundation, an analytical approach for generating solutions to a Volterra-type integro-functional inhomogeneous equation is proposed.

Abstract:One of the most pronounced non-Hermitian phenomena is the non-Hermitian skin effect, which refers to the exponential localization of bulk eigenstates near the boundaries of non-Hermitian systems. Whereas non-Bloch band theory has been developed to describe the non-Hermitian skin effect in lattice systems, its counterpart in continuum systems still lacks a quantitative characterization. Here, we generalize the non-Bloch band theory to non-Hermitian continuum systems. In contrast to lattice systems for which the bulk Hamiltonian alone determines the non-Hermitian skin effect and energy spectrum, we find for continuum systems that the number of boundary conditions must also be included as essential information. We show that the appropriate discretization of continuum systems into lattice models requires matching the hopping range of the latter to the number of boundary conditions in the former. Furthermore, in periodic non-Hermitian continuum systems, we highlight the application of the transfer matrix in determining the generalized Brillouin zone. Our theory serves as a useful toolbox for investigating the rich non-Bloch physics in non-Hermitian continuum systems, such as photonic crystals, elastic media, and certain cold-atom systems.

Non-Bloch band theory for time-modulated discrete mechanical systems

Abstract:This study establishes a non-Bloch band theory for time-modulated discrete mechanical systems. We consider simple mass-spring chains whose stiffness is periodically modulated in time. Using the temporal Floquet theory, the system is characterized by linear algebraic equations in terms of Fourier coefficients. This allows us to employ a standard linear eigenvalue analysis. Unlike non-modulated linear systems, the time modulation makes the coefficient matrix non-Hermitian, which gives rise to, for example, parametric resonance, non-reciprocal wave transmission, and non-Hermitian skin effects. In particular, we study finite-length chains consisting of spatially periodic mass-spring units and show that the standard Bloch band theory is not valid for estimating their eigenvalue distribution. To remedy this, we propose a non-Bloch band theory based on a generalized Brillouin zone. The proposed theory is verified by some numerical experiments.

Abstract:The Volterra-type integral operator plays an essential role in modern complex analysis and operator theory. Recently, Chalmoukis \cite{Cn} introduced a generalized integral operator, say $I_{g,a}$, defined by $$I_{g,a}f=I^n(a_0f^{(n-1)}g'+a_1f^{(n-2)}g''+\cdots+a_{n-1}fg^{(n)}),$$ where $g\in H(\mathbb{D})$ and $a=(a_0,a_1,\cdots,a_{n-1})\in \mathbb{C}^n$. $I^n$ is the $n$th iteration of the integral operator $I$. In this paper, we introduce a more generalized integral operators $I_{\mathbf{g}}^{(n)}$ that cover $I_{g,a}$ on the Bloch-type space $\mathcal{B}^{\alpha}$, defined by $$I_{\mathbf{g}}^{(n)}f=I^n(fg_0+\cdots+f^{(n-1)}g_{n-1}).$$ We show the rigidity of the operator $I_{\mathbf{g}}^{(n)}$ and further the sum $\sum_{i=1}^nI_{g_i}^{N_i,k_i}$, where $I_{g_i}^{N_i,k_i}f=I^{N_i}(f^{(k_i)}g_i)$. Specifically, the boundedness and compactness of $\sum_{i=1}^nI_{g_i}^{N_i,k_i}$ are equal to those of each $I_{g_i}^{N_i,k_i}$. Moreover, the boundedness and compactness of $I^n((fg')^{(n-1)})$ are independent of $n$ when $\alpha>1$.

Abstract:Ordinary differential operators with periodic coefficients analytic in a strip act on a Hardy-Hilbert space of analytic functions with inner product defined by integration over a period on the boundary of the strip. Simple examples show that eigenfunctions may form a complete set for a narrow strip, but completeness may be lost for a wide strip. Completeness of the eigenfunctions in the Hardy-Hilbert space is established for regular second order operators with matrix-valued coefficients when the leading coefficient satisfies a positive real part condition throughout the strip.

The case when m and n are the odd numbers was investigated in [18]. In this paper, we consider the all remained cases: (a) n is an odd number and m is an even number, (b) n is an even number and m is an arbitrary positive integer. We find conditions on the coefficients under which in the cases (a) and (b) the spectrum of T contains the sets (−∞,−H] ∪[H,∞) and [H,∞) respectively for some H>0 .

Abstract:We study the properties of the quantum states in the one-dimensional system with a shifted periodic potential in both the discrete model and the continuous model. With open boundary conditions, the edge states appear in the energy gaps which indicate non-trivial topological structures. The Chern numbers with respect to the Bloch vector and the potential shift angle are computed. In the limit of the continuous model, the Chern number of each band is exactly one. We demonstrate the particle number pumped by the adiabatically shift of the potential is directly related to the topological invariants.

Abstract:In this article we obtain asymptotic formulas for the Bloch eigenvalues of the operator generated by a system of Schrodinger equations with periodic PT-symmetric complex-valued coefficients. Then using these formulas we classify the spectrum of this operator and find a condition on the coefficients for which the spectrum contains a half line.

Abstract:We compare and discuss the respective efficiency of three methods (with two variants for each of them), based respectively on Taylor (Maclaurin) series, Padé approximants and conformal mappings, for solving quasi-analytically a two-point boundary value problem of a nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODE). Six configurations of ODE and boundary conditions are successively considered according to the increasing difficulties that they present. After having indicated that the Taylor series method almost always requires the recourse to analytical continuation procedures to be efficient, we use the complementarity of the two remaining methods (Padé and conformal mapping) to illustrate their respective advantages and limitations. We emphasize the importance of the existence of solutions with movable singularities for the efficiency of the methods, particularly for the so-called Padé–Hankel method. (We show that this latter method is equivalent to pushing a movable pole to infinity.) For each configuration, we determine the singularity distribution (in the complex plane of the independent variable) of the solution sought and show how this distribution controls the efficiency of the two methods. In general the method based on Padé approximants is easy to use and robust but may be awkward in some circumstances whereas the conformal mapping method is a very fine method which should be used when high accuracy is required.
