Abstract:An automorphism of a spherical building is called \textit{domestic} if it maps no chamber onto an opposite chamber. This paper forms a significant part of a large project classifying domestic automorphisms of spherical buildings of exceptional type. In previous work the classifications for $\mathsf{G}_2$, $\mathsf{F}_4$ and $\mathsf{E}_6$ have been completed, and the present work provides the classification for buildings of type $\mathsf{E}_7$. In many respects this case is the richest amongst all exceptional types.

Abstract:An automorphism $\theta$ of a spherical building $\Delta$ is called \textit{capped} if it satisfies the following property: if there exist both type $J_1$ and $J_2$ simplices of $\Delta$ mapped onto opposite simplices by $\theta$ then there exists a type $J_1\cup J_2$ simplex of $\Delta$ mapped onto an opposite simplex by $\theta$. In previous work we showed that if $\Delta$ is a thick irreducible spherical building of rank at least $3$ with no Fano plane residues then every automorphism of $\Delta$ is capped. In the present work we consider the spherical buildings with Fano plane residues (the \textit{small buildings}). We show that uncapped automorphisms exist in these buildings and develop an enhanced notion of "opposition diagrams" to capture the structure of these automorphisms. Moreover we provide applications to the theory of "domesticity" in spherical buildings, including the complete classification of domestic automorphisms of small buildings of types $\mathsf{F}_4$ and $\mathsf{E}_6$.

Abstract:An automorphism of a building is called uniclass if the Weyl distance between any chamber and its image lies in a single (twisted) conjugacy class of the Coxeter group. In this paper we characterise uniclass automorphisms of spherical buildings in terms of their fixed structure. For this purpose we introduce the notion of a Weyl substructure in a spherical building. We also link uniclass automorphisms to the Freudenthal--Tits magic square.

Abstract:For a locally finite, connected graph $\Gamma$, let $\operatorname{Map}(\Gamma)$ denote the group of proper homotopy equivalences of $\Gamma$ up to proper homotopy. Excluding sporadic cases, we show $\operatorname{Aut}(S(M_\Gamma)) \cong \operatorname{Map}(\Gamma)$, where $\mathcal{S}(M_\Gamma)$ is the sphere complex of the doubled handlebody $M_\Gamma$ associated to $\Gamma$. We also construct an exhaustion of $S(M_\Gamma)$ by finite strongly rigid sets when $\Gamma$ has finite rank and finitely many rays, and an appropriate generalization otherwise.

Abstract:We describe an underlying right angled building structure of any graph product of buildings. We describe the automorphism group of the graph product of buildings. We show that the notion of generalized graph product of a collection of groups, each with an action on a building, corresponds to the group of automorphisms generated via lifts. It follows that if each building is finite, then the generalized graph product is residually finite.

Abstract:In this article we study the space of left- and bi-invariant orderings on a torsion-free nilpotent group $G$. We will show that generally the set of such orderings is equipped with a faithful action of the automorphism group of $G$. We prove a result which allows us to establish the same conclusion when $G$ is assumed to be merely residually torsion-free nilpotent. In particular, we obtain faithful actions of mapping class groups of surfaces. We will draw connections between the structure of orderings on residually torsion-free nilpotent, hyperbolic groups and their Gromov boundaries, and we show that in those cases a faithful $\Aut(G)$-action on the boundary is equivalent to a faithful $\Aut(G)$ action on the space of left--invariant orderings.

Abstract:In the context of holomorphic forms on tube domains, singular automorphic forms were studied by Maass [Maa], Freitag [Fre], and Resnikoff [Res], among others. A holomorphic form is singular if it is annihilated by certain differential operator(s). It is known that this is the case if and only if all its “nondegenerate” Fourier coefficients vanish, and if and only if it has one of the “singular weights”. The equivalence of these properties are far from trivial, and they constitute some of the basic results in the theory.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the effect of symmetry on the rigidity of bar-joint frameworks, spherical frameworks and point-hyperplane frameworks in $\mathbb{R}^d$. In particular we show that, under forced or incidental symmetry, infinitesimal rigidity for spherical frameworks with vertices in $X$ on the equator and point-hyperplane frameworks with the vertices in $X$ representing hyperplanes are equivalent. We then show, again under forced or incidental symmetry, that infinitesimal rigidity properties under certain symmetry groups can be paired, or clustered, under inversion on the sphere so that infinitesimal rigidity with a given group is equivalent to infinitesimal rigidity under a paired group. The fundamental basic example is that mirror symmetric rigidity is equivalent to half-turn symmetric rigidity on the 2-sphere. With these results in hand we also deduce some combinatorial consequences for the rigidity of symmetric bar-joint and point-line frameworks.

Abstract:Let S be a closed, orientable surface. We show that the automorphism group of the compression body graph of S is the (extended) mapping class group Mod(S). Here, vertices are compression bodies with exterior boundary S, and edges connect compression bodies when one can be realized as a submanifold of the other.

Regular maps with primitive automorphism groups

Abstract:We classify the regular maps $\mathcal M$ which have automorphism groups $G$ acting faithfully and primitively on their vertices. As a permutation group $G$ must be of almost simple or affine type, with dihedral point stabilisers. We show that all such almost simple groups, namely all but a few groups ${\rm PSL}_2(q)$, ${\rm PGL}_2(q)$ and ${\rm Sz}(q)$, arise from regular maps, which are always non-orientable. In the affine case, the maps $\mathcal M$ occur in orientable and non-orientable Petrie dual pairs. We give the number of maps associated with each group, together with their genus and extended type. Some of this builds on earlier work of the first author on generalised Paley maps, and on recent work of Jajcay, Li, \vSirá\vn and Wang on maps with quasiprimitive automorphism groups. There are tables of data for the maps in appendices to this paper.

Abstract:We give a systematic treatment of the treatment of the classical Hannay-Berry phases for mechanical systems in terms of the holonomy of naturally constructed connections on bundles associated to th~ system. We make the costructions using symmetry and reduction and, for moving systems, we use the Cartan connection. These ideas are woven with the idea of Montgomery [1988] on the averaging of connections to produce the Hannay-Berry connection.

Abstract:Let $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ be the mapping class group of the closed orientable surface of genus $g \geq 2$. In this article, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions under which two torsion elements in $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ will have conjugates that generate a finite symmetric or an alternating subgroup of $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$. Furthermore, we characterize when an involution would lift under the branched cover induced by an alternating action on $S_g$. Moreover, up to conjugacy, we derive conditions under which a given periodic mapping class is contained in a symmetric or an alternating subgroup of $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$. In particular, we show that symmetric or alternating subgroups can not contain irreducible mapping classes and hyperelliptic involutions. Finally, we classify the symmetric and alternating actions on $S_{10}$ and $S_{11}$ up to a certain equivalence we call weak conjugacy.

Automorphisms of weighted projective hypersurfaces

Abstract:We prove several results concerning automorphism groups of quasismooth complex weighted projective hypersurfaces; these generalize and strengthen existing results for hypersurfaces in ordinary projective space. First, we prove in most cases that automorphisms extend to the ambient weighted projective space. We next provide a characterization of when the linear automorphism group is finite and find an explicit uniform upper bound on the size of this group. Finally, we describe the automorphisms of a generic quasismooth hypersurface with given weights and degree.

Abstract:We first present an overview of our previous work on the dynamics of subgroups of automorphism groups of compact complex surfaces, together with a selection of open problems and new classification results. Then, we study two families of examples in depth: the first one comes from folding plane pentagons, and the second one is a family of groups introduced by Jérémy Blanc, which exhibits interesting new dynamical features.
