Abstract:Under certain circumstances, the equations for the magnetic field lines can be recast in a canonical form, after defining a suitable field line Hamiltonian. This analogy is extremely useful for dealing with a variety of problems involving magnetically confined plasmas, like in tokamaks and other toroidal devices, where there is usually one symmetric coordinate which plays the role of time in the canonical equations. In this tutorial paper we review the basics of the Hamiltonian description for magnetic field lines, emphasizing the role of a variational principle and gauge invariance. We present representative applications of the formalism, using cylindrical and magnetic flux coordinates in tokamak plasmas.

Riemannian geometrical constraints on magnetic vortex filaments in plasmas

Abstract:Two theorems on the Riemannian geometrical constraints on vortex magnetic filaments acting as dynamos in (MHD) flows are presented. The use of Gauss-Mainard-Codazzi equations allows us to investigate in detail the influence of curvature and torsion of vortex filaments in the MHD dynamos. This application follows closely previous applications to Heisenberg spin equation to the investigations in magnetohydrostatics given by Schief (Plasma Physics J. 10, 7, 2677 (2003)). The Lorentz force on vortex filaments are computed and the ratio between the forces along different directions are obtained in terms of the ratio between the corresponding magnetic fields which equals also the ratio between the Frenet torsion and vortex line curvature. A similar relation between Lorentz forces, magnetic fields and twist, which is proportional to total torsion integral has been obtained by Ricca (Fluid Dyn. Res. 36,319 (2005)) in the case of inflexional desiquilibrium of magnetic flux-tubes. This is due to the fact that the magnetic vortex lines are a limit case of the magnetic flux-tubes when the lenght of the tube is much greater than the radius of the tube. Magnetic helicity equation of the filament allows us again to determine the magnetic fields ratio from Frenet curvature and torsion of the vortex lines.

Abstract:We present two generalized hybrid kinetic-Hall magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) models describing the interaction of a two-fluid bulk plasma, which consists of thermal ions and electrons, with energetic, suprathermal ion populations described by Vlasov dynamics. The dynamics of the thermal components are governed by standard fluid equations in the Hall MHD limit with the electron momentum equation providing an Ohm's law with Hall and electron pressure terms involving a gyrotropic electron pressure tensor. The coupling of the bulk, low-energy plasma with the energetic particle dynamics is accomplished through the current density (current coupling scheme; CCS) and the ion pressure tensor appearing in the momentum equation (pressure coupling scheme; PCS) in the first and the second model, respectively. The CCS is a generalization of two well-known models, because in the limit of vanishing energetic and thermal ion densities, we recover the standard Hall MHD and the hybrid kinetic-ions/fluid-electron model, respectively. This provides us with the capability to study in a continuous manner, the global impact of the energetic particles in a regime extending from vanishing to dominant energetic particle densities. The noncanonical Hamiltonian structures of the CCS and PCS, which can be exploited to study equilibrium and stability properties through the energy-Casimir variational principle, are identified. As a first application here, we derive a generalized Hall MHD Grad–Shafranov–Bernoulli system for translationally symmetric equilibria with anisotropic electron pressure and kinetic effects owing to the presence of energetic particles using the PCS.

Spatial dynamics formulation of magnetohydrostatics

Abstract:We present a formalism for importing techniques from dynamical systems theory in the study of three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibria. By treating toroidal angle as time, we reformulate the equilibrium equations as hydrodynamic equations on the unit disc. They satisfy a variational principle and comprise a Lie-Poisson Hamiltonian system. We use the variational principle to find conservation laws for circulation, vorticity when pressure vanishes, and energy in axisymmetric domains. Combining the Lie-Poisson structure with a construction due to Scovel-Weinstein, we develop a theory of smoothed particle magnetohydrostatics (SPMHS). SPMHS identifies a large class of exact particle-swarm solutions of regularized spatial dynamics equations. The regularization occurs at finer scales than the smallest scales within the physical purview of ideal MHD. Crucially, the SPMHS equations of motion comprise a finite-dimensional Hamiltonian system, which side steps perennial roadblocks to a satisfactory theory of three-dimensional equilibria. In large-aspect-ratio domains, we show the spatial dynamics equations comprise a fast-slow system, where fast dynamics corresponds to the elliptic part of the equilibrium equations and slow dynamics corresponds to the hyperbolic part. Because the fast dynamics is formally normally hyperbolic, Fenichel theory suggests the presence of an exact slow manifold for the spatial dynamics equations that contains all physical solutions. We formally carry out reduction to the slow manifold, obtaining a spatial dynamics formulation for equilibrium Strauss reduced MHD at leading order and a hierarchy of corrections at any desired order in perturbation theory. In large aspect-ratio domains, finding periodic solutions of the slow manifold reduced equations represents a second novel pathway to finding three-dimensional equilibria.

Abstract:A four-field reduced model of single helicity, incompressible MHD is derived in cylindrical geometry. An appropriate set of noncanonical variables is found, and the Hamiltonian, the Lie-Poisson bracket and the Casimir invariants are clarified. Detailed proofs of properties of the Lie-Poisson bracket, (i) antisymmetry, (ii) Leibniz rule, and (iii) Jacobi identity, are given. Two applications are presented: the first is that the local dispersion relation of axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamics (MRI) is properly reproduced, and the second is that linear stability analyses including negative-energy MRI were successfully performed.

Abstract:We address the linear-mode analysis performed near an equilibrium configuration in the fluid rest frame with a dynamical magnetic field perturbed on a constant configuration. We develop a simple and general algorithm for an analytic solution search that works on an order-by-order basis in the derivative expansion. This method can be applied to general sets of hydrodynamic equations. Applying our method to the first-order relativistic magnetohydrodynamics, we demonstrate that the method finds a complete set of solutions. We obtain two sets of analytic solutions for the four and two coupled modes with seven dissipative transport coefficients. The former set has been missing in the literature for a long time due to the difficulties originating from coupled degrees of freedom and strong anisotropy provided by a magnetic field. The newly developed method resolves these difficulties. We also find that the small-momentum expansions of the solutions break down when the momentum direction is nearly perpendicular to an equilibrium magnetic field due to the presence of another small quantity, that is, a trigonometric function representing the anisotropy. We elaborate on the angle dependence of the solutions and provide alternative series representations that work near the right angle. This identifies the origin of a discrepancy found in recent works. Abstract:Owing to three conditions (namely: (a) the velocity is represented by sum of irrotational and solenoidal components; (b) the fluid is barotropic; (c) a bath with the fluid undergoes vertical vibrations) the Navier-Stokes equation admits reduction to the modified Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The modification term is the Bohmian(quantum) potential. This reduction opens possibility to define a complex-valued function, named the wave function, which is a solution of the Schrödinger equation. The solenoidal component being added to the momentum operator poses itself as a vector potential by analogy with the magnetic vector potential. The vector potential is represented by the solenoidal velocity multiplied by mass of the fluid element. Vortex tubes, rings, and balls along with the wave function guiding these objects are solutions of this equation. Motion of the vortex balls along the Bohmian trajectories gives a model of droplets moving on the fluid surface. A peculiar fluid is the superfluid physical vacuum. It contains Bose particle-antiparticle pairs. Vortex lines presented by electron-positron pairs are main torque objects. Bundles of the vortex lines can transmit a torque from one rotating disk to other unmoved disk.

Wave propagation and transformation in the frame of magnetohydrodynamics with a vortex electric field

Abstract:Bright transient objects in different wave bands have been discovered in recent years. To explain these short (from ms to s), and very powerful events different models, galactic and extragalactic, have been considered. One of popular model is based on the suggestion of transformation of the magnetized plasma blob, presumably a MHD shock wave, moving with relativistic speed, into electromagnetic pulse after collision with some obstacle, or at entering in media with different properties. Such transformation cannot be described in the frame of classical MHD equations, which don't contain the displacement current, and don't include such transformation. Updating of the classic MHD equations by using of full set of Maxwell equation with displacement current, made recently by several authors, gave a possibility to describe hydrodynamic phenomena, together with electromagnetic ones by the same set of equations. Here we apply these equations for study of propagation of different waves with account of displacement current, and of transformation between different kind of waves in the nonuniform media. We derive a dispersion equation describing a propagation of a weak linear wave in a uniform magnetized plasma, and consider in details the cases with perpendicular and parallel motion to the magnetic field. It contains MHD, HD, Alfven and EM waves in the limiting cases, and some new types of behaviour in a general situation. We consider a plasma with zero viscosity and heat conductivity, with a finite scalar electric conductivity. We have shown, that transformation of MHD into EM wave may happen only in a highly magnetized plasma, and have found the region of parameters, where no waves exist, and only damping static perturbations may be present.

Abstract:The dynamics of the gauge vortex with arbitrary form of a contour is considered in the framework of the nonrelativistic Abelian Higgs model, including the possibility of the gauge field interaction with the fermion asymmetric background. The equations for the time derivatives of the curvature and the torsion of the vortex contour generalizing the Betchov-Da Rios equations in hydrodynamics, are obtained. They are applied to study the conservation of helicity of the gauge field forming the vortex, twist, and writhe numbers of the vortex contour. It is shown that the conservation of helicity is broken when both terms in the equation of the vortex motion are present, first due to the exchange of excitations of the phase and modulus of the scalar field and the second one due to the coupling of the gauge field forming the vortex, with the fermion asymmetric background.

Abstract:The Generalized Hasegawa-Mima (GHM) equation, which generalizes the standard Hasegawa-Mima (HM) equation, is a nonlinear equation describing the evolution of drift wave turbulence in curved magnetic fields. The GHM equation can be obtained from a drift wave turbulence ordering that does not involve ordering conditions on spatial derivatives of the magnetic field or the plasma density, and it is therefore appropriate to describe the evolution of electrostatic turbulence in strongly inhomogeneous magnetized plasmas. In this work, we discuss the noncanonical Hamiltonian structure of the GHM equation, and obtain conditions for the nonlinear stability of steady solutions through the energy-Casimir stability criterion. These results are then applied to describe drift waves and infer the existence of stable toroidal zonal flows with radial shear in dipole magnetic fields.

Abstract:A new class of exact solutions of hydrodynamic equations for an incompressible fluid (gas) at the presence of a bulk sink and uprising vertical flows of matter is considered. The acceleration of the rotation velocity of classical non-stationary vortices is conditioned by the joint action of the convective and Coriolis hydrodynamic forces (accelerations), which appear due to the converging radial flows of the matter in the region of a bulk sink. It is shown that there exist velocity profiles that nullify viscous terms in the Navier-Stokes equations and represent a vortex structure with a "rigid-body" rotation of its core and converging radial flows. The concept of non-stationary vortices in open systems is applied to description of origination of power atmospheric vortices (whirlwinds, tornados, and typhoons). In the classical hydrodynamics a favorable condition for the origination and existence of such vortices is the exact nullification of the terms, which describe kinematic viscosity of an incompressible fluid. Such flows have the minimal rate of energy dissipation that corresponds to the "minimum entropy production principle", and therefore may relatively easily appear in favorable natural conditions.

Abstract:The study of vortex dynamics using a variational formulation has an extensive history and a rich literature. The standard Hamiltonian function that describes the dynamics of interacting point vortices of constant strength is the Kirchhoff-Routh (KR) function. This function was not obtained from basic definitions of classical mechanics (i.e., in terms of kinetic and potential energies), but it was rather devised to match the already known differential equations of motion for constant-strength point vortices given by the Bio-Savart law. Instead, we develop a variational formulation for vortex dynamics based on the principle of least action. As an application, we consider two-dimensional massive vortices of constant strength. Interestingly, the obtained equations of motion are second-order differential equations defining vortex accelerations, not velocities. The resulting dynamics are more complex than those obtained from the KR formulation. For example, a pair of equal-strength, counter-rotating vortices could be initialized with different velocities, resulting in interesting patterns. Also, the developed model easily admits external body forces. When an electrodynamic force is considered, the interaction between it and the hydrodynamic vortex force leads to a rich, counterintuitive behavior that could not be handled by the KR formulation. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevFluids.9.034701 ©2024 American Physical Society

A quaternionic unification of electromagnetism and hydrodynamics

Abstract:We have derived energy conservation equations from the quaternionic Newton's law that is compatible with Lorentz transformation. This Newton's law yields directly the Euler equation and other equations governing the fluid motion. With this formalism, the pressure contributes positively to the dynamics of the system in the same way mass does. Hydrodynamic equations are derived from Maxwell's equations by adopting an electromagnetohydrodynamics (EMH) analogy. In this analogy the hydroelectric field is related to the local acceleration of the fluid and the Lorentz gauge is related to the incompressible fluid condition. An analogous Lorentz gauge in hydrodynamics is proposed. We have shown that the vorticity of the fluid is developed whenever the particle local acceleration of the fluid deviates from the velocity direction. We have also shown that Lorentz force in electromagnetism corresponds to Euler force in fluids. Moreover, we have obtained Gauss's, Faraday's and Ampere's -like laws in Hydrodynamics.

Abstract:An open problem of the derivation of the relativistic Vlasov equation for systems of charged particles moving with velocities up to the speed of light and creating the electromagnetic field in accordance with the full set of the Maxwell equations is considered. Moreover, the method of derivation is illustrated on the non-relativistic kinetic model. Independent derivation of the relativistic hydrodynamics is also demonstrated. The key role of these derivations of the hydrodynamic and kinetic equations includes the explicit operator of averaging on the physically infinitesimal volume suggested by L.S. Kuzmenkov.

Abstract:The Hamiltonian formulations for the perturbed Vlasov-Maxwell equations and the perturbed ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations are expressed in terms of the perturbation derivative $\partial{\cal F}/\partial\epsilon \equiv [{\cal F}, {\cal S}]$ of an arbitrary functional ${\cal F}[\vb{\psi}]$ of the Vlasov-Maxwell fields $\vb{\psi} = ({\sf f},{\bf E},{\bf B})$ or the ideal MHD fields $\vb{\psi} = (\rho,{\bf u},s,{\bf B})$, which are assumed to depend continuously on the (dimensionless) perturbation parameter $\epsilon$. Here, $[\;,\;]$ denotes the functional Poisson bracket for each set of plasma equations and the perturbation {\it action} functional ${\cal S}$ is said to generate dynamically accessible perturbations of the plasma fields. The new Hamiltonian perturbation formulation introduces a framework for functional perturbation methods in plasma physics and highlights the crucial roles played by polarization and magnetization in Vlasov-Maxwell and ideal MHD perturbation theories. One application considered in this paper is a formulation of plasma stability that guarantees dynamical accessibility and leads to a natural generalization to higher-order perturbation theory.

Abstract:We investigate the geometry of classical Hamiltonian systems immersed in a magnetic field in three-dimensional Riemannian configuration spaces. We prove that these systems admit non-trivial symplectic-Haantjes manifolds, which are symplectic manifolds endowed with an algebra of Haantjes (1,1)-tensors. These geometric structures allow us to determine separation variables for known systems algorithmically; besides, the underlying Stäckel geometry is used to construct new families of integrable Hamiltonian models immersed in a magnetic field.

Abstract:We generalize a recently introduced formulation of relativistic spinful and vortical fluid to relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). We refer to it as the "spinful-vortical MHD" (SVMHD). The aim is to scrutinize the interplay between the vorticity, magnetic field, and spin, which is treated as a quantum object, in contrast to other formulations of spin hydrodynamics. To this purpose, we first perform a standard entropy current analysis up to first-order gradient expansion, O(∂) as well as O(ħ∂) , where ħ is the Planck constant. In contrast to alternative formulations of spin MHD, in the absence of vorticity, the zeroth-order energy-momentum tensor includes an additional magnetovorticity mixed term and reduces, as expected, to the energy-momentum tensor of MHD. We show that in the first order of gradient expansion, 36 dissipative transport coefficients appear. They satisfy certain constraints that guarantee the positive definiteness of the entropy production rate. We then modify the formulation of SVMHD by replacing the magnetic part of the thermal vorticity tensor with its electric part. Carrying out the same analysis as in the standard formulation, we show that in this case, the first-order constitutive relations consist of 11 nondissipative Hall-like coefficients, apart from 25 dissipative coefficients. Abstract:Condensed matter systems can host emergent `vacua' with particles, fields and dimension different from that of the universe we inhabit. Motivated by the appearance of emergent gauge fields with both electric and magnetic charges, we consider the fate of electromagnetism in two dimensions in such a setting. We find that generically electromagnetic fields are damped due to resistive effects. However, we can still identify a magnetohydrodynamic regime. It exhibits magnetosonic waves which, unlike in $d=3$, are isotropic, to which there is a contribution from the odd viscosity coefficient present in the system. Further, we find a dynamo action, which unlike in $d=3$ requires compressibility of the flow.
