Abstract:We introduce an abstract framework for forcing over a free Suslin tree with suborders of products of forcings which add some structure to the tree using countable approximations. The main ideas of this framework are consistency, separation, and the Key Property. We give three applications of this framework: specializing derived trees of a free Suslin tree, adding uncountable almost disjoint subtrees of a free Suslin tree, and adding almost disjoint automorphisms of a free Suslin tree. Using the automorphism forcing, we construct a model in which there is an almost Kurepa Suslin tree and a non-saturated Aronszajn tree, and there does not exist a Kurepa tree. This model solves open problems due to Bilaniuk, Moore, and Jin and Shelah.

Abstract:For uncountable downwards closed subtrees $U$ and $W$ of an $\omega_1$-tree $T$, we say that $U$ and $W$ are strongly almost disjoint if their intersection is a finite union of countable chains. The tree $T$ is strongly non-saturated if there exists a strongly almost disjoint family of $\omega_2$-many uncountable downwards closed subtrees of $T$. In this article we construct a c.c.c. forcing which adds a Suslin tree together with a family of $\omega_2$-many strongly almost disjoint automorphisms of it (and thus the square of the Suslin tree is strongly non-saturated). To achieve this goal, we introduce a new idea called $\rho$-separation, which is an adaptation to the finite context of the notion of separation which was recently introduced by Stejskalová and the first author for the purpose of adding automorphisms of a tree with a forcing with countable conditions.

Abstract:We show it is consistent that there is a Souslin tree $S$ such that after forcing with $S$, $S$ is Kurepa and for all clubs $C \subset \omega_1$, $S\upharpoonright C$ is rigid. This answers Fuchs's questions in Club degrees of rigidity and almost Kurepa trees. Moreover, we show it is consistent with $\diamondsuit$ that for every Souslin tree there is a dense $X \subset S$ which does not have a copy of $S$. This is related to a question due to Baumgartner.

Abstract:We consider a transitive relation on the power set of $\omega_1$ and show if there is a maximal element with respect to this relation then there is a Kurepa tree with no Aronszajn subtree. We also show that if there is a maximal subset of $\omega_1$, then there are Kurepa trees which are not club isomorphic. These maximal subsets of $\omega_1$ exist in many known models that are obtained from the constructible universe without large cardinal assumptions. For instance, whenever $\alpha_0 \in \omega_1$ and $X \subset \omega_1$ are such that $\omega_1^{\textsc{L}[X \cap \alpha_0]} = \omega_1, \omega_2^{\textsc{L}[X]} = \omega_2$ and $\textsc{V}$ is a semiproper forcing extension of $\textsc{L}[X]$ then $X$ is maximal in $\textsc{V}$.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the problem of the distributivity of Kurepa trees. We show that it is consistent that there are Kurepa trees and for every Kurepa tree there is a small forcing notion which adds a branch to it without collapsing cardinals. On the other hand, we derive a proper forcing notion for making an arbitrary Kurepa tree into a non-distributive tree without collapsing $\aleph_1$ and $\aleph_2$.

Abstract:Building upon work of Lücke and Schlicht, we study (higher) Kurepa trees through the lens of higher descriptive set theory, focusing in particular on various perfect set properties and representations of sets of branches through trees as continuous images of function spaces. Answering a question of Lücke and Schlicht, we prove that it is consistent with $\mathsf{CH}$ that there exist $\omega_2$-Kurepa trees and yet, for every $\omega_2$-Kurepa tree $T \subseteq {^{<\omega_2}}\omega_2$, the set $[T] \subseteq {^{\omega_2}}\omega_2$ of cofinal branches through $T$ is not a continuous image of ${^{\omega_2}}\omega_2$. We also produce models indicating that the existence of Kurepa trees is not necessary to produce closed subsets of ${^{\omega_1}}\omega_1$ failing to satisfy strong perfect set properties, and prove a number of consistency results regarding \emph{full} and \emph{superthin} trees.

Abstract:In this paper we aim to compare Kurepa trees and Aronszajn trees. Moreover, we analyze the affect of large cardinal assumptions on this comparison. Using the the method of walks on ordinals, we will show it is consistent with ZFC that there is a Kurepa tree and every Kurepa tree contains an Aronszajn subtree, if there is an inaccessible cardinal. This is stronger than Komjath's theorem that asserts the same consistency from two inaccessible cardinals. Moreover, we prove it is consistent with ZFC that there is a Kurepa tree $T$ such that if $U \subset T$ is a Kurepa tree with the inherited order from $T$, then $U$ has an Aronszajn subtree. This theorem uses no large cardinal assumption. Our last theorem immediately implies the following: assume $\textrm{MA}_{\omega_2}$ holds and $\omega_2$ is not a Mahlo cardinal in $\textsc{L}$. Then there is a Kurepa tree with the property that every Kurepa subset has an Aronszajn subtree. Our work entails proving a new lemma about Todorcevic's $\rho$ function which might be useful in other contexts.

Abstract:We investigate some versions of amoeba for tree-forcings in the generalized Cantor and Baire spaces. This answers [10, Question 3.20] and generalizes a line of research that in the standard case has been studied in [11], [13], and [7]. Moreover, we also answer questions posed in [3] by Friedman, Khomskii, and Kulikov, about the relationships between regularity properties at uncountable cardinals. We show $\Sigma_1^1$-counterexamples to some regularity properties related to trees without club splitting. In particular we prove a strong relationship between the Ramsey and the Baire properties, in slight contrast with the standard case.
Some Results on Finitely Splitting Subtrees of Aronszajn Trees

Abstract:For any $2 \le n < \omega$, we introduce a forcing poset using generalized promises which adds a normal $n$-splitting subtree to a $(\ge \! n)$-splitting normal Aronszajn tree. Using this forcing poset, we prove several consistency results concerning finitely splitting subtrees of Aronszajn trees. For example, it is consistent that there exists an infinitely splitting Suslin tree whose topological square is not Lindelöf, which solves an open problem due to Marun. For any $2 < n < \omega$, it is consistent that every $(\ge \! n)$-splitting normal Aronszajn tree contains a normal $n$-splitting subtree, but there exists a normal infinitely splitting Aronszajn tree which contains no $(< \! n)$-splitting subtree. To show the latter consistency result, we prove a forcing iteration preservation theorem related to not adding new small-splitting subtrees of Aronszajn trees.

Abstract:Furstenberg-Weiss have extended Szemerédi's theorem on arithmetic progressions to trees by showing that a large subset of the tree contains arbitrarily long arithmetic subtrees. We study higher dimensional versions that analogously extend the multidimensional Szemerédi theorem by demonstrating the existence of certain arithmetic structures in large subsets of a cartesian product of trees.

Abstract:A $\kappa$-tree is said to be full if each of its limit levels omits no more than one potential branch. Kunen asked whether a full $\kappa$-Souslin tree may consistently exist. Shelah gave an affirmative answer of height a strong limit Mahlo cardinal. Here, it is shown that these trees may consistently exist at small cardinals. Indeed, there can be $\aleph_3$ many full $\aleph_2$-trees such that the product of any countably many of them is an $\aleph_2$-Souslin tree.

Abstract:We prove that the existence of a non-special tree of size is equivalent to the existence of an uncountably chromatic graph with no minor of size , establishing a connection between the special tree number and the uncountable Hadwiger conjecture. Also characterizations of Aronszajn, Kurepa and Suslin trees using graphs are deduced. A new generalized notion of connectedness for graphs is introduced using which we are able to characterize weakly compact cardinals.

Abstract:We initiate the study of the spectrum $Vspec(\kappa)$ of sets that can be realized as the vanishing levels $V(T)$ of a normal $\kappa$-tree $T$. The latter is an invariant in the sense that if $T$ and $T'$ are club-isomorphic, then the symmetric difference of $V(T)$ and $V(T')$ is nonstationary. Additional features of this invariant imply that $Vspec(\kappa)$ is closed under finite unions and intersections. The set $V(T)$ must be stationary for an homogeneous normal $\kappa$-Aronszajn tree $T$, and if there exists a special $\kappa$-Aronszajn tree, then there exists one $T$ that is homogeneous and satisfies $V(T)=\kappa$ (modulo clubs). It is consistent (from large cardinals) that there is an $\aleph_2$-Souslin tree, and yet $V(T)$ is co-stationary for every $\aleph_2$-tree $\mathbf T$. Both $V(T)=\emptyset$ and $V(T)=\kappa$ (modulo clubs) are shown to be feasible using $\kappa$-Souslin trees even at some large cardinal close to a weakly compact. It is also possible to have a family of $2^\kappa$ many $\kappa$-Souslin trees for which the corresponding family of vanishing levels forms an antichain modulo clubs.

Abstract:We demonstrated that the transcriptional expression of MT1-MMP, MMP-9, cathepsin K, and TRAP in highly enriched osteoclasts were regulated by different matrix proteins that bind to integrin on osteoclast, such as collagen type I (CoI), fibronectin (FN), vitronectin (VN), osteopontin (OPN), and ivory. Results suggested that the OPN-integrin αVβ3 binding plays a more important role than CoI-α2β1 binding in the regulation of osteoclast activity.

Abstract:We prove a conjectured asymptotic formula of Kuperberg from the representation theory of the Lie algebra $G_2$. Given a non-negative sequence $(a_n)_{n\geq 1}$, the identity $B(x)=A(xB(x))$ for generating functions $A(x)=1+\sum_{n\geq 1} a_n x^n$ and $B(x)=1+\sum_{n\geq 1} b_n x^n$ determines the number $b_n$ of rooted planar trees with $n$ vertices such that each vertex having $i$ children can have one of $a_i$ distinct colors. Kuperberg proved in \cite{Kuperberg} that this identity holds in the case that $b_n=\dim \text{Inv}_{G_2} (V(\lambda_1)^{\otimes n})$, where $V(\lambda_1)$ is the 7-dimensional fundamental representation of $G_2$, and $a_n$ is the number of triangulations of a regular $n$-gon such that each internal vertex has degree at least $6$. He also observed that $\limsup_{n\to\infty}\sqrt[n]{a_n}\leq 7/B(1/7)$ and conjectured that this estimate is sharp, or in terms of power series, that the radius of convergence of $A(x)$ is exactly $B(1/7)/7$. We prove this conjecture by introducing a new criterion for sharpness in the analogous estimate for general power series $A(x)$ and $B(x)$ satisfying $B(x)=A(xB(x))$. Moreover, by way of singularity analysis performed on a recently-discovered generating function for $B(x)$, we significantly refine the conjecture by deriving an asymptotic formula for the sequence $(a_n)$.

Abstract:We prove the consistency, assuming an ineffable cardinal, of the statement that CH holds and any two normal countably closed ω 2 -Aronszajn trees are club isomorphic. This work generalizes to higher cardinals the property of Abraham–Shelah [1] that any two normal ω 1 -Aronszajn trees are club isomorphic, which follows from PFA. The statement that any two normal countably closed ω 2 -Aronszajn trees are club isomorphic implies that there are no ω 2 -Suslin trees, so our proof also expands on the method of Laver–Shelah [5] for obtaining the ω 2 -Suslin hypothesis.
