Abstract:We first discuss the Cut Axiom, due to Dedekind, which is one of the many equivalent formulations of the completeness of the real numbers. We point out that the Cut Axiom is equivalent to four “cornerstone theorems” of single-variable Real Analysis, namely, the Intermediate, Extreme, and Mean Value Theorems, as well as Darboux's Theorem. We then describe some general properties of ordered fields, in particular the Archimedean Property and its consequences, and provide a list of statements that are equivalent to completeness and may thus serve as alternate completeness axioms.

Abstract:This paper presents an expository reverse-mathematical analysis of two fundamental theorems in commutative algebra: Hilbert's Nullstellensatz and Basis Theorem. In addition to its profound significance in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, the Basis Theorem is also historically notable for its nonconstructive proof. The Nullstellensatz, on the other hand, is noteworthy as it establishes a fundamental connection between the more algebraic notion of ideals and the more geometric notion of varieties. We explore the conscious shift from computational to conceptual approaches in mathematical argumentation, contextualizing Hilbert's contributions. We formalize the relative constructivity of these theorems using the framework of reverse mathematics, although we do not presuppose familiarity with reverse mathematics. Drawing from contemporary mathematical literature, we analyze the Basis Theorem's reliance on nonconstructive methods versus the more constructive nature of the Nullstellensatz. Our study employs the standard tools of reverse mathematics, in particular subsystems of second-order arithmetic, to outline the minimal set-existence axioms required for these theorems. We review results showing that certain formulations of the Nullstellensatz are provable in the weak axiom system of $\mathsf{RCA}_0$, while the Basis Theorem requires stronger axioms, such as $\Sigma^0_2$-Induction. Consequently, we position these theorems separately within the Friedman-Simpson hierarchy. This analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of the foundational requirements for these pivotal results in algebra.

Abstract:The program Reverse Mathematics in the foundations of mathematics seeks to identify the minimal axioms required to prove theorems of ordinary mathematics. One always assumes the base theory, a logical system embodying computable mathematics. As it turns out, many (most?) theorems are either provable in said base theory, or equivalent to one of four logical systems, collectively called the Big Five. This paper provides an overview of two recent extensions of the Big Five, working in Kohlenbach's higher-order framework. On one hand, we obtain a large number of equivalences between the second-order Big Five and third-order theorems of real analysis dealing with possibly discontinuous functions. On the other hand, we identify four new 'Big' systems, i.e. boasting many equivalences over the base theory, namely the uncountability of the reals, the Jordan decomposition theorem, the Baire category theorem, and Tao's pigeon hole principle for the Lebesgue measure. We discuss a connection to hyperarithmetical analysis, completing the picture.

Abstract:The main goal of this project is to prove the equivalency of several characterizations of completeness of Archimedean ordered fields; some of which appear in most modern literature as theorems following from the Dedekind completeness of the real numbers, while a couple are not as well known and have to do with other areas of mathematics, such as nonstandard analysis. Continuing, we study the completeness of non-Archimedean fields, and provide several examples of such fields with varying degrees of properties, using nonstandard analysis to produce some relatively "nice" (in particular, they are Cantor complete) final examples. As a small detour, we present a short construction of the real numbers using methods from nonstandard analysis.

Abstract:We present a characterization of the completeness of the field of real numbers in the form of a \emph{collection of ten equivalent statements} borrowed from algebra, real analysis, general topology and non-standard analysis. We also discuss the completeness of non-Archimedean fields and present several examples of such fields. As an application we exploit one of our results to argue that the Leibniz infinitesimal calculus in the $18^\textrm{th}$ century was already a rigorous branch of mathematics -- at least much more rigorous than most contemporary mathematicians prefer to believe. By advocating our particular historical point of view, we hope to provoke a discussion on the importance of mathematical rigor in mathematics and science in general. We believe that our article will be of interest for those readers who teach courses on abstract algebra, real analysis, general topology, logic and the history of mathematics.

Abstract:In this paper, methods of second order and higher order reverse mathematics are applied to versions of a theorem of Banach that extends the Schroeder-Bernstein theorem. Some additional results address statements in higher order arithmetic formalizing the uncountability of the power set of the natural numbers. In general, the formalizations of higher order principles here have a Skolemized form asserting the existence of functionals that solve problems uniformly. This facilitates proofs of reversals in axiom systems with restricted choice.

Big in Reverse Mathematics: measure and category

Abstract:The smooth development of large parts of mathematics hinges on the idea that some sets are `small' or `negligible' and can therefore be ignored for a given purpose. The perhaps most famous smallness notion, namely `measure zero', originated with Lebesgue, while a second smallness notion, namely `meagre' or `first category', originated with Baire around the same time. The associated Baire category theorem is a central result governing the properties of meagre (and related) sets, while the same holds for Tao's pigeonhole principle for measure spaes and measure zero sets. In this paper, we study these theorems in Kohlenbach's higher-order Reverse Mathematics, identifying a considerable number of equivalent theorems. The latter involve most basic properties of semi-continuous and pointwise discontinuous functions, Blumberg's theorem, Riemann integration, and Volterra's early work circa 1881. All the aforementioned theorems fall (far) outside of the Big Five of Reverse Mathematics, and we investigate natural restrictions like Baire 1 and quasi-continuity that make these theorems provable again in the Big Five (or similar). Finally, despite the fundamental differences between measure and category, the proofs of our equivalences turn out to be similar.

Abstract:Over the last century, the principle of "induction on the continuum" has been studied by different authors in different formats. All of these different readings are equivalent to one of the three versions that we isolate in this paper. We also formalize those three forms (of "continuous induction") in first-order logic and prove that two of them are equivalent and sufficiently strong to completely axiomatize the first-order theory of the real closed (ordered) fields. We show that the third weaker form of continuous induction is equivalent with the Archimedean property. We study some equivalent axiomatizations for the theory of real closed fields and propose a first-order scheme of the fundamental theorem of algebra as an alternative axiomatization for this theory (over the theory of ordered fields).

Abstract:The aim of Reverse Mathematics(RM for short)is to find the minimal axioms needed to prove a given theorem of ordinary mathematics. These minimal axioms are almost always equivalent to the theorem, working over the base theory of RM, a weak system of computable mathematics. The Big Five phenomenon of RM is the observation that a large number of theorems from ordinary mathematics are either provable in the base theory or equivalent to one of only four systems; these five systems together are called the 'Big Five'. The aim of this paper is to greatly extend the Big Five phenomenon as follows: there are two supposedly fundamentally different approaches to RM where the main difference is whether the language is restricted to second-order objects or if one allows third-order objects. In this paper, we unite these two strands of RM by establishing numerous equivalences involving the second-order Big Five systems on one hand, and well-known third-order theorems from analysis about (possibly) discontinuous functions on the other hand. We both study relatively tame notions, like cadlag or Baire 1, and potentially wild ones, like quasi-continuity. We also show that slight generalisations and variations of the aforementioned third-order theorems fall far outside of the Big Five.

We study some equivalent axiomatizations for the first-order theory of real closed fields and show that some first-order formalization of continuous induction is able to completely axiomatize it (over the theory of ordered fields).

Abstract:We investigate subsystems $COM_{fcn}$, $COMI_{fcn}$ and $PRA_{fcn}$ of the elementary theory of functions $ETF$, the base theory for countable strict reverse mathematics. We show that inductions on any variable for unary, binary and ternary functions are pairwise equivalent over $COM_{fcn}$. We prove that weakened primitive recursion axiom $WPRA$ is equivalent to primitive recursion axiom $PRA$ over $COMI_{fcn}$. We show that permutation axiom and minimization axioms $MIN^1$, $MIN^2$, $MIN^3$ are pairwise equivalent over $PRA_{fcn}$. Thus, we present several equivalent axiomatizations of $ETF$.

Abstract:Lawvere showed that generalised metric spaces are categories enriched over $[0, \infty]$, the quantale of the positive extended reals. The statement of enrichment is a quantitative analogue of being a preorder. Towards seeking a logic for quantitative metric reasoning, we investigate three $[0,\infty]$-valued propositional logics over the Lawvere quantale. The basic logical connectives shared by all three logics are those that can be interpreted in any quantale, viz finite conjunctions and disjunctions, tensor (addition for the Lawvere quantale) and linear implication (here a truncated subtraction); to these we add, in turn, the constant $1$ to express integer values, and scalar multiplication by a non-negative real to express general affine combinations. Quantitative equational logic can be interpreted in the third logic if we allow inference systems instead of axiomatic systems. For each of these logics we develop a natural deduction system which we prove to be decidably complete w.r.t. the quantale-valued semantics. The heart of the completeness proof makes use of the Motzkin transposition theorem. Consistency is also decidable; the proof makes use of Fourier-Motzkin elimination of linear inequalities. Strong completeness does not hold in general, even (as is known) for theories over finitely-many propositional variables; indeed even an approximate form of strong completeness in the sense of Pavelka or Ben Yaacov -- provability up to arbitrary precision -- does not hold. However, we can show it for theories axiomatized by a (not necessarily finite) set of judgements in normal form over a finite set of propositional variables when we restrict to models that do not map variables to $\infty$; the proof uses Hurwicz's general form of the Farkas' Lemma.

Abstract:The theory of Lambda-rings, in the sense of Grothendieck's Riemann-Roch theory, is an enrichment of the theory of commutative rings. In the same way, we can enrich usual algebraic geometry over the ring Z of integers to produce Lambda-algebraic geometry. We show that Lambda-algebraic geometry is in a precise sense an algebraic geometry over a deeper base than Z and that it has many properties predicted for algebraic geometry over the mythical field with one element. Moreover, it does this is a way that is both formally robust and closely related to active areas in arithmetic algebraic geometry.

Abstract:This paper studies logical aspects of the notion of better quasi order, which has been introduced by C. Nash-Williams (Mathematical Proceedings of the Cambridge Philosophical Society 1965 & 1968). A central tool in the theory of better quasi orders is the minimal bad array lemma. We show that this lemma is exceptionally strong from the viewpoint of reverse mathematics, a framework from mathematical logic. Specifically, it is equivalent to the set existence principle of $\Pi^1_2$-comprehension, over the base theory $\mathsf{ATR_0}$.

Big in Reverse Mathematics: the uncountability of the real numbers

Abstract:The uncountability of $\mathbb{R}$ is one of its most basic properties, known far outside of mathematics. Cantor's 1874 proof of the uncountability of $\mathbb{R}$ even appears in the very first paper on set theory, i.e. a historical milestone. In this paper, we study the uncountability of $\mathbb{R}$ in Kohlenbach's higher-order Reverse Mathematics (RM for short), in the guise of the following principle: $$\hbox{for a countable set $A\subset \mathbb{R}$, there exists $y\in \mathbb{R}\setminus A$.}$$ An important conceptual observation is that the usual definition of countable set -- based on injections or bijections to $\mathbb{N}$ -- does not seem suitable for the RM-study of mainstream mathematics; we also propose a suitable (equivalent over strong systems) alternative definition of countable set, namely union over $\mathbb{N}$ of finite sets; the latter is known from the literature and closer to how countable sets occur 'in the wild'. We identify a considerable number of theorems that are equivalent to the centred theorem based on our alternative definition. Perhaps surprisingly, our equivalent theorems involve most basic properties of the Riemann integral, regulated or bounded variation functions, Blumberg's theorem, and Volterra's early work circa 1881. Our equivalences are also robust, promoting the uncountability of $\mathbb{R}$ to the status of 'big' system in RM.

Abstract:We offer an axiomatic definition of a differential algebra of generalized functions over an algebraically closed non-Archimedean field. This algebra is of Colombeau type in the sense that it contains a copy of the space of Schwartz distributions. We study the uniqueness of the objects we define and the consistency of our axioms. Next, we identify an inconsistency in the conventional Laplace transform theory. As an application we offer a free of contradictions alternative in the framework of our algebra of generalized functions. The article is aimed at mathematicians, physicists and engineers who are interested in the non-linear theory of generalized functions, but who are not necessarily familiar with the original Colombeau theory. We assume, however, some basic familiarity with the Schwartz theory of distributions.
