Abstract:Let $A$ be a non-isotrivial almost ordinary Abelian surface with possibly bad reductions over a global function field of odd characteristic $p$. Suppose $\Delta$ is an infinite set of positive integers, such that $\left(\frac{m}{p}\right)=1$ for $\forall m\in \Delta$. If $A$ doesn't admit any global real multiplication, we prove the existence of infinitely many places modulo which the reduction of $A$ has endomorphism ring containing $\mathbb{Z}[x]/(x^2-m)$ for some $m\in \Delta$. This generalizes the $S$-integrality conjecture for elliptic curves over number fields, as proved in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0509485" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0509485">arXiv:math/0509485</a>, to the setting of Abelian surfaces over global function fields. As a corollary, we show that there are infinitely many places modulo which $A$ is not simple, generalizing the main result of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1812.11679" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1812.11679">arXiv:1812.11679</a> to the non-ordinary case.

Abstract:We construct infinitely many abelian surfaces $A$ defined over the rational numbers such that, for $\ell\leqslant 7$ prime, the $\ell$-torsion subgroup of $A$ is not isomorphic as a Galois module to the $\ell$-torsion subgroup of the dual abelian surface. We do this by analyzing the action of the Galois group on the $\ell$-adic Tate module and its reduction modulo $\ell$.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to prove a local p-adic monodromy theorem for ordinary abelian surfaces and K3 surfaces with bad reduction in characteristic p. Abstract:We produce an explicit sequence $\left(S_a \right)_{a \geq 1}$ of abelian surfaces over the rational function field $\mathbb{F}_{q}(t)$ whose Tate-Shafarevich groups are finite and large. More precisely, we establish the estimate $\left \arrowvert\mathrm{III}(S_a) \right \arrowvert = H(S_a)^{1 + o(1)}$ as $a \rightarrow \infty$, where $H(S_a)$ denotes the exponential height of $S_a$. Our method is to prove that each $S_a$ satisfies the BSD conjecture, analyse the geometry and arithmetic of its Néron model and give an explicit expression for its $L$-function in terms of Gauss and Kloosterman sums. By studying the relative distribution of the angles associated to these character sums, we estimate the size of the central value of $L(S_a, T)$, hence the order of $\mathrm{III}(S_a)$.

Abstract:Let $A/K$ be an absolutely simple abelian surface defined over a number field $K$. We give unconditional upper bounds for the number of prime ideals $\mathfrak{p}$ of $K$ with norm up to $x$ such that $A$ has supersingular reduction at $\mathfrak{p}$ when $A$ has a trivial endomorphism ring, real multiplication, and quaternion multiplication, respectively. Particularly, in the real multiplication case and when $K=\mathbb{Q}$, the bound is related to an upper bound for the distribution of Frobenius traces of $A$. Also in the real multiplication case, we provide unconditional upper bounds for a variant of the problem, which concerns the number of prime ideals for which the reduction of $A$ at the prime has a particular Newton datum and is not simple.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a fixed odd prime and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field in which $p$ splits. Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over $K$ with supersingular reduction at both primes above $p$ in $K$. Under certain assumptions, we give a growth estimate for the Mordell--Weil rank of $A$ over finite extensions inside the $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$-extension of $K$. In the last section, written by Chris Williams, he includes some speculative remarks on the $p$-adic $L$-functions for $\mathrm{GSp}(4)$ corresponding to the multi-signed Selmer groups constructed in this paper.

Abstract:We address the question of existence of absolutely simple abelian varieties of dimension 2 with everywhere good reduction over quadratic fields. The emphasis will be given to the construction of pairs $(K,C)$, where $K$ is a quadratic number field and $C$ is a genus $2$ curve with everywhere good reduction over $K$. We provide the first infinite sequence of pairs $(K,C)$ where $K$ is a real (complex) quadratic field and $C$ has everywhere good reduction over $K$. Moreover, we show that the Jacobian of $C$ is an absolutely simple abelian variety.

Abstract:Let $A$ be a modular abelian surface over $Q$ which either has trivial geometric endomorphism ring, or arises as the restriction of scalars of an elliptic curve over an imaginary quadratic field which is modular and is not a $Q$-curve. In the former case, assume that there exists an odd Dirichlet character $\chi$ such that $L(A,\chi,1)\neq 0$. We prove the following implication: if $L(A, 1) \ne 0$, and the $p$-adic eigenvariety for $GSp_4$ is smooth at the point corresponding to $A$ (and some auxiliary technical hypotheses hold), then $A(Q)$ is finite, as predicted by the Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, and the $p$-part of the Tate--Shafarevich group is also finite. We also prove one inclusion of the cyclotomic Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $A$. Moreover, we also prove analogous results for cohomological automorphic representations of $GSp_4$, removing many of the restrictive hypotheses in our earlier work [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2003.05960" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2003.05960">2003.05960</a>]; for cohomological representations we do not need to assume smoothness of the eigenvariety, since it is automatic in this case. The main ingredient in the proof is the Euler system attached to the spin representations of genus $2$ Siegel modular forms constructed in our earlier work with Skinner.

Obstructions to semiorthogonal decompositions for singular projective varieties II: Representation theory

Abstract:We show that odd-dimensional projective varieties with tilting objects and only ADE-hypersurface singularities are nodal, i.e. they only have $A_1$-singularities. This is a very special case of more general obstructions to the existence of semiorthogonal decompositions for projective Gorenstein varieties. More precisely, for many isolated hypersurface singularities, we show that Kuznetsov-Shinder's categorical absorptions of singularities cannot contain tilting objects. The key idea is to compare singularity categories of projective varieties to singularity categories of finite-dimensional associative Gorenstein algebras. The former often contain special generators, called cluster-tilting objects, which typically have loops and $2$-cycles in their quivers. In contrast, quivers of cluster-tilting objects in the latter categories, can never have loops or $2$-cycles.

Abstract:We introduce an inseparable version of Kummer surfaces. It is defined as a supersingular K3 surface in characteristic 2 with 16 smooth rational curves forming a certain configuration and satisfying a suitable divisibility condition. The main result is that such a surface admits an inseparable double covering by a non-normal surface $A$ that is similar to abelian surfaces in two aspects: its numerical invariants are the same as abelian surfaces, and its smooth locus admits an abelian group structure.

Abstract:We consider a $J_b(\mathbb{Q}_p)$-torsor on the supersingular locus of the Siegel threefold constructed by Caraiani-Scholze, and show that it induces an isomorphism between a free group on a finite number of generators, and the group of self-quasi-isogenies of a supersingular abelian surface, respecting a principal polarization and a prime-to-$p$ level structure. Along the way, we classify certain pro-étale torsors in terms of the pro-étale fundamental group, describe the category of geometric covers of non-normal schemes, and use this to compute pro-étale fundamental groups of curves.

Abstract:We give sufficient conditions for a Frobenius category to be equivalent to the category of Gorenstein projective modules over an Iwanaga-Gorenstein ring. We then apply this result to the Frobenius category of special Cohen-Macaulay modules over a rational surface singularity, where we show that the associated stable category is triangle equivalent to the singularity category of a certain discrepant partial resolution of the given rational singularity. In particular, this produces uncountably many Iwanaga-Gorenstein rings of finite GP type. We also apply our method to representation theory, obtaining Auslander-Solberg and Kong type results.

Abstract:We study the space of non-simple polarised abelian surfaces. Specifically, we describe for which pairs (m, n) the locus of polarised abelian surfaces of type (1, d) that contain two complementary elliptic curve of exponents m, n, denoted Ed(m,n)$$\mathcal {E}_d(m,n)$$ is non-empty. We show that if d is square-free, the locus Ed(m,n)$$\mathcal {E}_d(m,n)$$ is an irreducible surface (if non-empty). We also show that the loci Ed(d,d)$$\mathcal {E}_d(d,d)$$ can have many components if d is an odd square. Abstract:We characterise abelian surfaces defined over finite fields containing no curves of genus less than or equal to $3$. Firstly, we complete and expand the characterisation of isogeny classes of abelian surfaces with no curves of genus up to $2$ initiated by the first author et al. in previous work. Secondly, we show that, for simple abelian surfaces, containing a curve of genus $3$ is equivalent to admitting a polarisation of degree $4$. Thanks to this result, we can use existing algorithms to check which isomorphism classes in the isogeny classes containing no genus $2$ curves have a polarisation of degree $4$. Thirdly, we characterise isogeny classes of abelian surfaces with no curves of genus $\leq 2$, containing no abelian surface with a polarisation of degree $4$. Finally, we describe absolutely irreducible genus $3$ curves lying on abelian surfaces containing no curves of genus less than or equal to $2$, and show that their number of rational points is far from the Serre--Weil bound.

Abstract:Let A be an abelian surface over F_q, the field of q elements. The rational points on A/\F_q form an abelian group A(\F_q) \simeq \Z/n_1\Z \times \Z/n_1 n_2 \Z \times \Z/n_1 n_2 n_3\Z \times\Z/n_1 n_2 n_3 n_4\Z. We are interested in knowing which groups of this shape actually arise as the group of points on some abelian surface over some finite field. For a fixed prime power q, a characterization of the abelian groups that occur was recently found by Rybakov. One can use this characterization to obtain a set of congruences modulo the integers $n_1, n_2, n_3, n_4$ on certain combinations of coefficients of the corresponding Weil polynomials. We use Rybakov's criterion to show that groups \Z/n_1\Z \times \Z/n_1 n_2 \Z \times \Z/n_1 n_2 n_3\Z \times\Z/n_1 n_2 n_3 n_4\Z do not occur if n_1 is very large with respect to n_2, n_2, n_4 (Theorem \ref{splitbound}), and occur with density zero in a wider range of the variables (Theorem \ref{splitbound-average}).

Abstract:A new tool for the model theory of differentially closed fields and of compact complex manifolds is here developed. In such settings, it is shown that a type internal to the field of constants (resp. to the projective line) admits a maximal image whose binding group is an abelian variety. The properties of such "abelian reductions" are investigated in the Galois-theoretic framework provided by stability theory. Several geometric consequences for the birational geometry of algebraic vector fields of characteristic zero are then deduced. In particular, (1) it is shown that if some cartesian power of an algebraic vector field admits a nontrivial rational first integral then already the second power does, (2) two-dimensional isotrivial algebraic vector fields are classified up to birational equivalence, and (3) algebraic vector fields whose finite covers admit no nontrivial factors are studied in arbitrary dimension. Analogues of these results in bimeromorphic geometry are also obtained.

Explicit desingularisation of Kummer surfaces in characteristic two via specialisation

Abstract:We study the birational geometry of the Kummer surfaces associated to the Jacobian varieties of genus two curves, with a particular focus on fields of characteristic two. In order to do so, we explicitly compute a projective embedding of the Jacobian of a general genus two curve and, from this, we construct its associated Kummer surface. This explicit construction produces a model for desingularised Kummer surfaces over any field of characteristic not two, and specialising these equations to characteristic two provides a model of a partial desingularisation. Adapting the classic description of the Picard lattice in terms of tropes, we also describe how to explicitly find completely desingularised models of Kummer surfaces whenever the $p$-rank is not zero. In the final section of this paper, we compute an example of a Kummer surface with everywhere good reduction over a quadratic number field, and draw connections between the models we computed and a criterion that determines when a Kummer surface has good reduction at two.
