Abstract:We improve unconditional estimates on $\Delta_k(x)$, the remainder term of the generalised divisor function, for large $k$. In particular, we show that $\Delta_k(x) \ll x^{1 - 1.889k^{-2/3}}$ for all sufficiently large fixed $k$.

Abstract:Suppose $k\geqslant3$ is an integer. Let $\tau_k(n)$ be the number of ways $n$ can be written as a product of $k$ fixed factors. For any fixed integer $r\geqslant2$, we have the asymptotic formula \begin{equation*} \sum_{n_1,\cdots,n_r\leqslant x}\tau_k(n_1 \cdots n_r)=x^r\sum_{\ell=0}^{r(k-1)}d_{r,k,\ell}(\log x)^{\ell}+O(x^{r-1+\alpha_k+\varepsilon}), \end{equation*} where $d_{r,k,\ell}$ and $0<\alpha_k<1$ are computable constants. In this paper we study the mean square of $\Delta_{r,k}(x)$ and give upper bounds for $k\geqslant4$ and an asymptotic formula for the mean square of $\Delta_{r,3}(x)$. We also get an upper bound for the third power moment of $\Delta_{r,3}(x)$. Moreover, we study the first power moment of $\Delta_{r,3}(x)$ and then give a result for the sign changes of it.

Abstract:We prove some distribution results for the $k$-fold divisor function in arithmetic progressions to moduli that exceed the square-root of length $X$ of the sum, with appropriate constrains and averaging on the moduli, saving a power of $X$ from the trivial bound. On assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we obtain uniform power saving error terms that are independent of $k$. We follow and specialize Y.T. Zhang's method on bounded gaps between primes to our setting. Our arguments are essentially self-contained, with the exception on the use of Deligne's work on the Riemann Hypothesis for varieties over finite fields. In particular, we avoid the reliance on Siegel's theorem, leading to some effective estimates.

Abstract: Let $d(n; r_1, q_1, r_2, q_2)$ be the number of factorization $n=n_1n_2$ satisfying $n_i\equiv r_i\pmod{q_i}$ ($i=1,2$) and $\Delta(x; r_1, q_1, r_2, q_2)$ be the error term of the summatory function of $d(n; r_1, q_1, r_2, q_2)$ with $x\geq (q_1q_2)^{1+\varepsilon}, 1\leq r_i\leq q_i$, and $(r_i, q_i)=1$ ($i=1, 2$). We study the power moments and sign changes of $\Delta(x; r_1, q_1, r_2, q_2)$, and prove that for a sufficiently large constant $C$, $\Delta(q_1q_2x; r_1, q_1, r_2, q_2)$ changes sign in the interval $[T,T+C\sqrt{T}]$ for any large $T$. Meanwhile, we show that for a small constant $c'$, there exist infinitely many subintervals of length $c'\sqrt{T}\log^{-7}T$ in $[T,2T]$ where $\pm \Delta(q_1q_2x; r_1, q_1, r_2, q_2)> c_5x^\frac{1}{4}$ always holds.
Sign changes of the error term in the Piltz divisor problem

Abstract:We study the function $\Delta_k(x):=\sum_{n\leq x} d_k(n) - \mbox{Res}_{s=1} ( \zeta^k(s) x^s/s )$, where $k\geq 3$ is an integer, $d_k(n)$ is the $k$-fold divisor function, and $\zeta(s)$ is the Riemann zeta-function. For a large parameter $X$, we show that if the Lindelöf hypothesis is true, then there exist at least $X^{\frac{1}{k(k-1)}-\varepsilon}$ disjoint subintervals of $[X,2X]$, each of length $X^{1-\frac{1}{k}-\varepsilon}$, such that $|\Delta_k(x)|\gg x^{\frac{1}{2}-\frac{1}{2k}}$ for all $x$ in the subinterval. If the Riemann hypothesis is true, then we can improve the length of the subintervals to $\gg X^{1-\frac{1}{k}} (\log X)^{-k^2-2}$. These results may be viewed as higher-degree analogues of theorems of Heath-Brown and Tsang, who studied the case $k=2$, and Cao, Tanigawa, and Zhai, who studied the case $k=3$. The first main ingredient of our proofs is a bound for the second moment of $\Delta_k(x+h)-\Delta_k(x)$. We prove this bound using a method of Selberg and a general lemma due to Saffari and Vaughan. The second main ingredient is a bound for the fourth moment of $\Delta_k(x)$, which we obtain by combining a method of Tsang with a technique of Lester.

Abstract:Let $d^{(k)}(n)$ be the $k$-free divisor function for integer $k\ge2$. Let $a$ be a nonzero integer. In this paper, we establish an asymptotic formula \begin{equation*} \sum_{p\leq x} d^{(k)}(p-a) =b_k \cdot x+O\left(\frac{x}{\log x}\right) \end{equation*} related to the Titchmarsh divisor problem, where $b_k$ is a positive constant dependent on $k$ and $a$. For the proof, we apply a result of Felix and show a general asymptotic formula for a class of arithmetic functions including the unitary divisor function, $k$-free divisor function and the proper Pillai's function.

Abstract:Let $d_k(n) = \sum_{n_1 \cdots n_k = n}1$ be the $k$-fold divisor function. We call a function $f:\mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{C}$ a $d_k$-bounded multiplicative function, if $f$ is multiplicative and $|f(n)| \leq d_k(n)$ for every $n \in \mathbb{N}$. In this paper we improve Mangerel's results which extend the Matomäki-Radziwi{łł} theorem to divisor bounded multiplicative functions. In particular, we prove that for sufficiently large $X \geq 2$, any $\epsilon>0$ and $h \geq (\log X)^{k \log k - k + 1 + \epsilon}$ , we have $$ \frac{1}{h}\sum_{x<n\leq x+h}d_k(n)-\frac{1}{x}\sum_{x<n\leq 2x}d_{k}(n) = o(\log^{k-1} x) $$ for almost all $x \in [X,2X]$. We also demonstrate that the exponent $k \log k-k+1$ is optimal.

Abstract:We study the distribution functions of several classical error terms in analytic number theory, focusing on the remainder term in the Dirichlet divisor problem $\Delta(x)$. We first bound the discrepancy between the distribution function of $\Delta(x)$ and that of a corresponding probabilistic random model, improving results of Heath-Brown and Lau. We then determine the shape of its large deviations in a certain uniform range, which we believe to be the limit of our method, given our current knowledge about the linear relations among the $\sqrt{n}$ for square-free positive integers $n$. Finally, we obtain similar results for the error terms in the Gauss circle problem and in the second moment of the Riemann zeta function on the critical line.

Abstract:Let $\nu_y(n)$ denote the number of distinct prime factors of $n$ that are $<y$. For $k$ a positive integer, and for $k+2\leq y\leq x$, let $S_{-k}(x,y)$ denote the sum \begin{eqnarray*} S_{-k}(x,y):=\sum_{n\leq x}(-k)^{\nu_y(n)}. \end{eqnarray*} In this paper, we describe our recent results on the asymptotic behavior of $S_{-k}(x,y)$ for $k+2\leq y\leq x$, and $x$ sufficiently large. There is a crucial difference in the asymptotic behavior of $S_{-k}(x,y)$ when $k+1$ is a prime and $k+1$ is composite, and this makes the problem particularly interesting. The results are derived utilizing a combination of the Buchstab-de Bruijn recurrence, the Perron contour integral method, and certain difference-differential equations. We present a summary of our results against the background of earlier work of the first author on sums of the Möbius function over integers with restricted prime factors and on a multiplicative generalization of the sieve.

Modified Dirichlet character sums over the $k$-free integers

Abstract:The main question of this paper is the following: how much cancellation can the partial sums restricted to the $k$-free integers up to $x$ of a $\pm 1$ multiplicative function $f$ be in terms of $x$? Building upon the recent paper by Q. Liu, Acta Math. Sin. (Engl. Ser.) 39 (2023), no. 12, 2316-2328, we prove that under the Riemann Hypothesis for quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions, we can get $x^{1/(k+1)}$ cancellation when $f$ is a modified quadratic Dirichlet character, i.e., $f$ is completely multiplicative and for some quadratic Dirichlet character $\chi$, $f(p)=\chi(p)$ for all but a finite subset of prime numbers. This improves the conditional results by Aymone, Medeiros and the author cf. Ramanujan J. 59 (2022), no. 3, 713-728.

Abstract:We recently introduced the recursive divisor function $\kappa_x(n)$, a recursive analogue of the usual divisor function. Here we calculate its Dirichlet series, which is ${\zeta(s-x)}/(2 - \zeta(s))$. We show that $\kappa_x(n)$ is related to the ordinary divisor function by $\kappa_x * \sigma_y = \kappa_y * \sigma_x$, where * denotes the Dirichlet convolution. Using this, we derive several identities relating $\kappa_x$ and some standard arithmetic functions. We also clarify the relation between $\kappa_0$ and the much-studied number of ordered factorizations $K(n)$, namely, $\kappa_0 = {\bf 1} * K$.

Abstract:Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), we utilize the long resonator method to derive $\Omega$-results for the family of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions $L(\sigma, \chi_d)$, where $d$ runs over all fundamental discriminants with $|d| \leq X$ and $\sigma\in [1/2, 1]$ is fixed. This study advances understanding of the maximum size of $L(\sigma, \chi_d)$ within the segment $\sigma\in [1/2, 1]$. In particular, we improve upon Soundararajan's results at the central point and provide a lower bound on the proportion of fundamental discriminants, uniformly within an expected order of magnitude, up to optimal values of the constant for a fixed $\sigma \in (1/2, 1]$.
