Abstract:Enhancement of a low-contrast image is an essential and challenging task in any computer vision-related application. Perceptually invisible images and the images captured by low dynamic range devices are poor in contrast and are unsuitable for information extraction. It is required to preprocess the image before feeding it for onward processing. In this paper, we propose a contrast enhancement method for highly degraded and perceptually invisible images. The original image is separated into red green and blue channels and each channel is decomposed using stationary wavelet transform (SWT). The approximation channel obtained after SWT decomposition is balanced to its maximum limit and is recombined with the unaltered horizontal, vertical, and diagonal channels to transform back to the spatial domain. The horizontal, vertical, and diagonal channels are left unchanged to preserve the structure of the image. The obtained image after inverse transformation is brightness balanced using the mean balancing proposed in the paper to obtain the final output image. The proposed method is quite effective in improving the contrast of the image while maintaining its color and natural appearance. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of the proposed method on the standard images of CSIQ, TID-2013, and KADID datasets suggests that the method is efficient in enhancing the contrast and color of perceptually invisible images.
