Abstract:In Europe (e.g., in Italy), and in the States, the opinion is widely spreading that the negative consequences of modern progress are the fault of "Science". A lively debate on this topic took place among the famous writer Leonardo Sciascia and Italian physicists like Edoardo Amaldi and Emilio Segre', when Sciascia wrote his known book about the disappearance of Ettore Majorana, a book that presented Majorana (a very reserved theoretical physicist) as an example of the scientist that keeps his discoveries secret when afraid of possible evil applications. We wish to contribute now to such a question, since many special meetings did recently return to it, while celebrating the centenary of Majorana's birth (2006), or 30 years (2005) from Sciascia's book publication. It appeared natural to us to start with the figure of Einstein, who, even if extremely peaceable, supported the atomic bomb construction by his letter to Roosvelt. We discuss first the significance of part of Einsteins's scientific work (which flourished in particular one century ago): We seize this opportunity for presenting a derivation of the "twins paradox", so simple that it has been taught to Senior High School last-year students or University undergraduate students; all the present work, more in general, is addressed mainly to them. In the second part of this paper, we analyse the general meaning of Einstein's contributions to philosophy and pedagogy. The third part is entirely devoted to our main subject, i.e., to discussing the "Responsibility of the Intellectuals". The reader interested chiefly in this last part, can find it re-expounded in a self-contained way in the Appendix. More information in the Contents of this article.

Abstract:Over the years many have written biographies of Einstein. They all based their biographies on primary sources, archival material: memories and letters of people who were in contact with Einstein, Einstein's own recollections; interviews that Einstein had given over the years, and letters of Einstein to his friends - youth friends like Marcel Grossman and Michele Besso and later friends and colleagues like Heinrich Zangger; and especially his love letters with Mileva Mari\'c. One can demarcate between two types of biographies, namely, Documentary biographies, and, Non-documentary biographies. Non-documentary biographies were written by people who based themselves on documentary biographies and on other non-documentary biographies. Documentary biographies were written by people who knew Einstein personally, and received information from him and from other people who were in personal contact with him. This type can be further divided into two subgroups: books that were written while Einstein was still alive, and books that were written after his death. Among the first group there were some biographies that Einstein considered to be more reliable, others he thought were less reliable, and still other biographies which he considered to be almost pure imagination. I will demonstrate that relying on primary sources and "documentary" does not necessarily mean "reliable".

Abstract:This volume covers one of the most thrilling two-year periods in twentieth-century physics, as matrix mechanics - developed chiefly by W. Heisenberg, M. Born, and P. Jordan - and wave mechanics - developed by E. Schrödinger - supplanted the earlier quantum theory. The almost one hundred writings by Einstein, of which a third have never been published, and the more than thirteen hundred letters show Einstein's immense productivity and hectic pace of life. Einstein quickly grasps the conceptual peculiarities involved in the new quantum mechanics, such as the difference between Schrödinger's wave function and a field defined in spacetime, or the emerging statistical interpretation of both matrix and wave mechanics. Inspired by correspondence with G. Y. Rainich, he investigates with Jakob Grommer the problem of motion in general relativity, hoping for a hint at a new avenue to unified field theory. Einstein falls victim to scientific fraud when, in a collaboration with E. Rupp, he becomes convinced that the latter's experiments, aimed at deciding whether excited atoms emit light instantaneously (in quanta) or in a finite time (in waves), confirm a wave-theoretic explanation. While it was known that the teenage Einstein had been romantically involved with Marie Winteler in 1895, newly discovered documents reveal that his love for Marie was rekindled in 1909-10 while he was still married to Mileva Marić. The 1925 Locarno Treaties renew Einstein's optimism in European reconciliation. He backs the `International manifesto against compulsory military service' and continues his participation in the League of Nations' International Committee on Intellectual Cooperation. He remains intensely committed to the shaping of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, although his enthusiasm for this cause is sorely tested.

Abstract:Seventy-five years ago, Bernardo Dessau passed away. He had been the sole professor of Physics at the University of Perugia for thirty years. With this brief contribution we intend to repay a debt of gratitude, first of all because his scientific merits were probably underestimated, having spent the first fifteen years of his career under the shadow of the great Augusto Righi in Bologna, where he also witnessed meetings with the young Marconi. He was then relegated to the Faculty of Medicine of Perugia, without a real laboratory, disregarded by the national scientific community and unable to move to better equipped locations. Nevertheless, he proved to be a gifted teacher and popularizer of science. He published a comprehensive three-volume physics textbook that was widely used in Italy and abroad. Despite becoming an Italian citizen in 1894, Dessau's German origins led to his suspension from service during World War I. Furthermore, his Jewish identity made him a target of Nazi-fascist antisemitism. He was dismissed from both the University of Perugia and from the Italian Society of Physics, of which he had been a member since its beginning, fortunately escaping deportation.

Abstract:Western thinking underwent a turning point between 1885 and 1925. Einstein in 1905 symbolizes the emblematic hinge of this change of direction. To find an equivalent phenomenon in the past we need to go back to the period from the XV century to the XVII century. It was not a mere reform of codes but a new code. In 1905 the perception of reality changed through the introduction of relativism in three levels of the reference systems: the ego-other relation, the world perceived by the senses, and the 'ideal' universe of the concepts. We will try to identify how this change was expressed and developed in the cited levels, both in the physic and nature based sciences, in the social sciences, and in literature and fine arts. Today, 100 years after, the 1905's generation still proposes us two options: to live sheltered by the dogma that reassures us with its only and exclusive viewpoint claimed objective, or to dare to live with the multiple, the transient, the relative. The first way led to the worst regimes and intolerant ideas of the XX century, the second option throws us into the uncertainty of the creative adventure, but also leads us to the possibility of a fairer society in the XXI century.

Abstract:In the Patent Office Einstein hatched his most beautiful ideas, and there he spent his "Happy Bern Years". These wonderful ideas led to his miraculous year works of 1905. Einstein was not an expert in academic matters, and he was out of academic world. Neither did he meet influential professors, or attend academic meetings. He discussed his ideas with his close friends and colleagues from the Patent Office. In 1907 he finally got his foot into the academic doorway; Einstein became a privatdozent and gave lectures at the University of Bern. However, his first students consisted again of his two close friends and another colleague from the Patent Office.

Abstract:The purpose of this humanbecoming hermeneutic sciencing was to discover the emergent meanings in the living quality of humanuniverse, Albert Einstein. The author's dialogue with various media centered on the question: What are the emergent meanings in the living quality of the legendary figure, Albert Einstein? For this humanbecoming hermeneutic sciencing, the works investigated by the author were limited to only three media sources: Einstein Revealed, a public television production; the book that inspired the work, Einstein: His Life and Universe, by Walter Isaacson; and the BBC-DVD video, Einstein and Eddington. There are hundreds of books, essays, films, and other works about Einstein that were not included in this hermeneutic investigation.

However, without records of advanced neuro-imaging of his brain, conclusions regarding Einstein's extraordinary cognitive capabilities can only be drawn based on the unique external features of his brain and through comparison of the external features with those of other human brain samples. The recent discovery of 14 previously unpublished photographs of Einstein's brain taken at unconventional angles by Dr. Thomas Stoltz Harvey, the pathologist, ignited a renewed frenzy about clues to explain Einstein's genius. Dr. Dean Falk and her colleagues, in their landmark paper published in Brain (2013; 136:1304-1327), described in such details about the unusual features of Einstein's brain, which shed new light on Einstein's intelligence. In this article, we ask what are the unique structures of his brain? What can we learn from this new information? Can we really explain his extraordinary cognitive capabilities based on these unique brain structures? We conclude that studying the brain of a remarkable person like Albert Einstein indeed provides us a better example to comprehensively appreciate the relationship between brain structures and advanced cognitive functions. However, caution must be exercised so as not to over-interpret his intelligence solely based on the understanding of the surface structures of his brain.
A proposal of neutrino mass formula

Abstract:An explicit mass formula is proposed for three active neutrinos and their heavy sterile (righthanded) counterparts in the framework of seesaw mechanism. The formula correlates reasonably the experimental estimates for the solar $\Delta m^2_{12}$ and atmospheric $\Delta m^2_{32}$ in the case of hierarchical spectrum $m^2_1 \ll m^2_2 \ll m^2_3 $ of active neutrinos. The lightest heavy neutrino is predicted to be $O(10^5)$ times lighter than the heaviest. An efficient mass formula, proposed previously for charged leptons, is recalled and coordinated with the new mass formula for neutrinos.

Abstract:The 1896-1901 Milanese period is a key one to understand Einstein's training background. When he was a student at the ETH in Z\"urich (the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Z\"urich) from 1896 to 1900, he would make regular trips back to Milan to stay with his family who was involved in the development of the electricity industry in northern Italy. Between 1899 and 1901, he would meet his faithful friend and collaborator, Michele Besso in Milan on a regular basis. Given their relationship, the 1899-1901 Milanese period therefore foreshadowed the Bern period later in 1904. In order to specify the circumstances under which Einstein and Besso got the chance to meet, we will show that their respective families did have interconnected social networks, especially through the electricity sector and the polytechnic engineering Universities of Z\"urich and Milan. The branch of the Cantoni family, on Michele's mother's side, rather ignored by now, played a crucial role: with Vittorio Cantoni, a renowned electrical engineer who had not been previously identified as being Michele's uncle, and Giuseppe Jung, professor at the Milan Politecnico. We will also show that when staying in Milan, Einstein, who lived in a well-known Milanese palace in the heart of the city, worked in the nearby rich library of the Istituto Lombardo, Accademia di Scienze e Lettere in Brera. The linkage between the scientific observations which can be found in Einstein's correspondence and this library collection sheds new light on his scientific work, in particular on his original thesis.

Abstract:Albert Einstein's practice in physics and his philosophical positions gradually reoriented themselves from more empiricist towards rationalist viewpoints. This change accompanied his turn towards unified field theory and different presentations of himself, eventually leading to his highly programmatic Autobiographical Notes in 1949. Einstein enlisted his own history and professional stature to mold an ideal of a theoretical physicist who represented particular epistemic virtues and moral qualities. These in turn reflected the theoretical ideas of his strongly mathematical unification program and professed Spinozist beliefs.

Abstract:In this paper I show that, while Einstein and Bohm both pursued a deterministic description of quantum mechanics, their philosophical concern was in fact primarily realism and not determinism. Their alleged firm adherence to determinism is based on a long-lasting misleading narrative and it should therefore be greatly scaled down.
