Abstract:The two-relaxation-time collision operator in discrete kinetic theory models collisions between particles by grouping them into pairs with anti-parallel velocities. It prescribes a linear relaxation towards equilibrium with one rate for the even combination of distribution functions for each pair, and another rate for the odd combination. We reformulate this collision operator using relaxation rates for the forward-propagating and backward-propagating combinations instead. An optimal pair of relaxation rates sets the forward-propagating combination of each pair of distributions to equilibrium. Only the backward-propagating non-equilibrium distributions remain. Applying this result twice gives closed discrete equations for evolving the macroscopic variables alone across three time levels. We split the equivalent equations into a first-order system: a conservation law and a kinetic equation for the flux. All other quantities are evaluated at equilibrium. We apply this formalism to the magnetic field in a lattice Boltzmann scheme for magnetohydrodynamics. The antisymmetric part of the kinetic equation matches the Maxwell–Faraday equation and Ohm's law. The symmetric part matches the hyperbolic divergence cleaning model. The discrete divergence of the magnetic field remains zero, to within round-off error, when the initial magnetic field is the discrete curl of a vector potential. We have thus constructed a mimetic or constrained transport scheme for magnetohydrodynamics.

Abstract:We find the twisted extensions of the symmetry algebra of the 2D Euler equation in the vorticity form and use them to construct new Lax representation for this equation. Then we generalize this result by considering the transformation Lie--Rinehart algebras generated by finite-dimensional subalgebras of the symmetry algebra and derive a family of Lax representations for the Euler equation. The family depends on functional parameters and contains a non-removable spectral parameter.

Spatial dynamics formulation of magnetohydrostatics

Abstract:We present a formalism for importing techniques from dynamical systems theory in the study of three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibria. By treating toroidal angle as time, we reformulate the equilibrium equations as hydrodynamic equations on the unit disc. They satisfy a variational principle and comprise a Lie-Poisson Hamiltonian system. We use the variational principle to find conservation laws for circulation, vorticity when pressure vanishes, and energy in axisymmetric domains. Combining the Lie-Poisson structure with a construction due to Scovel-Weinstein, we develop a theory of smoothed particle magnetohydrostatics (SPMHS). SPMHS identifies a large class of exact particle-swarm solutions of regularized spatial dynamics equations. The regularization occurs at finer scales than the smallest scales within the physical purview of ideal MHD. Crucially, the SPMHS equations of motion comprise a finite-dimensional Hamiltonian system, which side steps perennial roadblocks to a satisfactory theory of three-dimensional equilibria. In large-aspect-ratio domains, we show the spatial dynamics equations comprise a fast-slow system, where fast dynamics corresponds to the elliptic part of the equilibrium equations and slow dynamics corresponds to the hyperbolic part. Because the fast dynamics is formally normally hyperbolic, Fenichel theory suggests the presence of an exact slow manifold for the spatial dynamics equations that contains all physical solutions. We formally carry out reduction to the slow manifold, obtaining a spatial dynamics formulation for equilibrium Strauss reduced MHD at leading order and a hierarchy of corrections at any desired order in perturbation theory. In large aspect-ratio domains, finding periodic solutions of the slow manifold reduced equations represents a second novel pathway to finding three-dimensional equilibria.

Hamiltonian dynamics of vortex and magnetic lines in hydrodynamic type systems

Abstract:Vortex line and magnetic line representations are introduced for a description of flows in ideal hydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), respectively. For incompressible fluids, it is shown with the help of this transformation that the equations of motion for vorticity Omega and magnetic field follow from a variational principle. By means of this representation, it is possible to integrate the hydrodynamic type system with the Hamiltonian H=integral|Omega|dr and some other systems. It is also demonstrated that these representations allow one to remove from the noncanonical Poisson brackets, defined in the space of divergence-free vector fields, the degeneracy connected with the vorticity frozenness for the Euler equation and with magnetic field frozenness for ideal MHD. For MHD, a new Weber-type transformation is found. It is shown how this transformation can be obtained from the two-fluid model when electrons and ions can be considered as two independent fluids. The Weber-type transformation for ideal MHD gives the whole Lagrangian vector invariant. When this invariant is absent, this transformation coincides with the Clebsch representation analog introduced by V.E. Zakharov and E. A. Kuznetsov [Dokl. Ajad. Nauk 194, 1288 (1970) [Sov. Phys. Dokl. 15, 913 (1971)]].
Analytic solutions for the linearized first-order magnetohydrodynamics and implications for causality and stability

Abstract:We address the linear-mode analysis performed near an equilibrium configuration in the fluid rest frame with a dynamical magnetic field perturbed on a constant configuration. We develop a simple and general algorithm for an analytic solution search that works on an order-by-order basis in the derivative expansion. This method can be applied to general sets of hydrodynamic equations. Applying our method to the first-order relativistic magnetohydrodynamics, we demonstrate that the method finds a complete set of solutions. We obtain two sets of analytic solutions for the four and two coupled modes with seven dissipative transport coefficients. The former set has been missing in the literature for a long time due to the difficulties originating from coupled degrees of freedom and strong anisotropy provided by a magnetic field. The newly developed method resolves these difficulties. We also find that the small-momentum expansions of the solutions break down when the momentum direction is nearly perpendicular to an equilibrium magnetic field due to the presence of another small quantity, that is, a trigonometric function representing the anisotropy. We elaborate on the angle dependence of the solutions and provide alternative series representations that work near the right angle. This identifies the origin of a discrepancy found in recent works. Finally, we discuss the issues of causality and stability based on our analytic solutions and recent developments in the literature.

A high-order positivity-preserving single-stage single-step method for the ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations

Abstract:We propose a high-order finite difference weighted ENO (WENO) method for the ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations. The proposed method is single-stage, single-step, maintains a discrete divergence-free condition on the magnetic field, and has the capacity to preserve the positivity of the density and pressure. To accomplish this, we use a Taylor discretization of the Picard integral formulation (PIF) of the finite difference WENO method proposed in [SINUM, 53 (2015), pp. 1833--1856], where the focus is on a high-order discretization of the fluxes (as opposed to the conserved variables). We use the version where fluxes are expanded to third-order accuracy in time, and for the fluid variables space is discretized using the classical fifth-order finite difference WENO discretization. We use constrained transport in order to obtain divergence-free magnetic fields, which means that we simultaneously evolve the magnetohydrodynamic and magnetic potential equations, and set the magnetic field to be the (discrete) curl of the magnetic potential after each time step. In this work, we compute these curls to fourth-order accuracy. In order to retain a single-stage, single-step method, we develop a novel Lax-Wendroff discretization for the evolution of the magnetic potential, where we start with technology used for Hamilton-Jacobi equations in order to construct a non-oscillatory magnetic field. Positivity preservation is realized by introducing a parameterized flux limiter that considers a linear combination of high and low-order numerical fluxes. This positivity limiter lacks energy conservation. However, this limiter can be dropped for problems where the pressure does not become negative. We present two and three dimensional numerical results for several standard test problems. These results assert the robustness and verify the high-order of accuracy of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:Abstract The ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) as well as the ideal fluid dynamics is governed by the Hamilton equation with respect to the Lie-Poisson bracket. The Nambu bracket manifestly represents the Lie-Poisson structure in terms of derivative of the Casimir invariants. We construct a compact Nambu-bracket representation for the three-dimensional ideal MHD equations, with use of three Casimirs for the second Hamiltonians, the total entropy and the magnetic and cross helicities, whose coefficients are all constant. The Lie-Poisson bracket induced by this Nambu bracket does not coincide with the original one, but supplemented by terms with an auxiliary variable. The supplemented Lie-Poisson bracket qualifies the cross-helicity as the Casimir. By appealing to Noether’s theorem, we show that the cross-helicity is the integral invariant associated with the particle-relabeling symmetry. Employing the Lagrange label function, as the independent variable in the variational framework, facilitates implementation of the relabeling transformation. By incorporating the divergence symmetry, other known topological invariants are put on the same ground of Noether’s theorem.

Viscous regularization of the MHD equations

Abstract:Nonlinear conservation laws such as the system of ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations may develop singularities over time. In these situations, viscous regularization is a common approach to regain regularity of the solution. In this paper, we present a new viscous flux to regularize the MHD equations which holds many attractive properties. In particular, we prove that the proposed viscous flux preserves positivity of density and internal energy, satisfies the minimum entropy principle, is consistent with all generalized entropies, and is Galilean and rotationally invariant. We also provide a variation of the viscous flux that conserves angular momentum. To make the analysis more useful for numerical schemes, the divergence of the magnetic field is not assumed to be zero. Using continuous finite elements, we show several numerical experiments including contact waves and magnetic reconnection.

Variational discretizations of ideal magnetohydrodynamics in smooth regime using finite element exterior calculus

Abstract:We propose a new class of finite element approximations to ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations in smooth regime. Following variational approximations developed for fluid models in the last decade, our discretizations are built via a discrete variational principle mimicking the continuous Euler-Poincaré principle, and to further exploit the geometrical structure of the problem, vector fields are represented by their action as Lie derivatives on differential forms of any degree. The resulting semi-discrete approximations are shown to conserve the total mass, entropy and energy of the solutions for a wide class of finite element approximations. In addition, the divergence-free nature of the magnetic field is preserved in a pointwise sense and a time discretization is proposed, preserving those invariants and giving a reversible scheme at the fully discrete level. Numerical simulations are conducted to verify the accuracy of our approach and its ability to preserve the invariants for several test problems.

Abstract:In this work, the magnetohydrodynamics system is formally derived from two species Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system. By employing the hypocoercivity of the linear Boltzmann operator and overcoming the difficulties resulting from the singular Lorentz term, we first obtain the uniform estimates of solutions with respect to the Knudsen number and then derive the magnetohydrodynamics system from the dimensionless Valsov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system.

Abstract:Ferromagnetic magnetohydrodynamics concerns the study of conducting fluids with intrinsic magnetisation under the influence of a magnetic field. It is a generalisation of the magnetohydrodynamical equations and takes into account the dynamics of the magnetisation of a fluid. First proposed by Lingam (Lingam, `Dissipative effects in magnetohydrodynamical models with intrinsic magnetisation', Communications in Nonlinear Science and Numerical Simulation Vol 28, pp 223-231, 2015), the usual equations of magnetohydrodynamics, namely the Navier-Stokes equation and the induction equation, are coupled with the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. In this paper, the local existence, uniqueness and regularity of weak solutions to this system are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, an approach to simulating magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows based on the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is presented. The dynamics of the flow are simulated using a so-called multiple relaxation time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE), in which a source term is included for the Lorentz force. The evolution of the magnetic induction is represented by introducing a vector distribution function and then solving an appropriate lattice kinetic equation for this function. The solution of both distribution functions are obtained through a simple, explicit, and computationally efficient stream-and-collide procedure. The use of the MRT collision term enhances the numerical stability over that of a single relaxation time approach. To apply the methodology to solving practical problems, a new extrapolation-based method for imposing magnetic boundary conditions is introduced and a technique for simulating steady-state flows with low magnetic Prandtl number is developed. In order to resolve thin layers near the walls arising in the presence of high magnetic fields, a non-uniform gridding strategy is introduced through an interpolated-streaming step applied to both distribution functions. These advances are particularly important for applications in fusion engineering where liquid metal flows with low magnetic Prandtl numbers and high Hartmann numbers are introduced. A number of MHD benchmark problems, under various physical and geometrical conditions are presented, including 3-D MHD lid driven cavity flow, high Hartmann number flows and turbulent MHD flows, with good agreement with prior data. Due to the local nature of the method, the LBM also demonstrated excellent performance on parallel machines, with almost linear scaling up to 128 processors for a MHD flow problem.

Abstract:This paper first studies the admissible state set G of relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD). It paves a way for developing physical-constraints-preserving (PCP) schemes for the RMHD equations with the solutions in G. To overcome the difficulties arising from the extremely strong nonlinearities and no explicit formulas of the primitive variables and the flux vectors with respect to the conservative vector, two equivalent forms of G with explicit constraints on the conservative vector are skillfully discovered. The first is derived by analyzing roots of several polynomials and transferring successively them, and further used to prove the convexity of G with the aid of semi-positive definiteness of the second fundamental form of a hypersurface. While the second is derived based on the convexity, and then used to show the orthogonal invariance of G. The Lax-Friedrichs (LxF) splitting property does not hold generally for the nonzero magnetic field, but by a constructive inequality and pivotal techniques, we discover the generalized LxF splitting properties, combining the convex combination of some LxF splitting terms with a discrete divergence-free condition of the magnetic field. Based on the above analyses, several 1D and 2D PCP schemes are then studied. In the 1D case, a first-order accurate LxF-type scheme is first proved to be PCP under the Courant-FriedrichsLewy (CFL) condition, and then the high-order accurate PCP schemes are proposed via a PCP limiter. In the 2D case, the discrete divergence-free condition and PCP property are analyzed for a first-order accurate LxF-type scheme, and two sufficient conditions are derived for high-order accurate PCP schemes. Our analysis reveals in theory forthe first time that the discrete divergence-free condition is closely connected with the PCP property. Several numerical examples demonstrate the theoretical findings and the performance of numerical schemes.
A Well-Balanced Semi-implicit IMEX Finite Volume Scheme for Ideal Magnetohydrodynamics at All Mach Numbers

Abstract:We propose a second-order accurate semi-implicit and well-balanced finite volume scheme for the equations of ideal magnetohydrodynamics including gravitational source terms. The scheme treats all terms associated with the acoustic pressure implicitly while keeping the remaining terms part of the explicit sub-system. This semi-implicit approach makes the method particularly well suited for problems in the low Mach regime. We combine the semi-implicit scheme with the deviation well-balancing technique and prove that it maintains equilibrium solutions for the magnetohydrostatic case up to rounding errors. In order to preserve the divergence-free property of the magnetic field enforced by the solenoidal constraint, we incorporate a constrained transport method in the semi-implicit framework. Second order of accuracy is achieved by means of a standard spatial reconstruction technique with total variation diminishing property, and by an asymptotic preserving time stepping algorithm built upon the implicit-explicit Runge–Kutta time integrators. Numerical tests in the low Mach regime and near magnetohydrostatic equilibria support the low Mach and well-balanced properties of the numerical method.

Abstract:A numerical method, based on a discrete Boltzmann equation, is presented for solving the equations of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). The algorithm provides advantages similar to the cellular automaton method in that it is local and easily adapted to parallel computing environments. Because of much lower noise levels and less stringent requirements on lattice size, the method appears to be more competitive with traditional solution methods. Examples show that the model accurately reproduces both linear and nonlinear MHD phenomena.

Abstract:In this paper, the nonlinear boundary value problem (BVP) for the Jeffery-Hamel flow equations taking into consideration the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) effects is solved by using the modified Adomian decomposition method. We first transform the original two-dimensional MHD Jeffery-Hamel problem into an equivalent third-order BVP, then solve by the modified Adomian decomposition method for analytical approximations. Ultimately, the effects of Reynolds number and Hartmann number are discussed.
Relativistic Dissipative Magnetohydrodynamics from the Boltzmann equation for a two-component gas

Abstract:We derive the equations of motion of relativistic magnetohydrodynamics, as well as microscopic expressions for all of its transport coefficients, from the Boltzmann equation using the method of moments. In contrast to reference Phys. Rev. D 98(7) 2018, where a single component gas was considered, we perform our derivation for a locally neutral fluid composed of two massless particle species with opposite charges. We demonstrate that the magnetohydrodynamical equations of motion become dramatically different for this more realistic system. The shear-stress tensor no longer obeys a single differential equation; it breaks into three non-degenerate components with respect to the magnetic field, each evolving according to different dynamical equations. For large magnetic fields, we further show that the solution of this theory displays oscillatory behaviour that can no longer be described by an Israel-Stewart-like theory. Finally, we investigate the derived equations in a Bjorken flow scenario.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the 3D incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations and establish several logarithmically improved regularity criteria in the homogeneous Besov space. These criteria are based on certain assumptions made in the velocity field and pressure, respectively. The first result solely based on the velocity field indicates that the velocity field plays a dominant role in determining the regularity of weak solutions, when compared with the magnetic field.

Abstract:We give a structure preserving spatio-temporal discretization for incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) on the sphere. Discretization in space is based on the theory of geometric quantization, which yields a spatially discretized analogue of the MHD equations as a finite-dimensional Lie--Poisson system on the dual of the magnetic extension Lie algebra $\mathfrak{f}=\mathfrak{su}(N)\ltimes\mathfrak{su}(N)^{*}$. We also give accompanying structure preserving time discretizations for Lie--Poisson systems on the dual of semidirect product Lie algebras of the form $\mathfrak{f}=\mathfrak{g}\ltimes\mathfrak{g^{*}}$, where $\mathfrak{g}$ is a $J$-quadratic Lie algebra. Critically, the time integration method is free of computationally costly matrix exponentials. We prove that the full method preserves the underlying geometry, namely the Lie--Poisson structure and all the Casimirs. To showcase the method, we apply it to two models for magnetic fluids: incompressible magnetohydrodynamics and Hazeltine's model.
