Abstract:We discuss a relatively simple and computationally inexpensive model that has recently been developed to study phase transformations and shape memory effects in finite nanostructures. Our major focus is given to nanowires of finite length and other nanostructures where size effects are pronounced. The main tool used here is based on mesoscopic models developed with the phase-field approach which we and other authors have applied before to study ferroelectrics at the nanoscale. We study the cubic-to-tetragonal transformations in which case the 2D analogue of the model describes the square-to-rectangle phase transformations. The actual model is based on a coupled system of partial differential equations and is solved with a combination of the Chebyshev collocation method and the extended proper orthogonal decomposition. The developed model and its numerical implementation allow us to study properties of nanostructures and several representative examples of mechanical behavior of nanostructures are discussed.

Abstract:It is well-known that both Performance and reliability of present-day RF integrated circuits (RFICs & MMICs) and even Nano electronic devices cannot be completely understood or accurately predicted from electromagnetic considerations alone. For example, the performance parameters, such as S-parameters, power handling capability and breakdown thresholds of high-density nano interconnects and RF modules are often affected by heat conduction and mechanical stresses/deformations, in extreme cases leading to electro-thermo-mechanical breakdown. Under such circumstances, predictive simulations must rely on multiphysics computational approaches as opposed to electromagnetics-only methods. There exist many challenges in developing computational algorithms for rapidly and accurately analyzing electro-thermal and electro-thermo-mechanical phenomena in RF as well as nano electronic components and circuits with complex geometries and new material properties. Most material parameters involved, such as carrier mobility, permittivity, permeability, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and thermal expansion coefficients are applied field, temperature, and thermal stress dependent. On the other hand, there exist significant differences in length and time scales among electrical, thermal, and mechanical field actions. Therefore, special attention must be paid to the choice of spatial discretization and time stepping procedures to ensure convergent multiphysics solutions. This talk will address challenges and opportunities in computational multiphysics method and its application for RF and Nano electronics, with a series of examples given and demonstrated for the capability of time-domain finite element method and its implementation.

Abstract:In this paper we model and simulate some nano-interconects for nanophotonics. Both frequency- and time-domain methods are used for their analyses. Different cases are considered for nano-interconnects, including the nanostrips and coupled nanowires. It is observed that these structures guide the signals to the desired positions effectively at nano scale level.

Abstract:In most of the cases, the experimental study of Nanotechnology involves high cost for Laboratory set-up and the experimentation processes were also slow. So, one cannot rely on experimental nanotechnology alone. As such, the Computer-Based molecular simulations and modeling are one of the foundations of computational nanotechnology. The computer based modeling and simulations were also referred as computational experimentations. In real experiments, the investigator doesn't have full control over the experiment. But, in Computational experimentation the investigator have full control over the experiment. The accuracy of such Computational nano-technology based experiment generally depends on the accuracy of the following things: Intermolecular interaction, Numerical models and Simulation schemes used. Once the accuracy of the Computational Scheme is guaranteed one can use that to investigate various nonlinear interactions whose results are completely unexpected and unforeseen. Apart from it, numerical modeling and computer based simulations also help to understand the theoretical part of the nano-science involved in the nano-system. They allow us to develop useful analytic and predictive models. In this paper, a brief study of Computer-Based- Simulation techniques as well as some Experimental result obtained using it were given.

Abstract:Modeling and simulation of nano-devices can be used to study and predict the performance of the nanoscale devices and play an increasingly important role in understanding the working mechanisms of devices and improving their performance. Since the MOSFET device size shrinks to nanoscale, the performance of nano-devices is increasingly affected by various quantum effects and nanoscale material properties. Quantum theoretical simulation methods based on quantum effects have been developed to research the new nano-devices. This chapter describes several modeling and simulation methods of nano-devices, including Monte Carlo simulation, nonequilibrium Green’s function (NEGF), molecular dynamics simulation, first principles method, density functional theory, and atomic device simulation. The basic principle of simulation methods and application potential are briefly introduced.

Abstract:Methods sections are often missing essential details. Methodological shortcut citations, in which authors cite previous papers instead of describing the method in detail, may contribute to this problem. This meta-research study used 3 approaches to examine shortcut citation use in neuroscience, biology, and psychiatry. First, we assessed current practices in more than 750 papers. More than 90% of papers used shortcut citations. Other common reasons for using citations in the methods included giving credit or specifying what was used (who or what citation) and providing context or a justification (why citation). Next, we reviewed 15 papers to determine what can happen when readers follow shortcut citations to find methodological details. While shortcut citations can be used effectively, they can also deprive readers of essential methodological details. Problems encountered included difficulty identifying or accessing the cited materials, missing or insufficient descriptions of the cited method, and shortcut citation chains. Third, we examined journal policies. Fewer than one quarter of journals had policies describing how authors should report previously described methods. We propose that methodological shortcut citations should meet 3 criteria; cited resources should provide (1) a detailed description of (2) the method used by the citing authors', and (3) be open access. Resources that do not meet these criteria should be cited to give credit, but not as shortcut citations. We outline actions that authors and journals can take to use shortcut citations responsibly, while fostering a culture of open and reproducible methods reporting.

Reproducible validation and replication studies in nanoscale physics

Abstract:Credibility building activities in computational research include verification and validation, reproducibility and replication, and uncertainty quantification. Though orthogonal to each other, they are related. This paper presents validation and replication studies in electromagnetic excitations on nanoscale structures, where the quantity of interest is the wavelength at which resonance peaks occur. The study uses the open-source software PyGBe : a boundary element solver with treecode acceleration and GPU capability. We replicate a result by Rockstuhl et al. (2005, doi:10/dsxw9d) with a two-dimensional boundary element method on silicon carbide (SiC) particles, despite differences in our method. The second replication case from Ellis et al. (2016, doi:10/f83zcb) looks at aspect ratio effects on high-order modes of localized surface phonon-polariton nanostructures. The results partially replicate: the wavenumber position of some modes match, but for other modes they differ. With virtually no information about the original simulations, explaining the discrepancies is not possible. A comparison with experiments that measured polarized reflectance of SiC nano pillars provides a validation case. The wavenumber of the dominant mode and two more do match, but differences remain in other minor modes. Results in this paper were produced with strict reproducibility practices, and we share reproducibility packages for all, including input files, execution scripts, secondary data, post-processing code and plotting scripts, and the figures (deposited in Zenodo). In view of the many challenges faced, we propose that reproducible practices make replication and validation more feasible. Abstract:A review of different modeling techniques, specifically in the framework of carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs, including nanoparticles such as graphene and carbon nanotubes—CNTs) and the composites and devices that can be derived from them, is presented. The article emphasizes that the overall performance of these materials depends on mechanisms that operate across different time and spatial scales, requiring tailored approaches based on the material type, size, internal structure/configuration, and the specific properties of interest. Far from attempting to cover the entire spectrum of models, this review examines a wide range of analysis and simulation techniques, highlighting their potential use, some of their weaknesses and strengths, and presenting the latest developments and some application examples. In this way, it is shown how modeling can provide key information for tailoring or designing new materials for specific components or systems or to obtain certain functionalities. At the same time, it is revealed to be an area constantly undergoing development and improvement, as evidenced by the progress made by various of these techniques and the new modeling approaches that have emerged in recent years.

Abstract:Plasmonic structures may improve cell performance in a variety of ways. More accurate determining of the optical influence, unlike ideal simulations, requires modeling closer to experimental cases. In this modeling and simulation, irregular nanostructures were chosen and divided into three groups and some modes. For each mode, different sizes of nanoparticles were randomly selected, which could result in pre-determined average particle size and standard deviation. By 3D finite-difference time-domain (3D-FDTD), the optical plasmonic properties of that mode in a solar cell structure were investigated when the nanostructure was added to the buffer/active layer of the organic solar cell. The far- and near-field results were used to compare the plasmonic behavior, relying on the material and geometry. By detailed simulations, Al and Ag nanostructure at the interface of the ZnO/active layer can improve organic solar cell performance optically, especially by the near-field effect. Unlike Au and relative Ag, the Al nanostructured sample showed less parasitic absorption loss.

Abstract:A new way for the simulation of nano-devices is presented, which consists of Schrodinger's equation, time dependent scalar and vector potential equations derived from Maxwell's equations using Lorenz gauge. For analysis the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is applied to these equations. To validate the method a two-dimensional semiconductor nanocavity is considered and numerical results are compared with those of the analytical results.

Abstract:The nanomaterials have been widely used in various fields, such as photonics, catalysis, and adsorption, because of their unique physical and chemical properties. Therefore, their production methods are of utmost importance. Compared with traditional synthetic methods, the template method can effectively control the morphology, particle size, and structure during the preparation of nanomaterials, which is an effective method for their synthesis. The key for the template method is to choose different templates, which are divided into hard template and soft template according to their different structures. In this paper, the effects of different types of templates on the morphology of nanomaterials during their preparation are investigated from two aspects: hard template and soft template, combined with the mechanism of action.

Abstract:Our current knowledge of scholarly plagiarism is largely based on the similarity between full text research articles. In this paper, we propose an innovative and novel conceptualization of scholarly plagiarism in the form of reuse of explicit citation sentences in scientific research articles. Note that while full-text plagiarism is an indicator of a gross-level behavior, copying of citation sentences is a more nuanced micro-scale phenomenon observed even for well-known researchers. The current work poses several interesting questions and attempts to answer them by empirically investigating a large bibliographic text dataset from computer science containing millions of lines of citation sentences. In particular, we report evidences of massive copying behavior. We also present several striking real examples throughout the paper to showcase widespread adoption of this undesirable practice. In contrast to the popular perception, we find that copying tendency increases as an author matures. The copying behavior is reported to exist in all fields of computer science; however, the theoretical fields indicate more copying than the applied fields.

Abstract:Nanostructures are widely used in nano and micro-sized systems and devices such as biosensors, nano actuators, nano-probes, and nano-electro-mechanical systems. The complete understanding of the mechanical behavior of nanostructures is crucial for the design of nanodevices and systems. Therefore, the flexural, stability and vibration analysis of various nanostructures such as nanowires, nanotubes, nanobeams, nanoplates, graphene sheets and nanoshells has received a great attention in recent years. The focus has been made, to present the structural analysis of nanostructures under thermo-magneto-electro-mechanical loadings under various boundary and environmental conditions. This paper also provides an overview of analytical modeling methods, fabrication procedures, key challenges and future scopes of development in the direction of analysis of such structures, which will be helpful for appropriate design and analysis of nanodevices for the application in the various fields of nanotechnology.

Abstract:(1) Background: The ability of metal nanoparticles to carry other molecules and their electromagnetic interactions can be used for localized drug release or to heat malignant tissue, as in the case of photothermal treatments. Plasmonics can be used to calculate their absorption and electric field enhancement, which can be further used to predict the outcome of photothermal experiments. In this study, we model the nanoparticle geometry in a Finite Element Model calculus environment to calculate the effects that occur as a response to placing it in an optical, electromagnetic field, and also a model of the experimental procedure to measure the temperature rise while irradiating a suspension of nanoparticles. (2) Methods: Finite Element Method numerical models using the COMSOL interface for geometry and mesh generation and iterative solving discretized Maxwell’s equations; (3) Results: Absorption and scattering cross-section spectrums were obtained for NanoRods and NanoStars, also varying their geometry as a parameter, along with electric field enhancement in their surroundings; temperature curves were calculated and measured as an outcome of the irradiation of different concentration suspensions; (4) Conclusions: The results obtained are comparable with the bibliography and experimental measurements.

Abstract:Accurately modeling plasmon-modified fluorescence is important for understanding and guiding the design of experimental nanostructures that reliably enhance fluorescence. They are of particular interest due to their potential to allow localized "hot spots" of high fluorescence enhancement in a reproducible manner. Given the increasingly prevalent use of the COMSOL Multiphysics software package for simulating these phenomena, we investigate its accuracy using an analytically tractable model consisting of a gold nanosphere interacting with either a plane wave or a radiating point dipole. COMSOL simulation results were compared with a formally exact analytical theory. It was found that simulation parameters commonly used for plane-wave scattering do not necessarily produce accurate results for the nanoparticle-plasmon-coupled dipole emission case. Instead, user-input adaptive meshing parameters were found to be helpful in achieving quantitative agreements between COMSOL and analytical theory results for plasmon-modified fluorescence. Our studies suggest convergence to analytically calculated values when a minimum of two additional user-input mesh elements separate the point-dipole position and the nanoparticle surface. This practical insight is expected to aid in the application of COMSOL simulations to planning and interpreting fluorescence modification experiments.
