Abstract:The Collins-Soper (CS) kernel is a nonperturbative function that characterizes the rapidity evolution of transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) and wave functions. In this Letter, we calculate the CS kernel for pion and proton targets and for quasi-TMDPDFs of leading and next-to-leading power. The calculations are carried out on the CLS ensemble H101 with dynamical $N_f=2+1$ clover-improved Wilson fermions. Our analyses demonstrate the consistency of different lattice extractions of the CS kernel for mesons and baryons, as well as for twist-two and twist-three operators, even though lattice artifacts could be significant. This consistency corroborates the universality of the lattice-determined CS kernel and suggests that a high-precision determination of it is in reach.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to verify the universality of the Collins - Soper (CS) kernel in lattice calculations. Specifically, the researchers examined the consistency and universality of the CS kernel by calculating different targets (such as pions and protons) and quasi - TMDPDFs (quasi - TMDPDFs) of different powers. These calculations were carried out on specific lattice ensembles, using dynamical Nf = 2 + 1 clover - improved Wilson fermions. The main purpose of the paper is to confirm the universality of the CS kernel and demonstrate the possibility of determining the CS kernel with high precision. ### Background and Motivation - **Description of Internal Structure**: In the theory of strong interactions (QCD), describing the internal structure of hadrons is a fundamental problem. Current descriptions of high - energy processes are based on factorization theorems, which consist of a calculable perturbative part and a universal non - perturbative function. - **TMDPDFs**: Transverse - momentum - dependent quark distribution functions (TMDPDFs) encode the three - dimensional momentum information of quarks inside hadrons. The universality of TMDPDFs is the cornerstone of the factorization method, but it is currently mainly verified indirectly by phenomenological extractions from multiple processes. - **Importance of the CS Kernel**: The CS kernel is one of the most fundamental non - perturbative functions in QCD. It describes the interaction between quarks and the QCD vacuum and appears in the descriptions of many types of processes. Verifying its universality is of fundamental importance to QCD. ### Research Methods - **Lattice Calculation**: The researchers used lattice QCD to calculate the CS kernel for pion and proton targets, as well as the leading - power and next - to - leading - power quasi - TMDPDFs. - **Factorization Theorem**: In the case of large momentum and large L, the matrix element can be factorized into the product of physical TMDPDFs and coefficient functions. - **Ratio Method**: By calculating the ratios of quasi - TMDPDFs at different momenta, the researchers were able to extract the CS kernel. This method avoids the systematic uncertainties introduced by Fourier transforms. ### Main Results - **Consistency Verification**: The researchers compared four independent calculation results (pion and proton targets, and twist - 2 and twist - 3 operators), and the results showed a high degree of consistency, which confirmed the universality of the CS kernel. - **Comparison with Existing Results**: The results in the paper are consistent with existing phenomenological extractions and perturbative calculation results, further supporting the universality of the CS kernel. - **Systematic Error Analysis**: The researchers also discussed the sources of various systematic errors and showed that combining TMDPDFs of different twists helps to reduce these errors. ### Conclusion Through lattice QCD calculations, the paper for the first time compared four different cases (TMDPDFs f1 and e of pions and protons), confirming the universality of the CS kernel. These results are consistent with previous phenomenological and perturbative calculations, indicating that in the intermediate transverse distance range (0.8 GeV⁻¹ ≲ b ≲ 2.6 GeV⁻¹), the systematic errors are not significant. Future work needs to further quantify all sources of systematic errors.
