Abstract:Recent experiments have demonstrated the possibility to design highly controllable junctions on magic angle twisted bilayer graphene, enabling the test of its superconducting transport properties. We show that the presence of chiral pairing in such devices manifests in the appearance of an anomalous Josephson effect ($\phi_0$ behavior) even in the case of symmetric junctions and without requiring any magnetic materials or fields. Such behavior arises from the combination of chiral pairing and nontrivial topology of the twisted bilayer graphene band structure that can effectively break inversion symmetry. Moreover, we show that the $\phi_0$ effect could be experimentally enhanced and controlled by electrostatic tuning of the junction transmission properties.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve This paper aims to explore how chiral pairing leads to the non - magnetic ϕ₀ Josephson effect in Josephson junctions (JJs) in magic - angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG). Specifically, the authors studied the following problems: 1. **Effects of chiral pairing and non - trivial topological structures**: - By introducing chiral pairing (e.g., \(d + id'\) wave), study how it affects the Josephson effect in MATBG. - Explore how chiral pairing and the non - trivial band topological structure of MATBG work together to produce a spontaneous ϕ₀ effect (i.e., a non - zero superconducting current appears without a superconducting phase difference). 2. **Possibilities of experimental enhancement and control**: - Study how to enhance and control this ϕ₀ effect by electrostatically tuning the transport properties of the intermediate normal region. 3. **Distinguishing different pairing mechanisms**: - Propose using ϕ₀ behavior as a reliable feature to help distinguish the chiral pairing mechanism in MATBG from other possible pairing mechanisms (such as nodal pairing). ### Main conclusions The authors showed that chiral pairing exhibits non - magnetic ϕ₀ behavior in MATBG, which stems from the non - trivial topological properties of the MATBG band structure. In addition, they also illustrated that this effect can be enhanced and controlled by expanding the junction and electrically tuning the intermediate normal region. These results contribute to a further understanding of the unconventional superconducting mechanisms in MATBG and provide a potential method for experimentally verifying the existence of chiral pairing. ### Formula examples Some of the key formulas involved in the paper include: - The form of the order parameter for chiral pairing: \[ \Delta_{d_{x^2 - y^2}}=\Delta\sqrt{3}[\cos(k_yL_y)-\cos(k_xL_x / 2)\cos(k_yL_y / 2)] \] \[ \Delta_{d_{xy}}=\Delta\sin(k_xL_x / 2)\sin(k_yL_y / 2) \] where \(\Delta\) is the pairing strength, and \(L_x\) and \(L_y\) are the orthogonal lattice vectors of the double - primitive cell. - The energy dispersion relation of Andreev boundary states: \[ \epsilon(k_\parallel)=\pm\sqrt{\tilde{\Delta}(k_\parallel)^2+T_kR_k\cos^2\left(\frac{\bar{\theta}_k}{2}\right)-T_k\sin^2\left(\frac{\phi}{2}-\frac{\delta\theta_k}{2}\right)} \] where \(T_k\) is the transmission coefficient, \(R_k = 1 - T_k\), \(\tilde{\Delta}(k_\parallel)\) is the effective energy gap, \(\bar{\theta}_k=\theta(k_\parallel)+\theta'(k_\parallel)\), \(\delta\theta_k=\theta(k_\parallel)-\theta'(k_\parallel)\). Through these studies, the authors provided new insights into understanding chiral superconductivity and related Josephson effects in MATBG.
