Abstract:We study the dynamics of a generic automorphism $f$ of a Stein manifold with the density property. Such manifolds include all linear algebraic groups. Even in the special case of $\mathbb C^n$, $n\geq 2$, most of our results are new. We study the Julia set, non-wandering set, and chain-recurrent set of $f$. We show that the closure of the set of saddle periodic points of $f$ is the largest forward invariant set on which $f$ is chaotic. This subset of the Julia set of $f$ is also characterised as the closure of the set of transverse homoclinic points of $f$, and equals the Julia set if and only if a certain closing lemma holds. Among the other results in the paper is a generalisation of Buzzard's holomorphic Kupka-Smale theorem to our setting.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the dynamical behavior of universal automorphisms on Stein manifolds with the density property. Specifically, the authors study the Julia set, non - wandering set and chain - recurrent set of such automorphisms, and show that the closure of the set of saddle - periodic points is the largest forward - invariant set, on which the automorphism exhibits chaotic behavior. Moreover, they also prove that this subset is also the closure of the set of transverse homoclinic points, and it is equal to the Julia set if and only if a certain closing lemma holds. ### Main contributions: 1. **Definition and characteristics of chaotic Julia set**: The paper defines the chaotic Julia set \(J^*_f\), which is the closure of the set of saddle - periodic points and is the largest forward - invariant set, on which the automorphism \(f\) exhibits chaotic behavior. 2. **Dynamical properties**: The paper studies in detail the properties of the Julia set \(J_f\) and the non - wandering set \(\Omega_f\), including their topological structures and dynamical behaviors. 3. **Application of the closing lemma**: By using the closing lemma, the paper proves certain dynamical properties, such as the hyperbolicity of periodic points and the transversality of homoclinic points. 4. **Generalized results**: Many results in the paper are also new in the case of \(\mathbb{C}^n\) (\(n\geq2\)), which extends previous research achievements. ### Key theorems: - **Theorem 1**: For a universal automorphism \(f\) on a Stein manifold \(X\) with the density property, the following properties hold: - Every periodic point is hyperbolic, and every homoclinic or heteroclinic point is transverse. - The forward Julia set \(J^+_f\) is connected, has an empty interior, is the boundary of the basin of attraction of each attracting periodic orbit, and is not an embedded topological manifold at any point. - The forward Fatou set \(F^+_f\) is equal to the subset \(\text{rne}(f)\) on which \(f\) is robustly non - repelling, and is the union of the basins of attraction of attracting periodic orbals and non - recurrent Fatou components. - The non - wandering set \(\Omega_f\) and the Julia set \(J_f\) are not compact (and thus not empty), have an empty interior, and \(\Omega_f = J_f\cup\text{att}(f)\cup\text{rep}(f)\). - The chain - recurrent set \(C_f\) is the complement of the proper basins of attraction of attracting and repelling periodic orbits, and the chain - recurrent classes are the sets of attracting periodic orbits, repelling periodic orbits and \((J^+_f\cup\text{nrc}(f))\cap(J^-_f\cup\text{nrc}(f^{- 1}))\). - The chaotic Julia set \(J^*_f=\text{sad}(f)\subset J_f\) is perfect and non - compact, \(f\) is chaotic on \(J^*_f\), in fact \(J^*_f\) is the largest forward - invariant subset on which \(f\) is chaotic on \(X\), and is also the closure of the set of transverse homoclinic points. ### Applications and significance: This paper provides new perspectives and tools for understanding complex dynamical systems on Stein manifolds with the density property. By studying the properties of these dynamical systems, we can better understand the relationship between complex geometry and dynamical systems, thus promoting the further development of related fields.
