Abstract:Let $A$ be a non-isotrivial almost ordinary Abelian surface with possibly bad reductions over a global function field of odd characteristic $p$. Suppose $\Delta$ is an infinite set of positive integers, such that $\left(\frac{m}{p}\right)=1$ for $\forall m\in \Delta$. If $A$ doesn't admit any global real multiplication, we prove the existence of infinitely many places modulo which the reduction of $A$ has endomorphism ring containing $\mathbb{Z}[x]/(x^2-m)$ for some $m\in \Delta$. This generalizes the $S$-integrality conjecture for elliptic curves over number fields, as proved in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0509485" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0509485">arXiv:math/0509485</a>, to the setting of Abelian surfaces over global function fields. As a corollary, we show that there are infinitely many places modulo which $A$ is not simple, generalizing the main result of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1812.11679" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1812.11679">arXiv:1812.11679</a> to the non-ordinary case.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to prove a local p-adic monodromy theorem for ordinary abelian surfaces and K3 surfaces with bad reduction in characteristic p. As an application, we get a finiteness result for the reduction of their Hecke orbits in the case of type II supersingular reduction.

Abstract:We solve a problem in enumerative combinatorics which is equivalent to counting topological types of certain group actions on compact Riemann surfaces. Let $V_2(F_p)$ be the two-dimensional vector space over $F_p$, the field with $p$ elements, $p$ an odd prime. We count orbits of the general linear group $GL_2(F_p)$ on certain multisets consisting of $R \geq 3$ non-zero columns from $V_2(F_p)$. The $R$-multisets are `zero-sum,' that is, the sum (mod $p$) over the columns in the multiset is $[\begin{smallmatrix} 0 \\ 0 \end{smallmatrix}]$. The orbit count yields the number of topological types of fully ramified actions of the elementary abelian $p$-group of rank $2$ on compact Riemann surfaces of genus $1+ Rp(p-1)/2-p^2.$

Abstract:This is a paper in smooth $4$-manifold topology, inspired by the Mordell-Weil Theorem in number theory. More precisely, we prove a smooth version of the Mordell-Weil Theorem and apply it to the `unipotent radical' case of a Thurston-type classification of mapping classes of simply-connected $4$-manifolds $M_d$ that admit the structure of an elliptic complex surface of arithmetic genus $d\geq 1$. Applications include Nielsen realization theorems for $M_d$.

Abstract:We prove quantitative versions of Borel and Harish-Chandra's theorems on reduction theory for arithmetic groups. Firstly, we obtain polynomial bounds on the lengths of reduced integral vectors in any rational representation of a reductive group. Secondly, we obtain polynomial bounds in the construction of fundamental sets for arithmetic subgroups of reductive groups, as the latter vary in a real conjugacy class of subgroups of a fixed reductive group. Our results allow us to apply the Pila--Zannier strategy to the Zilber--Pink conjecture for the moduli space of principally polarised abelian surfaces. Building on our previous paper, we prove this conjecture under a Galois orbits hypothesis. Finally, we establish the Galois orbits hypothesis for points corresponding to abelian surfaces with quaternionic multiplication, under certain geometric conditions.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a local field of residue characteristic $p>0$. We explain how to compute the semistable reduction of $K$-curves $Y$ equipped with a degree-$p$ morphism from $Y$ to the projective line. This includes the reduction at $p$ of superelliptic curves of degree $p$, but our approach is not limited to Galois covers. We give particular attention to the reduction of plane quartics at $p=3$, which case is implemented in SageMath. We use the language of non-archimedean analytic geometry in the sense of Berkovich. A key tool is the different function of Cohen, Temkin, and Trushin.

Galois Symmetry of Topological Manifolds

Abstract:In 1970 Nice ICM report, Sullivan defined simply connected $p$-adic formal manifolds and an abelianized Galois action on them, for $p$ odd. He also had a suggestion for $p=2$. The Galois action $Gal(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ on a variety over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ does not change its étale homotopy type by Artin-Mazur. There is also a claim in Sullivan's 1970s MIT notes that the Galois action on the elements reprensented by varieties of the `structure set' on an étale homotopy type passes through the abelianized Galois action. We define simply connected $p$-adic formal manifolds and the abelianized Galois action on them, for both $p$ odd and $p=2$. Then we formulate the $p$-adic structure set on a $p$-adic formal manifold and define an abelianized Galois action on these structure sets. We prove that the Galois action on smooth projective varieties over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ is equivalent to the abelianized Galois action on the $p$-adic structure sets.

On a p-adic version of Narasimhan and Seshadri's theorem

Abstract:Consider a smooth projective curve C of genus g over a complete discrete valuation field of characteristic 0 and residue field \Fbar_p. Motivated by Narasimhan and Seshadri's theorem, Faltings asked whether all semistable vector bundles of degree 0 over C_{\C_p} are in the image of the p-adic Simpson correspondence. Works of Deninger-Werner and Xu show that this is equivalent for the vector bundle to having potentially strongly semistable reduction. We prove that if C has good reduction, p>r(r-1) (g-1) and we consider a vector bundle of rank r with stable reduction, the conditions of having potentially strongly semistable reduction and of having strongly semistable reduction are equivalent. In particular, we provide a negative answer to Faltings' question

Abstract:Let $(X,o)$ be a complex analytic normal surface singularity and let ${\mathcal O}_{X,o}$ be its local ring. We investigate the normal reduction number of ${\mathcal O}_{X,o}$ and related numerical analytical invariants via resolutions $\widetilde{X}\to X$ of $(X,o)$ and cohomology groups of different line bundles ${\mathcal L}\in {\rm Pic}(\widetilde{X})$. The normal reduction number is the universal optimal bound from which powers of certain ideals have stabilization properties. Here we combine this with stability properties of the iterated Abel maps. Some of the main results provide topological upper bounds for both stabilization properties.

Abstract:Smooth minimal surfaces of general type with $K^2=1$, $p_g=2$, and $q=0$ constitute a fundamental example in the geography of algebraic surfaces, and the 28-dimensional moduli space $\mathbf{M}$ of their canonical models admits a modular compactification $\overline{\mathbf{M}}$ via the minimal model program. We describe eight new irreducible boundary divisors in such compactification parametrizing reducible stable surfaces. Additionally, we study the relation with the GIT compactification of $\mathbf{M}$ and the Hodge theory of the degenerate surfaces that the eight divisors parametrize.

Abstract:The complex projective structures considered is this article are compact curves locally modeled on $\mathbb{CP}^1$. To such a geometric object, modulo marked isomorphism, the monodromy map associates an algebraic one: a representation of its fundamental group into $\operatorname{PGL}(2,\mathbb{C})$, modulo conjugacy. This correspondence is neither surjective nor injective. Nonetheless, it is a local diffeomorphism [Hejhal, 1975]. We generalize this theorem to projective structures admitting poles (without apparent singularity and with fixed residues): the corresponding monodromy map (including Stokes data) is a local biholomorphism.

Abstract:We study framed surfaces, which are a class of Euclidean minimal and hyperbolic CMC-1 surfaces that generalize immersed minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and Bryant surfaces. For this class we prove a lower bound on the (unrestricted) Morse index by a linear function of the genus, number of ends and number of branch points (counting multiplicity), generalizing a result by Chodosh and the first author. We include as well a description of the 1-to-1 correspondence between Euclidean minimal and Bryant surfaces, known in the literature as Lawson's correspondence.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime number and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field in which $p$ is split. Let $f$ be a modular form with good reduction at $p$. We study the variation of the Bloch--Kato Selmer groups and the Bloch--Kato--Shafarevich--Tate groups of $f$ over the anticyclotomic $\mathbf{Z}_p$-extension $K_\infty$ of $K$. In particular, we show that under the generalized Heegner hypothesis, if the $p$-localization of the generalized Heegner cycle attached to $f$ is primitive and certain local conditions hold, then the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer group of $f$ over $K_\infty$ is free over the Iwasawa algebra. Consequently, the Bloch--Kato--Shafarevich--Tate groups of $f$ vanish. This generalizes earlier works of Matar and Matar--Nekovář on elliptic curves. Furthermore, our proof applies uniformly to the ordinary and non-ordinary settings.
