Abstract:We classify the epimorphisms of the buildings ${BC}_l(K,K_0,\sigma,L, q_0)$, where l is at least two, of pseudo-quadratic form type. This completes the classification of epimorphisms of irreducible spherical Moufang buildings of rank at least two.

Abstract:We give a classification of finite groups of symplectic birational automorphisms on a manifold of K3^[3]-type with stable and stably saturated cohomological action. We describe the group of polarized automorphisms of a smooth double EPW-cube. Using this description, we exhibit examples of projective hyperkaehler manifolds of K3^[3]-type of maximal Picard rank with a symplectic action of a large group.

Abstract:An automorphism of a spherical building is called \textit{domestic} if it maps no chamber onto an opposite chamber. This paper forms a significant part of a large project classifying domestic automorphisms of spherical buildings of exceptional type. In previous work the classifications for $\mathsf{G}_2$, $\mathsf{F}_4$ and $\mathsf{E}_6$ have been completed, and the present work provides the classification for buildings of type $\mathsf{E}_7$. In many respects this case is the richest amongst all exceptional types.

Abstract:Departing from a Moufang set related to a polarity in an exceptional Moufang quadrangle of type F_4, we construct a rank three geometry. The main property of this new geometry is that its automorphism group is identical to the one of the underlying Moufang set, providing a tool to study this Moufang set in a geometrical way. As a corollary we obtain that every automorphism of an exceptional Moufang quadrangle of type F_4 stabilizing the absolute points of a polarity, also centralizes the polarity. This handles the final case of a similar result for all polarities of Moufang n-gons.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of projective varieties polarised by ample and more generally nef and big Weil divisors. First we study birational boundedness of linear systems. We show that if $X$ is a projective variety of dimension $d$ with $\epsilon $ -lc singularities for $\epsilon >0$ , and if $N$ is a nef and big Weil divisor on $X$ such that $N-K_{X}$ is pseudo-effective, then the linear system $|mN|$ defines a birational map for some natural number $m$ depending only on $d,\epsilon $ . This is key to proving various other results. For example, it implies that if $N$ is a big Weil divisor (not necessarily nef) on a klt Calabi-Yau variety of dimension $d$ , then the linear system $|mN|$ defines a birational map for some natural number $m$ depending only on $d$ . It also gives new proofs of some known results, for example, if $X$ is an $\epsilon $ -lc Fano variety of dimension $d$ then taking $N=-K_{X}$ we recover birationality of $|-mK_{X}|$ for bounded $m$ . We prove similar birational boundedness results for nef and big Weil divisors $N$ on projective klt varieties $X$ when both $K_{X}$ and $N-K_{X}$ are pseudo-effective (here $X$ is not assumed $\epsilon $ -lc). Using the above, we show boundedness of polarised varieties under some natural conditions. We extend these to boundedness of semi-log canonical Calabi-Yau pairs polarised by effective ample Weil divisors not containing lc centres. We will briefly discuss applications to existence of projective coarse moduli spaces of such polarised Calabi-Yau pairs.

Abstract:Let $\Pi$ be a polar space of rank $n$ and let ${\mathcal G}_{k}(\Pi)$, $k\in \{0,\dots,n-1\}$ be the polar Grassmannian formed by $k$-dimensional singular subspaces of $\Pi$. The corresponding Grassmann graph will be denoted by $\Gamma_{k}(\Pi)$. We consider the polar Grassmannian ${\mathcal G}_{n-1}(\Pi)$ formed by maximal singular subspaces of $\Pi$ and show that the image of every isometric embedding of the $n$-dimensional hypercube graph $H_{n}$ in $\Gamma_{n-1}(\Pi)$ is an apartment of ${\mathcal G}_{n-1}(\Pi)$. This follows from a more general result (Theorem 2) concerning isometric embeddings of $H_{m}$, $m\le n$ in $\Gamma_{n-1}(\Pi)$. As an application, we classify all isometric embeddings of $\Gamma_{n-1}(\Pi)$ in $\Gamma_{n'-1}(\Pi')$, where $\Pi'$ is a polar space of rank $n'\ge n$ (Theorem 3).

Abstract:To the integral symplectic group Sp(2g,Z) we associate two posets of which we prove that they have the Cohen-Macaulay property. As an application we show that the locus of marked decomposable principally polarized abelian varieties in the Siegel space of genus g has the homotopy type of a bouquet of (g-2)-spheres. This, in turn, implies that the rational homology of moduli space of (unmarked) principal polarized abelian varieties of genus g modulo the decomposable ones vanishes in degree g-2 or lower. Another application is an improved stability range for the homology of the symplectic groups over Euclidean rings. But the original motivation comes from envisaged applications to the homology of groups of Torelli type. The proof of our main result rests on a refined nerve theorem for posets that may have an interest in its own right.
Good moduli spaces for boundary polarized Calabi-Yau surface pairs

Abstract:We construct projective asymptotically good moduli spaces parametrizing boundary polarized CY surface pairs, which are projective slc Calabi-Yau pairs $(X,D)$ such that $D$ is ample and $X$ has dimension two. The moduli space provides a wall crossing between certain KSBA and K-moduli spaces and is the ample model of the Hodge line bundle. In the case of K3 surfaces with a non-symplectic automorphism, the moduli space gives a modular interpretation for the Baily--Borel compactification.

Abstract:We determine the exact structure and action of Levi subgroups of parabolic subgroups of groups of Lie type related to thick, irreducible, spherical buildings of simply laced type. Therefore we introduce the special and general projectivity groups attached to simplices $F$. If the residue of $F$ is irreducible, we determine the permutation group of the projectivity groups of $F$ acting on the residue of $F$ and show that this determines the precise action of the Levi subgroup of a parabolic subgroup on the corresponding residue. This reveals three special cases for the exceptional types $E_6$, $E_7$, $E_8$. Furthermore, we establish a general diagrammatic rule to decide when exactly the special and general projectivity groups of $F$ coincide.

Abstract:We develop a unified approach for identifying spaces of stability conditions of triangulated categories arising from weighted marked surfaces with moduli spaces of quadratic differentials. This approach is based on the notion of a perverse schober (perverse sheaf of triangulated categories) and their triangulated categories of global sections. Under suitable conditions on the perverse schober, we identify mixed-angulations and their flips with finite-length hearts and their tilts, which then leads to the identification of moduli spaces. As an application we obtain a generalization of the results of Bridgeland--Smith to quadratic differentials with arbitrary singularity type (zero/pole/exponential).

Euler systems for conjugate-symplectic motives

Abstract:Let $\rho$ be a conjugate-symplectic, geometric representation of the Galois group of a CM field. Under the assumption that $\rho$ is automorphic, even-dimensional, and of minimal regular Hodge--Tate type, we construct an Euler system for $\rho$ in the sense of forthcoming work of Jetchev--Nekovar--Skinner. The construction is based on Theta cycles as introduced in a previous paper, following works of Kudla and Liu on arithmetic theta series on unitary Shimura varieties; it relies on a certain modularity hypothesis for those theta series. Under some ordinariness assumptions, one can attach to $\rho$ a p-adic L-function. By recent results of Liu and the author, and the theory of Jetchev--Nekovar--Skinner, we deduce the following (unconditional) result under mild assumptions: if the p-adic L-function of $\rho$ vanishes to order 1 at the centre, then the Selmer group of $\rho$ has rank 1, generated by the class of an algebraic cycle. This confirms a case of the p-adic Beilinson--Bloch--Kato conjecture.

Abstract:Let $q$ be an odd power of a prime $p\in \mathbb{N}$, and $\mathrm{PPSP}(\sqrt{q})$ be the finite set of isomorphism classes of principally polarized superspecial abelian surfaces in the simple isogeny class over $\mathbb{F}_q$ corresponding to the real Weil $q$-numbers $\pm \sqrt{q}$. We produce explicit formulas for $\mathrm{PPSP}(\sqrt{q})$ of the following kinds: (i) the class number formula, i.e.~the cardinality of $\mathrm{PPSP}(\sqrt{q})$; (ii) the type number formula, i.e. the number of endomorphism rings up to isomorphism of the underlying abelian surfaces of $\mathrm{PPSP}(\sqrt{q})$. Similar formulas are obtained for other collections of polarized superspecial members of this isogeny class grouped together according to their polarization modules. We observe several surprising identities involving the arithmetic genus of certain Hilbert modular surface on one side and the class number or type number of $(P, P_+)$-polarized superspecial abelian surfaces in this isogeny class on the other side.

Abstract:We call a non-discrete Euclidean building a {\it Bruhat-Tits space} if its automorphism group contains a subgroup that induces the subgroup generated by all the root groups of a root datum of the building at infinity. This is the class of non-discrete Euclidean buildings introduced and studied by Bruhat and Tits. We give the complete classification of Bruhat-Tits spaces whose building at infinity is the fixed point set of a polarity of an ambient building of type $\hbox{\sf B}_2$, $\hbox{\sf F}_4$ or $\hbox{\sf G}_2$ associated with a Ree or Suzuki group endowed with the usual root datum. (In the $\hbox{\sf B}_2$ and $\hbox{\sf G}_2$ cases, this fixed point set is a building of rank one; in the $\hbox{\sf F}_4$ case, it is a generalized octagon whose Weyl group is not crystallographic.) We also show that each of these Bruhat-Tits spaces has a natural embedding in the unique Bruhat-Tits space whose building at infinity is the corresponding ambient building.

Obstructions to semiorthogonal decompositions for singular projective varieties II: Representation theory

Abstract:We show that odd-dimensional projective varieties with tilting objects and only ADE-hypersurface singularities are nodal, i.e. they only have $A_1$-singularities. This is a very special case of more general obstructions to the existence of semiorthogonal decompositions for projective Gorenstein varieties. More precisely, for many isolated hypersurface singularities, we show that Kuznetsov-Shinder's categorical absorptions of singularities cannot contain tilting objects. The key idea is to compare singularity categories of projective varieties to singularity categories of finite-dimensional associative Gorenstein algebras. The former often contain special generators, called cluster-tilting objects, which typically have loops and $2$-cycles in their quivers. In contrast, quivers of cluster-tilting objects in the latter categories, can never have loops or $2$-cycles.

Abstract:The main theme of this paper is the introduction of a new type of polarizations, suited for some open symplectic manifolds, and their applications. These applications include symplectic embedding results that answer a question by Sackel-Song-Varolgunes-Zhu and Brendel, new Lagrangian non-removable intersections at small scales, and a novel phenomenon of Legendrian barriers in contact geometry.

Moduli of polarized Enriques surfaces -- computational aspects

Abstract:Moduli spaces of (polarized) Enriques surfaces can be described as open subsets of modular varieties of orthogonal type. It was shown by Gritsenko and Hulek that there are, up to isomorphism, only finitely many different moduli spaces of polarized Enriques surfaces. Here we investigate the possible arithmetic groups and show that there are exactly $87$ such groups up to conjugacy. We also show that all moduli spaces are dominated by a moduli space of polarized Enriques surfaces of degree $1240$. Ciliberto, Dedieu, Galati, and Knutsen have also investigated moduli spaces of polarized Enriques surfaces in detail. We discuss how our enumeration relates to theirs. We further compute the Tits building of the groups in question. Our computation is based on groups and indefinite quadratic forms and the algorithms used are explained.

Opposition diagrams for automorphisms of small spherical buildings

Abstract:An automorphism $\theta$ of a spherical building $\Delta$ is called \textit{capped} if it satisfies the following property: if there exist both type $J_1$ and $J_2$ simplices of $\Delta$ mapped onto opposite simplices by $\theta$ then there exists a type $J_1\cup J_2$ simplex of $\Delta$ mapped onto an opposite simplex by $\theta$. In previous work we showed that if $\Delta$ is a thick irreducible spherical building of rank at least $3$ with no Fano plane residues then every automorphism of $\Delta$ is capped. In the present work we consider the spherical buildings with Fano plane residues (the \textit{small buildings}). We show that uncapped automorphisms exist in these buildings and develop an enhanced notion of "opposition diagrams" to capture the structure of these automorphisms. Moreover we provide applications to the theory of "domesticity" in spherical buildings, including the complete classification of domestic automorphisms of small buildings of types $\mathsf{F}_4$ and $\mathsf{E}_6$.

Abstract:It is a fundamental problem in geometry to decide which moduli spaces of polarized algebraic varieties are embedded by their period maps as Zariski open subsets of locally Hermitian symmetric domains. In the present work we prove that the moduli space of Calabi–Yau threefolds coming from eight planes in ${\mathbb{P}^3}$ does not have this property. We show furthermore that the monodromy group of a good family is Zariski dense in the corresponding symplectic group. Moreover, we study a natural sublocus which we call hyperelliptic locus, over which the variation of Hodge structures is naturally isomorphic to wedge product of a variation of Hodge structures of weight one. It turns out the hyperelliptic locus does not extend to a Shimura subvariety of type III (Siegel space) within the moduli space. Besides general Hodge theory, representation theory and computational commutative algebra, one of the proofs depends on a new result on the tensor product decomposition of complex polarized variations of Hodge structures.

Abstract:We construct analytic surface symplectomorphisms with unstable elliptic fixed points; this solves a problem of Birkhoff (1927). More precisely, we construct analytic symplectomorphisms of the sphere and of the disk which are transitive, with respectively only 2 and 1 periodic points. This also solves problems of proposed by Herman (1998), Fayad-Katok (2004) and Fayad-Krikorian (2018). To establish these results, we introduce a principle that enables to realize, by an analytic symplectomorphism, properties which are $C^0$-realizable by the approximation by conjugacy method of Anosov-Katok.
